It's been a long time since I last posted any work. These are just some artworks to show you what I have been up to the last year.
I guess it should be fine to post these by now since the game have been out. Thought you guys might like to see some of the early character concepts for the game :)

I will post more characters as Call of Duty: Finest Hour is released for the consoles later this year.

Cheers :chug:

Thanks everyone!! :)

Skank,
These were all done digitaly from sketch to finish using Painter and Photoshop.

gekitsu,
I worked on the characters designs and don't have any environments. I only contributed a small part to the game and the guys at Infinity Ward did a really awesome job making it immersive and fun.

hey great sketches! I love their faces and stances. Some of them remind me of some of the Band of Brother guys, in spirit.

like all the work i've seen from you so far... these are absolutely STUNNING...
i'd love to see your approach to inventing figures and faces... do you rough in your concepts in a similar way you do your quick sketches from life?
maybe have any shots of these concepts in earlier stages?

These character designs are amazing! I especially like the woman. Your use of values is remarkable. I wish they would put your designs on the cover.

Playing Medal of Honor currently, but will have to get Call of Duty next.

Thanks also for all the life drawing tips you have given!

Man, those are cool. Loved your ad comps from the other thread, as well.
As I slave away on yet another storyboard with with pretty, hip, young people with beer in their hands, you look like you lead a charmed life Kevin. Don't go and tell me otherwise,as I want to hold on to the fantasy.
Kudos.

Fantastic work as usual.
The realistic proportions and correct placement of features on the heads really adds something to your work that is not found in a lot of concept art.

Also, your costumes rock.

Wow Kevin,

I've been looking for some of your call of duty stuff and I've finally witnessed them. They are aweomse! Anyway, I was going to take your life drawing class at Gnomon this term but there were time conflicts. I hope you're still teaching there next term so I can at least get some pointers from the master. I also signed up too late for your character class. I'm hoping to get into that one too next term. Anyway, keep on posting those wonderful images. They're very inspirational. =)

Thanks!!

New artworks. Here are some charcoal head sketches of seniors in the game.

http://ww2.imagewiz.net/images/kchen/13392_Kchen_Elder_Head_Studies.jpg

Here are the step by step process of the paintings (left to right):

1) Composition sketch (Using BG element to stage/frame character)

2) Block in local dark values (I like to work from dark to light. It also helps me simplify my image into big shapes)

3) Modeling Big Shadow gradations to describe form (Simplify, soften dark value shapes)

4) Adding light shapes gradations to describe form (Simplify, soften light value shapes)

http://ww2.imagewiz.net/images/kchen/13393_SniperWIP_Step1.jpg

5) Modeling details on top of major forms. (Add details and focus)

6 ~ 7) Try out different haircut and uniform to change shapes.

8) WaLaaa~!! Finshed image.

http://ww2.imagewiz.net/images/kchen/13394_SniperWIP_Step2.jpg

Same process. Block in flat local values for composition and mood first. Then start simplifying shapes and adding details in focus areas.

http://ww2.imagewiz.net/images/kchen/13395_WehrSnow_WIP_Steps.jpg

It takes me around 4 ~ 6 hours to paint one of these, depending on how much I am struggling with the overall design. These were both started in Photoshop and then finished in Painter.

I work pretty sloppy on these paintings, so this is not the cleanest tutorial for step by step. It might give you a rough idea of how this process is applied. For better reference, you should look at kincept's Sargent Study tutorial for a cleaner demostration of the same process.

Kincept Painting Tutorial (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13511)

Hope this will help :)

We are not worthy!
Thanks for this Kevin. I'm assuming you do the initial sketch using old fashioned pencil and paper? Interested to know from someone who has such strong drawing skills, what you think of doing it in Painter.

Urg, UnrealII syndrome. Game was mediocre, yet the concepts are great.

I'm actually debating on getting a real Mosin-Nagant for hunting because I liked the ingame one so much.
