whoah - you need to look at logos... you should be able to reverse this, print it in B/W, ect...
sorry, but this is way too complex and not thought through -

err....I hate to say this, but neither. Szyslack is right. These are too complicated to make good logos. You need something that can print legibly in black and white and color. You have three color and that's good (4-color is more expensive) but I think you're being too literal. Using the book opening to a heart shape is a little more on the right track. The states are just confusing.
Brainstorm a little more and come up with three or four completely different ideas. Some examples:
1. The books opening up to a heart shape. (Try reversing the letters inside, instead of having them reversed with an outline.) Basically, you already have this.
2. A book seen tilted towards the viewer, with the pages themselves forming the heart. Have it above the lettering as an icon.
3. A stack of books with the heart embossed on the top one, next to the words for Heartland C.R.L.A.
This is just off the top of my head. I'm sure you could come up with a whole lot more ideas.
Oh, and you really should actually spell out the anacronym in small type underneath, since it's not a company where the meaning is well known like IBM.
