I'm very excited to announce that I will be having an art show featuring all of the work from my "Sketch of the Day" art show!
Read below for more info.

About the Show

This project began on Jan 1, 2011 with the goal to create a sketch everyday for a year. 365 sketches - drawings, photos, digital paintings, type studies, redesigns, and much more. The idea was not to make perfectly refined, polished work, but to be working and practicing everyday.

For more information about the show and to purchase prints, please visit the event website here: http://henrynahurski.com/sketchoftheday/ (http://henrynahurski.com/sketchoftheday/)

About the Opening

If you're in the Minnesota Twin Cities area, please help me celebrate the completion of my Sketch of the Day project and come out to the opening event at:

Golden's Deli on Jan 14th, 2012 from 6:00-9:00 pm

The opening will have free beer provided by Surly as well as wine and appetizers.

Feel free to invite friends and family, the more the merrier! Visit the Facebook event page and invite them: http://www.facebook.com/events/292475274126290/

For those of you who can't make it, there will be a live stream of the opening available online and the work will be on display throughout January and February, so stop by when you can to check it out!

Parking + Directions

The work will be on display at Golden's Deli in Lowertown at the Northwestern Building 275 East 4th Street, Suite 102, Saint Paul, MN 55101.

Free parking will be available right next to the Northwestern Building at the Farmer's Market in addition to metered street parking.

Special Thanks

A very special thanks to Golden's Deli for hosting the show and displaying the work and to Surly Brewing Co. for sponsoring the show by providing beer for the opening.

Well its been a year since I started this thread, there have been some ups and downs (which you can read about throughout) but I'm happy to say that Sketch of the Day is back for 2011! I'll be posting an image everyday this year, so make sure to check back to see the latest stuff.

I'll be posting these images to my Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/henrynahurski.portfolio) and Deviant Art (http://henrynahurski.deviantart.com/) as well.

I'd love to get some crits on stuff posted here. I'm here to learn, so if you have any tips or advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Henry

Now updated daily!!

It hasn't been all that long since I really started taking the plunge into illustration but I can already see the improvement. Especially in my figures and color. I'm really happy with this 'Sketch of the Day' project I've been doing. It has really helped in a multitude of ways, I definitely recommend it.

Can't wait to see what comes next!

----------------------------

My sketchbook thread for posting everything from sketches to finished work in order to mark my progress in drawing, illustration, digital painting, and developing concepts.

I've had some experience in traditional drawing, design, and art making, but I still have a lot to learn. Some things I'd like to work on are drawing the figure, rending colors and textures, and thinking in "3D".

I'd love to hear any feedback or tips, and as I said, I'm still learning, so I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Sketches using the program "Alchemy".

Cool sketches! "Alchemy", what is it for a program? The ones done with this program has a special flair, I like them :D

Would like to see more from Alchemy. I saw a short video on Youtube where Andrew Jones was using it but he didn't go into detail about it. I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.

HenryNahurski

Alchemy is.. "an open drawing project aimed at exploring how we can sketch, draw, and create on computers in new ways. Alchemy isn’t software for creating finished artwork, but rather a sketching environment that focuses on the absolute initial stage of the creation process. Experimental in nature, Alchemy lets you brainstorm visually to explore an expanded range of ideas and possibilities in a serendipitous way."

I've only just started using it, but I'm really liking the results so far. Basically the program gives you different drawing settings you can experiment with. For example, in my drawings, I used the mirror setting a lot, but they have other cool ones like: mic input, which changes the shapes based on the sound that goes into the microphone, or.. gradient effects or color randomization.. I could go on...

But what really fun is how chaotic everything is, its fun just playing around and seeing what comes out of the chaos. haha.

Visit their their website to download it, its free and tons of fun.

I thought I'd upload some of the drawings I did for a class last semester, as well as some more alchemy sketches.

Very good, the stuff done in Alchemy isn't the greatest but it's still good. Keep up the good work :)

More figure studies including lots of horrible 30-sec gestures (using Posemaniacs) as well as longer figure sketches.

cool figure work

HenryNahurski
January 30th, 2010, 09:30 PM
Haven't updated in awhile because of school starting, but today I say down and did a TON of figure sketching. I did about 80 45sec gesture drawings. I'm really trying to practice not only the figure but adding depth/weight/tension through line quality. (Figures drawn from PoseManiacs references.)

Also, I'm working on a handful of concept paintings right now.. but they're nowhere near completed. They'll be up eventually.., but for now FIGURES, FIGURES, and MORE FIGURES! :D

HenryNahurski
February 5th, 2010, 05:15 PM
OK, here are a few more 45 sec gestures, more Alchemy sketches and my first stab at a still life digital painting.

February 5th, 2010, 05:31 PM
Your drawings are very good, but I notice that in some of your drawings of faces and heads, the proportions seem a bit off or the features are slanting unnaturally. It's most noticeable to me in the skull in the first post and the faces in post 12. Maybe this could be fixed by putting a bit more time into the structural drawing before you start rendering?

Again, good work. Keep it up!

HenryNahurski
February 5th, 2010, 06:08 PM
Thats a good point, I'll make sure to work on that. Thanks for the advice!

Keep churning them out. I'd suggest you downsize the gesture pages, though; at least in future. Their main purpose is so that we know you're still drawing. :rendered:

Yeah, you're right, they're probably not as interesting as the other stuff. But its important for me to do them, I'll keep doing them, but I'll just post them every now and again.

You're doing great, keep doing studies. I really like your stuff using Alchemy, it's very interesting stuff.

OK, so I've got some catching up to do, about 2 months ago I started doing "sketch of the day" both as portfolio promotion and to get extra practice in. Two birds with one stone! Anyways, here I'll post previous sketches and continue to post as I produce them.

Obviously some are better than others, I'd love to hear what you guys think!

I like how you decided to represent your sb. However some advices - study anatomy closely, maybe buy books. When painting digitally flip horizontally your image, and if you penciling, use mirror, to check, if your image is not skewed on one side (never believe your eyes). And keep in mind some rendering tips, like that the light reflects even in the shadow. And keep going man!

Thanks for the tips! I actually just ordered a ton of anatomy books last night and I'm currently taking a figure drawing class, so hopefully I can flesh out (no pun intended) some of my weak spots.

So my portfolio website got hacked a few weeks ago, and I haven't been doing daily posts because I've been scrambling to get something even better back up while balancing school, work, etc. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get everything back up.. but in the mean time, here are some other projects I've been working on.

OK, so, updates! So I know it's been kind of a long time since I posted stuff, its all been because of this stupid site redesign, well, that's done now, and I'm really happy with it.
So time to move on! :D

Figure Drawing
I know I've posted a few figure drawing things here in the past few months, but today I just posted an album of all the work I've been doing this past semester. It's interesting to compare this most frequent work with the figure work at the beginning of this thread.., major improvements! Check out the gallery at: http://henrynahurski.com/2010/12/portfolio/figure-drawing-i

Sketch of the Day
Sketch of the Day is coming back! Starting Jan 1st, I'll be posting daily sketches here, and on my website. I'm really excited about this, in fact, I put a together a massive gallery of all the previous 'Sketch of the Day's I've done. If you're interested, you can check them out at: http://henrynahurski.com/2010/12/notes/back-to-the-drawing-board

In other news, I just installed the trial of Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, gotta say, I'm kinda loving it. It's like a mashup of Photoshop and Alchemy, very cool. Here's a quick sketch I just did with it:

That's all for now! Happy Holidays!!

Nice work man! Really liking the alchemy stuff, i'm a little confused as to what it is still though, I may have to look into it myself. I like the mixture of imagery and the experimentation with hard and soft colouring in each of the images. Also, the plant you posted not long ago is looking very nice :p Keep it up!

Thanks guys!

@kiwigarbage, Thanks, I'm really starting to get the hang of it now, we spent a couple weeks in our figure drawing class only using ink which really helped. I posted more ink gestures on my website at: http://henrynahurski.com/2010/12/portfolio/figure-drawing-i if you're interested.

@Jped2D, Thanks I feel like I'm finally starting to make progress! You should definitely try out Alchemy is free and super fun, you can learn more about it here: http://al.chemy.org/

Hi there!

Wow, what an amazing variety of things! Really great to look through your sketchbook. I feel inspired to continue with my painting right now. Love especially the large man in post 70 and so, accordingly, encourage you to do more lif and figure drawing :-)

Best wishes,

Well the name is meant to stop people from stealing these. I realize they're not masterpieces.. It's to help brand them and build a more cohesive collection, you'll notice I don't put it on any of my other work, only use it for sketch of the day stuff.

Lol, it's still not about people stealing my work. If I was really that worried about it I'd put watermarks all over the images. The reason behind "sketch of the day" is not only to be practicing everyday, but for marketing as well. Almost like an 'advertisement of the day' so that when people see that image with the wordmark, everyday, (I'm not only posting these to conceptart.org) they get the idea that 'Henry Nahurski = Art + Design'.

The eye is ok although it look like the iris has expanded to fill the entire pupil, which is strange....might be what you were going for there tho...
anatomy need work... the pandas are quite good

Ahhh wonderful use of texture, i cant let myself use such loose strokes, any tips? Are there any things i cold be thinking about to display texture in a rough yet clear way like this?

Also its great to see illustrator and artist evolve their typographic skills, just one opinion of mine, helvetica is so over used. Lol. Although very classic.

HenryNahurski
February 10th, 2011, 11:24 AM
Thanks! Hmmm, I'd say that in terms of keeping your lines loose, try working more quickly and allow yourself to make mistakes. For example, you could say, "ok, I'm going to make an image in 2 mins, and I can't use the undo button." Another thing you could try is zooming really far out from the canvas so you can only work in broad motions, and not get hung up on the detail. For texture, hmm, I don't really know. I'd say a big part of it is having the right brush. There are so many out there that are really bad. Finding a good brush and then using it so you find that sweet spot between no texture and having way to much texture where it just turns out as mush. I think you do a good job showing texture with the cross hatching in your pen sketches, perhaps you could try something like that in your digital painting?

As for Helvetica, haha, I agree it's totally overused. Have you see the documentry about Hevetica? Its pretty amazing.

The 360 barcode is a great idea. You should patent it now before they steal it. Haha. Watch out when putting putting your designs on 3d objects, the logo should curve with the can, just looks a little stiff. The birdbath is gorgeous, very stock fantasy piece, which is always great. :D How long did it take? SUBWAAAAAYZOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMBIIIIIIIIIIIIESSSSSSS AAAAAAAAAAAH

Thanks, awesome feedback! I knew something was a little off with the cans but I couldn't figure out what it was. The birdbath piece took maybe 45 mins? Stock fantasy is a nice way of saying cliche, haha, which I'll admit it is. I wasn't super satisfied with how the lighting turned out on that one, its a little too 'bleached' out.

Sketch of the Day 2-23 | Today, while riding the bus, I passed by a Jamba Juice, and I noticed that the logo is a little out dated and tacky. I mean, what's up with those letters connected by the serifs? And the weird offset shadow thing? Long story short, I decided give the redesign a shot. I tried to make this logo sleeker and more readable. I wanted to convey ideas such as fresh, juicy, fun, and vibrant. The individual raindrop shapes that are meant to portray juice, swirl together, much like a blender swirls smoothies, into a sliced fruit shape. The original logo is on the left, my redesign is in the center with some process work on the left.

Sketch of the Day 2-26 | I bought some art supplies today and decided to try sculpting a character with modeling clay. It turned out to be really frustrating. All I could manage to get out of it were large generic shapes that couldn't hold a lot of detail, hence the hooded figure. I made a few touch up afterward in Photoshop including the eyes. I need more practice.

i like the idea of screens decorating a skyscraper with designs, but doesnt an invisible skyscraper defeat the object of having a big skyscraper? also paralax would mean people separated by 170 degrees could both see the same side, with different sky behind, so the screens would need to be directional somehow for the illusion to really work..
good work on the digi paints

March 16th, 2011, 05:20 PM
Haha, yeah I was thinking about that, I guess it would work best on an overcast or completely clear day. But you could also use this far beyond just make the building invisible, like gigantic advertising, a life-size Godzilla, you could even have it fade in and out of being 'invisible'--that would be pretty sweet.
