gasmask encouraged me to get outa the sketching section and post somethin' in the Finally-Finished section.

I rarely venture over here 'cause all I do is sketches, but here's sompin' I did today.

it is great fun to work all traditional on CANSON paper, I feel like an old-timey designer ... like back in the day.

:chug:

It's an early design for the 'thopters in DUNE .. something I can pitch to my professors for my Senior Project ... Needs refinin', but it was fun to do.

looks sweet mate. are you going to do designs for the other Dune vehicles as well?

i'll admit the insect-like orni designs from the old Cryo game still sticks with me, but i like your take on it too. plus it's well done technically :)

all the best.

Looks really good. My only crit is the shadow at the back of the ship is too much. the ground shadow i mean. Some areas can't be shadow there. Otherwise it's a superb design. Keep it up.

Well, the only problem I have with it are conceptual so here they are (I assume this is an ornithopter btw):

The wings look too stiff to beat properly, and it looks too big overall. If you read dune you will see in the first chapters that they are so small that a few people will overload them. This is a wee bit large for that.

If you weren't talking about the ornithopters then you hit it spot on except for the wings being very stiff.

Oh btw, I want your super concepting powers.:D

Man, thats insane. I could never do all of that and keep it in perspective.

I could see this being a better design for one of the carryall lifters that is responsible for getting an extractor out of the ground as a worm approaches; much too heavy and large for a 'thopter. I like your shapes and interactions, but at the same time, it may be too complex. The sand gets everywhere on Arrakis, and the seals, plating, etc would be minimal to keep as much out as possible... still, this is a nice piece of work, but not sure it fits on Arrakis.

AH... this does remind me of the desciption of one of the Emperor's/Sardaukar vessels... I think somehow this defintiely belongs in the Dune universe.

If you get an okay to continue on these, please keep posting them here!

That is definitely a really sweet vehicle, Im not a big Dune fan but I really like this peice!!! the shadow and the nice scale by adding the people are great touches. Whatever school you are going to I wish I had gone there instead of where I am at. Im a big fan of your work in general too, you are VERY talented, keep it up!!

I don't suppose you could tell me how you got the shading near the top of the page that goes accross the peice but not on the ship? It looks almost like you masked off the ship and used an airbrush.

Thank you everyone! :D

I was very hesitant to post it 'cause I know how sensetive people are about their DUNE. I'm reading it for the first time, and it's interesting 'cause I've never seen any interpretation of DUNE ('cept the movie when I was a child, and I don't remember anything) .... So all the designs are commin' off straight outa my head.
I go thru the book and highlight the descriptions (for which there are few) .. and sorta design based off those ...

But like I said this is an early sketch of the 'thopter ... expect like 20 more before I land my final design of it.

Thanx for all the great input too guys, I will be commin' back to you all for more help :chug:

P.S. - If i do land this as my senior project, then I will be working with a friend of mine over in the Fashion Departement to visualize the whole universe - costumes to vehicles to environ to etc.

Thanx again guys, sorry I forgot to put down the process..

hopefully soon I'd like to post a CANSON/Design paper sketch-tutorial...

Basically CANSON paper is quality construction paper, but it's great 'cause you can select a base color to work from. I used a lite marker to block in the basic froms/perspectives. From there I use a white color pencil to establish the beveled corners that light will reflect from. Ink the bastard. Then marker, with canson you have a lot of values already established so a 30% and 60% marker is all it takes to lay down some shadows. Use some white-out to pop those highlights out, then scann. The spray background is on the computer and so is the orangy parts layed down over the image with a low low oppasity.
