Been a while since my last post.. been too busy coloring comics at night and programming during the day... anyway, this is something I did for fun, just finished tonight:

It took about 12 hours on photshop 7. Used a crappy poser render as reference.

Now that looks cool. Her hair is so stylish.
This work kind of reminds me of Boris Vallejo. Great job!

awesome piece. I think she's floating just alittle too much though. What i mean is that even though there is a background it kinda...feels empty. I think adding a colored area of clouds under her would kinda help...something.. it's 5am maybe someone else can explain what i mean.

Awsome and Beautifull !!!!!!!!!
I don't get on here much since school started....
So when I do get on here I pick threads at random, because
I really don't anyone on here..........
I love the way you made the lighting go around her leg.
I only thing I see right now is the back of her upper arm has
a little too much detail. It looks like she's got wrinkles....
Is this done in painter or with a real paint brush????
I want to see more :chug:

tommy: eh eh... I can eat those two for breakfast! Ehmm... I wish! just kiddking.. thank you for the comparison though. I kinda wanted to prove myself I could create an image as good (or close) to the ones from the artist that first inspired me to paint (Boris). I don't do images in this style very often any more.. but I still enjoy it very much.
Here.. since you all guys love this image, I decided to post a close up:

Personally I think that their stuff looks stiff and stale next to frazetta. But for critiques sake since they are photorealistic, compare them to struzan. He kills them. I would like struzan and boris to draw from the same reference material and do a pepsi challenge. Basically what I'm saying is if you use this style you need to put yourself in position to have a better outcome for your labor. You obviously don't suck. You are deep into your style so I would focus on lighting and pose.

I like Struzan's work and was inspired/blown away early on with the movie posters. I always thought he wasn't drawing these but tracing from photos? If he's drawing them then he rocks even harder, if he isn't, I think he somehow gets more life into the pictures than most artists that rely completely on the photo.
I also personally gotta lean to the more expressive qualities of Frazetta as opposed to Boris.
Nice pic Rob, maybe more of that blue reflected in the flesh tones?

Dang, I didn't even know who Struzan was until you guys mentioned it. I checked out his official site and his work is mighty impressive, gotta love the detail he puts into his paintings. He only uses coloured pencils and acrylics too, which is doubly amazing.
Now, I don't think Struzan traces the actors in his movie posters, etc, from photos, but I think he uses a form of grid marking. For exmaple, this technique goes back to the old masters and even earlier where they draw out a 'Cartoon'. The Cartoon is the preliminary drawing which will then be converted onto the canvas or whatever material they will be painting on. In order to get the cartoon copy exactly what it should look like on the canvas, the artist divides up the cartoon into grids. He then uses tracing paper and traces over the cartoon and then converts it onto the canvas, using the same technique. This can be a long process depending on how big the painting is, especially when they are doing a fresco, but the masters of the Renaissance era usually had assistant artists to do this for them which would definately save time.
Now, it seems to me that Struzan might use the same technique, or he might even resort to getting a projector and putting photos or photorealistic sketches he has done of the actors onto the projector which he would then trace onto his canvas or whatever he works on. He probably gets people who work at the film studios to take photos of the actors during rehersals, etc, and they send them to him and he just paints it up into a stylish movie poster.
Anywayz, who knows what he does, but even though he might use any of this methods he is still a damn good artist, for you can't trace shading and colour can you?
We can also do the same with digital art except it is a bit quicker of course especially with the use of a scanner. It definately saves time.

Oh yes.. the great Struzan. I love his stuff.. but I haven't seen him draw anything from imagination. He has an incredible technique of course, but unlike boris, Struzan doesn't seem to draw anything that is not coming from reference photos.
Boris can invent and paint incredible photorealistic looking creatures and landscapes from his imagination, besides rendering the human form to perfection. I agree of of curse that a lot of his work is a bit stiff though.
Frazetta, on the hand, has an incredible imagination, unbeatable dinamic poses and energy coming out of his paintings, but a great lack of detail (that is not really missed much... after all his illustrations capture the imagination so well that whatever details are missing are hardly noticed!).
I wouldn't compare or pit these illustrators against each other though. Each one has its own technique and vision.
Simon Bisley is the new kid on the block, that I think is taking Frazetta's place. His drawings sweat action and his technique is incredible, with plenty of details too.
