Hey cool... it's one of my suggestions. Does this mean I'm obligated to participate? I'm off out, but I'll try to do something later on.
*Note to self: Try to stay sober tonight.*
Hagac - Love the anamorphic look. Real gritty.
OLSEN - great brushes and shadowy characters.
kaptah - Sweet. Overcoats and rain!

Thanks for posting those links, Digital. I saw todays topic and drew a blank, so having some sort of ref will help!
Plus, now that I think about it, there's always Blade Runner, but I don't have time to watch it today.

So far i love all the images. Especially kaptah.. good atmosphere.
I'm no good with painting in colors (nor bw), but gicing it a show later after practice. Just need to take a snapshot of the lines from paper, and see what happens :D Hope it's gonna work out.. no scanner.
Love noir mood :D
BTW awsome brushes on OLSENs, and i really loved yours Hagac.. perhaps because that was how i was first picturing this topic painted :D :D :D

Thanks for the comments, but the brush i used is a preset brush found in painter8, so i cantīreally take any credit for it. The brush is called scratchboard rake, give the brush a try if you have the program, itīs great fun. :)

dunno if this is very futuristic, but i've gotta study hard to master environments with interest...
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/fisite/futureNoir.jpg
they're much harder to do than characters imo,bc you cannot say "this thing has this function,so it must be there".a stone can be anywhere in a landscape and have no function at all....that's one reason i find environments so hard to do.

GKSmith id never worked in black and white before now and the lack of colour realy does force you to work quicker and concider form alot more. I realy enjoyed it I think I might try more of this.

Hazzard. I think im going to continue black and white as well and maybe afterwards, glaze in some color, like the old masters. Black and white is a lot faster. I also think maybe I should have used a reference for the figure and background. Did you start yours on a black background or white or a grey? Mine started of with a grey of about 60% I believe.

okay i tired of working on it. Yeah very much inspired by dark city. I agree B&W is suitable for this topic, but a blade runner and matrix are considered a form of noir, so i think any color in high contrast and shadows works.

Lots of great stuff:
Hagac & Kaptah- great stuff amazing amount of atmosphere.
Olsen-I love it. My fav. so far. Very nice.
Digital Gannon- nice progress thus far but the face in the lower right is rendered better than the one in the center
Sunny- i like what you have so far a lot. Very gestural but really intriguing.
I really need to find my Wacom tablet.

Hagac, Olsen & Kapath: Excellent mood in your pics. They almost look like they could be from the same movie.
Catapult Beetle: I really like the gritty film look of yours.
GraphicMaster: Love the computer screen effect. Classic noir tension with the guy and gun coming up behind.
Hazzard: Good for five minutes. I'd like to see more time on it though. You've got an interesting setting, but something about it is bothering me.
Sunny: I like this as a starting point. Try refining it some.
GK Smith: Good work. The character needs some work on the arms/hands. He almost looks like he should be wearing a Zuit Suit.
Matt Smith: I like the timelessness of this one.
awalloffire: Good concept, but I think the composition needs a little work. Is that a mech in the background? I can't tell.
Carnifex: The function of objects in a landscape or environment is to lead the eye. The stone will be there to help direct the viewer where the artist wants them to go.
digitalgannon: Good compositioin. Your guy with the knife needs to be looking at the lower guy. The lower guys' visible eye looks too large and too bright. Also, the jacket belt on knife guy looks like it's being held up in space with a string.
Kartoffel: I can't tell what's going on in your scene other than a guy in a spotlight of some sort.
Hunger_Artist: Black and white may rule (you'll get no argument from me there) but this one doesn't carry your usual strength. Specifically, there's no characterization here that we've grown used to from you.
Mad Giraffe: Good start on this. Yeah, toning can be rough. Not sure if they are in a bar or an alley. I'd turn the guy on the left so he is facing the other direction towards your focal point (the guy in the foreground). It will help with the compostion.
Johannes: It looks like you are doing a good job facing your horrors. Just keep working at it. Before long they will be your strength.
mog: Good start. Just focus on the character and don't worry about coloring it. It's noir, so it's supposed to be dark with harsh lighting, so go for b/w.
digitalgannon: same points as above. Like the look though.
Matt Dixon: I like this one a lot. Good setting and character. Is his left hand behind the coat? If so, it wouldn't be billowing quite like that.
young paddy1: Excellent job on ol' Rutger there! Very good.
Dave_Lynch: Cool robot w/ pistol. Looking forward to seeing it inked.
Here's mine for the moment. Still working on it. May post an update later.

digitalgannon
February 11th, 2004, 05:57 PM
GK:i didnt really keep track, unlike yesterday's DSG. But i laided the ground work out in about 5-10 minutes...took a break then worked on and off for about 2 1/2 hours. Its far from finished, and there are few parts i would have changed, though im done today and its all for fun.

Heya,
I've probably got about an hour or so in on this one as of its posting. I haven't done anything further, yet.
However, that's on this piece. I had a whole other city scene that I did on paper that I scrapped cause it was too difficult to see what was going on.
I worked digitally on the this one. It's 1700x2100 @ 300 dpi. I typically reduce the canvas down to 50 to 25% while I work on it so I can see the whole thing in both Photoshop and painter. This also makes for a faster go for me as I'm working larger areas and not detailing the hell out of it.

GK Smith - About an hour.
I'm not commenting on individual pics or I'll be here all night, but I did want to say that the quality of submissions seems to have improved a great deal since I was contributing regularly. I recognise a few names that seem to have been on the talent pills..! Great topic!

dingoegret: Strangely, I actually really like this one. That light just doesn't stand a chance.
Bretton: I *love* your critters/droids/things.
Signature: Hey, we *all* have to use the lens flare at least once. I like the dynamic in your picture. I also like your atmospheric (or lack of one) - gives it a very foggy feeling.
Freakt: Rather apocolyptic, but cool. I'd like to see more work on the guys' face - just to bring it out some from the rest of the image.
Shelldragon: The cyberfaeire is cool. I like the idea. There's something about the guy that's bugging me though - he looks like he might be a tad off balance to the left.
Johannes: Gamma trouble or no, it came out looking great.
Cybot Floor: I used to play Shadowrun ages ago. I like the PI Orc. (Piork?)
micmac: Nice silhoette. Lighting on the posterior is slightly off though. Too much on the left.
Iotrez: I really dig your crazy angle buildlings. Your robot guys are interesting too.
Thrash: the extra time shows. good work. I'd like to see more of the face, though. Maybe next time?
MIKECORRIERO: Hey guy, I like yours. Sort of reminds me of the workerbees from Babylon 5.
moops: Looks like another scene out of Blade Runner. 'Cept for the girl. Cool pic. Throw in some blue form below to really build a dynamic tension.
digitalgannon: The edits are looking really good. Thanks for fixing the freefloating phantasmal coat belt. It was freaking me out, man.
GK Smith: Wow, this looks really good. Great job. Watch the size of the head (a little small) and those freeflaoting phantasmal coat belts. They freak me out, man.
Matt Smith: Hey, looks like your guy woke up and is out for revenge! Good job. Check his right hand (gun hand) - it looks like its missing part of the hand. Should be visible on the other side of the pistol grip.
WhiteC: Dude, been there, done that. Have the emotional scars. Lots of energy to your piece.
shadoman: Really cool character concept. I'd run screaming. Check his eyes, they're not level with the rest of the head.
Here's a second go at mine. Still working on it and need something to put in her left hand (raised hand) other than a piece. Any suggestions?

Here is the "finished" version. It has its faults but then again this is a sketch. My stuff seems so static and stogy. I guess ill just have to work on that. She has an elongated neck because she's a robot. Yeah thats it.

oregano- nice pallette, i really like how rough the background is.
shadoman- nice texture and good mood
whitec-goddamn love it. small rough and iconic- terrific
gannon-better still. the lights more believable now- theres other ways of making something supernatural besides leaving out detail.
thrash-sweet. clever handeling of background and wonderful feel on the "paint". sexy subject too.
iotrez-very johnen vasquez
johannes-lovely bit of abstraction
bretton-AMAZING compostion. i love it and will be "borrowing" the idea. very nice.

Too many great pieces today, to comment on all (lame excuse , I know)....but I will say the first posts were some of my favorites, black and white always brings out some cool things.

Does "noir" have to mean B&W? Color ... where's the color?

I think the "noir" part of the topic is taken from "film noir", older films that is famous for their high contrast shots in black and white.
