Lots of good stuff again - looking forward to seeing your finished version, Hagac!

Back to being busy tomorrow (*sigh*), so this'll be my last one for a bit. Have fun..!

Edit: Your Mars house may have been removed because of the photo background, Freakt. I think that's against DSG rules.

Decided to keep the lineart on this one, all is done digitally with my wonderful graphire3.
I must thank François Marcela Froideval for the inspiration to this peace. I must recomend his books for the really cool illustrations and story.

I thought less people would want to paint trees again.
I actually painted a baobab healing tree. Hope it qualifies!?
Didn't put him in a hospital that it still kinda looks like an environment rather than a character.

He can fix anything and anybody btw!

Didn't manage to make it obvious that he is whistling. Oh well.
Image edited after reading Swan's comment.

45 min in PS 6. I was trying for a moody, old-photograph feel. This one didn't turn out so well but I think the technique has potential. Crits? Suggestions?
http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/healingtree.jpg

Signature - Yours made me laugh, especially the hair (leaf?) nets. :)

Gekitsu - Shades of video game design? I get the urge to tile a bunch of them in a row.

Scumworks - Definitely my favorite. I love the starkness of the red cross. Question - how did you pull off the blurred branches in the background?

Twinbee - Crit: There's too much detail all over the place. I'd clean up some more areas by bringing the density down a bit. Your eye needs a place to rest - it took me a long time to figure out what's going on.

Matt Dixon - Intimidatingly good.

Hunger_Artist

Railboy - old photograph feel? try making a layer on top of the work set to "overlay" and experiment with putting different textures on it, or mabey yellow it a little!

SlugMan & Jaded -welcome!

Technically, this is more of a scene than an environment:

The children of the local village always held the Healing Tree in reverence, in part because getting to it required tromping through mud, sticking thorn vines and menacing dark underbruth. It was a tradition that had been passed on from brothers and sisters, oldest to littlest, since time began: to come to the Healing Tree with tiny cages filled with captured glow bugs, tie them to the branches, and thus insure the speedy recovery of loved ones. Sometimes though, some lost traveler would blunder into the plant-grown clearing that held the Healing Tree, and not understanding the local customs, be amazed at what could only be magic...

http://www.jenniferwilliamson.com/dailysketch/healing-tree.jpg

Trinbee - Umm....I believe everyone else's comments on this are on the mark. It's a bit too confusing to be comprehensible.
Freakt - Like the color scheme and the idea (you do have great ideas) but are the white halos around everything intentional? Looks like the edge created by paint bucket fills.
Signature - Reminds me of a children's drawing (note: NOT a bad thing). I think the musical notes would show up better if they were a different color from the tree.
Jaded - Is the tree supposed to breaking down the barbed wire? What a cool idea.
Railboy - yeah, I think it has potential too. I like the textural quality, although the ring of brown at ground level is...inexplicable. Is the tree on an island?

Wow...a LOT of sketches today, and all really nice too. If I pulled out a comment on your work it's only because someone pointed out that my comments were getting a bit longish. *cough* *blush* So I pulled out all the ones that basically said 'that looks cool!' (They ALL look cool...)

Swan - I like the harsh contrast in your colors.

The pool of brown is supposed to be blood - the island is sitting in the middle of it. Not very clear, I know.

Hunger Artist - Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a shot.

Swan: Thanks for the crit. About the white halos, it was unintentional. As you suggested, created by paint bucket fills, but I kind of liked the effect. After consulting my girlfriend, I left it that way. Considering that I've only posted pictures in five threads, I appreciate you liking my ideas. Thank you.

I think he dragged himself here, away from some battle, to die in quiet and peace. But once he had stripped away the chainmail and tumbled into the pool, he found that the tree had other ideas.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/sheepdeprivation/healingtree.jpg

I need one of those trees. The tablet is giving me hand cramps. Grr.

micmac- I dig the way the tree is radiating light, and I like the ritualistic context you've put the concept in. Nice. :)

amerasu - I really really like the symbolsigily things carved into the trunk. They convey the idea that the tree has some sort of imbued purpose while the surroundings make it look like you could come across it in any forest.

micmac
February 15th, 2004, 06:21 PM
Swoop - Not sure why your colours are going dark. If you're working over a transparent background, try adding a white filled layer below your other layers. It's a shot in the dark. Repost it if you get the right colours. I'd be interested to see the difference.

About 1.5 hours in Photoshop.

Hagac - Wow. I love the mood. And you say it's not finished...
mog - Very serene and warm.
Defunct - Cool idea and you beat me to it. You should of had the symbols glow more though.
Matt Dixon - That just takes my breath away. It just pops!
gekitsu - That's cool. Looks as if you work on modular video games like Neverwinter Nights.
Railboy - You always have such cool perspectives and a cool dab-style of painting.
Hunger_Artist - I love the style.
Amerasu - I like the lighting.
Davi - That's a different looking tree. Your painting style is really cool too. Do you always work on one layer?
Swan - Reminds me of the trees from Evil Dead, sans the glowing berries. Nice work by the way.
micmac - That is just awesome. Lighting and shadows look really nice.
mintyfreshdoom - That is a nice idea. I really like the luminosity of the water.
Mykro - Nice lighting. Makes me want to crawl in.

I'll be back Tuesday—snowboarding tomorrow!! Yea!

shadoman: you humble me. the only part that is connected to rpg's in that piece is that i did look a lot at old black isle concept art. and i liked the idea of isolating a piece of environment in a tile.
skill wise... i have a long long way to go. :)

i like the icey look in your tree. the streaks of higher saturated blue work really good.

enddrive: now that i call a very unique approach to the topic.

railboy: thanks :) putting more of them side by side would probably throw the balance of the level off a tiny tiny bit ;)

necronet: thank you very much. :)

Sapphire - Thanks for the words. I didn't see yours til after I posted. I really like that sign above the doorway. Cool lettering.
Zwalharulzuki - I like the floating "entities" around your tree.
Iotrez - I logged in just to see your image. So original. And I love the buggy the old guy drove in on.
Trash - Were you intending to have this be a reflection of the tree from a pool of water? It looks as if the leaves are on top of the water. It is a bit busy though. And the leaves that are in the foreground that are out of focus see like they're floating because you do not see any branches.

@shadowman - I was trying to do a short focus of the center of the tree so that the near and far leaves would be out of focus. It enden up looking like seperate layers instead of one mass of leaves that get more into focus. Oh well.
