Hi!
Well, I've been checking out CA for quite some time now and I decided to finally sign up. My name is Eric-Anthony, 17 years of age and I'm here to become a better artist. I have just recently started painting digitally with a tablet and it seems very difficult but I guess thats O.K. I will be posting both traditional and digital sketches.

It's my goal to reach the potential of a professional artist, and I thought I'd share my daily sketches here, to receive some critiques that will boost up my improvement.

I hope to receive a lot of crits and advice as that is very important to me.
Thx in advance! :D

Welcome to CA. That's a fun painting. The only thing I can say of it with my limited experience is that everything seems to be made of the same material. His glasses and his skin, for instance, both appear to be made of the same mysterious fleshy substance.:) If that is what it looked like after the guy's tutorial cool, but that's just something I noticed.

It does have much character, thought, which is great.

Keep painting, drawing, or whatever you prefer.

Thank you very much for the comment :D
Well, the painting in the video looked a lot better i'd say xD. I will work on colors and materials in my next painting! the skin is very hard to paint as i never get a realistic result :( btw this is my 2nd painting with my tablet :P

Ok so here are some more sketches, mostly figure studies and some random stuff xD
my shading isn't very good so I'll work on that some more.
Sketches like these take me about 30 minutes.

Ok so i just started painting this piece.. its a wip, so give me some advice :P

January 31st, 2010, 01:24 PM
nice portrait you have in the first post.

as for your most recent wip here, I suggest you pay attention to the underling structure of the face--her skull, and how it makes her face shaped the way it is.

Eric-Anthony
January 31st, 2010, 01:33 PM
a la bapsi: Thank you :D, I just rotated the image and saw the mistakes..

I really like how this picture is working out. but is her pupil area really that big? Anyway, finish it! I really want to see how it turns out. good luck

January 31st, 2010, 03:17 PM
i like your stuff my friend. though on that old man painting, it looks a little out of place to have such a textured background. i would save textures for a more dynamic piece, i could see that looking better without it. (just so the focus is more on your painting.)

and a crit for your most recent painting: there is going to be a lot of shadow inside her eye socket (between her right eye and nose). also, listen to a la bapsi.

and keevy, if your going to define the pupil, make it smaller. it looks like shes on LCD or something right now. though i didnt notice that until keevy pointed it out

keep it up :)

Eric-Anthony
January 31st, 2010, 03:39 PM
keevy39 ye i agree, it seems kinda big now that im looking at it.. i actually wanted it to be big but not "too" big of course, so i will def work on that.

avocado thx for the help, i will re-do the background and post a pic of it later.. i also worked on the girls face since my last post and i guess it looks better now. still have to find out how to paint her though ^^

To-do list:
-Work on the background of "old man" painting
-Edit the girl's eye
-Finding out how to paint hair

Here's how far i am atm, will continue working on it tomorrow..

Eric-Anthony
January 31st, 2010, 06:06 PM
*update*

Eric-Anthony

should i add more detail?

Jephyr X
February 8th, 2010, 05:30 AM
Hi Eric,

The portrait is coming along...so if you take a break...come back to it.

You have a good sense of movement and line in those gestures. Throwing some detail in is good practice...but I'd keep at these too.

My post didn't move you to the SB's page 1

BlackDelphin
February 8th, 2010, 08:21 AM
Well they're basically gesture sketches, and even if not, they're pretty detailed i think :)
Do a lot of flow and shape ones, and 1-2 really detailed ones if you want.
But as they are now, they're great! Nice curves.
Your portrait has a nice start too, but i think you're rushing it. Look at it more, find basic shapes, block in n then refine. Or whatever works for you, just don't rush it!

Do more, don't stop!!! :meow:

Eric-Anthony
February 16th, 2010, 01:29 PM
Jephyr X Thx for the comment! I am glad that you like my gestures.

BlackDelphin Thx. I haven't looked at the portrait for a while and just realised the mistakes I did.. Thx again for the help, I appreciate it very much! :D

Well, I haven't been online for a while because I've been very busy (school, work etc..). So I thought I'd update my sketchbook again with a little sketch I did a few days ago.

Here's the sketch (I got inspired by a video I saw and just painted my own version of the image):

Hey man! Nice gestures in the figure drawings. Try more observational drawings they really help accelerate your skills in the beginning. Draw whatever you can from life: your room, tabletop, anything! What you study helps to inform your future works so go go go!!!! :D

hello mate, you already have very nice skills :).
Your studies are going really good and if you keep them up i am sure your improvement is gonna be a fast one.
This study looks very good. There are some blacks in some shadows(one is in the nose i think)and some other similars that make it a little muddy.
Keep up the good work

Eric-Anthony
March 30th, 2010, 01:21 PM
well, i fixed some shadows and her cheekbones and i guess im finished now.
this is actually the first time that i like the outcome and the workflow of a digital painting i made :D
i still am kinda rubbish tho, but hey, i am here to learn :D

kingkostas
April 1st, 2010, 03:35 PM
nice :),but the work seems very close to the previous work in progress. In your next similar study try to put color with some little amount of black rather than black with some little amount of color, to do the shadows. You have a very nice rendering but it will give you more understanding if you study some more the color theory.Search in google or here in the forums and you will find a lot of info :)
Keep up the good work mate

Twan

this last portrait is really good, the colors are well-chosen , the mouth should be upper i guess
keep it up

Great sketchbook so far. I really dig how you handle your gesture drawings, and those Star Trek caricatures are simply awesome! I think that style suits you very well and I'd like to see you experiment with that more. Keep it up!

April 3rd, 2010, 03:43 AM
cgaddict: thx for this nice comment! and yes i will do some caricatures in the future :P.

Sweron: i am glad that you like my gesture drawings :D i worked really hard on getting the hang of it, but now i can sketch a detailed gesture of somebody in like 10secs :D.. being 17 isnt that great xD and i always feel like im behind when i look at other peoples sketchbooks :(

kingkostas: thx m8!

sketch of an arm, tried to concentrate on muscles.. not too satisfied with the outcome of the hand but i didnt care bout it too much anyways..

April 3rd, 2010, 06:50 PM
hey man nice stuff you got going here your sketchbook is looking good and i totally know what you mean about feeling behind when you look at others stuff but just take it as motivation and keep going my advice would be read some art books by people who really know what there talking about then do some studies from them

Big Bad Wolfman
April 4th, 2010, 04:53 AM
Hey man, nice sketch book you've got going here. I particularly like the woman study posted 27th march. Keep up the good work dude.

Eric-Anthony
April 4th, 2010, 06:02 AM
prsnsweeney: its sometimes very hard to take it as motivation though :/ lol.. i already read loomis' books and a few others. right now im working through sheldons book called "see it, feel it, trace it".. i hope i will improve soon xD

Big Bad Wolfman: thx for checking out my sketchbook and leaving a nice comment :D!

two sketches ive done this morning...

sketch 1: a simple mountain scene and one of my 1st environment sketches. didnt come up with the rest of the scene yet, help is appreciated!

sketch 2: just a character sketch, nothing special.

April 4th, 2010, 06:12 AM
Your bicep sketch seemed to be good for the basic idea... it also looks like a second bicep is growing on the man's arm though.

- Your enviro is fine so far....be careful with adding too much highlight before you have all the basic elements in the image

- Anatomy trouble with the arms on the second sketch. I see you are adding gesture and "weight" to the character but watch your basic anatomy structure (unless it is stylized)

Qikalain
April 11th, 2010, 07:04 PM
Woah i visited also your blog and you mad alot of progress in your sketchbook/blog. those pencil drawings of the woman are really good looking.

btw. i dont know if your signature is some sort of watermark you add digitaly.. but if not its a bit to big.. its like you want to give it more attention then the actual work itself

Eric-Anthony
April 16th, 2010, 02:44 PM
liquidjack: thx for the great advice and i will try to concentrate a bit more on anatomy from now on!

Qikalain: thx for checking out my blog! i will have a look at urs too :D oh and bout the signature, i actually just slapped it on the pic without really thinkin bout how it looks xD..

Hey, Eric-Anthony! Glad that you've visited my SB. I want to say that you have very nice skills of drawing... But I think as for me you don't have much detail in your paintings (I know sometimes they don't need, but).... But you are have a goal, and you will reach it, just don't be lazy! :)

Eric-Anthony
April 17th, 2010, 03:49 AM
sketch of an eagle.
the wings are kind of short, cause they wouldnt fit in my sketchbook. sorry. lol

i also tried some paint on the head. not to satisfied but i think its ok.

Thanks for visiting my sketchbook.
Your studies look good, just keep at it and keep going! That's what I did. You know, observation skills are very important, and sometimes we get so caught up in the smaller details that it only makes sense when it is zoomed up close until we back away. That's when you check for proportions and accuracy. That's my two cents. Hope that helps.

Eric-Anthony
April 19th, 2010, 04:57 AM
clifFroth: thx man.. a few people already told me that they like my caricatures but i dont really like drawing faces so im not sure if i will concentrate on caricature in the near future.

Eddieee: haha actually its one name but most people just say eric :P u can call me anthony tho ^^. i am glad that there are younger people on this site! i checked out ur sb and its really good. when did u start drawing? will u go to college? i might join the army reserves and go to college after that. anways, thx for the comment!

June 19th, 2010, 01:21 PM
you are already doing good. my suggestion would be to not focus on details at this stage. Think form is much more important. Also gesture, posing of a figure. Details would come later. Keep studying anatomy. Post #55 is my favorite.

Eric-Anthony

creature study. not yet finished. rendering can take sooooo long :(

Sulphur
July 20th, 2010, 03:34 PM
Woah, thats a painting? Thats ridiculously good.

As for whats missing, I think its a foreground and middleground really. I'd just put in whatever the tree is sitting on and perhaps another hill/mountain in between the foreground and the background mountain.

I absolutley love the walrus aswell! I'll check back!

piker
July 20th, 2010, 04:08 PM
something is missing.. ideas are welcome!

You might try to first block in a line sketch composition. Try using that Fibonacci stuff, or... maybe the rule of the thirds...

For giving it more depth it's a good idea to have some similar object in the three plans so that the eye could have a sort of a reference point moving into the scene.

Colour-wise a good tip is to try and avoid all-black areas. Darks - yes. Blacks - if any, only as accents here and there.

Eric-Anthony
July 20th, 2010, 04:18 PM
Sulphur: thx for the kind comment :D. i checked out your sketchbook and its really nice!

piker: thx for the advise. im not really good with lighting and color so i keep forgetting not to add too much blacks :/ i will try to work on that! thx for stopping by :)

Eddieee
July 20th, 2010, 04:35 PM
Hey Eric! Really nice indication of form in that walrus! The matte painting shows promise too. The values/fore, mid, and background are all there, which is good :) Maybe try looking up some matte masters like Dylan Cole, Dusso, and try to study how they approach integrating photos and painting to make a seamless image.

And sorry to answer your questions so late. I started drawing seriously like 2 years ago but I only started painting digitally since last year. Still dunno about college, it's really expensive here. I heard college in Germany is free/paid for by the govt? Amazing! D: Well I wish you luck in the reserves, college, or whatever you choose to do :)

Eric-Anthony
July 20th, 2010, 04:46 PM
heyy :).. college in germany isnt really "free" lol. it depends on what u study. like art is mostly private so u have to pay like 20.000€ :(.. atm im working on my portfolio so i can submit it to the artcenter in pasadena, ca. and if im lucky i might get a scholarship xD. i also wanted to submit my portfolio to TAD but i think submissions are closed already :(. i started drawing digitally last year in october when i got my first tablet as a bday present :) its very hard to get used to it and i still suck at it haha. mostly i draw in my sketchbook

July 21st, 2010, 02:43 PM
Hey Eric really liking your line work even on your quick gestures, how long did you spend on them? Also good job on the rendering on the walrus so far although it does look a little plasticy at the minute, but who am i to crit! haha. Keep up the SB mate!

Eric-Anthony
July 23rd, 2010, 02:42 PM
fudgeloaf: i usually spend bout 10 to 20 seconds on a gesture. thx for the comment :)

AliceA: thx :P. i think my gestures suck but many people have told me that they are actually quite good.

Twan: thx :) the nude took me bout 20minutes. it could be bit more detailed though...

aLDoDarK: thx! usually i start all my work as a "practice" and not as "this has to come out as a finished illustration"..

-----------------------------------------------------

i will post some sketches, scribbles later on. my laptop just died again and i had to delete most of my files (including my .PSD files *cry*).. i bought a new HDD so i hope it'll work this time.. i am actually installing photoshop and my tablet right now.

Just gone through your whole sb, definatly some progress there. And the environments you've done recently are fantastic.
Minor crit on the Chinese lady, you should move the "we" over to the other side. It'll look more balanced, and read better too - "IN GOD" & "WE TRUST"

The ScepticalSaint thx for the comment and you're right about the "we"! will change it soon.

thanks for dropping by my sketchbook man. the digital studies are loking solid. maybe try pushing the contrats a bit more and deepen the shadows to really give the shapes form.

despite what uou say, i think that figure study in #104 is looking seeeeriously good

Hi there,

The Chan study is pretty good, actually. Clearly you didn't go down to the skin and pore level, but you don't need to do that yet. I personally don't think you generally need any more contrast than you already have here, as you are clearly not afraid to put the blacks in where they are tastefully needed, etc. (apart from the latest arm study - what was that made of again? :-) and maybe the Chan needs a bit more shading in places, I am not entirely positive).

Love your experimentation and the use of colour (speed painted green tree thing - great!), so it'd be nice to see more colour, more practice of the human form and more academic stuff - see where those shadows are really meant to be on objects, etc, instead of basically using fatter lines for shading.

Best wishes,

Ana

Your brush textures are improving but are still a bit shaky. The traditional sketches are a lot better since the textures feel more natural. Also with some of the character work it's important to keep it tidy and clean - getting rid of things you've erased is generally a good idea.

About the landscapes - I've noticed that you put quite a bit of effort in the understanding of shapes in anatomy but it seems that this is lacking in your landscape paintings. Studying the shapes of stone, especially what defines it (textures etc) in small steps should build an understanding. So I'd advice steering clear of the large ambitious paintings and start at the same level as your anatomy drawings - Pure observation.

Hope that helped mate, good luck and have fun!

Good to see you're having fun :) I wish I had more time to write down loads of advice but I'll keep it brief.
First of all when you do studies make sure you get the most out of them, spend time visualizing the thing from all angels, thinking about the way light is hitting it and thinking about the 3d form. 3D form is hugely important. Then once you've finished a study ALWAYS apply it by doing a piece from imagination.

My biggest advice to you right now would be to spend time on your work, and really enjoy putting effort into it and making it the best you can. Look at your favourite artists' work as you paint and try to draw that into your own pieces :)

Thank you for adding me to your signature, it's very humbling

nice value study there! maybe you could try to go darker with some of the shadows, like the hair is the darkest value in your study, but it's not very dark yet. If you have a wider range between the darkest shadow it will have much more contrast. Keep it up!

Hi Eric. Thanks for the comment in my sb

Nice leap from the first page to this point, there´s definitely progress. I think your onto something with those enviros, good atmospheric perspective on this one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1205756&stc=1&d=1302033387) particularly

I was suggestion i would say try in some sketches to bring out volumes with light and shade and the turning of planes without outlines or making a silhouette of the form, makes you more conscious of the foreshortening and the specifics of the different masses, its always usefull even when you like using linework in your approach, but now looking back , the grandma sketch already shows a lot of that. Just keep on working man.
