Hagac, that's pretty sweet. Sounds like a cool topic today, might try it if I got some time when I wake up. I always imagined gargoyles flying around like in that cartoon tho, heh. But that's just me.

i got your point, but what does that mean?
hagac, turn off that self-pity. what do you want, your pic is fine.
edit: gave those gargoyles more details. in the first version there were only silhouettes...

The gargoyles from The Wizard of Oz... particularly the flight scene. :)
Looks better close up. Are you going to add detail to the garg's or are they silhouettes?

I figured there'd be plenty of nasty looking gargoyles so I went for the sympathy vote: A poor imp went exploring in the forest and got lost. It'll soon be dark... and he hears scary noises! :(

I can see the figure is a little hard to read. He has his knees tucked up under his chin.

Mike - Thanks for the pointer. I added a little bit. Still not right but I'm out on the town tonight so I'll let it sit. :)
kaptah - Funny. Love the gargoyle design. Nice colours and textures too.
Jeano - Nice stuff... seems to be a little hunched up?

This one started out great, then started to look worse as I added more detail - the gargoyle & vespa ended up looking superimposed. Strange... Any thoughts on unifying everything? Riq, I tried to take your advice on focal points.
[EDIT] I took Gumdrop's advice and stopped being so timid about putting orange highlights on the Vespa... I also brought more orange to the bottom of the picture in general. I think it worked - thanks a bunch, GD.
Pallette:
http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/gargoylepallette.jpg
I used a reference for the Vespa:http://www.castelvetrano.info/vespa.jpg
Kaptah - Really nice depth. It almost feels 3d.
Gumdrop - I like the trees/forest technique. The gargolye is suffering from the same superimposed feeling though. He's not as sharp as the rest of the image - I'd recommend sharpening up his edges in a few spots.

Thanks Gumdrop, Oregano, Iotrez, BlkCelebration, and Riq, especially for the crits (on the elephant dsg). I'm new to painting, and not exactly sure how to go about it. So any tips/crits you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. I tried using darker values to build the forms this time.
BTW beautiful Gumdrop!

Vicini the gargoyle was exiled from his perch atop of Buckingham palace in 1905 for allegedly abusing his vantage point to view the princess whilst she was undressed. For this, his eyes were were removed, and his wings were severed, thus making him walk for the duration of his existence, without ever seeing his true path. In his rage, he uprooted a lamp post from the front of the pallace, grabbed his severed eyes, and fled, never to return.

Here is my gargoyle, I wanted to do more than just a line drawing, but my coloring didnt come out how i wanted too, but I was also expirmenting a new techinque in photoshop. The reason i dont like the colored one is that she looks too manish, that might also be because of the angle I shot my refrence at. Also using myself as a refrence for a girl may not have helped out as much either, even though i also used a girl for refrence as well, its hard to mix and match different bodies.

It's true. I have two prismacolor markers and one is purple (the other is black obviously). I know it's messy, but hopefully the feeling is there. I was afraid to use the BLACK black on the figures, even tho they definitely need it in the shadows. Anyhow....
I was going to have some kinda knapsack with the gargoyle, but then drew the baby. It's along the order of the foundlings that people used to leave on the steps of the church.

Just popping in briefly while a take a brain break from my Thunder Dome project. I don't know if I'll post for today or not yet. I'll try and do a crit later tonight, but I wanted to say to Jahannes that the Twilight Zone with Shatner was the first thing that I thought of when I saw yours!

Eyebooger - great character detail but she would benefit heaps from a detailed background. As anonying and unfulfilling as they are to draw, backgrounds really help your picture's athetic nature.
Vely Bad Man - awesome texture and great lighting, no crits.
Iotrez - love it
DV8 - why does your gargoyle have a stick? :)

WOW! THis is the best topic EVER I love gargoyles!!!!
Gumdrop-I love yours....poor lil' guy....I feel like him a lot these days...lost with nowhere to go....
Idiot-I love the style of yours!!! Reminds of me of the Gargoyles from Disney's Gargoyles series!!
Railboy-I love the concept of this!!! The colors are brilliant too!! hahah the thought of a gargoyle+vespa...hahahahah....picture him going on a tour of europe to the great cathedrals
here's mine....it was actually an idea my roomate had that I put onto paper =0) so I guess it's a collaboration hehe....I hope that's allowed? Well....he's on a moving sidewalk at the airport....I was trying to capture the confusion and stress of trying to find your plane in a giant airport and being in a foriegn (foreign? SP?) place....heheh it's just a quick sketch but it made us laugh. :D
