After seeing so many beautiful art works, it really needs courage for me to apply for a sketch book. I am pretty new here, hope could learn from your critiques.
I am a media design student in age 20. Because I don't have a solid understanding of traditonal art, I am not good at coloring,,, Pencil Sketching is ok I guess,,,
I just started my digital painting recently. It was fun but difficult in some aspect,,,really need more practice,,,I hope I could update often and learning from you guys' masterpieces!!
Here are some pictures I am working on recently.
Sorry for bad English,,,and thanks for your critiques!!

Welcome to CA!! Nice start to your sketchbook. To bump up your painting skills if suggest just painting alot from observation and imagination. Post some drawings when you have the time too :D

Another small practice of bust,,, I give up finishing the last one because I can't really find the solution of uncomfortable coloring,,,
Try to finish this one, and will start doing anatomy studies!! So excited that I found how impoertant of anatomy in this field~

Hi there! This sketchbook is a very good start.
If you want to study anatomy, I suggest starting with Andrew Loomis books (they are available for free on the web). Read what he has to say and re-draw pictures from the book, keeping in mind what you learned from the text. It requires a lot of going back and forth. Draw, read, draw. But it pays off in the end :]
As for life drawing, you can easily set up a still life and draw that :D Start with simple objects and move to more complex compositions. I can't give you much advice on drawing people from life because I'm too uncomfortable drawing them on the street or wherever x) If you have a big mirror, you can always draw yourself I guess.
Good luck!~

It just takes some time Queen, yes copy the drawings in the book and copy them over and over again :D Add some more contrast to your digital paintings, all the colors have a similar value and saturation. Do some still lifes and try to see whats going on with the colors.
Your doing well keep it up.

Donna-Thank you for your advices on anatomy studies and life drawing. I will check the book on the internet. I hope I can start this part as soon as possible though I am quite busy recently,,,draw, read, draw!!! Thanks again for comming!!
Dy.laneA-Yes, just like what you said there is little saturation and contrast,,, I do need more time to do the investigation on others' art works and still life drawing. Photo drawing might be another issue for me,,,I will keep working on this picture to add more color and contrast as possible. Thanks!
Thanks both of you, really learn some information!!

Cool stuff queeny. Hmmm how are you going about coloring these? Are you oing grey scale then useing the color blend mode to colorize the images? If you are I would stay away from that! Do straight on color, its hard but you will learn alot.
QueenWorm
March 9th, 2010, 07:19 AM
Dy.laneA-Well, that's what make me feel frustrated on coloring,,,I "don't" work on coloring like painting in gray scale then create another layer, changeing blending mode,,,I do pick colors from color picking panel, but I just don't have courage to choose those high saturated colors,,,My works in between grey scale and colored,,,Just like you said it's quite difficult, still struggling,,,Is there any way to learn about that? I think the only way is learn water color or something like that, maybe after I graduate form university,,,
Thanks for your comments!!

Hey Queen! Hmmm I think a good way to practice color is to either do quick, really quick color studies from photographs. Don't realyl worry about rendering all that much just make a quick thumbnail of the blocks of color you see.
Another good way is just a simple still life of any old house hold object with a very simple shape and try and copy the colors you see.
Its fustraiting, but that only means your learning!!

Nice sketchbook, you seem to be tackling a lot of different things at the same time which might be overwhelming, but you seem to be handling it fine. As far as critiques, I think you can improve your values a bit more. Perhaps try painting in greyscale for a bit and tackle colors at a later time?

Yip, more head practice needed.. I struggle a lot with it too, so don't worry, it takes a while but just keep drawing faces and experimenting. Study from photos and life btw.
First render, the lighting looks strange, I mean the scene is nice, you've got it nicely textured, but the sky feels like there would be a more blueish-greyish ambient light coming into the room. The colour of the lights in the room are more yellow, and we can't really see the light source either, so it is difficult to judge whether it would be that yellow. I would start by getting the ambient lighting done first, and then adding interior lighting to see.. Of course, I don't know anything about 3D programmes, I can't stand computers and 3D software, so you're on your own there, but hopefully that helps. =)

I think the eyes was over_painted so they are not quite fit in with the face. Any solution on coloring eyes?

I like those robot things in post #29, your face topology isn't a bad start, but just because it's all quads does't make it good, it's still relatively messy in terms of edgeloops are how they join together, which damages the meshflow.
I know it's necessary to use them 2 or 3 times over all but try not to get too many 5 star points together(where there's a vert with 5 edges) altho its better than a triangle when subd'd to the millions it will cause the mesh to pinch and poke out.
keep it up.

<3._Thanks!!
^_^: Thanks for your comment! I kind of understand your perspective. I do have placed too much edge loops and I know that's not a good start now. I think it was because I don't really understand the structure and anatomy of human, so I can't creat a head in 3D more logiaclly..
How people work in 3D deal with 5 star point and trinangle? Since they kind of help me to change the mesh flow~

Thanks for comming to my sketchbook!! You improved so much in 2009! How did you do that? Could you share some of your ways of practice or books? Feel a little lost recently..
Great works!
Thank you :). I started art school in 2009 so I had some very good teachers pointing the way for me, so that helped a lot. I didn't have the focus to do it on my own. Honestly though, you're pretty far beyond where I was when I started, so I wouldn't worry. The best advice I can give is the most often given and the most frustrating- draw! Draw like a fiend. Draw all the time, carry your sketchbook, draw everything and everyone. Continue doing studies. There are a lot of things that someone can tell you, but it won't snap into place without practice, and if you're practicing you'll find most of those answers on your own. In other words... keep doing what you're doing :).
More specific stuff- the structure studies you're doing seem to be helping a lot and you're picking things up and incorporating them into your digital work. I'd say you've got enough under your belt now that you can give Bridgeman a go without getting confused by it, get his books and copy every drawing out of them. Keep an anatomy book at hand for when the drawings don't make sense. The knowledge of structure in there is invaluable. I'd also say set up some still lifes and do a few long, extended studies, the kind you spend days on. It's important to get the hang of subtle form/value/color.
Read a lot too, everything you can get your hands on. Some blogs you should keep up with- Underpaintings, Gurney Journey, Lines and Colors, Stapleton Kearns, Illustration Art...
Anywho, hope some of that is helpful. Keep up the good work and don't feel lost, you're doing what you need to be doing already. All things take time :).

Hey Queen Worm, very nice work in here so far. It seems your strength lies in rendering out values with keen precision that produces a wonderful illusion of 3-dimension forms. Your weaknesses are in structure and color, so try to focus your studies in these areas. Your anatomical studies look great; try to keep those up and it will really help your more finished work over time.
For your more finished value-focused work, I think you might be jumping into value a bit quickly. Once you get the linear sketch done, take a moment to step back and analyze it from a distance, like a few feet away. If you're working traditionally, you can lay your drawing on the floor and stand on a chair to gain some distance. Try to look objectively and critically for proportional mistakes, and fix them before you get bogged down in the details of complicated value gradients. At least when working digitally, you can adjust and tweak your image to correct these inaccuracies, but it will save you a lot of time in the long run if you can develop the habit of correcting these problems earlier. (And it will really improve your traditional work where it's much harder to go back and change structural elements.)

DariusDS-your architectures in watercolor(?) are awsome!!! Is there any way that could make it easer to render a complex or classic architecture? Your line drawing of buildings are so delicate,,,Please share your working process with us!!
dierat-Yes!! Exacly! but what I feel conflict right now is that I take figure drwing and anatomy in the same time and in figure drawing we have to capture all issues as soon as possible.. that make me force myself to finish line work and proportion really quickly in other kind of practice...But just like you said unless we get the right line work, we should keep the proportion issue beforehand.
so Happy to get your comments!! Really helpful!

These last life drawings are nicely measured. Small crit: the legs on the first one look just a tad small.
If you want to improve shading even more maybe take a look at the Scott Robertson DvDs for shading surfaces.
The small gestures from your previous post also look cool. Maybe take one of the quick gestures to a more finished state and post the results here step by step?

Hey there QueenWorm.
I see some great potential going on here. In your post 103(first picture) you're really pushing those core shadows, and getting some nice lightning going on - keep that going.
If I were you I'd attempt to draw slightly more fluently. I see in some of your drawings that you "interrupt" your line, rather then letting it fade out, from for instance strong to light, light->strong. This is also something that comes with a lot of experience when drawing, making you more "secure" about your own lines. A guy which is great at drawing fluently and making these smooth transitions is Mike Mattesi (definitely check out his way of drawing here: http://forceddesign.blogspot.com/)
Hope it helped

Benjaminbach-exactly! Some of my teacher point out the problem of line quality as you mentioned. And another problem is that I break light part into separate pieces when I shading.I still try to understand what exactly they are saying...And I check out your blog and website, you are so good and so young,,,I hope I could draw like you when I was at your age,,,, Feel free to left comments!

some doodle recently. My journey to CA is close to the end and that is something make me cry recently. So many good artists and great art studios are here and I can't stay longer but go back to serve in military~ s*ck...
Some art studio or school that i quite recommend are gnomon and 3kicks. I take all of my class in gnomon, but 3kicks in pasadena is really a good place to improve your skills that I just found. So if you want to pick up your traditional skills, 3Kicks is great~ For computer art or traditional clay sculpture, Gnomon and sculpting class with John Brown would be good choice. I would upload my sculpture later.
I am not working for these art studio, these are just some of my learning experience in CA. I am Not posting commercial here~

uh,,, quick practice on photo reference. Texture is so hard to depict,,,How you guys cope with this kind of complex texture like forest, woods,,,? I feel so painstaking but not natrual this time.
The color I pick were still different from the original photo.
