Today's topic is: Creature: Armored Elephant and Warrior/rider

example of a RHINO that JOHN HOWE did:

http://www.artistsuk.net/acatalog/mini-RhinoArmour-John_Howe.JPG

ok... everyone seems confused

the topic is... 1) an elephant 2) the elephant has armor on it 3) there's a guy riding the elephant

Cybot Floor

ehm, is this an armored warrior elephant, a warrior in elephant(hide) armor or what?

The battle elephants rolled freely over the desolate wastelands of Japan.

It's Armored elephant and warrior, i'll change the wording of the topic

Thanoz
February 6th, 2004, 05:07 AM
It's still a bit confusing. Armored elephant and warrior. Does that mean it's an armored elephant and the elephant is a warrior? Or is it Armored elephent, and a separate individual, that is a warrior?

is it me or do some people dig wayyyyyyyy to deep into the meaning of the subject
think for 30 sec then draw what you think
there is no right or wrong
i hate it when everyone does the same "theme"

just my 3 cents

mjw4745276
February 6th, 2004, 05:58 AM
I'm on board with you lance, interpret the subject as you see fit. It's about using your imagination not being told exactly what to draw.

Well here's my effort.. Wasn't inspired but had a free 20 minutes.

Wrong, its a armored human on a elephant.

did you know, elephants are the only terrestrial mammals, that are incapable to jump...?

Well, when the frogs took over in the fourth millenium, it was the very first thing they dealt with...

i wanted to paint him an armor too, but as soon as i started, he shouted "Are you mad!?" (creepy thing, such an shouting, painted frog) "We will sink like a stone in all this mud!"
Well, he has a dangerous looking weapon-thing in his hand, so i better left it...

http://aaronsart.5u.com/images/elephant_copy.jpg oh why am i so lazy. Is there any other budding artists out there who find that you loose inspiration half way through a picture. I just cant be bothered to finnish it its lost its appeal to me now. I have an idea in my head of how i want it to look exactly but ther more i draw the less it looks like it.

thanoz:
did anyone notice, how that poor elephant is navigated ? :D Poor thing. ANd cant even see...

breton:
for your update iwish me other colors. baby-blue and baby-pink are not worthy for a battleelephant with three(!) proboscis (is that really the word? my dict says so...)

mjw4745276: cool. especially for an uninspired quickie

davi: nothing worse to say but "where are the ears?!?"

evisr8r: thats a pitty. it would look even better with colors. (somehow your soldier reminds me on subzero/skorpion *g*)

wednesday: great as usual. and unusual, too. as usual. ;)

hesse: nice realisation :) you should try to give it more depth, though. the proboscis (thats cant be the word... ) looks extremly flat.

ancient kitten: what is that green on the elephants left? is it the elephant-armor? if it is, try to seperate it a bit more from the rider... btw: great result for a first try with painter! you should try painter8. i dont know, how i should work without layers...

plaf: amazing! no proposals...

graphicmaster: ou have a really talentated pencil. Does he have a twin perhaps? ;) The transition from leg to body is a bit confusing, though. is there any?

sabre: great perspektive. im really feeling tiny... but there something wrong with his legs: the feet should be thicker than the legs and the legs should be a bit more apart.

No twin, sorry. I agree my sketch could use an overhaul. I was really tempted to go look up a elephant picture. After looking at a few of yours I noticed I had the tusk curved the wrong way.

Hazzard: I love yours I wish I had such talent!

SABRE: I like the one tone of grey and black. My only suggestions is the elephant looks like it is going to fall over.

plaf: You make me jealous!

Cybot Floor: Like the warrior!, I don't think an Elephants legs can bend like a grasshoppers, although you might have ment to make it look like a frog...

yes, thats the reaseon, i wrote "when the frogs took over in the fourth millenium, it was the very first thing they dealt with..."

the mighty frogs have gen-manipulated the elephants, so they can jump. because, they are the only terrestrial... ...

riq - thats badass, i love the environment.. i've yet to accomplish the free form speed painting style like that.. coul you recommend some brushes to use in photoshop to get a similar effect?

plaf - simple, and effective.. i love the color scheme. you've got great style.

wednesday - thats creepy as hell.. makes me think dr seuss on a different type of hallucinagin :p

graphicmaster - excellent perspective. i tried and tried to get the "under the elephant" view but it never worked out.. my only crit is, it looks like the elephant's right leg is coming out of its cheek... but maybe i'm just not looking close enough. great job.

Thanoz: Ehm, ... ah..uh I gotta ask. Is the dick harness for steering? Control of speed? Or...What for?????

Bretton: That´s one weird style.

mjw4745276: (Man that´s a heavy nick) Well, I don´t wanna have that thing charging on me. Looks pretty medival. The perspective on the lance is well done.

Hey Davi: :D Cool ta see one of you. Wow. Ahm, I hope am not beeing too forward: I´d miss the ears and, hate to say that, the elefants feet are too small. (Before anyone asks, the feet, not the legs) Cool pic though, yay.

evisr8r: That´s an interresting pose. And a damn good idea for a war elefant head plate.

Wednesday: DUDE! You COMPLETLY mixed the topic up. WA-HooooOOOH. .........wow. That´s Style. Am turnin green.

Hesse: I think that small guy is totally outta his league. hehehe

Ancient Kitten: Nice first .. ah second try. I still avoid painter somehow.

Plaf: That´s cool. All white like that. Looks pretty fast done. Good one. Used any reff by any chance?

GraphicMaster: Looks kinda distortet, a-heh. But is he only two footed?

Sabre: Cool shadow work. That´s alotta spikes, huh. Good one.

Cybot Floor: (Hey Rolf. ...oder Olaf?:D) I laughed so hard. Stop licking the frogs. -then they´ll stay queit. "KRÖTENLEKKEN"

Hazzard: Boy, I know eggzaktly how you feel. Same here. But I tell you, you gotta finish and pull through. Hey, it´s the first pic eith a babe. :nudge:

riq: ...me...spechless.....wow.....like...Hannibal infull tilt.....
:jawdrop:

Well, here´s mine. Don´t look for the rider. I left the twig so that you can see where I planned to put him. So it´s an "armored warrior elephant." I concentrated more on surface than on armor design. That´s my first attempt on producing a shiny metal armor entirely in ps. Somehow it got more and more gory. I used a little plastic fant as a ref. about 4 h.

Ok this is my first post for the DSG and hopefully my image uploads properly. If it doesn't someone please help me out.
Finally, I got it to work. I wanted my elephant's armor to be a physical part of his body, hence the horns coming out of him. There is a lot of great work up here and everyone is pretty creative. I really love the elephant done in Illustrator, that thing is insane. Good job everyone.

wow, not only a elephant in armor and arms, but also an unarmed dinosaur - and he has arms too! ;) that totaly compensates the lack of warriors imo

vital k: why is it so out of focus? i`d guess, you painted it with airbrush-tool? it helps to erase the blurred outlines.

Fun Fact: Elephants were used in a war against the romans but were only effective for a short amount of time. Not because the elephants were good war-animals, but because they invoked fear into the enemy. The romans found out that the elephants were afraid of horse blood and would run in fear when they smelled it.

ooookay. well, the dude is really little more than a stick figure, but he's steering that thing. I put a little..hmm...turret at the top so he could duck and shoot off that bow on his back. the poor oliphaunt..there's some hidden jointing in there, and some padding to keep the metal from digging into his hide.

some reference, not a whole lot. took about 30 minutes. I'll be glad to get a digital pad for this kinda thing (then I can do a 45 second background at least).

The dick harness is for accelleration. It's a choker strap that never really loosens, because it is from a pre-loosen strap technology era. Basically you get on the elephant, you pull on the dick choker, and that starts the elephant rolling. Once you decide you want him to stop increasing in speed, you stop yanking vigorously at the leash. When you want to slow down, you stab the dagger into the elephant's brain, killing it - only adviseable if there is another replacement battle elephant within view. Otherwise, the warrior could suffer a long, possibly exhausting walk. Also, what's not visible, but definitely present, is a hole in the elephant's skull that is drilled out specifically for the stabbing, as well as for the warrior to insert his penis into, that's what steers the elephant and aims the revolver at the end of the trunk.

I wasn't going to comment on every pic' but there's just so many great images today.

Thanoz - Fun idea. Is that a brake cable attatched to the elephants genitals?!

Bretton - Love the concept of the squid head and the long legs. The pink warn bits are a nice touch... something I forgot to add.

mjw4745276 - I like the armour on this. Nice perspective but would like to see it bigger.

davi - The execution is sweet. Love the head and the bone armour, but the front of the saddle could use something?

evisr8r - Is the elephant dead or resting? The eyes seem to indicate it's resting.

Wednesday - Extremely nice stuff. The face of the beast is just great, and the elephant mask with tentacles is a nice touch. Very moody.

Hesse - I must have genitals on the brain tonight. I had to look twice to realise it was a man between it's legs. :o

Ancient Kitten - I like this. Are they water melons the elephant is carrying? Can't quite it make out. A little more definition would be sweet... the vagitation looks great.

plaf - really nice design and brush strokes. Creates a great sence of mass and power.

GraphicMaster - Good design... particularly the head piece, but the foot and only one ear visible throws me off.

SABRE - great armour. The shoulder plates on the front legs are kick ass, and you can't go wrong with a few well placed spikes!

Cybot Floor - An ele-frog?! Fun stuff. I think the design needs to be illustrated better though. I would have been lost if you had not explained.

Hazzard - Love the tech on this one. The womans helmet and breast plate are great. A baby elephant?

riq - Jeez I love this. really gritty and powerful looking.

elevenrequiem - It's a nice piece. I would like to see more texture on the elephant in contrast to the smooth armour though. I like the small tusks.

Rimshot - the pencil work round the elephants face looks great. The war paint is a cool idea too.

bbwolf - I'm not too hot on all the blood (makes the pic look a little messy IMHO), but the armour is real nice.

m0rph - The one tusk extreme closeup throws me a little. I think if you added the second tusk and some shading it would give the pic alot more impact.

vital-k - The armour looks great on this. I love the eye protectors and the rings at the base of the tusks. Nice colours and rider. Maybe sharpen the image a little? Looks out of focus.

Bimdog - Nice. I like your style alot. Great elephant pose, and the addition of a protective carapace for the rider is interesting. The elephants head looks a little winde though.

Idiot - Ahah... this is what I was looking for: Elephants and massed infantry ranks. I chickened out so I'm pleased you had a go. It's a great start and I would love to see you add detail to it.

GK Smith - Ouch! Cool spikes there. The face and the ears look really great. I like the hints of green in the skin too.

Beatnik - SuReal nice look. Again the head and ears stand out the best for me. I know what you mean about a pre-armoured beast. I spent quite a bit of time on skin texture so I was reluctant to cover it up.

young paddy1 - I was wondering what the spots were on the ear and then remembered seeing elephants like that. Nice touch. Good to see you experimenting with different brushes, but I think a little more consistancy would have helped in this instance.

dingoegret - Great pose, and a cool little dude on top. Would like to see a nice bright colour scheme on it to match the style.

stormy - The head and the armour look great. The body looses some of the mass it should have IMHO. I think if you just changed the line of the back to be higher and more rounded it would work. Love the chariot style riding platform.

Johannes - YESSSSSS! I knew someone would do the gasmask... just perfect for elephants. The shield looks great with peep holes for both the elephant and the rider.

Matt Smith - Wow... what a nasty bastid. Love the multiple sets of tusks. Nice feet too!

eyebooger - Man that armour is sweet! Is that a grenade at the end of the trunk?

farmer - Sorry... Missed yours: The details are really nice, particularly the saddle. Nice texture on the elephants rump. The warrior is well designed but looks a little stiff, and the elephants back legs look like they are going to give way any minute. :D Nice pic though.

Heya,

Great stuff today guys.

Thanoz: That's just downright painful, guy. *painful*.

Bretton: I really like the long legs and multiple trunks.

mjw4745276: good sketch.

davi: Well done, as always. But did they trim that poor pacaderms ears off?

evisr8r: I like the loose look. Too bad you didn't color it, but I understand!

Wednesday: Ooph. way cool. Just slightly disturbing in a wierd gimme more sort of way. Really like the colors.

Hesse: Homer there's gonna be a grease stain before too long!

Ancient Kitten: I really like your lighting.

plaf: Heya guy. Great job.

GraphicMaster: the only drawing that sucks is the one that isn't drawn. I like the perspective on yours.

SABRE: THAT GUY HAD BETTER JUMP BEFORE THE ELEPHANT FALLS OVER!

Cybot Floor: Is that a Frogaphant? Too cool. 10 points for originality!

Hazzard: Looks good, but I think the elephant head is too big and the persons' body looks sort of twisted around, like their hips are facing one way and the rest of them is facing the other.

riq: damn.

elevenrequiem: good work, but I think Sir Knight there needs either a longer sword, or a spear.

Rimshot: slow natives? Good pic, but I can't tell if the guy is holding on to the elephant just to look cool or to keep from falling over after the battle.

bbwolf: Your armor is looking good. I like the idea of your picture. They snuck up on the dino while it was sunbathing, right? *g* Seriously, I like it. A little bloody, but what's some gore between friends?

m0rph: That's one honkin' big tusk. Where's the other one?

vital-k: Good work. Looks a little small compared to the guy. I keep wanting to focus my eyes!

Bimdog: Sorry, you can't say your stuff sucks. I think it's a good start. Spend some more time on it and I think you'll get the guy. People can be hard to do.

Idiot: I really like the mood of your piece.

GK Smith: That's really cool. It reminds me of one species of stegasaurus that has horns growing from its shoulders.

Beatnik: Looking really good. I would reduce the rider, as he's a bit too big. But looks over all really good.

young paddy1: The rope or whip reminded me of a fishing pole & line. Good job on the 'phant.

dingoegret: The look scared!

stormy: I like the idea of the turret placed on the head/neck area. Like the perspective.

Johannes: Brittania doesn't stand a chance! Cool pic!

Gumdrop: Very nice. Love the colors. Good composition as well.

Matt Smith: Looks good, though it looks like it's going to tip over to the right. If you rotate the picture in PS a little to the left, it should put it back in balance.

eyebooger: Let's be very clear about one thing - if I saw that thing staring at me, I'd scream like a girlie and run the other way. Period.

2kre8: I really like your style.

Faxtar: I like the warrior guy! Is that his helmet or his face?

Well, after sitting through 3 hours of The Return Of The King not long ago, complete with Mamuks stomping the bahjeezus out of the Riddermark, I decided to go with a slightly different bent on todays, which unfortunatley didn't work *quite* the way I wanted.

First, I skipped the rider thing for the above reasons. I based my sketch off of an alien race from a Larry Niven (??) book titled Footfall that I read about 10 years ago, in which you had a hostile alien species that closly resembled elephants, with the notable exception of being smaller and having two trunks instead of one.

So, with that said, here's mine for the day:

Pen sketch:

http://img9.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/Concept1/345-elephant-copy.jpg

Colored version:

http://img9.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/Concept1/345-elephant-color.jpg

Spent probably about 2 and half hours total. Don't care much for the colors. The orange/yellow on the arms and lower body is supposed to be part of his suit. That's tracer fire over his head and something burning in the background, not the gun.

Cheers,

Oreg.

I ended up liking my sketch of the plain elephant more than the armored... I probably should have used some armor reference.

Everybody else's was alive, so I went for dead. :) This elephant's warrior left after his ride was shot down by an enemy. Now it's hyena chow.

I cleaned this sketch up a bit, I wanted to put more armor on, but it conflicted with the pose. . . and I'm not sure why the rider is in the basket thing.

Thanoz- ha ha, reminds me of the far side. Your horizon is too stark, too straight.. Draw over it freehand to give it a little life.

Bretton- I love the concept and execution too.

davi- great exection and beautiful interpretation. My only worry is that everything looks too smooth. When I paint, I like to think that I'm trying to creat a rhythm using contrasts; light and dark, positive and negative, differing brush stroke, and soft and hard edges. Most of your edges fall on the soft side, so all of the form look very smooth, and there's are few contrasting shapes. I want to feel cylinders and blocks and folds, and whatever else you come up with. Also you've established a light source coming from the front, but you have light falling on the elephant's butt.

evis8r- cool concept and drawing. If you're going to do it fast, try getting more gestural. Don't draw the outlines, try to express the structure and gesture.

Wednesday- wow!! I'm saving this one for my desktop!

Hesse- My only crit is that you centered everything. A more dynamic composition would be nice.

Ancient Kitten- nice colors. be careful using pure white. The picture is a little off balance because of the large white area in the top corner.. Tone the white down into a very light bluish gray, and use your strongest highlights on your center of interest.

plaf- excellent tones.. I'm really feeling it. The eye area is just too dark in comapison with the other values. I think I understand the feeling that you wanted to get, but ust limiting the eyes to shadows with no other details might do the trick.

GraphicMaster- Great drawings. The foot is a little off. From the perspective you've created on the foot, you'd have to incorporate a bit more three point perspective to sell the concept.

SABRE- I really love how this picture feels.. It has a very subtle and powerful gesture.

Cybot Floor- funny.. I like it.. You should try limiting your pallete a bit more. You have too many pure color competing for attention.

Hazzard- For all of your frustration or loss of interest, it's a really nice picture.. She's a bit big compared to the elephant though. And I know what you mean about loosing inspiration.

elevenrerequiem- nice colors and I like the armour you've designed. More building of shapes.. You haven't introduced enough contrast to pull make the forms feel 3dimentsional.

Rimshot- Very natural drawing.. I think your pic also might gain from a more limited pallete.

bbwolf- Hey cool!! The color of the mountains in the background is too strong.. Use something more muted to covey atmospheric perspective.

mOrph- good stuff. but you should use sight lines and construction lines to make sure everything is lining up right. Your elephant's eye's are drooping on one side, and his skull is also a little off.

vital-k- i like the armour, but my eysight is already bad, don't make it feel even fuzzier.

Bimdog- I like how you've approached the drawing. Lots of nice soft shades. The background look great too, but I think if you used some of that background color in the shadows of the elephant, it would bring the picture together.

Idiot- Cool concept. You need more darks.. Right now you're only in the middle area of the values.. And the highlights you've put down are to harsh.. Build up to your hightlights slowly, and throw some dark values around to describe the form( the dark colors establish the structure of the picture. at least, that's what I think)

Bretton- nice version two.. I like your previous one more.. I think this one is a bit over worked. And as a rule, try not to use pure white hightlights.. Incorporate some yellow or some blue, or whatever color works.

GK Smith- Great Drawing, your elephant is amazing. Good colors too. I just think the grass is way too green; tone it down a little. and your horizon should fall on the halfway point of the paper; there are very few exceptions for this rule. And only break the rule when you figure out the few exceptions.

Beatnik- I like.. I love your pallette, and the mysterious backbround. If you made the Knight much smaller, you'r elephant would look more menacing..

young paddy1- what canI say cool. I like the concept, and the colors even work with your approach.

dingoegret- nice sketch. You've could have established more depth putting the horizon halfway up the page.

stormy- good start. You've really captured the scale of the elephant.. If you're going to use a black shadow, throw some of that marker on the elephant too.

Johannes- funny concept

Gumdrop- I like it!! my only worry is that you have these beautiful feathery brushstorokes on the elephants body, and then you switch to tight rendered strokes for the elephants armor. Don't detail the body; just use the same treatment for the armour.

Matt Smith- thats a sinister elephant.. Great job.. Where's his shadow.. And what about a horizon line.

eyebooger- I'm lovin your's too. I like the pallete.. A horizon line would be a nice addition, and don't be scared of the grass; just choose a color, let your wacom fly, and give us some real grass.

2kre8- I like this gritty approach.. but same problem as others.. make the woman smaller, and your elephant will look the right size.

Faxter- Good drawing.. the figures are centered and this takes away from the dynamics. I like your shading and values.

Oregano- I love the drawing.. Your colors are everywhere though.. work around one dominant color, and the form and depth will come together better.

ni*- This really original and pretty cool. I like. The elephant could use more dark areas to define the form.. But still great work.

Thrash- I like the solitary elephant drawing a lot. You should push the lights and darks more on your painting.

Iotrez- as usual, great drawing and great concept.

Railboy- sad but true.. my only problem is that there's no focal point.. everything is just little too blury.. if you tighted up the main area you wanted us to focus on, the picture would feel more finished.

rick_hershey- great drawing. super cool.

You know I found that alot of people have had problems with perportions today, me included. I did notice the woman was very much bigger than id wanted. It was a I said that the picture doesnt always turn out how you imagine it. I may actualy redo the whole lot proper and with full effort (ill make a night of it) and post it in the "Its finaly finnished" Section. Dont get your hopes up though (as if) im very lazy and uni starts up in 1 day so time is not on my side. (Plus i live with my girlfriend so time is never on my side :P)

Oh man, Mike. That sucks. I think we've all had something similar happen to us all at one point or another. God knows I have. You've got our sympathies.

What sucks even more is that I *knew* you were going to be into this topic because of your TDome selection. I'm really sorry not to be able to see it.

Damn computers.

I took what riq said into consideration and touched up the background. The low horizan didn't bother me, it made the elephant look larger and now that I moved the horizan up, he doesn't look as large. Here is the new image, let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the feedback everyone. For some reason, my grass is coming up greener on the internet than it does in photoshop. I did tone it down, but it isn't that apparent on this post.

For you guys that are losing your art work, make sure as you work and after you are done creating your work, that you have atleast a second copy stored someplace else, if possible, make 3 or 4. Have one stored on your computer, one or more burned on CD/DVD and one backed up on an external HDD. Make frequent saves, sometimes maybe same it as "image1" and make another "image2". This way, if one file F's up, you won't have to start entirely over from scratch. Everyone seems to learn the hard way when it comes to this. I have lost countless images by not making extra back ups and it sucks hardcore. Especially when you have a project due for someone. Never miss a deadline, that is a killer.

http://www.shawnadomanis.com/dsg/dsg345.jpg

A multitude of great artwork here today.
No time for my average rants today, just a few shouts...

riq - I love the perspective and roughness of the piece and even more that it was done in Illustrator. I use Illustrator every day at work, but not quite like that.
bbwolf - Very nice.
Wednesday - You make me want to let the elephant ride me too... but then I would have to buy his bones from Psycho Jackson!
GK Smith - Very nice first post! Welcome bro.
Gumdrop - Mmmm hay. I love the ancient Chinese style.
Oregano - Oh my... "sans rider" good. He doesn't need the rider.
Thrash - I like the sketch a lot too, but I disagree, the painting is much better.
Iotrez - Your sense of perspective and fantasy is crazy!
rick_hershey - Funny, but well done funny.

GK Smith - Yeah. Painter 8. It's all I use becouse my scanner is... err... ooooolllllllddddd! :(

riq - Good point. I did the elephant first then came back to the rest later, but the 'phant took so long I kinda blagged the guy and the armour at the end.

Hi guys!

I know I'm late on this one. It took me some time to find inspiration :P After 2 hours of intense PS drawin with many undos, I didn't even have the time to add some colors. But you can see the palette I'll use to finish it.
Hope I can post it tomorrow, because it's late in the night. :yawns:

Tell me what you think! Thanks! :btu:
