There is a really nice adventure game with steam punk in it, it's called Syberia (http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=syberia+screenshots&lr=). It's almost two years old now, so it probably won't cost much.
I would like to participate today, but i have to put the finishing touches on my thunderdome entry.:(

A few coments on my favourite pictures of this DSG so far:
Hagac: I like the idea and the colored version even if I think its way too dark!
OLSEN: The charakter is good, but the way he holds the weapons seems odd to me. The same goes for the weapons itself, they look somehow strange to me, but that may be my personal opinion only.
brawkstake: I like the idea and the composition in your picture.

as i understand it, steampunk isnt about cybercowboys is it? There have to be big pipes, lot of iron, that stuff.
as young paddy. that looks steamy :)

February 9th, 2004, 02:59 PM
Steampunk would be stuff like the movie Wild Wild West, or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You dont know what time period it is exactly, it could be the future, it could be the past. But the main characteristic of steam punk is the use of iron and steam to create things that we know of now. So you would have a steam powered iron bazooka, or a giant steam powered mech or whatever. Its usually a dark, gritty, soot filled environment. Gears, rivets, bolts, etc are all styling cues that can help it feel more "steampunk"

OLSEN - I really like this. Not too hot on the guns, but I love the detail and suggestion on the back and the cross.
Johannes - I like the figure... particularly the boots and guns. The engine at the back has a nice front to it too.
jeroentje - Very nice. The eyes and the colours man!
Hermchen - I would like to see this worked on more. It looks like it's got style, but not fully realised yet.
josephrey - Haha... Nice idea. The hands look great.
kaptah - Tall, slender & gritty. Me likes.
Hush - Nice clean style. I love the way the character has to cross his arms to draw his 6 shooters. Nice touch.
Hazzard - Looks more like a pirate to me... which is cool. Not a fan of the colours, but the gun remix is great.
brawkstake - Nice idea. The colour and shading style really gives it a hot, parched, shimmering effect.
Oregano - Yeah I'd change the hat too (and maybe the colour of the eyes), but the rest is very nice. I love the composition.
Kartoffel - Nice character. The jacket needs something for me, but I like the rest... particularly the bowler hat.
young paddy1 - Nasty. The steam guages are stompin'!
Cybot Floor - I really love the head of the steed... the wind up starter and bulbs. Also the shape.
Idiot - Sweet. the silhouette in the background looks great. Nice design.
Bretton - There's so much to like about this. The pose, the details, the face, the style. My fav' so far. Pleeeaaase add [more] colour.
Hunger - I don't think it is one of your best, but it's still fantastic.

some comments on my favorites:
hagac: nice, love the three arms and many guns, great mechanics.
olsen: you have a really great style and i am fond of everything you do. this one is great. I think what people have a problem with for the guns is the bottom one looks a little strange... but i love the design.
johannes: i love that cowboys transportation
kaptah: wicked looking guns, i wish i could make out the other details. sorry bout losing your painting :[ wish i couldve seen it.
hush: nice clean style. love the weapon and green lighting
oregano: great movement
idiot: it's kind of blurry but that steampunk silhouette looks pretty sweet.
gumdrop: i think it worked out great actually love the design. thanks for the comment :]
hunger_artist: i have long been jealous of your style. your art is always so beautiful and attractive, keep it up.
vely bad man: yes. but that horse looks awesome, i think some longer legs are in order however.. but my judgement may be negligible because i am just fond of long legs..

omg Vely Bad Man is ure screenname relly "Vely Badass Man"?? that (along with everything u post) rocks so hard. How long did it take? what program/medium did you use? i cant help it i gotta ask. I had drawn up a pretty similar concept to yours this morning (BEFORE I saw yours) during my lunch break... i'll post it up when I get home to my scanner and tablet...
idiot - thats an awesome idea! love the moody backlighting...
Hunger Artist - I went with the cowgirl idea too... hehe ures looks a bit more secksay than mine, though :)
Hush - that is too pimp. Awesome lines.
Gumdrop, Oregano, Olsen - my ego is non-existent becuz of u guys' daily "sketches" :falls over in shame: hehe

With PS do you draw on paper first and then scan the picture or do you work from scratch on the computer??
My picture is sooooo crap:(
OLSEN
February 9th, 2004, 05:32 PM
@Mr Man: You can do it both ways. Theres a lot of great artists here that work from scanned lineart, but working from scratch is, i suppose, more common. I believe painter is the program of choise for most people here too, not PS. (i use painter, and in my oppinion it is better suited for painting then PS.)
btw, donīt be so hard on your own art. Confidence is key to improvement. :)

My picture is sooooo crap:(
with PS you can for example rotate the canvas, so nobody has to rotate his head to look at the pic....
there are many different ways to work with PS - some here do it all by hand, then scan and make a bit postproduction, like adjusting contrasts, erasing and so on.
others (like me) sketch by hand just very rough, scan and then colorate and finish the pic in PS (or Painter).
From there, it is a very tiny step to do it completly digital. But for that, you`ll need a tablet, for sketching with a mouse isnt very intuitive.
so PS isnt "cheating". even the pros like Feng Zhu do a lot of their work on the computer.
@your pic: I dont get, whats happening? theres some guy in front of a smokepipe - and a (cyborg?)skull - and an arm with a cigaret... but i dont understand, whats its about.
i hope, that helps you in your confusion

One of the few things I remember from a history course, is that the guns were worn with the handle pointing out, so they draw the left gun with the right hand, and vice versa. It's called "plainsman style". I think it looks a lot cooler than drawing from the hip.

farmer - that is beautiful man! looks like a 3D render...
moops - that concept is awesome! I like how you drew the hands (spiderish) and the way the feet disappear into the background/fog. adds a nice mysterious effect.
iotrez - the colors are (as usual) very nice. He looks kinda like one of the 7 dwarves though!
gk smith - now THATS steampunk! LOVE the hat!! lol
kay, here's mine. THanks to the tips you all gave me yesterday! I took your advice and went from a pen/ink sketch and started coloring usnig blotches of color... relly helped a ton!
I dont see enough hot chicks on the DSG so I had to draw one! I know the horizon is not right, but that's the best stock photo I could find and I didnt feel like looking any longer... :D

I started posting last week (intermittently) and I have to say it's very reassuring to see such enthusiasm for drawing and painting. What a great site.
Bretton: You're right about the legs. It looks like a steampunk donkey now that I look at it again;) Love your drawing. You've got a nice style.
Dahsramu: thanks so much for the compliments. I'm not worthy. I work all digitally in Photoshop 7. I'm guessing it took from 1.5 to 2 hours (I was working on it in between doing something else... multitasking eh? ha ha). P.S. Your sexy cowboy made me wish I drew a woman instead. Vely nice work.

Some amazing concepts today guys!
Here my honorable mentions:
Hagac - Love the "Pimp-bot 5000".
Olsen - Awesome, especially since you had time to do more. Love the lighting.
Hush - That's cool. Reminds me of Cable from Marvel Comics.
Bretton - I love tall and lanky characters. It looks like the bonkers from Yellow Submarine cartoon.
Gumdrop - Didn't work out? Come on man! I think that's badass! Love the arm.
Vely Bad Man - If the horse gets hot enough, it would cook your balls! The metal looks very good as does the rider. I agree with Bretton though, horse needs longer legs.
Farmer - Looking good. I like the backlighting.
Dahsramu - Sexy. And the horse/cycle is nice. I love the rusted metal on the horse. Where do you work? I looked at jobs in N. VA before, and didn't find alot of variety... just wondering.
Sabre - Great smirk on the bot's face. I love this lighting/style.
Til tomorrow...

Hey guys.
I've been haunting the whole site for a long time, and finally have enough courage to post some of my stuff. It's nothing in comparison to the great work seen here, but at least it's coming out of me. I'm looking to improve, even if it's in the slightest. I've also got to incorporate some colouring into my work, but I've yet to get decent with Photoshop in those regards. Anyway, you guys are doing a bang-up job and I hope to see it continue. I'll take all the remarks I can get.
I feel I might of been too hasty in trying to complete it. I will spend more time on it.
There should also be some support in the back, but I neglected to draw them. Obviously, like all work, it's in progress.

I seem to have used the same colors as many of you. I had fun trying to do it with only a few colors. Not the normal way i paint. After I finished I saw SABRES's pic and that was the exact style I had imagined it mine. Great economy of painting. I just keep scribbling...
Good stuff guys!
HungerArtist - I don't normaly go for your style, but that one I like!

2 hours in PS. I used this for reference:

When I started this I felt uninspired, but I ended up really liking it because I've never drawn metal with my pad before. It's unfinished - I was going to add bolts, seams & rust - but I'm really tired.
Everyone really ran off with this one...

Ugh, sorry I'm a bit late on this one. Didn't get started until late but figured I might as well post anyways since I did do the drawing and all. It's a bit hurried since I was trying to get in on time, but it still gets the point across I hope. :)
