Hello everyone,

I recently posted the following on the Sheridan thread:

"I've been in a sort of lull the last few years. Working to, well, live mostly. I went to NBCC Miramichi right out of HS back in 02 and finished fundamentals and year 1 of animation. Animation wound up not being my thing and I just worked a regular job and continued to work on my own stuff. The last few year and a bit I've really cracked down and improved a lot. However, I find myself with no networks, a wobbly portfolio and basically no contacts at all.

I have been considering trying to go back to school next fall semester but definately not for animation. Sheridan has always appealed to me but since I live in NB I have been extremely hesitant to go due to money (RL debt, student loans and bills add up) but I am thinking of getting another Student loan and taking the plunge. Which brings me to the advice I seek... I am considering taking sheridans fundamental course. I WANT in the Illustration course but my traditional painting is my WEAKEST point. MY digital painting is alright and improving but put me in front of a canvas and I am lost.

Any suggestions from people who may have been there? I am 25 and I feel so old to be considering this but I can't picture myself doing anything BUT art. IF anyone wants an indication of my skill level I have a few pieces on rawb.cgsociety.org."

The reason I am creating this thread now is mostly for help on researching other schools. I have been scowering the web in attempts to find other good schools in Canada without a whole lot of luck. Is there any other good art schools in Canada with a strong illustration course? There seems to be a large number of animation courses but as stated animation is not in my field of interest. So for all of you out there who have gone to art schools outside of Sheridan do you have any recommendations?

I have done some research on ocad and nscad, both of which are somewhat appealing. Fine arts IS appealing but not exactly what I am going for. I DO want to be an illustratior, concept artist or work in the digital art medium. I am not adversed to learning traditional art but I don't plan to try to make a living off of freelance oil paintings.

Sorry for the wall of text - any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks again,
Rob

I'm finding that both traditional painting and digital go hand in hand. The stuff you learn from the traditional is applied to whatever you do with a tablet, the difference is how they are applied respectively. Drying time, and immutability (In acrylics, not quite with oils) are probably going to kill you, but you will then have a world of skills that come with working traditionally.

Illustration is done with a variety of mediums. Digital being one of the forefront nowadays.

I live in BC so I can't really give you any advice on Ontario/NB/QB(EWW) schooling though

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE FOR EDUCATION!
