Im 17 and four months ago i made a goal to draw at least three hours a day. So far im staying consistent but the thing is when you dont have eyes pointing out just how retarded some of your artwork ends up being, its hard to keep from getting lazy. In this fifth month though im going to focus primarily on digital becase frankly, i have copious amounts of noobness. So yea hope you enjoy i plan on updating with at least two paintings a day. Crits and comments greatly appreciated.

good to see you want to push yourself, remember when you start digital painting the soft bursh in photoshop is not your friend, it makes everything look blotchy and muddy, its better to learn to used the basic hard round brush with pressure sensitivity on opacity.

try it!

Hi there,

Nice start so far. I agree with stormrider85 on the PhotoShop soft brush comment. It's best to stear clear especially when creating the 'outlines' for your work, perhaps stick to the softer brushes when shading in shadows and highlights. Also sometimes your colours are looking way to 'harsh'. Are you mainly using the colours provided in the pallette? Try using those and then tweaking the colours by adjusting the sliders so that you get a much wider colour palette going on. Try to stay away from 100% opacity too and use softer and lighter colours that have some translucency to them. :)

yea i did others other paintings today but this was the only one worth posting.

a jr nice lol I'm a senior. Thanks for the crit I will say its hard to get the muscles right in 60 secs lol. 3 hours a day is a crazy amount of time but really its not, just seems like it. I try and do the most I can weather(wrong spelling I know) it 7 hours on this day or 10 minutes on that day. Hope to see some more from your stuff is good, if you wanted to you could probably pick up a freelance job if you wanted to lol :D. Any who Happy Trails

Hey man, you've got a good start! My suggestion would be to do a lot of anatomy studies to help you understand the figure better. Do CRAZY AMOUNTS of it too. You'll definitely see progression in your work in no time if you do this :)

Chermilla
March 24th, 2010, 09:01 AM
Good to see you drawing some anatomy, keep doing this as much as possible! You can finds tons of nice references either online or at the libary - also Amazon have some great books available that aren't too expensive if you want to buy some!

I'm liking the Octopus under the ocean painting you've done. It would be nice to see you 'layer' this up even more. The lighting looks good on it so far. It's good that you're using the harder brushes more now but some of these paintings still look rather, 'fuzzy'.

I guess the only way I can describe it is that they look like my paintings before I've added a load more layers on top to build up detail in the image. This is what you need to start doing now. I would take one of your paintings that you have enjoyed working on and put some proper time into getting it looking a nice as possible. :)

The more layers you add, the more feeling and depth to the piece you will create. To create nice details try zooming in on certain areas of the drawing and using smaller and finer tipped brushes. Then when you zoom back out you will see what a difference it makes!

Good luck and keep drawing.

my friends don't really do fun things its more like we bring the fun to us. So really we could have a good time just talking for like 5 hours and it would be fun every second of that time. or we go out and look for stuff around where we live that we haven't seen because, hidden places lol

April 17th, 2010, 04:14 AM
Nice work so far. Your faces still need more work, it is obvious you are more comfortable with the body. Earlier someone suggested taking a piece and really polishing it and I agree with that. Photoshop has a great feature where you can open up a second window to mirror the working one so when zoomed in you can still have a small version so you can see the results from far away. Sort of like the navigator but better because you can paint on the second version as well.

Your enviros are coming along nicely.

A lot of digital work here. My few suggestions is to do some quick studies from life as well and to tighten up your brush strokes on areas you want to viewers to focus on. Right now the painting have almost equal edges and strokes, but it might be just style. Keep going!

Hello!
Looking good here,I can see the improvement!I really like the digital enviros, the anatomy could use some more work,I suggest doing some Bridgman studies,he is the Man!
My favourite is the city with the river at night, you've captured the lights realy well.
I have one tip to get people's likenesses:observe and measure.First you'll have to measure with pencil or whatever, but then your eye will get used to measuring distances(I am still no good at this while doing portraits, but I am quite accurate with measuring real life objects with my eye...I guess it comes with practice).
So nice job,I'll be watching you, keep it up!

P.S.:I am a noob,so don't take these tips too seriously!:P

I really love your creativity and imagination!!! That's something I'm lacking I think >,<

Not to say that your studies are not good or something like that, but I think that I've read a CA's "expert" said that doing traditional study will improve our study better than digital. I don't sure why, but maybe you can check about this on "Back to Basic" thread on CA (just search it... :))

Well... afterall, keep drawing! :D

wow your work is really showing a lot of progress! If you haven't done so I suggest downloading the Loomis PDF file (if you google you will find it) This will help you gain a better understanding of the human figure. I am particularly excited when I see your Admiral Ackbar portrait!

Keep going and don't stop, don't forget to work traditionally too...even if they are 15 minute sketches because those skills will transfer over to the digital realm.

@T-manxx1:That was a bit harsh, wasn't it?You've got no artwork to show to us whatsoever, create a sketchbook and show us what you've got...It's good to be honest but I think you went a bit over the top there.

@Lightmode108:I personally don't think your artwork sucks, you're showing a lot of improvement,I'm sure you'll be kicking ass in a year or two!So keep it up,draw, draw, draw!

Sup Lightmode, I'm jealous of your digital art and your character designs. I always suck at armor designs and faces, you're much better at faces. But, I'm not gonna go on about how much better you are, I'm just gonna say this. You're showing improvement, and I'm sure if you keep it up, you'll be a good artist some day :)

June 13th, 2010, 04:48 PM
you are already doing a lots of stuff from imagination, which is good. But, I would also suggest you to do more studies of human figure and anatomy. Good exercise is copying what others did - preferably someone who's work you admire. Keep it going, so far so good.

Good stuff, man but you need to work on your anatomy a little. Trying working with posemaniacs if you haven't already and if you want to get into a more depth anatomy, try Riven Phoenix The structure of Man series, You definitely learn a lot there.

Lightmode108
June 15th, 2010, 02:11 AM
here are some environments. as you can see im really noobish and the techniques that establish distance and depth, for example the futuristic ones . i really want to get better at those because those were the kind of art that were thought provoking and beautiful when i was younger.

thanks for the comments and critiques everyone i really appreciate the support =DD

DSmith
June 15th, 2010, 03:33 AM
Those last enviros are quite good!
I really like the renedring of the rocks on the left side of the first picture. The perspective feels a bit wonky at some places, but that can be worked out pretty quickly. When you want to achieve depth, look for these stuff:
-Have a foreground,a middle ground and the background
-Keep the composition interestion, try to lead the eye of the viewer with shapes,contrast,sharp/blurry transitions, etc.
-A good way of achieving depth is to have a certain rythm, like dark-light-dark-light and so on.(Like dark foreground, bright, detailed middle ground, and a dark background, then some light skies)
-put the "camera" to some unusual angles, that's a nice way of making stuff interesting

Here's some useful links:
Cool Speedpainting Brushes (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/?qh=&section=&q=speedpainting#/d12rnjv)

Even more cool brushes for SP (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=building+brushes#/d11shqn)

Well,I hope I could help a bit, what I wrote down is just what I've read,no personal experience yet,but I think these advices can be useful for you(for me as well).
Keep up the good work!

nice improvement in here. One crit that will be really useful for you is to always use a much LARGER brush than you think is appropriate. Using the largest brush possible gives a sense of urgency and vibrancy that you can't achieve with smaller brushes. It also lays down larger even areas of colour which gives your forms more solidity.

Keep on working away and its good to see you are back to traditionals again, doing solely digital is something to be avoided.

merry christmas!

DSmith
December 27th, 2010, 05:24 AM
Hey dude!
Sup?
Really like all the updates, your rendering is getting a lot better!
ThomasM has a good point there, using little brushes can be a beginner's trap, larger brushes pay of in the end,you should definitely use them for laying down the large stuff, and then you can do the details with smaller brushes, but always use the biggest size you can work with in the given situation!
Also I love that orange-ish landscape with the lake and mountains, really moody!
Keep it up!
