View Full Version : Unreal II XMP concepts (updated, actual models by Louis)

Hey peoples..........

Thought I would post up some stuff I did at Legend Entertainment. This stuff was for the Unreal II add-on called XMP.

This stuff is about a year old and was my first effort at real "spacey" type things.

Its kind of painful to pull this old stuff out because I feel I have progressed as an artist........but I figure you guys might be interested in some true, no-bullcrap-under-a-tight-deadline, game concepts.

I am still searching for the vehicles I did. I will post them when I find them.

Later
Jay

Nice concepts! It's always nice to see early concept art, and these look great, to boot. Thanks for sharing! I really like the tech guy (especially his glove) and the first ranger evil variant (the non-color one).

Nice work hawk, even though it's old. Do you still do markersketches or are all your new stuff digital?

8-10 enviorment sketches a day. Thats impressive. You don't have more of those to show? How large are the original sketches?

You should post more often, atleast once a week ;)

Dude..............I have succumbed to the digital-bit-brained box on my desk. I havent done a real marker drawing in months. Its all photoshop now.

I usually work 8X10. 200 dpi on the puter.

that dropship is a very solid concept, you must have been bummed out they diddn't use it. - anyways, it's interesting to see your initial sketches toward the bottom of your post, the thumbnails -

I think the character models are a real joy to look at, and would've loved to see them in-game. The machinery and environment stuff is great too, but I really dig those characters.

hey, great sketches!! You've got some really cool shape and detail ideas, and top-notch presentation to boot! I noticed visible perspective grids behind some of your sketches, are the grids generated digitally? and if so how and in what program?

yessir..........

Force wireframe on a few boxes in Max with the environment turned to white.

Then I just adjust the brightness/contrast in Photoshop and make them barely visible..........then print out an assload!

Never draw a vanishing point again. Thats what I say!

hey that's a good idea - gridding up my page before i start slows me down something fierce. i suppose it would be a huge advantage to have something allready on hand.

I think these are really really good lookin. Nice designs and great execution. I haven't seen a lot from you, since I haven't been here too long, but in my eyes these are some of the best I've seen you post.

You swank bastard! All rock, but I like the dug-in tank best. It's sucky having to draw characters in the dreaded neutral pose, ain't it? :D

hawkprey
January 16th, 2004, 10:49 AM
Jason............I usually start with the front.

Chuk.....Man I kinda got into the character sheets for awhile. I am wierd though. I havent done a true character sheet since I finished these a year ago. Now I draw all my characters in a nice stance, 3/4 front and 3/4 back.

Email me chuk. How are things?

eww, 3/4 back sounds like a load of fun....

im gonna pick your brain here...
when you would draw sheets like these, how do you go about measuring your figures so they are so semetrical? do you keep them all the same scale for the ref sheets and then show the size difference on a different sheet?
btw, this went into my inspiration folder....as has almost your entire gallery on your website...thanks for posting!

3/4 back kicks my ass.

With these I usually draw the front view and then put it on a layer set at 20% opacity. Then I draw the side view under it. Then I just flip the front view to draw the back view.

Good stuff Hawkprey.
Haven't seen much enviromental stuff from you, so this was really a nice surprise.

Characters & vehicles are strong, and I think the dropship design is good too.

It's great quality and prodigious quantity, but throughout the entire Unreal product line I've always had a gripe about the armor. It always seems like "armor" means bulk and tons of seamed-together plates in the designs, and never seems to account for flexibility without simply resorting to leaving flex-space around the joints.

It'd be interesting to see something more dynamically flexible while armored, with overlapping segmentation or some sort of draped armor instead of big restrictive chassis plates with exposed joints between them.

I'm not entirely sure I'm allowed to do this, but I figured there's no harm done in showing what a great job hawkprey did with the concepts and how they got translated in models by louis [who naturally also worked on the same XMP project].

Here's Louis work based on Hawkprey's concepts for those who didn't get a chance to see them.

Oh my, these are great! I love the environment designs.

I recently heard the most unfortunate news that Legend was closing it's doors, how sad.

Edit: I just realized, if you worked at Legend, does that mean you knew Mike Verdu? He's my cousin. :D

Ya Louis did a knock out job..........I dont think he minds if his stuff is posted here.

We had a blast developing these characters. I was the first time either of us had really done any "sci-fi" stuff.

didnt know Mike Verdu. He left Legend before I worked there.
Heard alot of good stuff about him though.
