Hi, I'm a SCAD freshman looking for freelance opportunities where I can put my landscape/environment paintings to use, perhaps for cards or something of that sort. I check Craigslist and the jobs sections of CA weekly for listings related to anything I think I can do. I'm trying to get as much *paid* experience as I can while still in school, in order to increase my chances of landing a job right after graduating. Does anyone know of anywhere that I could try to land a small, freelance job where I can do environments? I've seen a lot of people on DeviantART post their Magic: The Gathering artwork, and it is usually a rare occurrence, so I was wondering if they offer the occasional freelance job or are under really strict NDA- I would assume it's the former, considering the cards are printed often and the artwork is generally the same from computer to printed material. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Are you talking about existing paintings or would you be willing to create stuff for hire? The jobs without figures in them are few and far between since most games, books and movies are character driven. It is especially difficult starting out. Your best bet is to develope some figure skills to help your enviro's.

Also, M:tG puts out a few expensions a year, so this is when the art is made public, it doesn't mean they commission little art, it means that it goes a long tme when you can't show it. However, M:tG (WotC) has quite a big budget for the type of work (cards) and are very popular and can afford very good experienced artists. It doesn't mean that it isn't available to newcomers at all, but it's certainly not something to do on the side for a student looking for little commissions.

Willing to create stuff. I just started my life drawing I class at SCAD today and I already learned a lot, so hopefully I can start adding figures soon. I'm just trying to find a way to earn a little bit of money after classes to pay for the stuff in between my loans.

Oh, okay. Thanks. I figured it was something to do with the contracts, but oh well I guess. I'll just keep looking. :/ Do you know any companies that are popular with newcomers looking for paid experience?
