Greetings. Long time sketchbook lurker, first time poster :P

The following posts represent some of what I've done since relocating from Texas to L.A. for my arts education approx 6 months ago. I'll try and work towards developing some concept stuff, but I still feel that I need to pay my (significant) dues with figure drawing and draftsmanship in general.

Comments, critiques, questions and suggestions welcome.

Thanks for checking out my thread. It's funny that you've worked with Charles and Hope. I had Charles for AA last semester and Hope for the past 2 semesters of figure drawing. Your short poses look really good. When you get into the longer poses, take more time with construction and think about line quality. Your figures tend to have somewhat of an outline. I know Charles is a fan of the rough newsprint, but I just find it easier to get flat tones and smooth transitions on the smooth, using either the Conte or a 2b charcoal pencil. Keep drawing!

@MichelleFarro: Thanks for the observations. I've been unhappy with the heavy presence of contours in my drawings as of late also. As for line control, that's an issue I'm continuously working on since I have a heavy hand and tend to overpress (hurts my back/shoulder also).

@Twan: The work from imagination will get addressed - I've just started a Creature Design class with Jerad Marantz and for our first homework assignment we're suppose to redesign three classic movie monsters. Wish me luck, I'm more inclined towards character designs, not creatures.

Hey man. I'm seeing a lot of improvement in your drawings lately.
One thing though, when shading, I think you have the tendency to make the core shadows too sharp. Use the broad side of the pencil to make them nice and soft. Often times I can't tell the difference between your cast shadows and your form shadows. When the model is lit with a spotlight the difference should be more apparent. Contrasting soft edges with sharp edges will really add a lot to your drawings.

Thanks. I think I'm taking Rick's teachings regarding massing shadow shapes a bit too far in practice - at least with colored pencils. I'll work on using the side of the colored pencil to shade the same way I do with Conte or charcoal pencils.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! Your figure studies are great! I guess I will try just to do gesture drawing as long as my figure drawing society only vote for short poses.
