http://216.71.84.80/devineillustration/zombiequeen.jpgThis is my latest oil painting .
She was painted on masonite 20x30.
I was asked to be the offical artist of the Chiller Theatre Con I noitced that I didn't have a single horror painting to my name, so I painted one.

this was pure fun to do. I figured that she was so aluring that the poor dead fellas fell head over heals in love with her and would follow her to where ever.

the guy on the left was a tip of the hat to the dawn of the dead movies from my home town Pittsburgh Pa.

When I was in high school I had an art teacher named Ralph Langer, on the weekends he helped out with the make up chores on the Dawn of the dead movie.
How cool was this! he would bring to art calss the foam appliances that were damaged for us to have and try out !
That was a really fun class.

Bill Cardill, the tv reporter in the first movie , was our local weather man and he had a late night horror show called Chilly Billy"s chiller theater.

I don't live in Pittsburgh now but I have fond memories of it.

Another great painting, how much reference did you use for this painting? Do you paint from life? beautiful!!!:D

I have always used reference.
Once I design the painting in my head I sketch it out and only then do I shoot reference.
The gal I used in this painting I have worked with for over a decade.
She can hit the character and knows how to move .

I wish I had the time to paint from life, but I do try to do studies of figures and scenes of my house and yard.
Sometimes working from photos only you lose your sense of airyness if that is a word and by painting from life, even if it is a study of your backyard will help greatly.

Another danger of photo reference is that it sharpens the edges around forms and tighten up the values from light to dard.

A good thing to do is soften the edges as the light wraps around the form.
I will try to post an example of this soon.

:D I wish i could make that smiley face bigger! This is one of my fav's!!! I had the pleasure of seeing this in progress, and when I saw the finish I was blown away. When you see one of daniels paintings in person, they almost seem backlit as if you are whatching them on a flat panel TV (and if Bill Gates has his way, that is the only way you'll see them) All the little bits of orange light creeping through are such a nice touch. One of my favorite things about this painting is that it wasn't really a commission and you can tell that he loved painting it. I think somehow Daniel's been taking a more personal approach to his paintings and it's paying off. Keep it up Daniel, I can't wait to see what's next!!!!!! oh yea and POST SOME SCULPTURE. You KNOW you're the man at it!!!
