I'm sure this has been asked a million times: But is the cintiq's main advantage for drawing? I have used a 21ux for a while and I feel like I am a better "painter" with the intuos 4. I feel like the cintiq offers no real advantage for rendering or blending. Does anyone feel differently? I also get the feeling that the small cintiq would be bad for painting because it is just so small that you would be hard pressed to get at the tiny detail.

I've never really used one, but the only real advantage the Cintiq has over traditonal plug in tablets is just being able to work on screen. Weither is's better for painting or drawing is up to the artist. I have a Tablet PC and an Intuos 4, and I do find painting a bit easier on the Intuos 4, but I think that steams more so from my habit of pressing very hard when I paint, and the fear that I'll press too hard and break/scratch the screen on the Tablet PC.

But the 12 inch screen size on the smaller Cintiq shouldn't really pose much of an issue. All the Tablet PC's I've had have the same realative screen size and thats never once been a problem for me. When I have to work on tiny details I just zoom in.

I've been using a Cintiq 12WX for almost a year. I did use an Intuous before that. I think the Cintiq helped me greatly in all aspects of my 2D digital work. Digital Inking is easier and drawing is definitely easier. Painting is easier but has been a little tricky. I often have to display the same screen on both the host workstation's monitor and the Cintiq because they colors on the Cintiq never seem to be quite right. I've tried calibrating both but Cintiq always seems a little darker.
But bottom line, removing the mental shift you have to employ when your hand and eyes are separately focused with the Intuous with the more natural Cintiq is worth it.

I know what you mean about the mental shift. it is almost like you have to learn to draw again when you start working on a regular tablet. I learned to draw analog with a pencil back in the 90s. And then around 2000 I got a tablet and took about 4 years to learn to paint with it. then when I switched to a cintiq I was kind of used to being able to see through my hand. So I sold it. But I realize I am just not very good at drawing with a tablet. And I will get one again - but I am betting there will be something better that the big assed heavy bad lcd rocking 21ux pretty soon. And I am hoping it will cost less than $2000.
