Right on. Got some good stuff in here. So, since you are young and just getting ready to hit the pavement hard I would suggest you start with some anatomy studies. Got any anatomy books? Draw the illustrations. Learn how the human bone structure is put together and then the muscles. It pays off.
Welcome to CA.

Visible improvements here, Neon. I agree with Van, anatomy and proportion are the most important things to learn first. There are some great things online by Andrew Loomis, www.saveloomis.org, and plenty of great stuff here and at The Society of Figurative Arts, www.tsofa.com, both are well worth checking out. You're off to a good start, I'll check back in a couple days and see how you're doing. Welcome to CA and best wishes.

Oooh, its great to see earlier stuff. Since you have been drawing like that since you were 13, you must have a built up library of cool stuff/charectors, keep drawing and set it free! That was cheesier than the seriously strong chedder cheese toast next to me.
But seriously your inspire me to give more commitment to my drawings, and draw the cool stuff I like.

make sure to make guide lines before you start to draw/paint, i can see in your girlfriends portrei that your lines are off, make some facial or anatomical studies if htat is what you want, in a year or two you'll look back and be happy of the progress you've made, i know, i'm laughing now at my old stuff :)
great pics, and the key to progress is to think of what you do and how to improve it, and most of all, draw every day. EVERYDAY !!!
cheers ! and welcome to the boards !

Hey guys.
Van: Thanks! ya i have one book, i did download 5 loomis books, but i had to reformat this f-ing comp because its a bastard. i hate doing anatomy studies, but i guess it has to be done..woo.
IanE: Thanks dude. Read above haha.
Harry: Yo man, I dunno how many drawings i got, prob not as many as ya might think. I inspire you? wow thats rich haha, never thought i'd hear that from no one.
Hurricane: :jawdrop: Omg. Thee hurricane just left a comment...whoo hoo! Thanks man, you really inspire me. awesome stuff you got.
Yea i'm starting to use guildlines. hated them, but they useful, and my girlfriends face isn't as off as it seems, just that damn scanner, but a little i guess. Man old stuff really disinspires me for some reason, and i start drawing really crap...not good.
I draw nearly everyday... i think i give up to easy... oops.
I won't be updating for a few days, cause i've had alot of trouble with windows, damnit, gunna get linux soon hopefully tho its harder to use, i'll try anything to get away from windows.
Does anyone use linux btw?
Thanks all :yayca:

If that cow in you latest drawings is the same one you just dumped on my hand, Ouch it looks heavy, its cool caus it looks cool. As does the crazy creature above, like the head of some wookie like race, but a bit more skunk/badger style.
Never stop with all the crazy exaggerated stuff like the "evil turd". Makes a sketchbook more interesting than loads of life drawings.
Got any ideas for our TD self portrait theme?

Harry: No, the cow i dropped on ya hand was alot bigger. think it mighta given you brain damage too.
Ya evil turd is mr hankys evil brother, and i hate real life shit so i never post it. woo way to boring. Kinda stuck on the TD thing, Molly gave me a good idea tho, *cyber brat* lol. tho i'm no brat, i just have issues. but it sounds kool.

Tasha:......tut. stop sucking up to me, and go post more!! use the little *post reply* button alot ok. (thank you btw)
Jade dragon: Hey man. thanks, nearly as good as you now hu. you know its true. Need alot of practice to get anywhere near the level of talent here. woo. but i'm gunna do it! .... as if you need to or actualyl can get any better...... and hard work. woo, only a few things i'll actually work hard on, one is def drawing for sure.
Thanks again.
Nightvision: Hey, cheers, its the only one i'm good at..
Update is here!
Jonny: So its been said, one of the few things i agree on with people is my imagination. and ya, important, especially for a concept artist.
you make it sound so easy, better break out the life studies hu.

(Not sure if this has been said before here, didn't get to read all the comments) What seems to jump at me, is you look to be commiting to the first line you make, leading to very heavy linework. This is something I use to struggle with too, what really helped me out of that rut was working with blue pencil first to lay out ideas, then moving to final heavier lines afterwards.
You have some nice studies and are getting there in building forms, just loosen up a bit with the pencil. Keep it up.

Hey dude, glad you temporarily joined our group. I'm sorry I've been kind of absent, other wise you'd have plenty of my obnoxious comments and crits ;)
Anyways, I noticed you put a lot of work into the details of pictures, which shows you have the eye for it, but right now I think it's pulling your attention away from the rest of you work.
I say, the next sketch or doodle you do, simply work on the contours, no inner details. Try and figure out which shapes are appealing to the eye, and what lines makes people look away.
I keep looking at the megalith study, which shows you definitly have great potential, but like I said, for the most part you seem worried about the details.
Another tip, when working on compositions, find some master paintings, and simply trace where your eyes move, where it circles around. You'll notice a lot of artists you triangles and circles in their works. While this doesn't apply to sketches, there are a few sort of finished peices you have on here.
Anyways, I look forward to following your work, even when you get your own group.

Whats up :^^:
hey guys, thanks for the welcome. got
some anatomy studies up, 1st ever so crit me heavy people.
Ok you did asked for full hard critics to here they come,
dont get me all wrong, I still like your work and
I belive you have in you all to become a great artist.
First than anyting take my advise with a
pinch of salt, Im just learing like you :^^:
Its not bad for a first try, I think that right now
you are coping shapes but not quite understaing what
happens below the skin, let go of the pretty rendering and
use only lines and shapes to convey a sence of volumen,
the skull shapes on the first post is way off, the head in the lower
right fells detached from the body, the calvicle bones are in the
wrong place, the head in the middle of the page looking upwards
has lots of problems on the neck area, the central mass of the neck
should be like an inverted triagle, not a straight bumpy line.
The skulls on the second page are very flat, and the cervical column
of the neck looks too wonky, try placing your anatomical parts
on prespective, imagine the skull as a sphere and the mouth feature
as another sphere protuding out just below the first sphere,
the arms and legs on the second and third pages are the best
in terms of dept, even tho they still have lots of construccion
errors here and there.
Studing Is more about understanding and involving the brain
in the drawing process, IMO it should be as much brains as
drawing, so that when you have done lost of them it becomes
intuitive and then leave the brain part working for you on the back
of your head, studing can be pretty hard, and some time very VERY
frustraing but is the only way to get better, so there ya go,
keep on doing this but think of the reasons of why this or that
shape looks the way it looks before placing any line.
Well that is all for now, I expect to see more studies
from you in the near future, keep it UP, and have fun,
bw keep on doing the imagination stuff aside the antomy or
you will get saturated, belive me, I did that for some time
and it can be frustraiting, doing imagination things
can be a good release for a tired mind after a
study session :D
P. S. you prolly have heard of Kchens studies,
and of mentlers studies too, I sugesst using them as
base to understand how the main shapes of the body work:
Kchen:

mentler:

Nice update man, the necks came out quite nice. The head on the first page, bottom right, the dude needs more head in the back. He's missing like a third of his head.
The skulls need some work in the mouth area, and last, justwork on the fingers and toes.
Like I said, nice update.

There is some nice work in here. I personally think your ink works are the best, they just seem to have the most energy in them. The colored pieces seem a bit off, I think it is the media you are using to put them together. You are getting much better at anatomy (better than I am really) but keep pushing it. Even the scrawny guys with the thin arms will have muscles in there somewhere. Impressive sketchbook. Wish people would actually come to mine :p ; thanks for dropping by though. Keep up the work!
Pixeldragoon
September 11th, 2005, 03:13 PM
Some of your arms are reeallly short. That's bad because now your mind has that registered. Redo them all, and try to get them as accurate as possible. The muscles look good and seperate enough to study, uinlike mine, but you need to scale it propoerly otherwise you'll have short arms which totally screw things up. Good job so far! Keep going!

Hey Black:Neon, you got some good stuff going on. Most of your work is quite stylized, which makes it kind of hard to crit. For the anatomy studies, what I would say is watch the proportions. Some of the arms for example seem kind of short for their width, making them seem kind of fat. Just something to look out for :).

I like your ideas and you clearly have an active and fertile imagination, I think some of your best pieces in the thread so far are the looser more heavily shaded pictures, they show depth of character and have a three dimensional presence on the page which is no bad thing.
As for CC anatomy has already been flagged but I would venture a tentative look at line flow, you tend to have a curiously angular style which is cool but some characters would benefit from a slightly softer flow to their form making them appear more organic and in turn less constructed.
It's definitely cool work I like it a lot, gonna go see if I can do something just as creative, or shall I go eat the bannana cake? Hmmm....

It's really late right now, but I'll definitely try to go through your sketchbook thoroughly and offer some crits tomorrow morning. My main crit now is to fuckin UPDATE.

Okay, no posts in WAY too long. I demand you draw! Actually, I am really just asking. PLEASE! It is good for the soul and some people even are good enough at it that they make money. But you will never get that far if you DON'T DRAW! So, for the sake of the cheese, DRAW! Now that I am done embarrasing myself, adeu.

great stuff man. i love the one of the armchair. good values there. my advice? maybe slow down and be a little more calculating with your hatching. remember, the flow of a line will denote form, so work out what form the image needs before going gun-ho and giving it what-for, you get me? hah. you should post the results of your field-day (get it..? field-day... as in you painted a field? yes? maybe? no? ok! :D)

Hey, welcome to our sketchgroup Madcat!! My opinion would be that your style is fine but try not to get caught up in a style at this moment in time just learn as much as you can your style whether its an anime type style will eventually shine through your hard work and determination. Gonna agree with people on the "don't get caught up in style now"-thing.. Just keep drawing and studying and your own style will develop through that... Welcome to the ssg Madcat, glad to have you aboard, I'm really seeing some strides keep up the anatomy studies, and also draw from artist that you like, I would agree with the others who are saying don't get caught up with a specific style. But I would say if thats what you love, then try to push it into something of your own, really think what you like about anime. There have been a lot of solid feedback here in your sb. Hey man, thanx so much for the kind words in my book mate.
Hogarth - looks very interesting. Don;t have one of his books yet but I'm planning on buying the 2-book package thing from amazon which coincidentally costs the same as each individually.
The studies are great, very believable and a great sense of form. May want to work on your line some - Laim.c suggested a method to me where you put your pencil/pen down and start drawing, but you don't pick it up. Not picking it up means you tend to think more about it - try it out maybe.
Overall really like what I see, so I'm returning the favour.

About your question... yeah... learning to backflip on your own is very possible... I haven't had anyone to spot me for learning any of my flips... just go about it carefully! Find someone that can tell you how... live... and maybe show you... If you see a traceur or bboy or whatever on the street, try and talk to that person and see if they want to let you know a couple of tips... Since I've learnt on my own, I'm not too sure about the mechanics of it... I just kinda jump and do the summersault... ya know :D

There is something very...appealing about your anime. I wish that it would mirror your anatomy studies though. Try applying some of the stuff you learned form the studies in your anime. It's so good that you keep working on your anatomy. I find Hogarth is quite stylized, so it's hard for me to want to draw his stuff, even though I have both his books. But I guess others have already told you to try other people, so I won't repeat that . I really like your crosshatched work, particularly the landscapes, they've got a nice quality to them. Just keep drawing!

'stoph. haha, I had a crit saying i should forget rendering and sticks to lines so i know wats going on underneath, but i guess i could give it a try, for you:^^:
Bendragon still experimenting with shading techniques and stuff, as for the messy lines, its because i'm trying out a '1 line picture' technique, quite fun really. thanks man.
spiffiness I guess he does make things kinda.. big haha, but its easy to see and understand where everything goes, but nothing wrong with mixing the masters hu. Glad your liking my crosshatching, thanks alot.
ATTENTION
I'm feeling kinda pissed and down at the moment because i've just started working on a tattoo my brother may get on his leg if its good enough, so I've been drawing away and yet again this nasty little cartoonish style keeps popping out and making my work look babyish, and on top of that, my imagination seems to have pissed off on holiday. What i wanna know is this because I haven't studied enough, and the right things that things are going like this? This style I have that keeps coming round is kinda stylized and sometimes cartoonish and works its way into things i don't want it too.
How long does it take to pound that understanding of watever your studying ie anatomy, machines etc, into your head? I can see progress in my works, but alot of the time when i'm not studying, i seem to forget everything and fall victim to the style.. how do i solve this and get rid of this damn style?
has anyone else had this problem? help would be great guys, I wanna get this over with!

Hey, great work here from page one! Great studies as well. As to your question above: I've always had an anime style (specifically my faces) before joining this community. I started to do more life ref studies and such. I'm thinking the reason is that you've been working with this style for so long that you're very comfortable with it. When you're doing your studies you are focused on that aspect. But when it comes to creating something that is your own you fall back onto something thats familiar. I do the same thing. My no referenced works are completely different from my studies.
Crane
August 29th, 2006, 12:06 PM
Hey, thanks man, though the cartoonish style i'm refering to isn't anime, in fact i'd love to be able to have that as my style, well drawn anime or manga compared to wat it actually is. though i guess wat your saying also connects too to any style that i may be refering too.

Hi Madcat, you have some nice things going on here and there. You should try and get the basic fundamentals down of figure drawing and anatomy, which I see you are doing with the Hogarth studies, before going the anime route. I like anime and I'm not saying it's a bad thing and there's alot of brilliant work out there done in that anime/manga style. But I just think that you should be you when you draw before trying to be something else. Your work will show more honesty.

August 30th, 2006, 06:30 PM
Hey mad one. Love the little creations you are doing, keep at it, it must be forever fun you know ;)
Try to keep away from the cartoony, or else you'll just get stuck in it, draw from life instead, make you own shortcuts, cuz that's just what catroons are.
Good to see that you're doing anatomy studies, it'll pay of, I promise. Every time you draw something, a bit of it will get stuck in your head. And then you'll remember stuff from your sub-conciousness.
A think that'll help you when doing studies is to know proportions, then the arms will get the right lenght and the overall size will look good.
Another thing, I read that you have problem with your imagination. A great tip is to doodle, put the papers with the doodle away, then look at it from time to time. then make something out of it, draw a character or an environment from it. And with doodle I mean abstract-shapes. Just keep at it. And good luck.
Hugs!

August 31st, 2006, 06:07 AM
hey.The anatomy is getting pretty good, but don't worry about making it look clean.Anatomy studies are supposed to to show us and yourself how much you know about how the human body works, so show how you build the human figure, not how clean your lines are.Its very important to get the proportions and the shapes right first.About those manga head studies, i respect that artist, but i actually think they are useless. The head studies you should really concentrate on are the ones that focus on basic contrusction, planes and the sort.
But overall, you're doing good.Make sure you keep this updates tho, his still is a small SB.Keep it updated, whatever your grandma says ;)

Dude! I love that style you have going. I guess you could call it "babyish", but remember content counts for that kinda stuff. I don't think you could consider the cute kitty babyish if you were to draw it with, say half of it's skull exsposed... yeah.
Sorry, I've always been a fan of cute things in horrific situations. Used to draw that kinda stuff myself. Best way to get a new style is just to stop drawing it really. Though I have yet to find my style and it seems I can't draw anything unless I'm looking at it...
*edit* Derram You gotta grow into it, noone got good by complaining and feeling sorry for themselves man. just draw draw draw draw, if you still haven't improved by the time your 18 then i'll let you complain lol.

yo madcat, get ready for teh crits from teh internets ppl!
Ok-
The thing i notice, beside the anime style, is the weak rendering.
The best way to improve is observational studies and work from ref.THE BEST WAY!
It builds up your perception of light, darks, contrast and 3d sense.
If you want to drop the cartooony stuff, do ref stuff.
When you hit realism, anime seems so boring, and you wont want to draw cartoons all day long.
KEEP up the anatomy, keep drawing, 2 hours a day, no questions asked.
DRAW, DRAW, DRAW..improve, improve,improve.
Before you notice it, youll be leagues better.

yo, yo, yo, Just dropping in on your sketchbook and one thing i must say is that comic is pretty damn good the art style is very consistent and you write pretty well. Definitely keep that going. Now on your skeleton sketches try to maybe work on seperate pieces of the skeleton, like arms, skull, ribcage instead of all together. Good start but the proportions are a little off. The angle on the second one was a tuffy but you pretty much nailed it keep on drawing bro. ;)

Heya, just dropping by. The cute stuff is looking good all though it does feel slightly forced. Maybe because you are still feeling your way around and working on getting more comfortable with it. Also, the facial emotions don't have to be so varied from frame to frame. A good start though.

I somewhat disagree with ashrumm comment. It is good to study indivisual pieces when you don't understand them in a 360 degrees but if you just sudy parts you will not get better in seeing how they relate to one another. Understand? If you want to get better at drawing a bone...draw a bone but if you want to undertand the skeleton...draw the skeleton. Try testing yourself more to improve faster...that's my best advice.
Anyway, take it with a grain of salt.
oh, if you're looking to do art with other people there is always open canvas?

Good lookin' out on the studies! Lines are good, but you could do with some more time spent on the shading.. You could just put your pencil down flat and put down the planes... that way it'll go pretty fast while it looks less scribbly... like your shading does a bit now.
Anyways... sorry to hear about college and all!... hope everything is ok in the middle of nowhere, UK :) Give us updates when you get online again!

just popped by to check out your comic type thang....like it dude, you have a talent for cool lil characters-my one criticism would be that the hand written text doesn't do the images justice...the curvey letters take away from the cool graphicness....not a big crit, but I think that getting a more regimented typeographical style would make the pages even sweeter!...lookin forward to more :)

Hey Dave
thanks for dropping in, noones been here since like last year haha, i have no means of updating! hopefully should soonish though, glad you like my comic though, its fairly old, started a new one with better characters. ok the text, something thats been bugging me forever, i continue to hate my writing no matter what, what can i do with it?, is it just a simple as studying different fonts and styles?

Hey man....well I hope you get some way of rocking some more stuff up soon....I did some quick notes just to illustrate my point, hope you don't mind.....
People tell me I got pretty writing....some people say I write like a girl, but I think they generally mean I don't write like a retard:P anyhoo I did a quick bubble in my girly writing just to illustrate one direction you could go in. I don't think the problem is that your using a handwritten style....there are plenty of comics that use this, its that some of the letters are a little wonky (see those wonderfull red lines I drew:P). Another thing is that some of the curves of your y's and at the bottom of the d's dont sit too well. I dont think you need to study too much typography...mabe just try getting the type a little more regimented....look at some comics you like the writting stlye of and do your own take on it.

Oh sweet! thanks dave, you do have very nice writing, i'm green with envy! haha, be really, thanks for that little..'wordover' ? i see what you mean with the curves, they have always bothered me, i think i totally slaughtered my writing because i change it so much, now i have completed mixed handwriting, which includes the stuff there, and something that looks like da vinci's writing (The Da Vinci code got me obsessed with it) i'm gonna take your advice and see if i can make it right haha, don't mind if i study yours a little do you?

Some really nice stuff in here, good to see you studying from Hogarth! As everyone has probably told you before - practice practice practice. Never sounds like much fun though :-P Don't be afraid of using other people's artwork as reference to draw from too, it can often be a good way of finding out what you like about certain images.
Keep it up dude, post more!

your thumbnails are good , but only to the trained eye of an artist , even for your own sake , you should cut down the straight lines and try to go into details , even if they are thumbnails , like a showing hand , or the waist line , the shape of the head ... as for the digital portrait , try painting gray scale and once you got the hang of it you could move to color ... may the force be with you :D
Crane
February 21st, 2008, 10:36 AM
Well really they ARE for the trained eye of an artists... lol but yeah i can see what you mean, and so i shall work on this! and greyscale.. sounds fun, ok i will try and then update with the grey version! and/or try other pics too.

February 21st, 2008, 06:15 PM
The first board designs on both the first and second page are awesome. I would ride a board with either of those graphics; however, I would not ride a board that wide (or that short, depending on how you look at it). I think the designs would be more effective if you stayed true to the proportions of a real snowboard. Also, keep in mind that snowboards have two surfaces that can be designed; it might be nice to see both sides.

Yo! Good start to a new SB! You've definately improved from what I remember! Lots of interesting characters in here! Board designs look nice :)
Some of your shading works kinda contrary to the form it's supposed to describe... I know I know... it's the old "let the strokes follow the shape"-crit, but it's an important one ;) It can flatten shit out, or give the wrong impression of how the shapes curves in space when all the strokes run in the same direction... Hope it helps!

A latex mould test, I used flour to stop the latex sticking to itself and it works perfectly. about 7-8 coats of latex on the newplast cast so when I pulled the latex covering off it was strong and retained the shape I wanted.
I then stuffed with cotton to give it some bulk and support.

@-D_art-: Hey man, thanks for dropping by :) and thanks for explaining my question! I'll be checking out what you suggested.
@Eternal Apprentice: Hey, I found them by accident while looking for old books on ebay, they were under sketchbook joblot, always worth a check.
@Trix: I really should, to be honest it should already be full since I made it years ago, so ashamed :( I think it is about 6 of the red ones combind lol I may switch them up since the red ones are half the size almost and sometimes are uncomfortable to work in :/ need to flatten them out, hills are annoying.
As for the bones, I'm drawing out a figure from ref and then attempting to add bones from memory, it is VERY tricky, damn bones, but I think it is a good way to learn, I hope.
Not doing anywhere near enough to burn myself out, won't be happy until I fall asleep drawing every night :)

Heya Crane!
That's a lovely stack of pristine sketchbooks. I'm looking forward to watching what awaits them.
I like the sketchbooks; Lots of stuff from reference as well as imagination. Using magazines as ref is a great idea. Experiment a bit with line direction when shading. for example, try wrapping your lines around the form to indicate the shape. You were already doing this in some of the creatures from imagination, like in post #12. Nice job on using pens, by the way. Looking forward to seeing more creatures and characters!
Great to see some anatomy studies. The forearm is really complex though. You got it mostly right, but applying it is tough. Ulna attaches to the pinky side of the hand, radius to the thumb side. When you hold your arm in front of you with the palm up, the two are more or less aligned. Twist your arm (pronation (http://www.answers.com/topic/pronation), look at the picture) and the radius 'crosses over'. You can check (and draw) using your own body. Here's (http://www.joint-pain-expert.net/elbow-anatomy.html) another good link.
Musculature on the forearm is mostly located near the elbow and not as much near the wrist (you've done this correctly in the last drawing, its a really characteristic shape). You can feel the bones right under the skin at the wrist though, so you got loads of empty space in the latter drawing.
Using any particular reference for this? Like anatomy drawing books?
Also, do you only work digital or traditional only?
Crane

@Zou: Hey man, thanks for the welcome :) I plan to keep drawing until my hands are bleeding nubs and then use my feet :O More pictures up, just for you! don't you feel special :p
@Anthis: Hey, thanks for dropping by! Did you look at my older sketchbooks? I wasn't sure if you added the s on sketchbooks by accident and just meant this SB lol
That crit is brilliant, exactly what I was hoping for, thank you so much, really really helps :)
As for reference I have a very large number of photo books, anatomy books, recently picked up 37 nat geo mags for £10 on ebay, which is where most of my faces are from at the moment, the anatomy book I use most is cyclopedia anatomicae, don't know if you have it or what, very great book.
EDIT* The drawing with a lot of spare space on the wrist area is actually a rather large woman, so she really did have that amount of space in that area lol.
I actually have some pictures of my books here http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73635, a review thread I posted but didn't really take off :( I did purchase 10 more books over the week too.
I draw traditional mostly as I love it, I have a tablet and artweaver (recentish purchases) but haven't really been confident enough to try it out seriously yet.

I will just buy cheap, plain printing paper in bulk (500 pages) and try to fill those up.

@Eternal Apprentice; The figures were from ref, old nat geo magazines mostly. Buying bulk copy paper is just as good, you can always hole punch them and put some string and make shift covers on them to keep it together, I have several like that, one has 600 sheets in it.

Ohh man these sketchbooks are sexy, your magic pencils are sexxy and your latex creations, hmm maybe not sexy but very cool. I wouldn't mind having these in my room, must have for mad scientists :inject: LOL at monster-studies, try to focus on your proportions and ur skill will grow with time :sungod:

hi crane
those anatomy study are pretty good, loose and funny
but you should stick to real proportions for now
when doing anatomy study , you also practice proportions
you can also do bargue copies to practice proportions

very nice. try to understand the fundamental shapes, cube/sphere/tube when you draw it will save you a lot of time cause you will learn about the structure of things!

Wow. That's a crap load of sketchbooks! That's awesome that you're going to try to fill them all!
There's some nice stuff going on so far. I especially like your latest update in post #209. (Some really awesome studies in that one! Is that pen you're drawing in? If it is, you're a lot braver than I am!) What the proportions on the stuff you're doing from imagination -- sometimes things look slightly off. (Your line quality is kind of interesting, however, and it almost makes me gloss over the anatomy mistakes because they look kind of cool, instead of just like mistakes. XD)
Keep up the good work, you're improving really fast!

Whoa Crane, that's a respectable library of art books. Good stuff. I've recently started working on a collection as well. How's Rakuga King treating you? I got mine in the mail today, think it's fantastic.
Good to hear you've got a tablet. Was just wondering about whether you also worked digital since we've got the SSG studies going. Don't want to leave people out when deciding on topics, you see. Also, the Daily Sketch Group is a great place to have fun and practice with digital sketching.
Congrats on desecrating that first sketchbook! Finished it off with some great monsters. I like those human/monster hybrids; they allow you to try crazy stuff while practising anatomy and different materials. I enjoy the ones in #204 and the last post because you've taken time for some shading. Going well for you, try that some more!
Try taking small mini-breaks to take some distance and review the entire drawing to spot proportion issues. Takes a second. Drawing 'all over' the place rather than focusing on one area at a time can work too. I find that when I get too caught up in e.g. shading one area, it's easy to completely lose track of the rest. Resulting in stuff not sitting well together.

Hi Crane! Keep up the studies. Train your eye in observation and doing your best in putting them down on paper.
The Bargue drawings are a great way of doing that because a lot of the drawings are simplified into straight lines and distinguishable lights and shadows. This allows you to focus on the big shapes rather than the small details. Details are only secondary because if you don't have a strong foundation, everything else will just fall apart.
Also look at your angles, alignments, size relationships, negative shapes, etc. and always compare your drawing to what you're observing.

Nice update. (I know this time of year is crazy for a lot of people.)
The hand studies look great and the first picture (and the variant) is too funny. (Something about it just cracks me up.) If I had to nitpick something, I feel like I want to see a highlight of some sort on the eye of the seal, but that's really all I've got.
Keep up the good work!

the last terada copy is great
your lines are getting better with those studies
but try to keep that confidence with photo/life studies
remember: coping other artist is much easier than interpreting real life subjects, you must make your brain work much more
good luck with nexts

Your studies are great! I may be way off, but it looks like you sometimes rush through your drawings. You might benefit from slowing down and really concentrate on the markmaking. Keep drawing!

Hiya Crane!
Great sketches :D Nice start on the mega sketchbook challenge! Don't have anything to add to what the other guys have said so I'll just say "Keep it up, you can definitely see an improvement already."
Oh, I guess I do have something to add if you've not already heard it, sometimes it's easier to see values and shapes when you squint and it can help you to not focus on the details too much.
