Hello everybody,
I would like to invite you (matter of fact, ask for help) in a non profit graphic project. The product is a badge or emblem for use in the flag of a Carnival "bloco" in Olinda, Brazil. Rather than writing a traditional briefing, I will tell you about this project in a frequently asked questions style.
1) What is a carnival block, anyway?
A carnival "bloco" is a group of people that get together for street Carnival (forget about those gigantic parades of Rio de Janeiro). Direct translation is bloc or block. It can be very small or very big, from a few people to a thousand. Altough very informal, with no rules or laws about its creation, a "bloco" has some ob obligatory elements: a flag for identification, a marching band for playing the music and a name, that together with the flag, tells something about the nature or the history of these people. Very often, names are witty, ironical, funny, according to the spirit of Carnival. In Olinda, maybe the most democratic Carnival of the planet, with all kinds of people, rich and poor, black and white, men and women, side by side, everything happens around these blocks. They are a cultural institution and every year new blocks are born, like the one I am trying to create.
2) What is the project name?
I would say it is "Jolie and the Gorilla", Yes, by Jolie I mean Angelina Jolie, the beautiful, marvellous Holywood star.
3) Why this name and what does it represent?
There is an alchool hazed story behind this name (I can tell it to whoever accepts the project, since its is rather lenghty) but what I am looking forward is the image of a gorilla ripping off an Angelina Jolie's mask. The gorilla is a female one and is smiling between ironical and mischievious. In the background, the hills and streets of Olinda with Carnival raging on (reference material will bre provided).
4) What style should the art be?
I would like a realistic graphical depction, in the style of Mark Wilkinson's work.
5) What about the colors?
Forget about clean, minimalist designs. Brazilian carnival is vibrant, energetic, colorful. Besides the bright yellow and the plain green of the flag's country, every color can be used in the to potray the joy and excitement of Olinda's streets.
6) In which ways can I benefit from this project?
Since this is a personal project, with no other objectives rather than having fun and preserving Brazilian culture, this is be a not for pay assigment. Besides the work experience and the joy of contributing and joining a cultural initiative, you can use the final art in any way that you wish in order to promote your portfolio. And in the present time, a Brazilian theme can bring some attention for your work.
7) So, is there anything special about Brazil right now?
Brazil is an "emerging country", in the sense that its economical and social development has an important contribution to the globalized world. The popularity of president Lula, the discover of oil fields at deep sea, its capacity and natural vocation for renewable energies and most of all, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will make Brazil a recurring image worlwide.
Hope to hear from you!
Best regards, Marcelo
