I used to do my own printing but I'm going to need an alternative solution soon.

While I haven't tested this, I've been looking into giclee (fine art quality) prints.

I've had something printed at kinkos before and asked for their best printer - the image was dark, pixely and had awful gradients.

You should NEVER print your art at Kinkos. Not only is it a rip-off that they charge you for computer use, but the colors profiles don't match whatsoever. Can't recommend any printing place, but look around online, cause Kinkos is just plain awful.

Kinkos is TERRIBLE place to print anything other than a word document. :( I've tried a few different ones in Florida throughout the years for printing while at Ringling and I've always left with laughably horrible prints, a headache from clueless customer service, and out way more money than it was all worth.

The BEST prints I ever got (for my senior portfolio) were at home with a nice EPSON photo printer. I got the printer (including ink) for $80. It's a rip off too though, because if you run out of ONE color you CAN'T print anything; not even grayscale; and the ink is damn expensive ($20 a pop; with the printer needing 7 cartridges). That's how they get you. :( But it was great for one round...

So...I don't know any good alternatives. :( Are you at an art school? Can you ask where other people are printing theirs?

I'd find a local print shop and go there in person and make sure you find out everything about their method. Ask them lots of questions, if they can't answer all of them then I would find another place.
Obviously this means I can't really recommend a place where you live, but printing is the sort of thing where a little bit of your time and effort goes a long way.

Giclee is definitely the way to go for quality. I've been using a local printer to do giclee prints for a couple years now and I've never been happier with it. They are more expensive, though. But quality doesn't come cheap...which is why Kinkos/Staples sucks.
