YO.

My name is Vicki and I'm an energetic 22 year old. I'm a recent college grad from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a passion for Illustration and Concept Design.

I love drawing, I love painting, I love making pictures that tell stories, and I'm here to become a better artist.

Any critiques would rock on work I post here or general advice! <3

This is a good start. I've been switching between your painting and the original. You have picked up on the colours very well. However I think the most striking thing to me was the subtle depth in Morgan Weistling's piece, it made yours when looking back at seem a little flat. Little things such as the reflected light under her nose really sell the three-dimensionality. I'm probably over analysing but I hope to see some more of your work soon. I've been looking for artists to study from myself...Weistling looks tasty, thanks for indirectly introducing me to him

Cameronator- Thank you, I will try!

Gisaiagami- Thanks :D!

Traveler- Lol thanks, it's hard to make time for this stuff y'know?

Pixie Trick- Thanks so much :)

Callumbo- No, Thank you! I appreciate the nitpicking :0 It makes me realize mistakes. I tend to loose my value and make everything look flat when I paint digitally, I'm glad you pointed it out :0! And hell yeah, isn't he an amazing painter?

Update time :D! These are mostly the past 2 weeks and such. I absolutely love figure drawing, so soooo much ;0; Once a week isn't enough!!!

Great start! Excellent figure drawings...What medium do you use on those?

viki oh
March 5th, 2010, 10:17 PM
RickyRubyo- Thank you! I can't wait to make more 8D

Peetaer- Thanks man :) For 1 min. poses it varies D: when I first started figure drawing a few years ago I used only charcoal and pencil. But they got too messy and my hand smudged all my drawings XD; So I started experimenting with derwent inktense pencils and prismacolor VERITHIN. They work like pencil, but don't smudge, and the inktense are water soluble! They are fantastic. And for those 2 sessions I also used graphite sticks... They are amazing for quick gesture.

Sooo small update. I made another Weistling master copy. And an apple with dramatic lighting. Tried to use different textures here. I'm definitely gonna try more dramatic lighting studies. They are so much fun. And work on that value! The compositions are central :(

Yo so a small update of some acrylic paintings from the semester that just ended a few weeks ago. I took an intense painting for illustrators class. They where done during in class sessions of about 3 1/2- 4 hours.... I like painting a lot, it's so relaxing.

So an update with some stuff I've been doing this week.

I wish I could focus fully on improvement this summer, I'm trying my best to be productive with summer classes and work :)

Photoshop kinda killed itself and I lost all my brushes I've collected/made over the past 2 years... and I was genius enough to not save most of the ABR files -_- So I've been working with what I got xD atm/ tried to make some new brushes

Feel free to critique, I REALLY need it.

Sargent master study, don't remember the name..

Self portrait! Attempted with dramatic lighting
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii261/doshiyarove/self_portrait.png

And I revamped some old o.c.s from 7 years ago... yay

I don't think I have any room to talk, but the Sargent painting seems to be lacking a little depth or unity...? I think it's the broken color shapes and rough brushstrokes, but what can you do? silly default brushes. :)

Excellent sketchbook! I love the way your colors work together - esp. the Weistling master copy! Brilliant stuff.

Clean3d: Thanks, I agree with the depth and unity D: I think it's cause I need more perspective stuff/ color practice, it's so different from traditional paints x_x

Vertical: Thank you Vertical <3!

Update time again! So I've never tried speedpainting or making enviro stuff digitally..... or ever :x and I figure it's time, so I tried to paint the scene outside my bedroom window once in the past 3 days. The first time I was afraid to make the house so I skipped it XDDD (If my perspective teacher I had 2 years ago saw those, he's probably wonder if I even paid attention in class Dx ) Don't be afraid to critique :'D !

viki oh
August 16th, 2010, 08:43 PM
Eric-Anthony- thanks dude XD haha

Dominode- Oh gawd, I've never really thought about my process XD... well it's basically a lot of repeated practice. I have a good understanding, which makes my lines confident, cause I know where to put them without thinking to much, i try to break things down as much as possible and think of the simplest way to put it on paper using the least amount of lines I can. I've been learning figure drawing in college, drawing lots of figures has helped, and learning the basics, like form, proportion, and gesture, also studying the skeleton, muscles, and underlying structures etc. so when it comes time to making a mark, you know where it goes. I also started out figure drawing really big with charcoal and eventually tightened up and downsized to something I'm comfortable with. Hope this helps :x <3 Also, this teacher who helped me a lot in college, had me promise her I'd "never make a dead drawing" , so by being confident in strokes I can gain the looseness I want? @_@; hope that also helps/makes sense?

Sin eater- Thank you very much, I try to not go over 2-3 hours with the masters studies. They would go faster, but it takes me forever to match up the color.

snootchy- awe thanks ^_^

Gislebertus- haha yesh they do have that punkish style XD Thank you very much :> impressionism is awesomeee!

thinairart- Yeah he's awesome, I'm not done with him, I plan to make a few more. Thank you!!

EmiAlvarez- thanks :> I'm trying!

I'm very nervous right now, I'm going back to school for my senior year in college on monday. I don't know what to expect out of this semester, time flies by so quickly :(

I made some oils paintings for the first time in 2 years, I've missed this medium so very very much. Sometimes I wish it wasn't so smelly/toxic, ahaha and maybe I'd use it more..... The first one is self portrait, second is a random profile from imagination, tried to see how far I could push it/play with color/ which results in me using every color possible XD

a la bapsi- lololol thank you
Alfy- Thank you ^^ working with color is a lot of fun, it's a good way to express yourself !
scottmcd- Thank you as well! And thanks for the suggestion, adding a background would def. help me get out of my comfort zone, i tend to forget things like chairs and seats exist when I draw the figure XD I have selective sight I guess lolol

So this is like the past 2 weeks homework for my digital painting class. My teacher wants super realism, and I'm intimidated. Here's progress so far. Going to add texture brushes soon :>

I hate making editorial illustrations, I will never be an editorial illustrator no matter how hard I try XD.... I have respect and admiration for people who can pull it off. My illustration program is so focused on it this year, my brain explodes for every project. Thankfully I have degree project and digital painting to keep me sane.

I'm eating an apple. It tastes pretty good. For the first time today, I tried figure drawing with photoshop, from life. Not photo, which was interesting. It was very difficult at first, and progressively got a little easier. There's only like a few figure drawing sessions left unfortunately... I hope I can practice with photoshop for the rest of the weeks to come :)

I also used corel for the first time to paint an apple, for my homework for digital, it was... interesting. I'm not used to it, it will take much practice in that program... But I love how it blends... It's a nice refreshing challenge! I do not enjoy impasto oils XD....

Any critiques and advice would rock :)

dominode, thank you for the kind words ;0;!!!! <3 It made me smile :)

This is my digital painting class final. Our teacher wanted us to make a painting based on something your interested in doing. So I tried to make my first legit enviro painting O_o It's supposed to be icebergs and glaciers and cold stuffffff, I need to practice color moreee.

A crit on this is MOST welcome, any advice to push this further would rock.

The enviro looks great! I definitely like the first one the best, the blue hue obviously makes it look colder! haha. If I can critique in any way (dont have much room too ha), I would say there seems to be more contrast in the backdrop than in the front (where the person is), I would sharpen the contrast up front and leave the background alone...think that might add some depth! Well, I like the SB, keep it up!

So my semester is ALMOST over, ( i just have to write 2 essays) and then I have 1 semester and I graduate may 2011, and then take a year off and decide if I want to migrate to california for my masters :x

So these traditional paintings here, are my degree project that i've been working on since like January 2010. A lot of my finals have changed and I've had multiple topics of research for the class.

The topic I chose at the beginning of this semester and stuck with, was "the deadly female" I basically tried to create monsters out of females, and make big paintings... the average size of these paintings are 50" by 32" It was really fun, and I learned a lot. But I don't think I'm going to ever do traditional painting finishes again... I like digital, and I want to fully stick with it from now on, and through my portfolio class next semester. We'll see what happens, I change my mind sporadically.

It's been a while since the last update, oops D:

School has been kicking my but in this final semester while working on my portfolio @_@; im wiped out x10. But, I've been trying to train myself to 'think' like a concept artist and.... make art like one? Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to make concept art without the concept, it's a lot harder than I thought. Just gotta keep trying and practicing!

these are looking great! the characters are both very individual, but there seems to be a common link between them - it's easy to see they belong to the same universe/ story. :) also, this (http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1209969&stc=1&d=1302647226) is looking very intriguing; can't wait to see where it goes... and i'm always envious of guys who can do creature design that well. ^ x) i love how you've managed to keep them so saturated and colourful, but they still have that disturbing, scary quality.
yeah, so i basically love eeeverything in that last post. :D

So I'm tackling an environment now! A cave, and like I don't know how to make it dark without using brown, and im pissed off cause it will print out black. I'm trying to add other light sources so there's reflected light and warm/cool contrast. so frustrating!

FINALLLYYYY one of my portfolio pages is done @_@ I think before this final design, i did 6 different layouts. This took too long.

I KINDA get the feeling a crammed a lot into a tiny space, what do you guys think, then again this is being displayed as 11" by 17" on paper.

Made a step out of my comfort zone! A quick painting of boston, from outside my studio window at my college :) it was from a photo i took a while back, but still... i miss it already!

Trying to learn perspective and incorporate more architecture. I feel the more i practice painting landscapes and buildings the more comfortable i'll become with it so i can then bend it and start using my own imagination.

Also I'm trying to vary my color usage, and that's what i focused on here too, making the sky saturated and the buildings more muted.

chrylkk- Thanks so much bud! lol, I can be pretty intense, but I'm mostly happy :)

So did 3 quick 30 min studies today. And I tried to render out my figure practice which took a few hours

1. brush experiment 2. sargent study 3. banana 4. virtual pose figure practice

i love how your style is really developing lately! :D those brush experiments look really lively and fluid too, i like how you've carried them across to the figure painting. Gorgeous colors and figures as ever :) this (http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1237293&stc=1&d=1306069877) really caught my eye too. beautiful. more please! :D

Hey there! What a inspirational sketchbook! So much life and motion. And I love how it seems like you're really enjoying your studies, the only way to go!
Oh and that virtual pose thing seems interesting, do you buy it or how does it work?
Peace

skMOP- haha thanks so much :)!
Jessibelle- ;0; yay, so happy to hear you see that!! <3 thank you jessi!
Vloth- yes! I am having a blast with the studies >: ) VIRTUAL POSE IS AMAZING, however, I wish it had more foreshortening, BUT it's really good if real life models are not available! I bought the books through amazon with the cd's included and saved the files, and resold them XD

So I'm trying new things, like painting metallic and reflective objects, which takes forever, but im learning so much. And I was looking through some sketchbooks on here, and some people are painting mma fighters/boxers and I got all excited and had to try it myself, it's awesome male anatomy practice and good dramatic lighting practice!

1. mma/male anatomy practice 2. spoon 3. metallic wrapper

Today was an adventure. I got really bored while waiting for my car to get fixed... So I tried drawing cars in perspective around the dealership because I still draw cars literally like a 2 year old with their first crayon, from memory... These are all toyota's. I feel better now as I start to draw new things, I realize all the things I was afraid to draw really aren't that scary :)

Any advice on drawing cars, or perspective in general would be much appreciated!

Lovely sketchbook!, as for drawing cars I would try to think of them as basic shapes you know like a box for the car body cylinders for the wheels!.

I like the cartoonish stylization of some of your works. I also liked the waterfall/ spring studies that are in the upper part of this page. One thing I noticed, you can be more precise in laying lines and tones. Think zen - the right move in the right place in the right time :D. Sounds funny, but I really think it. I know I'm still not doing it too.

I think you overdid the bounced light on both the banana and the windowpane, giving them a little bit too much reflectivity.

Sickbrush- Dude, your thread, is totally 5-star material XD! Thanks!

I work 2 retail jobs now, and my motivation has slowed down a little, but I'm slowly adapting to my new schedules, trying to fit art into it, I feel like my art is starting to get a 'deader' less gestural consistency... I need to fix that within the next month, I really want to progress and not backtrack >:0!

But I'am happy. For the first time in like 7 months, I picked up a paint brush and used an opaque painting medium o_o I REALLLLYYYYY like acryla gouache... It's so amazing! I'm going to start forcing myself to make traditional still lives everyday now. I'm not going back to college in the fall... So I need to keep this motivation/drive going >:0000!!!

I have not posted in 2 months :( a lot of shit has gone down since then. I got into a bad car accident on my way for job training, a lot of things went down hill after that. I also got incredibly sick shortly after that. My lovely 27 inch imac decided it hates life, so the harddrive broke. I got it fixed mid september, and 2 weeks later it decided to break again...... (never use a wobbly table ever with a 27in imac. EVER)

So im stuck here using my 6 yr old laptop that crashes every time i open photoshop xD while my baby is fixed, I ordered a wall mount so my harddrive wont break anymore. My mac should be grateful i love it no matter how many times it dies xD

But i have made a lot of art! Mostly sketches, which i will share once my imac is back :) I have started to consistently oil paint again, which makes me happy. And Im going over old portfolio pieces and fixing them still taking my time, which is good, I like going at my own pace.

not focusing on technicalities like perspective with this one xD focusing more on mood and color. this is almost done, i’m just gonna add a few more elements and adjust some colors.

Oh wow, your art is inspiring me...are you living in the outskirts of Boston??? Those enviroment paintings from earlier remind me of somewhere...maybe just the area as I am here too!

We are lucky enough to have fall coming around now...hope to see some great stuff with the gorgeous New England fall foliage coming about...hopefully I can get down with digital enough to get some decent paintings coming around this time....

Keep at the updating!

spitboi7- omg! I'm not going to say exactly where, but yes more or less I live in boston :) Fall foliage is magical! I have been taking lots of pictures! Are you going to art school in Boston? I just graduated from Massart!

Yay, so my computer issues are fixed. I am happy. and I can finally start producing again *u*!!!

A crit is welcome on my painting :)! Im focusing on pushing color/atmosphere and mood! And still trying to keep it loose, but clear :) I think if i tone down the cave, to the value of the trees, it will look a lot further back in space!

Also the heads underneath are a fun exercise! I took an old OC and tried to draw him 10 different ways :) I'm getting frustrated because my stuff looks anime-ish from my head, so I'm practicing drawing portraits so I can develop my own style :)

Okay so Illuxcon was absolutely amazing, there was a million talented artists that made beautiful magic happen on their canvases. I got some very interesting and helpful feedback from artist's about my work too, most thought I should become more realistic, some thought I should become more cartoony, and I agree with both opinions xD.... and I've decided that I'm going to somehow develop 2 different styles xD; or merge both and make a megastyle.

Working on a self portrait trying a new technique. I like my brush strokes with acrylic, but can’t get that with oil. So I decided to try a value under painting, and I’m then going to overlay and glaze color with oil. Apparently it works, so we will find out xD;;

Sickbrush- Thanks man, you rock too!
JaninaG- Hey thanks for dropping by haha, glad you like my stuff ;u;

Here's some fun pencil drawings. I feel like I haven't drawn in my sketchbook in a long time. But I decided that I need to start tackling male anatomy. I like to be able to make things up from my head sometimes without reference. I've never have an issue with females but males I always draw a blank. I never used to like pose maniacs, but it was a great starting point for gestures and getting a feel for the male form, and they added a lot of nice and new poses so I was having fun drawing them :) And because live models aren't available to me I stole my brothers friend and made him pose for me xD And then I drew my skeleton, Stan. The end.

Great stuff... donno how I haven't wandered in here before!
I really like the body type exploration that you've done- and the buck-toothed kid in 57-58. I have a thing for jacked-up smiles for some reason. Maybe it's because so many cartoons have the simple white band. I really like noses too- maybe for the same reason.... too many little triangles where the nose should go...
Anyways- fun SB so far - Your fine arts stuff is good too- but I'm always drawn to cartooning. :)
Happy sketching.

Rhubix- Awe thanks man for dropping by :) Teeth are amazingly fun to draw, as well as noses, you can get so much character out of those alone xD Glad you like my stuff!

I took a really pretty character of mine and decided to age them, and make them really ugly. I want to do it to everyone now.

I also found a new brush in my library that I didn't know was there. It's kinda like the digital version of my woodless graphite pencil, I love it!

Been working on this on and off the past couple of days. I took my badass character with the eye patch and hawk and conceptualized her portrait without her eyepatch/hat/armor/clothing for my own understanding.

The goal here was not perfection or photo realism, BUT painting enough information so that the character felt 'believable' :)

1. I did a study of someone's work I admire; ekwn on DA http://ewkn.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4oyj98
2. Photostudy of awesome clouds from a picture I took.
3. This is a very strange image, but I like it. I tried a new painting technique!

^ That is seriously amazing. I think you really succeeded in creating a believable character. In spending so much time obsessed with anime and comic books, I personally love to see a dramatic character like this (scars, attitude, etc) who still comes across looking like a real person as opposed to the bland templates of "bad ass" that are so common in the aforementioned mediums.

I was going to say that I'm envious of your lines, and then I realized I was envious of your colors as well. And the accuracy of your studies. And your style. So let's just say I envy your talent. The sketchbook is looking great and I'll be back to check on it as it updates because this is seriously motivating me to draw more :)

How do you keep your lines so clean in your studies? Is it really just single strokes? I have to paint in my lines and it's something I am trying desperately to overcome. Any tips for a beginner?

viki oh
March 20th, 2012, 09:03 PM
Lyraina- Thanks for visiting :D That's so awesome you like my designs I always think they're bland or something :3

bouroune- whoawow thanks so much for the compliments I'm glad there's improvement ;0; i'm trying very hard and it's so nice to hear specially about my brushstrokes!!!

Alex Eh- yessir I certainly will! thanks for dropping by :3

Art Minded- ahhhhhhomg I'm glad you like her xD!!!! She is very fun to
imagine... woot glad that I motivated you and you like my stuff, that's awesome!!!!!! And for advice/tips bud; It's mostly all single confident strokes, just have absolutely no fear when your laying down the strokes that define that one side/plane/surface with that ONE stroke!!!! I personally am a sucker for dramatic lighting and high contrast images/scenarios, because you can see so many crisp and defined forms instead of it all mudding together. It makes it's easier to see what makes for color/value and contrast. Definitely do some dramatic lighting studies and that will help with the confident stroke part in painting a lot :) Also brushes that make crisp edges and then fade a little when you let up on pressure on your stylus.

This is W.I.P. not done!!! I'm trying to update EVERYDAY. so I stay motivated and make stuff instead of once a month, so sorry if I don't have a million studies to show everyday. Studies from last night. Alex Eh- hey man nice to see you again, I'm trying my best, thanks for all the support!

My schedule has been out of whack lately and I've had to put off digital painting and art for a bit. I started up again. But XENOBLADE CHRONICLES came out on friday, it's absolutely phenomenal. I've clocked in 15 hours between yesterday and today. PLAY IT!!!

So this is some old work from my early years in college, when I wielded watercolor like a champ. The project was called "One Fine Day..." and the goal was to tell a story in 6-8 panels without text.

I've been slowly breaking this down into concept art since Jan 2011 for my portfolio. I adore it so much, I've redone that digital painting 3 different times.
