Hi there!
You start right away with studies! That's awesome!
I think what kingkostas mean is to draw the line fewer times. Sometimes you (like everyone else learning to draw) draw the same line a couple of times, to make it fit your idea of the image. Resulting in a hairy looking line. So with more confident lines and fewer strokes you get a cleaner look. The lines dont have to pe perfect and straight they just need to live their life. I hope I make any sense. :) I was king of fuzzy lines so I know its hard to clean up drawing style. :)
Keep it up and work hard! Cheers!
oh and welcome to CA! :D

Another Update. I know its been like a month and 3 days since my last but i havn't really done anything note worthy.
I'm attempting on doing a collab with a friend but i need any advice on landscape drawing anyone can give me. I know the whole draw from life but i could use some technical advice about it.

Update [3/30/10]
Mr.Thorne
May 30th, 2010, 11:36 PM
So yeah started working again in a hell hole to pay for college. Thats alright though cause now that i've woken up at midnight and have nothing else to do i updated my SB. All of these took like under an hour besides the more polished shaded robot which took like 6 hours and the helicopter that is taking up like 3 days worth of time for just the concept of it that isn't all that great.

A 10 min self portrait i did today. You can thank the animator Egoraptor and the webcomic GG Guys for the poop thing. It was the face in Awesome Center that made me make his face and draw it and the comic cup of soup that i put that down there.
Not my best work but again its only 10 mins and it was fun.

nice work man. Your line is a little scratchy though and your shading lacks definition, but keep up the good work and improve as much as you can.

Yeah i'll be working on that a lot in a portrait I'm doing for a friend. Most of these are under 5 mins so as you can imagine i didn't clean them up or anything.

Just a quick little update on a request i got from a friend to draw one of there portraits. Good experience since i don't do a lot of drawings of the head really and is holding me back a little bit in my eyes.

Thanks for stopping by

I second Joce's speech, try to do some more (much more) anatomy studies, as well as life drawings, and try to understand all the forms and relations between the shapes and sizes.. pay atention to contrasts and lighting, etc. the way to do it is practice, nothing else!
keep drawing!

ok man i think you better start studying gestures
Mr.Thorne
October 9th, 2010, 10:46 PM
@AndreRuben - Yeah i do need to spend more time. There is just a lot of drama between me and my family that has just started so its getting hard to have a moment of peace.
@andres333 - I need to do more of everything it seems. Didn't really think of doing gesture studies though so thanks for pointing that out.

November 5th, 2010, 06:04 PM
Nice, keep the studies going. The last WIP is interesting, but indeed you have to upload smaller pics so we can actually see them on fit-screen. Try to draw softer lines and make shading using lines on different directions. In that way you will see how the skatch will be more easy to work on going back and forth. Thanks for stopping nu at my sb man. Keep up and take care.

November 6th, 2010, 07:46 AM
@raminafshari - Thanks, Yeah i keep making that mistake it wont be happening again.
@knut- - Thanks, Yeah i figured that out i just need to break my habits of going all lines and going to dark and adding to much pressure on my pencil.

Hey dude!
Thank you for commenting my sketchbook!
You have a great start here and there is only one point i would suggest you to practice: try to make your lines in one turn. Don't do 1000000 lines until there is the correct one.
This will improve your drawings a lot. :)

@Falchion - Thanks
@Silwynar - It started like that but old habits die really hard. I'll be watching that more though.
@alexson - Thanks. Going to be doing the 100 figures a week thing if i can. School is somewhat getting in the way though.

Just keep practicing, and keep up the good work. :D

Try drawing human figures and poses on a daily
basis, then you try to do those lines more fluidly
and not like chicken scratches.
Get yourself a good book about perspective
and try reading and drawing from it, if you
have not done that already.

November 18th, 2010, 10:22 AM
Hey Thorne! I see you like metal gear solid too ;) I would agree with LtPlissken. Its something I need to work on too. chicken scratches that is.. Lol and making more fluid lines instead. I guess its a bad habit ive gotten into or something. anyways, keep drawing!

Hey,
looks to me like you could use some tips :)
1. Your lines are very shaky. Take for example those last sketches of people - you tend to draw contours many times. Try to draw for example a head with only one or two strokes - no need to repeat the lines and draw again over the contour.
2. I think you would benefit from doing some gesture drawings - that way you will learn to draw with quick and smooth lines and you won't even have time to draw over what you already drew. Here's a great tool: link (http://www.pixelovely.com/tools/gesture.html). Set time for a minute or two and try to capture the movement or pose of a person, do not concentrate on details.
3. Keep sketching, I think it's too early to work with colours without learning some basics first. Do gesture drawings, learn anatomy and proportions from books and watch perspective and I am sure you will improve.
I am beginner myself so I shouldn't probably go around criticizing other people's art but those are the things I think you should work on at this stage. I will stop by again and see how you're doing :)

@Naidy Thanks i am making an effort with my current attempts on loomis' work
@qlotzan Thanks i am working harder and harder on daily sketching.
@LtPlissken I am right now. I drew a few people in the subway and though they aren't to good they are showing improvement.
@Sean McClain Thanks
@Justyna That link is so friggen useful. Thanks for it. I am trying to work on my line quality and i am improving on it, just need to slow down cause i sketch really fast most of the time.

Hey man, basically what everyone is saying, try being more confident with your lines, try to have the direction in your head before you lay down a line, always think when drawing. it comes with time no worries. most of all just keep drawing man and do NOT get discouraged.

Your studies are looking good. Just remember that before you move on to the next study try to get it exact. Also, it's very helpful to spend more time on just one single study, like shading and getting the figure just right. Spending more time on it is a good way to keep the figure of it in your head and is a good oppurtunity to practice shading.

nice sketch in post 18! i like the linework :-) will you colore it somday?
post 4: nice typography study! ^^
a little question in the end: i think it's better to scan the sketches instead of making a photograph of it ;-)

Thanks for dropping by my SB! :)
Very nice studies. Especially the perspective ones. It's a really tricky thing to master I think. A good way to practice is drawing simple forms like boxes with one or two vanishing points. This can be combined into a value study if you imagine a primary lightsource and think out how lhe light will behave with the objects. Or doing this with life studies.
I hope this helps, youre doing good.
Keep it up!

good to see you doing so many studies. You attracted lots of good advice allready. One from me, to improve your lines and perspective, start using grids when sketching. Just a few low opacity line in the background should help you a lot. Also, use a ruler too occasionally when sketching. Get used to it. IT will come in handy.
LtPlissken
December 18th, 2010, 04:49 AM
You improved, but you have to start
studying values. Take a ball or box or
some object, and try to render it in grayscale.
Try to do more simpler value studies, before
you get to a full face painting.

hi.. thanks for ur comment.. i notice in ur study's that ur lines are erm.. how u say it.. not well tought about.. lots of small lines..
try too think more about the line u gonna put on the papper.. remember drawing isn't just putting lines on a paper.. u have too think about them first..
keep it comin..

Your graphic design work and photos are very good. You need more drawing experience though. Try doing more than just copying from Bridgeman and study what he says as well as what other artists say about bones and muscles and how they connect and the planes of the form, etc.

nice start to your SB. I'd love to see you do a landscape, I noticed you said you would like some tips on landscapes. It's kinda hard to just list tips out of the blue, try spending at least 2 hours on a landscape then post it and we can give you some tips. Other than that, just keep up the studies!

Thanks everyone for the advice and tips. I just started Drawing and Perspective classes and learned some new ways of looking at things. Chances are i wont be active if you havn't noticed by now for a bit though i plan to update and attempt to look at others stuff when i get free time. [just learned how to use Negative and Positive spaces. Sorta lame i didn't know about it]

A show of progress to alert everyone i'm not dead but busy. Starting to work on a gaming project and unlike my other attempt this one has a stronger footing for what i want to do and ideas written down and research started on it. Enjoy the self portrait i did. Lemur head should be bigger and i am going to work on this more and update this with the progress seeing as my face in shadow [the front of my face] Should be darker and the highlights should not be white. Also Lemur is not properly shaded.

Do some more studies and learn face structure, the portrait is almost flat.
Anyway, I hope you will post some stuff from that gaming project you're working on :)
