View Full Version : Ripples Anyone?

Hey, for my Art AS Level, Ive had to do ripples as my theme..Ive been able to produce a couple of drawings and paintings of simple things such as ripples close up- but when i want to draw lets say boats in the ocean, i cant imagine how id go about drawing the small ripples (especially in pencil)- yeah I could spend 20 hours doing it (and i know people are gonna say well do that then) but I just wondered how everyone else would go about drawing ripples/waves.
images like this for instance..
Even if i did copy these to my best, i feel that the water wouldnt look believable anyways =/
thanks people :)

try it, you might surprise yourself. For every series of ripples ask yourself, what made them? You don't see all the sources in that first one because the boat's at rest, and you've got overlapping ripples from various sources off screen. But in the second one, that boat is swelling up over waves and then slapping back down again causing that interesting series of ripples around it, and the waves themselves make their own from their natural movement. Give it a try, observe what you see as best you can and have fun with it!

Try Making the ripples part of the shadow/reflection so you don't have to render so much info, look at this Kautzky to see what I mean
