Wow! A really great start! And look at all those studies!!! It also great to see so much done in traditional mediums. If I were to suggest 1 thing, it would be to do some more drawing from life. Draw your cat, arms, calculators...whatever. You can always learn something from what is around you. Ah, I'm blathering on... keep it up mate. :sungod:

Not much today (Well, yesterday), started some Vilppu and I love it, it'll help me make sense of construction I think. Need to find a good book on artistic perspective, I have one but I think it's very technical and pertaining to architechture... I think Loomis recommends one in Fun With a Pencil.

Seriously, dude, you're my latest inspiration here and I've subscribed to this thread.

I'm in the final year of GCSE's in England, and I have to say, the art education at this level is horrific. If very occasionally the teacher (Who is actually a language teacher...) teaches us something, it will be irrelevant, based on false information (She thinks that paint is additive mixing lol...) and usually involves us copying some contemporary twats style. I've been doing lots of self study, reading anything I can get my hands on (I recently found Bridgman's Complete Drawing from Life in some ratty old bookstore )
Same here. Come to think of it, years back when I took my GCSE O' Levels (ours was the Singapore version), we were taught crap.
The first few weeks or so (2 lesson per week, each lasting 2 hours), we went straight into drawing apples and oranges, and straight after that, we learned watercolor painting, all in a time span of 2 months or so. After that, we proceeded to doing craft work for the rest of the 2 years.

It's good to see you're learning this all on your own. In particular, those anatomy studies look very well done.

OMG, thank you so much ! I'm so glad that you like what I've done :D

I won't be learning on my own anymore, I've applied to MindCandyMan's on-line atelier (www.classicalartonline.com) to learn to fundamentals of seeing from life, so I'm going to supplement those studies with my own on construction and imagination so that in 2-3 years I'll be ready to go to one of the Art Department POD's. Right now I'm interested in conceptual art but I'm dubious about job security.

Ga ah, I've been such a lazy bastard the last few days, been doing a website for ICT coursework and my Young Enterprise project. But anyway, no excuses, I'm going to do at least 3 facial anatomy studies today and then some reffed drawings.

Thanks Xeon, that's got me motivated again ! I'm pumped for Jon's atelier :rocker: Although he's full so i'll be studying with his new full time instructor -.-

My parents also think that of Art in general, its quite depressing but I guess its all the reason to get up and prove them all wrong.
Pretty impressive that you've got an A* for Portraiture, I got an B altogether combined along with my 2nd year's project, different from you probably because of a different exam board, and your so right about the art education in England at GCSE level.

Thanks Exon-Ion ! We're on Edexcel and it's 97% for an A*, so it's undoubtedly the hardest subject (I generally get A*'s in everything). I'm strapped for time, have loads of corusework deadlines atm, but i'll get some stuff up after I start at MindCandyMan's Altelier, which I am psyched for !! And I'm reading Alla Prima, which is damn interesting and inspiring.

Hey man! Great anatomy studies and gestures. We're about the same age (I turned 17 a couple months ago). Sorry about your art education situation but MCM's atelier will hopefully supplement for a lot of things and give you the education you need. But you can learn just as much if not more so from teaching yourself. Don't worry so much, you have your entire life ahead of you! :)

You've got some serious determination. That's great. I see progress. Slow but sure. Keep at it but don't forget to have fun, too. Try to balance out your studies with sketches from imagination or use reference as a theme or idea only. Great way to keep things fun and also to understand how much you've absorbed from your studies.

haha weird im the same age as you at school and i do young enterprise as well lol. biggest waste of time ever.

in terms of the anatomy and stuff, your proportions and perspective have been steadily improving since page 1 so i'd focus on line quality for the moment.

Bending your arm at the elbow and shoulder to draw rather than using the wrist allows you to get much free-er (is that a word??) lines, as the line is not restricted by the reach of your wrsit. Also, don't purposefully use lots of strokes of the pen for a line when one would do.

keep it up man, i'll definitely come back here to se how you're doing!

p.s. are you in the uk? i figure you'll be thinking about art foundation soon; i'm going to all the open days this october x

@Raffix - Hey, thanks for dropping in. Yeah i'm trying to reign in my chickscratch strokes, i'm probably going to do some master copys to train that aspect.
I am in the UK, Surrey to be specific, but I'm going to college to study art, maths, physics and english literature. I'm hoping to get a good enough portfolio to go to The Art Department in 2 years time after my A Levels, but I guess it can't hurt to look into foundation. The only problem is my parents, I guess i'm going to have to have a showdown with my dad eventually :P.
I think that studying with Johnathan Hardesty might be a better alternative, so I can do that and my A Levels at the same time. I've talked to him and an hour on every schoolday is ample to progress as long as I do lots of work when I have spare time.

I love the sheer amount of studies you've done, you show an intimate knowledge of individual aspects of anatomy, like features of the face (I loved the eyes) and that of the body, now I definently know what you mean by how studies can pay off.

Woah!!! Massive dump. :O And no, you're not bad at art! Your drawing are actually quite solid, and I think it's your lack of values that's really bringing you down. The most basic thing you have to understand in order to make realistic art is that values are key. Expanding on that, to begin to paint well you absolutely need the basics that drawing well gives you. Doing a long, well thought out drawing (put those values in there!) of what you're going to paint, before you paint, will help you a lot. Also, watercolours are one of the hardest mediums to master, so if you can get your hands on some acrylics it'll probably make you life a great deal easier. :)

I see improvements and definently more emotion in your face studies. I can't think of anything to say other than I can almost FEEL the determination from here and it's inspiring.

@Pixie Trick- Yeah, I'm one of those noobs that are abit afraid of going dark. I guess I really need to push it, thanks for reminding me ! I've done some sketches for the next set of three paintings I'm doing so I'll try and push my value range on those bad boys ! Two of them are imagined, one being a figure study, one an ecorche (flayed skin showing superior muscles) of that figure study and the other the skeleton under that, so I'll have to try and really nail those values, thanks ! And I'm using oils instead of acrylic, I've always hated acrylic.
On a side note, I think when I start at Johnathan Hardesty's Atelier on the Th, the barque studies are supposed to really drive home the value concept.

@Naidy- Woo ! Thanks for the motivation :) I'll be sure to keep it up, although I am going to Switzerland for 10 days so I can't post then but I'll be sure to do some sketches (unfortunately I can't do any paintings cause there's no time ! Got fun stuff to do !) And how about asking for some line quality ?! I need to work on that.

Okay, finished moving in to the new house, here's the sketches for the 3 paintings I'm doing (not finished them yet btw). They will be A2 size on primed board in oils using a burnt umber under painting. I'll probably be able to use them as coursework for the 'Structure' section of my AS level I'm taking next year. Finally got the scanner I wanted so at least my pics are marginally less shabby ! I still need to finish putting in the spine and hips, do all the chest and hip muscles (And make the shoulders look more solid) and then get those values down ! OH yeah then I have to paint the bastards.

Hi Loki just wanted to say how impressed I am with your studies thus far. It's great to see you being so self motivated and disciplined. I can already see the improvement so stay positive and keep at those studies because it will be so worth it and lead to a great life. Studying with Jon Hardesty is very cool and I'm sure he will help take you to the next level. I will enjoy watching your progress. If you can find a local life drawing class join it as it will also be a big help.

Hey, haven't checked up on you in a while, but I really like what I see. :D Your studies, as usual, look spot on.

When you're drawing people though, I've noticed the lower halves of their faces (particularly the chin) always look a wee bit sunk in. I don't know. I have a problem with chins myself (alone with mouths, but you're fine with them)
Just keep doing studies, but it'd be great to see some that particularly focus on the lower jaw and neck, they'd definitely help you out.

No more crits other than that, just keep up the good work and update again soon. :D

A few things from the past week in my new sketchbook and a quick digital study of 'Bar at the Folies Bergeres' by Manet. Didn't scan everything because some of it was really bad. Fairly busy, should be able to increase output after next Friday (coursework deadline).

Finally found a good way to batch upload to BlogSpot, Tumblr and here. Just use the batch Google Picasa uploader on Blogspot, copy the HTML over to Tumblr, use a HTML to BBCode converter so you can post it here (You can use the replace function to change the default 320px width to anything you want). Plus the images will be linked to their larger versions and they're on Google Picasa so they won't mysteriously disappear like with Photobucket.

Good progress, lots of observational sketches (I need to do more of those). Be careful of too much pencil work, try the mass drawing every now and then.
All in all I think you have a good eye for shapes and tones.

And there's something about drawing on trains or buses, like double xp or something.

Keep up the studying, you're getting there. I'd love to see more works from your imagination, where you implement the observations you do in real life, utilizing the knowledge you have gained. This is challenging and it forces you to think more about what you're drawing and painting in real life. Observe the model/still life, analyze it, Don't just copy it. You might be able to create a pretty picture by copying, but it is far more important to gain knowledge of how we perceive life, so that you can implement that in your own work.

Roope - Thanks, I definitely agree. I need to implement my studies directly after into imagination work to get the most out of them. And heh yeah it's way to easy to zone out and just copy the visual field. I'm doing more imagined compositions now and for the next half a year for college work and my portfolio's for uni (and cos they're damned fun !).

That self portrait has a very good likeness and a big step up from the last ones for that, good show.

hard to tell if that is clouds or mountains in the background of the enviro, but biggest problem is scale. looks like the lake is 3m long and that door a letterbox at the moment - might want to bring in some common objects like trees in the back and where the guy stands, so we can see the depth difference better
