Hello! I'm a 20 year old art student from Portugal. I'm aiming at a career in Illustration and, well, pretty much anything that allows me to draw for a living. I've never had serious formal training in anything painting, composition, colour theory, etc - just observational drawing for three semesters (only one of which was devoted to nude models, unfortunately), so I'm mostly self-taught.
I'm a bit intimidated at all the fantastic sketchbooks around. Specially because I mostly use a mechanical pencil. Ocasionally, a black pen or some coloured pencil (or regular pencils, that happens sometimes too). I haven't painted digitally in months (and I'm ashamed to say I've never given traditional painting a serious try). And that's pretty much it.
Okay, I'm starting with a few sketches mostly done during a trip to UK - they're from last December (except for the first one, which is more recent, but I wanted that one to be my thread thumbnail for now :P). I didn't stop drawing in the mean time - it's just that these are the oldest sketches I have that I feel are worth posting (and relevant). More recent ones will follow.
In case you failed to notice, I don't know when to stop writing and start posting. Onward with the art!
(...The pole dancer made sense in the context it was made, I promise.)

OMG, I want to eat your lines, they're so yummy ! You're form is excellent and the tone's bang on.
I can't wait to see coloured stuff from you, and I think you should seriously give traditional painting a go, for countless reasons not least of all that it'd improve you're digital work tenfold. I'm guilty of a fear of painting and colour as well, but I'm trying to sink my teeth in and get the fundamentals.
Oh, and the pole strippers right leg looks like it's made of jelly or that she has rickets or something...
I'll stop blathering and go to sleep, it's nearly three in the morning here :P
Bye !

@ Loki. Thanks! The tone, really? I tend to think my stuff's a bit bland compared to some other people who manage to get some really interesting contrast. :/ But hey, I'm glad you liked it! I'm already pretty comfortable with digital painting, but yeah. I really have no excuses about not having done any traditional, except for laziness.
Here are a few more. The first two are observational studies from stock models justmeina@DA (http://justmeina.deviantart.com/) and sinned-angel-stock@DA (http://sinned-angel-stock.deviantart.com/). The last one is from a bunch of sketches I did for Christmas - this is Sionainn's (http://shonk-ness.deviantart.com/) character Boris.

Oh, wow. Replies. I feel so validated. =')
@DenaeW Thank you, and right back at you.
@Sacari Thanks!
@RedWarrior For some reason my friends tend to fall asleep a lot whenever we go to Starbucks, plus I ride the train a lot, so I've got quite a few sleeping people sketches under my belt. :P Thank you!
@GaussianRaider Thank you. :)
I'm in a rush, so I'm uploading just a few for now. They're all from imagination - first two are the only little details that I liked from a whole page of sketches. Then there's a waterfall I should really have coloured weeks ago.

You have a very good observational quality, and it translates very well into your "off your head" sketches. Keep practicing.
And I'll confess, I haven't touched traditional paint media in years. It's far more economical to use digital media. Having said that, using paint, pencil, and conte is a tactile experience that a Wacom tablet or Cintiq monitor just can't reproduce.

You're off to a great start with this sketchbook, love the linework. The one with the skullmask would make a neat illustration, he's falling backward a little but that's easily fixed right? Well, keep up the good work!

Thanks, guys! This update has a bit more colour. These were all done on the train. Colours were photoshoped.

Some more stuff. The first one is the first page of my current sketchbook... I was just going for weird that night.
In the second one I used reference from Ahrum-Stock (http://ahrum-stock.deviantart.com/) and Justmeina (http://justmeina.deviantart.com/), both at DA.
Then - original character, an observational drawing gone wild and something long.

i love your work so far, you have a great style. wish i could do realism like yours.

Argh, your work is realistic, but has some kind of edge to it.... maybe it's your mastery of value? I've got nothing on this, homes, this shit is dope!

Thanks, everyone. :)
@Matt_Volta Wow, that's... a lot in my book. Thank you very much.
@phantasy Actually, I started as an anime fan and my style used to reflect that a lot more. One of the things I struggle with the most is trying to tone down the anime influences, specially in the way I draw faces. I think I'm getting there slowly.
@Mikhail Faulken Thanks! It's probably the anime influence I mentioned above. I can't draw straight-up realism without reference, but sometimes that works in my favour. Only sometimes, though.
Alrighty, so now we get: a friend playing Halo, a slightly more cartoonish character design, something wacko (women referenced from mjranum-stock (http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/)) and the coloured version of the waterfall I posted some time ago (this ain't exactly a sketch - at least not by my standards - but since it's not that spiffy either, it goes here what the hell.) It's not very big because of the forum format, but you can check out a bigger version on my deviantart (http://kyendo.deviantart.com/art/Not-quite-awake-yet-156167344).

I love the lines you use when you draw from real life! They're so loose and... squiggly, I don't know! I especially like the sleeping girl in your very first post.

HI THERE!
As a self proclaimed fangirl of yours I MUST leave a comment here.
I should probably tell you all about how I love you lines, the movement, the overall fluidity (so much Janaschi influence, it's beautiful :3), the colours! I should probably tell you all about it but..nah, you already know :D
You should continue posting stuff here, though! I've been stalking you in the internet and stuff (shh, tell no one! except Carla, she knows already) and already saw a lot of beautiful new things, but I wouldn't oppose to seeing them here as well :)
Anyways, be my best friend? (and show me all your sketches too?) ihihi
Beijinhos!*

Cojac - thanks! Considering these are like 2 years old, I'm very flattered. :)
gravity-zero - damn, girl. This was dead and buried and you had to come and dig it up again. Now you've gone and made me feel like bringing this back. You flatter me way too much. WAAAY too much. But thank you for this. :')
But anyway. Why not? Let's try this again. I don't know how long I'll be able to keep this up, but at least now I've got enough from the past few months to keep this going for a while... If anything, it might be interesting to see the difference 2 years make. I'll be posting a bit randomly, so any one of these might have been done three months ago, or yesterday.
Onwards.

Sweet ass sketches. You've got a two year buffer of this stuff?
Kyendo
May 10th, 2012, 04:59 PM
MoKhi - thanks! Yes, between the first page of the thread and the previous post, 2 years went past and while I'm not sure my technique evolved as much as it could/should, I feel a lot more secure about it being "me".
A few more!

Weee! More pretty stuff *.*
You're welcome eheh :P I didn't actually realize so much time had passed but you should spread the pretty things you've been doing around, right?
In truth, I'm not too sure if this site is the best for it, at least I'm not crazy for it. A little bit of conceptart.org and a little bit of CGHub all in one would be cool though!
You should post things here sometimes though. A little bit of tumblr, a little bit of blogspot, a little bit of deviantart, a little bit of where you did that 'daily draw february' thing and a little bit of this is always a plus ;)
And I do not flatter you WAY too much, I flatter you just right, because I sincerely like your stuff very much :D
