View Full Version : Toates will level up

Call me Toates. I'm a 19 year old student from New Zealand. After a year of doing literally nothing (literally) I've taken up a course in 3d animation, but my passion remains with 2d art.
I was never that good though, never practiced and only sporadically put out a picture. I've studied design and photography before and I'm seriously tempted to do some sort of arts course. But before I have a chance i reckon I'll need to be 100 times better, so with no one to really ask about how to improve i turn to my only hope, The good folks of conceptart.org! a little dramatic but there you have it

I present my sketch book, I'd really love to learn figures as I'm terrible at them if you know of any resources point me in that direction!

Sketch's will be uploaded later when i can scan, for now photoshop.

Hey these look good! You're definitely off to a good start!

I'd probably recommend trying to bring out the 3D shape in your drawings a bit more, i.e. think about the way surface curve and bend towards the camera. drawing in contour or construction lines would definitely help, and they're very important for being able to understand the shape. You got a start in 3D already anyway :)

hey thanks, I'm trying to get more form in my pictures just starting to learn how to get it.

what is 'drawing in contour or construction lines'? sorry i dont understand the lingo im basicly trying to teach myself and have no idea what that means, thanks for the help though!

start of portrait i did tonight, getting more of a feel for it, still to many lines and not enough form. I was drawing from my head rather than the refrence, i need to stop that! nose is off a cant seem to get them right.

and still trying to find a way to draw anatomy!

Edit: went back over this trying bigger brushes as you guys said, and trying to get more form into it , tell me what you think

Use big brushes to block things in, then go smaller for details. It seems as though you've been going a bit too small too quickly. I'd also recommend you make your lines long and sweeping, try not to feather them too much. Really observe your subject and where your lines are going before you put them down.

As for the construction bit, think of drawing like 3d modeling and the different polies. A 3d model is made up of many planes, right? Well that's how you construct in drawing too. It's the same concept. :)

Enydimon : Thanks, I'm finishing of this picture with a bigger brush and im finding it easyer to block things out though it might not show. sorry for my ignorance but what is feathering my lines?

I feel as though i still dont know enought to create my own characters, or at least i couldnt do it with out reference, do people use lots of ref when making a character?

anyway here is the King, i actually do feel like im improving! but i have alot of trouble at the start of the picture, should i start with lines or go strait to values?

Nice matte paintings! Can't offer much crits there, just really solid.. Also, I dig the turtle.. i'm a sucker for turtles

You were asking about conture lines and I didn't see a response so I found some examples (via Bing image search) of conture/cross conture drawing, to get the juices flowing. Get involved with the form of you drawings by feeling them out with conture lines! Don't be afraid to bust out some ink and paper, and make some mistakes. Keep up the good work :steph:

Interesting work on borders; analyzing that, should help you to make better values. Understanding the essentials of how light work with 3d Shapes is the actual work of masters.

Love your landscapes...so jealous!
You're definetly improving nicely with those portraits! They're difficult stuff.
You say you're not sure what to practise - how about just study individual features for a while? I'm not sure if i can suggest which one needs the most work, however you'll know yourself which features you have the most issues with because its usually the one that you spend the most time erasing!

Eg. I hate noses, they never look right. So I'd look at the nose from different angles, maybe a few wrinkled noses, some fat noses, skinny noses, long noses, upturned noses - you get the picture :)

Good job so far!

Thanks again for posting over at my sketchbook, i am really impressed by the matte painting you posted on your first page, that was very well done. I also really like your environments as you manage to pull of the textures really well. I think that your human paintings will look amazing once you have nailed anatomy. I noticed in your first post that you wanted links to help with anatomy and the face - here is a great site that shows you the anatomy of the face and also if you look to the right there is a list of expressions, click on them and the face will change. Its a great way to see how the face changes visually for each expression and for finding out which muscles do what. http://www.artnatomia.net/uk/artnatomyApplication.html Hope that helps, keep it up!

I really love your the sketchy painting of landscapes with striking strokes using tilted brush. I often want to catch this technique - something like Daniel Dociu use. Some of your sketches are pretty close to it.
also the Rockn' robot from May 27th, 2010, 02:26 PM got me. Even though it's not very clear what it is, it has pretty cool dynamics and expression. It's always trade-of for me how much to render clear functional contours, and how much let expression rule. There the expression rule over all, and it looks cool.

thank you for the comment on my sb!
first off, i applaud you for being able to take messy sketches and clean them up from there to render them. your environments all look really nice :D
however, though the sketchy brush/linework can really complement the enviros, it often makes your figures look a bit haphazard. too many lines/strokes in figures often confuses the gesture, especially if it makes really thick outlines like some of yours do (lol, something i'm working on). try to simplify , maybe draw a bit slower.
hope this helped a bit, good luck!

Oatestwder
July 22nd, 2010, 06:37 AM
zzyzx: I know i shouldnt use those thick lines, I'm not at all confident with figures so I think maybe I do it to mask shapes I'm not sure about? I'm trying to work on it, I do enjoy a randomness though, i just need to get it so i doesnt distort the image beyond possable human regognition.
But way off topic you are completly right cheers. How did you/are you learning figures?

deleted, LOL sorry i was a bit sleepy when i commented the other day, didn't realize that i had already posted (was only looking at p1)
and yea i tend to use thick lines like that too, unconsciously. have to force myself to stop it.
as for me, i'm just switching inbetween drawing random stuff from mind, doing studies from books and studies from pics. don't have much from life to work on (selfportraits get a little boring, lol) .i try to focus as much as possible when i study from books because i always forget anatomy.... but sometimes it feels like i'm just shooting arrows into the dark (i don't think that's the right term).

The Sceptical Saint: cheers man! but to be honest I'm still tying my laces, over and over and they still come loose! I'm not sure were that analogy was going.. But NZ REP!

getting a little annoyed with the amount of time i have to draw lately, this is all i had time for today. been a while since i did a portrait found it kind hard the proportions are way off, look at those eyes and cheek bones, doesn't really look like me either

I tried a different way of working with this, i normally block out and just start painting but decided to block and then correct it with lines until i was happy with the shape. took me way too long, i hope i get round to finishing this.

based on my last mech concept, heavily referenced from gurren lagann (I'm on a binge!)

zzyzx: cheers Z! when I'd finished it i realised it looked like his work! must be unconsciously channeling him, lol i wish. and yea i should have reflected light but lets pretend i painted those ones in a void... the next will have light!!! and yea its just mirrored haha

Brötje: cheers. yea i have a problem with black i like it because it hides alot of my work but I'm trying to get away from it

some work on my samurai robot. I never paint a subject and then a background, my subjects are normally natural progressions from the background so this was hard for me. I actually finished this picture and then my photoshop crashed :( this was my last save and its pretty close to the end, i just fleshed out some details changed composition and corrected colours. but dam that pissed me off.

back from a weeks break, just what i needed hardly touched a PC all week. Did some sketch's may scan them latter but no digis.

I have my final project for texturing this week, so not sure how much drawing I'll get done. Here's some stuff done tonight so i don't forget how to use a tablet :P
first ones are 4 minute drawings of different faces since i tend to only ever draw one face (mine)

Then a rushed environment

and finally a half hour sketch with HORRIBLE colours and lighting.

HEY i love the animation, and the robot's rendering is looking sweet. and aww that really sucks about photoshop man.
faces are looking pretty good, but for that last one - the one you painted - the forehead's too wide, kind of looks like a block on his head. a tip for finding the arch of the eyebrow (since you're using that to find the width of the forehead block?) would be to trace a diagonal line from the edge of the nostrils through the center of the eye. the arch should be where that line hits (lol i learned this from figuring out how to pluck my eyebrows a long time ago....). and if you trace a line from the edge of the nostril to the edge of the eye, where the eyebrow should end should line up with that.
does this make sense?eheh

That animation is kick-ass and I'm still trying to figure out how you get that scratchy look (like what you got in cliche mountain pass. BTW is a small, plucky, vastly outnumbered group defending said pass? Or is it one of those ominous gateway to evil-land type cliche mountain passes?)
Keep grinding, the next level can't be to far now.

not gonna be able to do personal work for a while my final production has started! so i'll put up some work on that maybe, depends how good it is.

zzyzx
September 20th, 2010, 02:29 AM
heyyyy nice scene there. i think the first box with two samurai-mech things is most interesting. but if you've decided to use the last one, i think you should put some interesting elements in the background too - maybe silhouettes of other samurai, like they're an army or something.. it seems a little strange to have a sky-scraper type background you roughed in there, maybe switch to more temple-like buildings? i've always associated samurais with older eastern culture, and skyscrapers with more western things.

Cheers Z, na I haven't chosen any of them yet. and yea I'm gonna have other samurai scattered around and destroyed hopefully. Lol they weren't supposed to be building but mountains or something, ah well that's my bad if you cant tell. In the latest draft its been changed to smoke to kind of fudge the horizon. and the smoke slowly rising and the flags waving should give the picture some movement.
Cheers for the input!

Great work with all the enviros. Keep practicing the portaits also. Do all kind of studies. Self portraits, value studies etc. You'll get there. Get a good foundation with values and after that, start with colors. When doing skin tones, use different hues for lights and shadows. If light tones are warm, then shadow tones are cold etc. Also try using smaller saturation with light values and higher with dark. Experiment.

These are looking great! The robots are awesome, and I like your use of colour in your environments. (I usually get scared of putting any detail in so I just have a plain background and fill it in at the last minute) but the brushes and colour you use combined make the background feel more alive. I especially like the waterfall piece you did a few pages back it stood out from the others. Look forward to seeing more!

hiya Oatestwdr, thanks for the kind words in my sb!

Definitely looks like u got a fun journey ahead of you and glad that u made the switch or dedicated to becoming a better 2d graphic artist! I can tell that you have a good background, whereas u mentioned in ur earlier post that u were doing photography and 3d stuff, because u have some really nice compositions going on in ur sketches! The sketches I like the best are those of the mountains, especially this one (http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=918457&d=1267426311), captured a really nice realistic mood and values (i think particularly y this works is because it's loose and has a lot more information compared to ur portraiture or figurative works)

I'd really love to learn figures as I'm terrible at them if you know of any resources point me in that direction!

my one resolve to this is go do life figure drawing, u will learn loads even if u don't finish sketches there, u will catch things of how tones transition on the body, where hard edges exist, anatomy and get an eye for proportions and so on

I'm liking the progress and see some really nice improvements in the short time, keep up the hardwork, u'll be superstar in no time!

It seems you have a better eye for environments than you do for characters- your landscapes seem to be a bit more successful. I'd suggest lots of anatomy studies studying planes and forms. Try pushing your environments, maybe do some odd shapes, form something from them, or approach it differently,I think you're not progressing as fast as you'd like because you're not pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. These enviros look the same, and it's just portraits. try some full body stuff...maybe work with pencils, study form and lighting, build up your objects, etc...

Keep working, and don't give up. Nice 3d model by the way.

That matte painting is wicked. I can't quite figure out what is the matte and what is the painting. Regarding your characters you seem to know where you are heading technically pretty well so I'll disregard that. But if I had to say something it's that for some reason they are very puppetlike.

Have them express and act a bit more and I believe you'll flush that stiffness right out.
