So, I've been lurking this site a little (especially when I need inspiration/helpw with my art and DeviantArt is chock full of... not... inspiring pieces). However, I am also one of those artists who have an interest in many types of mediums, and fashion design has been one of those interests of which I have not yet tapped into.

I was wondering if there is anywhere on this site that I have overlooked somehow... Or if the medium of fashion/clothing design is even an interest big enough here to be considered for a category all it's own?

Maybe it's wishful thinking... I dunno. This is also a question if any of you out there can help get me started in a good direction regarding this.

If this is the wrong section for this, just close it/move it/whatever...

Howdy, ma`am.

Fashion design per se is not that common here at CA, and I`m sure there are other sites out there more suitable for this kind of interest, but I`d like to suggest starting your own SB here, AND participating in weekly ChOWs - you get to design/illustrate your character, and it`s a great exercise on anatomy/style/composition and fashion design (costumes play a big part in character representation), so you should get lots of inspiration there. And you`d be surprised how some of our *studly* fellas here can design/draw one mean looking evening gown or other fashionable item.
*Gawjus, just gaaaaaaawjus!*

Stick around. You`d be doing yourself a favor ;)

Yeah, I've been hesitant to join in on the ChOWs, even though I'm big on character design... but I think I might start this week. I guess I didn't really make the connection when I posted this that they're extremely similar. Anyway, yeah, I guess I was looking more for help with actually making the clothing, though I know I don't need to find that information here, exactly. Guess I was just hoping for a one stop site for ALL my artistic desires, lol.

Thank you for the help, though :)

The thing with fashion design is that it's alot like architecture and industrial design. You have to know what you are doing technically in order for the design to work. Say, if you design an outfit for a videogame, noone cares if that piece can be made. However, i you design a fashion outfit that is supposed to be turned into a real piece of clothing, you need to consider what is possible, how fabric holds and moves, will it fall appart, will the person lose their pants? Will they be able to walk? Are the seams in places that make sense cut-wise (eg, do the allow the fabric to be shaped how it should be shaped.)

It's possible to make very wild things, but it means that the person designing has to be very good at complex structures/designing around limitations.

I agree with Quitsune here, but for the sake of the argument, let us not bother with cuts and construction and fabrics/fibers. In all honesty - who here from us actually WILL have to make clothes? Apart from me, that is...been avoiding it for far too long...

As for designers, I would recommend Galliano (a must - he`s the best example of really "pushing" the fabrics to their limits, and creating wearable concept art, so to say), Alexander McQueen (what he left behind him), and Garreth Pugh (sharp, futuristic looking style). Actally, google "Paris fashion week" and "haute-couture" - if that dosen`t inspire, IDK what will :geekg:

Well, in all honesty, if you don't intend for your designs to be made into clothing ever, you can't call it fashion design. You can call it "character design minus the character", or costume drawing or whatever, but it's not fasion design which is:
Fashion design (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_design) is the applied art dedicated to clothing and lifestyle accessories created within the cultural and social influences of a specific time.
...

Fashion designers work in different ways. Some sketch their ideas on paper, while others drape fabric on a dress form. When a designer is completely satisfied with the fit of the toile (or muslin), he or she will consult a professional pattern maker who then makes the finished, working version of the pattern out of card. The pattern maker's job is very precise and painstaking. The fit of the finished garment depends on their accuracy. Finally, a sample garment is made up and tested on a model.

In the same way IDW is a very fancy name, but industrial design designates designs that are meant to be made into something. So the art that is made in IDW is NOT actually industrial design. It's more like prop design more of the time, or you know, a sub branch of concept art.

If you draw costumes that can't be made into clothing, you are not a fashion designer (if you draw designs that can't be made into working objects, you are not an industrial designer and if you can't draw building that can be built, you are not an architect.)

It doesn't mean that you can't draw pretty machines, outfits and buildings for fun, or even for money. It just means that there is another name for that.
