Directing the Story

It's a book I have which I think is very good, but it's more towards story than storyboard. It goes through a story using storyboards throughout.

I've a review with some pictures on my blog:
parkablogs.com/content/book-review-directing-story (http://parkablogs.com/content/book-review-directing-story)

This book is usually priced at $26.40. As I'm writing now, it's $20 on Amazon.

Here's an entertaining storyboard blog

Once you understand a bit about cinematography and film theory from books, definitely check out some DVD's of directors you like. Whether it is animation or live action the principles are the same. Go through the movie and do 30 second drawings of screens, ask yourself what the director is trying to get across in the shot and why it was composed that way. was it an establishing shot? Did the camera pan or cut next? Do hundreds of these drawings and you will get a real feel for what goes into the film. You start noticing more things in great movies from doing studies like this.

Also, some movies have behind the scenes storyboards on their special features, then how those translated into the film. I know 28 days later has something like that but I am sure there are better ones than that even.

Have fun.

Shot by Shot is an excellent book if you are interested in storyboarding. http://www.amazon.com/Film-Directing-Shot-Visualizing-Productions/dp/0941188108

Books on storyboarding are pretty rare - there are only a couple I know of but there may be more now.

15 years ago or so there were many books on the "big sfx" films of the day that had tons of storyboards - Indiana Jones, Terminator, One of the Star Trek films, etc. I would look for those. There is a strong correlation between comics and stroyboarding of course, but SB is a bit mor etechnical and is a tool for visualizing cinematography rather than an end in itself.
