hey guys

Im posting this coz im in a huge dilemma in regrads to my university course. Im currently in my second year at staffordshire university studying games concepts design. The course is a BSC not a BA and the reason for this is that the vast majority (80-90%) is geared towards teaching us the science of subjects like aviation design, matte painting and character design. This would be good if it wasn't for the fact that we learn next to no art. We have been taught how to draw things like noses, mouths etc but we have only had one semester where we have life drawing and now in our second year we are studying more 3d than 2d. We are learning mental ray so we can produce a 3d visualisation of a building we have to write a report on. We did do matte painting last semester. We were taught about the properties of rock, water, air etc and this semester we are learning to do animated mattes using after effects. We have discussed with our tutor the fact that we dont feel we are getting enough guidance in terms of illustrative skills but it doesn't seem to be making a difference.

Basically im not sure wether or not I should stay on this course. I have learnt more 3d than 2d since I arrived and I really enjoy that side of the course and to be fair my course literally started last year so i guess we are the guinea pigs, but i don't want to get into thousands of pounds worth of debt and not get a career so the course can find out what it needs to be teaching and what not.

I really need your input on this guys coz I don't know what to do for the best

I started a BSc in Architecture 4 years ago but I gave it up during the second year for the reasons you've stated. If you're in it for the art side of things, and the work set doesn't offer and/or look for that sort of thing, then leave and find somewhere that fits the bill. I don't think the course is that important as a degree, rather, it's what you learn and apply in the real world. Look at areas that you want to follow. I enrolled in BA Illustration last year and I'm really happy to take a more creative route. If you can get what you want out of the course then it's fine, make it work around you if possible. If you see yourself in a better position then you've got the rest of this term to decide if you want to defer to somewhere else. Don't learn to do something that you're going to hate for the rest of your life.

@brujahbart, did you stick with it or leave?
