Hi guys, I just finished a uni degree majoring in illustration and graphic design. I am more interested in illustration (particularly concept art). I havn't been drawing long (a little over 2 years now) and my skills obviously arent good enough to make a career out of drawing yet.
I have decided to attack this problem head-on and have purchased myself 500 sheets of A3 paper, and have started to get cracking on drawing!!!
This thread is for me to keep track of my studies, while also, hopefully some of you talented people will offer me some critiques/advice etc.

Hi people

Got up early this morning and did some drawings.

This one is of an Australian politician Peter Garrett, with Kevin Rudd hiding behind his back.
I was going to draw press mics in front of him, but the idea came around a little late. I'd like to develop this further into a type of editorial illustration

Hello Anthony.
It is a very good thing that you discovered that you are so much interested in illustration. I see that you are determined and that you could accomplish anything that you decide right now.
Considering that you are drawing for only two years now, your advancement is humongous.
You are most probably eQuipped with a bunch of drawing tutorials and books already, so I will not molest you with the links.
As I going through your sketchbook, I can see that you are mastering very good the correct lines at pencil drawing, and I very much like how you lay the shadows down. Actually , my goal is pretty the same , to learn to put the shadows on pencil drawings like you do. On some of your sketch pages, it is visible that you have an outstanding story telling sense and a great imagination.
On a few drawings there are some anatomy problems, nothing serious, but don't we have all problems with anatomy? Anatomy is something that we all should train and improve all the time in our art careers.
The digital paintings: I am admiring your skills here, you are excelling with the perspective handling and I am not a pro, nor a very good artist, but in my humble opinion I think that you have managed the color combination to lay down pretty well. In one word, your environmental studies are amazing.
Hope you will post more and that you will improve even more here. conceptart.org is just amazing.

Hi fellas, cheers for the encouraging words.

Plissken - Cheers mate - you're right about the anatomy, and although it may not be serious issues, i really need to knock that information into my brain. You should see me try to draw a figure without a reference :) It is aweful. haha.

pauloricardo - cheers dude. Holy crap! Checked your website out. Love your batman image.

Did this today. part of a series of images im doing based on 1920s immigration to the US. I referenced an old photo of the Manhattan skyline from that era. I added a few elements including the roof tops and steam boats in the harbour.

Dudes, im having trouble with colouring my inks. anyone know of any good tutorials on selecting a colour palette for comics? I know it basically comes down to understanding of colour theory, but many comics use the oddest colours which end up looking natural. Id post my tests, but they are totally shit.

anyway, heres a test thrown together showing my work in order of sequence so far. The white boxes are for narrative text (havn't finished yet) and there will be speach bubbles too.

Over the long weekend spent some time doing figure studies as well as longer still lifes. They started off as total shite, but as i kept doing them, i gained a better understanding of implying motion and gesture (something my ppl lack). Listended to an old interview with Jim Lee and he basically said if you understand the human body and gesture, you can draw a person from any angle (almost) without a reference.

anyway studies!!!

Yeah your brother was right. This is actually looking a lot better. Really love this pieace m8, great work. But you have some small things you need to polish, the hand has a bit grey on it, there is still some brown around his hair and on some places around his jacket, also around the gun. If I'm not mistaken you've cut him out of the other picture and some brown came along too hehe. But try to take it off and this will be awesome. Something with the pipe of the gun makes it look a bit flat also, I'm sorry but you might wanna check this out. Cheers

PaintmyBrain - Cheers for the crits! Exactly what i wanted to hear. You're right about the crudeness around the gun. I sloppily used the magic wand tool to select around the character and fill in the blue background. Needs lots of touch-ups!
I'll give it a break for a day i reckon, that way i can look at it with some fresh eyes tomorrow

I love the guy with the gun, where is this character from??

My own design. Was inspired by 80's cop flicks. The head features are kinda a mix between Eddie Murphy/Michael Jackson (Off the Wall)/Sammy J. The three most badass African Americans in pop culture!
Going to be designing two more characters, one other dude and a cool chick too.

I saw your avatar and had to visit your SB. The fro brings back days of yesterday century....I had a fro about twice that size.

A suggestion on folks of color skin tone. First I think the values in the portrait are close and the planes of the face are basically working. I would add highlights to the check facing the light. The same value to lighten the cheek bone area i would use on the forehead then just above the eyebrow I would lighten the value a bit. also at the jaw line..perhaps two values lighter, just a stroke or two.

Might i suggest placing the colors you used in the face next to one another, tweak the values between and then add them to your face. The Mumsel Value System works, white on the scale being 1 and the darkest being 10...

reallly luv the fro..it also needs just a bit more dimension with added values and abstract shapes within the fro.

May 13th, 2010, 06:58 AM
Sombertwin - cheers for the crits. I havnt really done much black skin tone. Its hard, because looking at references, i notice in black peoples tones, there are a lot of different colours including more purples, reds, and greens. Gotta find the balance somewhere!

hi people, been a while since i posted here so thought id better update before i forget about it.

Hi folks, finally got around to finishing these off.
Thought i may as well post them since im done with working on them. They are minor changes from previous post, mainly just bumping out areas creating more contrast. Im pretty happy with the result, but i know i can do shit loads better if i spend more time in the planning stages, developing less stiff poses.

Paint my Brain - CHeers mate!

sketch of Johnny Ramone ive been working 'on and off' since last thursday. Forced myself to only use HB pencil

scanner is cheap and nasty, so had to digitally edit the values and contrasts in photoshop - resulting in the harsh rough look

A few sketches

This one drew from life of a building in the city. Damn, drawing outside is hard, especially when it's cold and windy!

*the drawing is the image on the 'left' :)*

seungy - cheers for the comment! Glad you can see some improvement.

It does look like labor will win. I'd imagine there will be so many fights between the parties, that we'll be back at voting booths very soon.

Perhaps I should start a new sketchbook, considering I havn't posted in over a year, but meh, this place has enough threads already!

So the last year has been a little over the place - but fantastic. I had an internship at a animation studio in my city, which was FANTASTIC. i learnt so much. And i went on to study 3d modelling and other aspects of game art at my local Tafe.
Below are my best works of the year, and hopefully, i shall continue to post here rather than neglect the many resources available by fellow artists!
