Hi, I'm glad to have found this place. I am an absolute beginner. I'm almost completely self-taught and enjoying every minute of the experience. I work full time during the week and mostly draw during lunch breaks. I read alot, and follow youtube clips while practicing heavily on my own.

I really love this community of people and I hope to stay here to develop as an artist.

Nice to meet you all!

P.S. Except for this current post, all my work will be posted in chronological order. So please jump to the last page where I need your valuable comments the most!

Thank you!

[Edit]

I'll try to keep my most recent stuff in the first post as well. Hope to give and receive great feedbacks! :D

Reached "block form" in Loomis. I am totally stumped (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=183846). I guess this is where I take a break before I rip my sketchpad apart.

Another study with pencils and shadows and cute model, etc. Wish I could get some more feedback on these things. I don't goto art school so its nearly impossible to get constructive criticisms from peers.

This is a good start on your sketchbook. Especially the last two drawings. Keep working on anatomy, study Loomis and try to draw what you have learned from him.
Good work, cheers!

June 6th, 2010, 09:07 PM
You have some very interesting studies here. I am loving your gestures, they are extremely dynamic. Continue studying a lot, but make sure you are drawing from life too! Figure drawing is all about studying and practice, practice, practice. I would definately recommend studying some Bridgman, Loomis and Micheal Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention. Those three helped me so much. I also recommend subscribing to www.drawing-tutorials-online.com. That guy helped my drawings a great load. For a beginner you are doing some impressive work! But there are is still a lot to learn.

Good luck on your journey mate.

And if you wanna stop by my sketchbook, id appreciate it! Its needing some comments haha.

redpandafire
June 7th, 2010, 08:42 PM
@Alternative: Thanks! I actually have a textbook of Loomis already, he is REMARKABLE. I can't believe how well he knows anatomy! I will check out the other books and links you posted later too. :D

@Taroan and @olivepalm: Lol, I started to be "serious" about drawing in February this year. What that means is I stopped doodling at the side of my notepad next to my class notes and picked up an actual sketchbook. Began filling it sketches day in and day out. I have not stopped drawing for four months straight (except when I'm at work between 8 to 5 pm *sigh*), my hands actually hurt by the end of each session. =( Thanks for the encouraging comments!

Torso Study #1:

I felt i did not draw nearly as much as I wanted because I became fixated at the beautiful cast shadow in the photographs I used as reference. But time ticked away and i had to stop drawing. =( I spent too much time shading that damn first drawing!

olivepalm
June 7th, 2010, 09:22 PM
Sehr Gut~~~!!!!! LOOK AT ALL THE FANTASTISCH RENDERING ON THE MUSCLES ON YOUR FIGURES! i nEed TO DRAW NOW. JUST GOT SOME ALGEBRA...

CAPS LOCK CRUISE CONTROL FOR THE COOL.

olivepalm
June 7th, 2010, 09:23 PM
O forgot to ask.... What type of pencil are you using for the anatomy stuff?

redpandafire
June 7th, 2010, 09:52 PM
Lol thanks olivepalm. You should render some nifty things after your algebra homework. ;)

For my pencil, I use a 2B staedler lumograph(used for precise shading like in the first drawing) and I think its a 2B mechanical pencil with the thick 7mm lead in it (used for gesture and "speed" drawings like the last two pics).

olivepalm
June 7th, 2010, 10:03 PM
very cool. I haven't checked into the mechanical pencil category of creation utensils. But. I will. eventually. GOD i hate high school. gets in the way. TOO. DAMN. MUCH.

I do have a 2b staedler lumograph though. thats what I use mostly. its never sharpened though. there's my problem.

Thanks to all who've posted above me :D.

Today's torso study felt really shameful. My pencil motion was stiff and rigid and I couldn't get any confidence in my line until about 10 minutes before it was over. What a day...

redpandafire
June 10th, 2010, 08:30 PM
A bit over an hour of drawing today. I felt more confident with some of the angles, but did not draw the full body because many many angles still confuse
the heck out of me.

June 10th, 2010, 08:37 PM
Hey, this is kinda late, but, thanks for commenting on my sketchbook. :) You've got some pretty neat stuff here. The anatomy studies are wonderful and love your sense of value. Great work and keep it up!

redpandafire
June 13th, 2010, 03:19 PM
@Aresa: Thanks! I love your sketchbook too!

Todays post:

I actually was not pleased at this one at all. It was drawn really slowly, really unsure of the masses and volumes, really hesitant and overall just a pain to work with. You might not see all that though because of how I hid all my chicken scratch beneath the shading, but everything about this drawing came out differently than what I had hoped.

But I learn even from failure. And I'll keep on drawing until I get it right.

@Amanda Liu Cherry: You should draw the human form, its really quite rewarding. The toughest part is studying the anatomy. Its SO BORING.

Todays study: The leg. Its crazy how useful Wikipedia was for this study!

Great studies in here. I think im going to take sometime to study your value pics because they look like they would be helpful, or give me the artist you studied those from, if its a book I can get please let me know.

Actually I feel very stupid, everyone below has said its Bargue, and you said it was bargue. Ha ha

xxPurple Nugxx
July 1st, 2010, 05:36 PM

Great studies here; Your gesture work is incredible.

redpandafire
July 1st, 2010, 06:54 PM
@Koh, @Emil_ and @cgaddict: Thanks! I try my best. :D

@xxPurple Nugxx: The first thing I picked up was Figure Drawing for All its Worth by Andrew Loomis. This book is still on the internet if you do a Google search, although I think the family just purchased the rights again. I forget, I bought a used edition from Amazon for $30.

At some point it got too advanced for me to understand and I had to move onto a simpler approach taught by who I think is the best teacher I've ever seen; Glen Vilppu.

If you can save up your money while studying with Andrew Loomis, I highly highly highly recommend studying from Glen Vilppu:
http://www.vilppustore.com/Figrdvd.htm

Also, my anatomy studies are from Wikipedia. There are some great images on there from Gray's Anatomy that I used to figure out muscle names and placement.

About the bargue plates, I found them in a thread here at Conceptart when doing a search in the reference forum. I can't recall the link but they've uploaded some Bargue drawings that are NOT in the book and free on the internet. I study from the small 300 pixel images, sometimes using my ipod to view them. I only use the line angles, and shadow shapes information when I copy bargue plates. The rest I fill in with gut feeling, and thats why mine will look worse than the original drawings lol. I also dont spend days to weeks on them because I think its silly. I draw them so that I can mentally prepare for life drawing and study the fantastic mind and eyes of Bargue.

Good luck!

Panda, what is Cambiasis.

redpandafire
July 1st, 2010, 07:45 PM
Panda, what is Cambiasis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luca_Cambiasi

The pictures you posted in your sketchbook with the simplified geometric figures jumping on each other were drafted by Cambiasi and are how alot of people create 3-dimensionality in their drawings. By using simple boxes.

Another famous artist, draftsman and mathematician who inspired Cambiasi is Abrecht Durer, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albrecht_D%C3%BCrer

While studying Vilppu's manual, I became absorbed by renaissance era art. Its simple, yet elegant and chock full of knowledge to improve one's art. It really is a whole different world we dive into when learning to drawing. :)

@UmpaArt: Thank you! About 4 of them are referenced and the rest are imaginary. You can probably tell all the bad ones are out of my head! lol

Most of the time people say my faces are weak. Usually because I lose the symmetry or I overwork it, etc. I tried to fix both those things in my daily sketch tonight, but I feel as though I've barely improved. Theres something fundamentally wrong with them I think. I even tried to draw anime...

Another 14th century Charles Bargue study. The one on the left is incomplete, and I’m not completely satisfied with the one on the right. Its probably hard to tell but these drawings are only a few inches diagonal. Much smaller than the size of my palm.

I know a lot of people frown on Bargue studies, but I don't really mind them. They're fun to do because I think they're all complicated and technical, but actually the ideas are really simple. I never waste my time creating perfect accuracy, so all my Bargue studies are off. But I really enjoy re-tracing all his steps as if they were my own. But even so, I will never be as good a draftsman as Charles Bargue.

Study of the Michael Freeman photograph of a Khartoum, Sudanese woman working on the cotton fields. (Note: the hands and feet weren't very clear in the photo as most of it was burried in cotton; leaving that area completely unfinished)

I need lots of help with form, as I don't feel what I did brought out the form of her folds in all areas of her cloths.

In any case, it was a very interesting and fun experience for me. I will definately be looking up more Michael Freeman photography subjects.

Hey redpandafire I have been really enjoying looking at your posts. I especially like your Bargue's and I agree with your approach to doing them. I'm sure if you keep studying hard that one day you could be as good as him. You already have some lovely drawings and watching your progress is very inspiring. :)

let me say you are really good. i enjoy really looking at your work, and can only hope that by following studies as you have to approach the same area of ability you are at. Your imaginative work is really great, your contrast of tone, from light to dark, really shows depth and texture. your gaping alien type mouth thing, to me looks like concept art, or art from an instructional book; in other words, really good sketch!
As far as you perfectly imitating the artists you are studying from, i think you do a good enough job. i don't know what the original plates looked like, but what you have always seems to look anatomically correct, so i don't really think it matters.

all in all, i think you are really good.

Hey, your stuff's looking awesome! Your faces and figures are becoming better, your rendering is pretty damn awesome, and I think this just gave me an inspiration boost. Keep it up! As for doing Bargue studies, why not do one or two attempting perfect accuracy, just for the hell of it; it would probably only make your eyes even better at observing.

redpandafire
August 1st, 2010, 09:10 PM
@Marian Rowling: I've been watching your sketchbook as well, and the figure studies have been a great inspiration for me as well! We can never have too many figure studies haha.

@themegagod: Wow, you're way too kind! But thank you for the very encouraging words!

@jeremygordon89: You're right. Someday I will sit down and just measure out a good cast study to as much mechanical accuracy as I'm capable of. Just to see where my limits are and where I'm weakest. Thanks for pointing that out!

I really like a lot of what you have going on here.

I especially admire the flow and rhythm in your figure drawings.

@FreezeTheMad: Thanks. I'm just learning about color now. I didn't understand contrast at first, so I decided to copy what I saw, instead of try to see with my mind's eye. I will work harder on understanding contrast for future studies!

@Falchion, @Marian Rowling, and @InCOUM: Thank you guys sooooo much!

I decided my previous study today was just not gonna cut it. So I did another value study, and this time actually took the values into account.

Hi there!

Wow, the hatched pencil drawings are simply delicious to look at. It's also great to see a variety of skills being employed in a healthy mix. I really have to critiques at the moment, apart from perhaps too much smoothness in places is not particularly pleasant.

Great sketchbook,

Looking good man, your showing great improvement and i'm glad to see your experimenting with color. If your first figure painting is any indication, your definately headed in the right direction.

Really digging the torso studies you did on like post #80 on, showing nice form.

Only suggestion would be don't be afraid to draw the entire figure, you know, figure it all out, and slap some color on it, i'd like to see some more developed pieces.

Otherwise keep it up, nice stuff!

Haha Red Panda you used toilet paper, that's great! You have some lovely subtle tones in this one. My only crit is that the features look a bit to large for the face. Not sure if this is intentional though. Also did your friend like what you did for, I did. :)

Today's Update...

I tried to focus on the values.... But i ended up doing it for two hours straight. It gets really tedious after a while. And the eyes are overworked. Oh well.

Great sketchbook so far and you had a lot of improvement since your earlier posts, you definitely earned you another fan.... :)

Now for some crits that i think will push your art to a higher level:
A. You're really skilled in drawing a human body, but what about feet and hands?... try to make some more sketches and practices of those.
B. Try to draw more different things (buildings, cars and etc.) as well as animals and i would definitely would like to see a larger variety of body types and faces.
C. Like you said yourself often it seems that you gave a problem with proportions, you tend to draw the eyes and the upper part of the face larger than they really are.., this you can correct only with practice from refs, but more important spending more thought while you're drawing on the proportions.
D. I would definitely would like to see some more painting/digi painting experiments and sketches from you, don't stop only on graphite drawings!

Anyways hope i helped a lil and even if not,
Keep up the great job!

Alex.

Marian Rowling
February 14th, 2011, 02:28 PM
Hey RedPanda you are really out doing yourself at the mo! This looks really good and I like the mixture of greyscale refined painting and the black line work. I wouldn't worry too much about colour at the moment. It's a massive area to learn and I think having a solid understanding of grayscale first will make it easier for you. The way you are going I'm sure you will just naturally progress into it.

redpandafire
February 16th, 2011, 09:09 PM
@Marian: Thanks for the encouragement! I'm gonna try to add some color after all the values are painted in. Since I don't really know how to think in both hue and value just yet, I rather seperate the two for now.

I've been working with Michael Hampton in my first online class ever! Actually its probably one of my first real art classes lol. Anyways, he's incredible as a teacher! Hey RedPanda I think it's good if you are struggling with certain areas because this helps identify the areas you need to work on. I think all these look good and it's great the course is pushing you to a higher level. :)

Fallenangel
April 2nd, 2011, 09:45 AM
Great studies and sketches keep up with the hard work, if you're not making mistakes and don't struggle with certain areas it means that you don't work on what you need, to become better.
So keep up with the hard work! You're doing great so far.

@Marian: That's so very true. Struggling is all part of the game, lol. Thanks by the way.

@Fallengangel: I totally agree with that view! Thanks too!

... Today's Update: We're onto the legs this week and I thought I'd share a construction image on the major muscle groups. Since there were so many muscles to cover, we had to group a lot of them into basic shapes (eggs, tubes, etc). Also the pose should be familiar lol.

[EDIT] After uploading the 2nd drawing, I just want to say that I'm still dissapointed in my "hit-or-miss" understanding of shapes in space. I think I'm not the only one who notices that when I really got a handle of the objects (in this case muscles), my lines become more confident, shadows are clear, tones are on the mark, etc. But when I've lost control of the 3D space, everything looks a little flat, overworked, and difficult to read as a drawing.

I've never had a chance to study from a live model, but I'm guessing this is the importance of Life Drawing classes. I should be taking them within the next couple of months...

today i studied from a youtube video clip. For some reason its a lot better than photo reference, theres just a better sense of depth (duno why). Today's Update: I've been trying to figure out what exactly makes a good gesture. Aside from swooshing motions with your elbow, and adding some tone at the end, its really all about the indications. Seems my biggest mistakes in gesture is that I'm always trying to indicate too much information in too little time. For an essential part of the art, it sure is difficult to get the hang of.

I can see a lot of struggling in my own gestures today. Hopefully next time will go smoother.

Hey, nice to see your stuff here too :) The gestures look awesome, I always wanted to achieve such a style myself but never succeded. Tell me your secret :D
Keep up the great work!

@xinranliu: I was talking about CGMW Master Classes.
@jbrown67: Thank you very much!
@towy: Thanks!
@surus: Haha! Thanks for the compliment.
@raminafshari: Thank you. But there's so much more to go!
@AvisNocturna: Nelle! It's SO good to see you on conceptart!!! Your work is always too great. We should exchange tips some time? ;) Although I'm certain you've got waaaaay more knowledge to share than I do! haha
@Ulver: Thank you!

... Today's Update: Trying to study "proportion boxes" that Michael tipped me off on doing in Week 4'ish. I've always been notoriously bad with keep things proportional. Hampton construction helped here with the arm and lower legs (which are cut off from the scan). I miss Hampton class!

Your figures look great, you can tell that you learned allot in hampton's class. I'm curious how did you use Utube for those studies, did u play the clip over and over or did you stop it every so often. And congrads on being accepted to the 3d program, what school is it?

redpandafire
April 30th, 2011, 04:12 PM
@2kre8: The Youtube thing isn't something I'd recommend people take serious lol. I basically searched for any HD video featuring semi-nude models and replayed a short section over and over. It's just a little better than a photograph. As for college, Its called Dawson. It's the only one I can afford. :( But thanks for the compliment!

... Today's Update: Slightly frustrated. There is nothing more of a buzz kill when you set up a figure, only to realize you lost yourself in the process! Noobie mistake, I'm sure. But for today, I've had enough. Tomorrow is another day.

Wow RedPanda what a visual feast! I go away for a couple of weeks and just look at all that you've done. You are on fire! :) Really, really great work and it just keeps getting better. I'm excited to read about your 3D course and as usual I will look forward to seeing what you do.

The last measuring prestep scribble was very helpful to understand your drawing way. Please keep on posting presteps / measuring lines of your longer drawings!

Do you think it is essential to know the exact composition of muscles, at least as a begginer, or do you recomend simply foccusing on muscle grouypings and the larger masses. Mine suck :(

redpandafire
May 6th, 2011, 06:00 PM
@Mag-Neo: Thank you!!
@Marian: Did you have a good time on your vacay? ;) Also, thanks!
@surus: No problemo, and thanks!
@ToxicCalico: I think the its important to know the general volumes of large body parts (chest, arm, legs, head, neck) first, ie. is it a barrel (cylinder), is it an ovoid (spherical), or is it a box (squares), and to know which direction they point in (gesture). After that point, the muscles are simply a matter of connection point, mass, and end point (usually). So although I am always amazed by people who know the intricate details of anatomy, my personal recommendation would be to study large masses first. Group what you can together, and understand the planes and their general tilt first. Spatial layout and understanding is to me 80% of constructing the body (a little tip from Michael Hampton).

... Today's Update: is embarassing lol. I didn't have time to draw today, but I managed to construct two heads with a ballpoint pen. Again, just started with simple geometry and kinda winged the muscles.

Impressive updates! I really like your previous post, for my opinion it`s very good work. Ballpoint pen constructions look solid, but it seems that far eyes on both a bit higher than it should be (considering the placement of mouth and brow lines). Shading and lines are cool!

@Ulver: Thanks, your point about the eye position was indeed right!
@zeichenwut: Thank you for passing by my sketchbook!
@Parsakoira: Thanks for the tip! the funny thing is used to be told I drew necks too thick. haha.
@Fallenangel: Thank you. I'll try my best. :)

@Marian: ;) I would love a good holiday right about now...

Anyways, Today's update: Finishing up an old painting I started earlier in this thread. Its been a few months, but I finally got around to completing what I could. I'm dreadful at texturing clothing, so its definately looking weak to me this time. I have got to invest some time into studying that!

Wow, the latest painting looks gorgeous! But I also like the carcoal ( or graphite?) drawings on the last page. Really great stuff. I missed the Hampton class too, so I'm currently attending another workshop, haha. It helps so much to have a teacher, don't you think? Are you going to participate in the next semester?

Today's Update...

I've been so busy with a new job. It's not art related, so it's been quite draining on my mood. I've been actually kind of depressed that I couldn't draw/paint/study anymore. But even at a bad time for my art, I continued to keep a notepad and a ballpoint pen ready whenever I had 15 minutes to spare. Usually on the bus home from work. Not often on the way there because there are never any seats in the morning...

Anyways, as anyone can see they are doodles. Made to be thrown away, and are mostly valuable to me alone. A lot are from imagination, with the exception of me drawing the buttons from my bag. All are done on the train/bus so quite a lot of concentration was put into keeping the pen steady. But now I'm happy to report that drawing on a non-moving table is easy as peas!

Hey RedPanda well done with these. Baring in mind the kinda of movement going on when you were drawing I think you did great. I hope your new job works out and well done for still finding the time to fit your drawing in. :)

.... Today. Argh. There just ISN'T time to draw after 9 hours of work, 2 hours of commute, and 1 hour of chores + eating. Ended up rushing so badly, I'm not even sure why I post it! Maybe I'm just stubborn or scared that if I don't post then my work days will have broken my will!

Hey RedPanda these are better than you realise, so well worth the effort you have made to take time to do them. I know how frustrating it can be trying to find time to draw when you are tired out after a long days work. You are doing really well trying to juggle everything so do keep posting when you can.

@zeichenwut: Thank you so much!
@LtPlissken: Wow, thanks!
@Marian: I'm so very relieved when I think about all the artists out there sharing our struggle. Some of them work so hard that I think if I don't match their efforts, then I won't ever truly meet my own potential. Thanks again for the encouragement.
@Fallenangel: Thank you!

.... Today's Update: Practicing my line drawing. Used an old magazine ad with a very beautiful Japanese woman. I'd like to properly color her from imagination because the ad is in black and white.

... Today's update: I thought I'd attempt a line and crosshatch study of the next Lara Croft. I love her new look, but I don't think I captured it quite the way I'd have liked to... Pretty girls are so difficult to shade on the tablet.

Wow it feels like an eternity since I've last posted. I've been through a really rough patch this past month. Things were physically, financially, and emotionally low and unstable. I nearly gave up drawing at one point. :wtf:

But obviously I pushed through it. And now churned out (yet another) unfinished sketch. My friend bianca is leaving tomorrow. I wanted to give this as a gift to her. I'm hoping she'll like it.

You are a strong person so you will get over all the
