Hi!~
I've been eyeing CA for a while now and I finally worked up the courage to join and make a sketchbook. I don't think I'm on the same skill level as most of the people here, but I really would like to continue improving my artwork and I thought this would be a nice way to do it! So please critique away on anything you see, I would greatly appreciate it and any help anyone has to offer :)
For tonight all I have are some old unfinished pieces =( I started all of these back last summer some time and never had the will to finish them. Most I just never knew what to do with them, so if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
First off! This was just a random idea that popped into my head one night while I was falling asleep so I doodled it up the next morning on paper and then painted over it in good old potatoshops. Don't know what to do with her :(
890699
Another very random thing I started a long time ago. I was trying to make her look rather disturbing looking what with the eyes and whatnot...I've been staring at it so long though I don't know if it worked! I think she was going to be partially underwater too...If you can call that black stuff water. Uhm...magic water?
890700
This I did with a mouse while I was at my friends school waiting for her to finish some projects~ Her face still bothers me quite a bit.
890702
And finally another picture I did while waiting at my friends school. Different day though! Supposed to be a little girl afraid of something she can't see, but she knows its there. Or...something like that...
890703
Thank you for looking! I'll post something that I've actually done recently soon haha.

Hi DenaeW, welcome to CA.
Your works and skills are very promising will definitely watch over this sketchbook.
And what about finishing those pieces? Don't push them if you don't want to - they will lose some good feeling as it is now.
Work as hard as you can on improving your skills (studies, imaginary stuff etc.) and you'll see what's wrong with them later. Maybe then you'll want to finish them.
Best wishes and good luck with your SB!

I'm likin' these concept pieces -- especially the girl in the black water :) I think adding some highlights in her eyes and maybe some highlights in ripples in the water might help it look like water...
Show us more, plz! :D

Fun ideas in here. The first one looks like the girl is blowing the seeds or petals off of the flower. I'd suggest making the seeds more prominent by detailing, adding some contrast (light seeds against a darker BG?) and perhaps just increasing the quantity. Also try to focus the eyes on the flower/seeds. Right now they appear to be gazing off to the right of it.
The scared girl image would look better if you separated the shadows and really defined the monster one so there's no mistake about it being a big scary monster. Maybe even shifting the light source to the left so that the girls shadow falls behind her and the monster's shadow directly in front of her.
Keep it up!

Kawauchi: Thank you so much! I feel like I still have so much to learn about lighting it's scary....haha. And I completely forgot to subscribe to you! Thanks for reminding me~ :D
Mr. Juicy: Thanks so much for your thoughtful words. :) That's a lot of advice that I will definitely keep in mind.
AmontilladoAg: Thanks! I'll definitely test those ideas out. And I shall try! :>
Traveler: Ah thank you very much for pointing that out! I completely forgot about the dandelion and how...incomplete it was haha. I should atleast clean that up. And I didn't even notice her eyes! Thank you very much for that too :<~~
About the shadow idea I would have never thought about separating the shadows, but that sounds like it would add a lot more of the depth I was looking for in that piece. I will definitely test that out as well. Thanks so much again!
I love this place already! I've been so tired after getting home from work that I haven't had the will to scan new things...I must fix this! I hope to start posting sketches that I've done throughout the day every night atleast :)
For now though...more old art I found! These are some life drawing studies I did last year as well. Oh how I miss life drawing so...
Looking back on these makes me sad...they're so stiff and not full of the flow I really enjoy now :( But oh well. You live and learn right??

Really hate the woman with the profile in this one.
886464
I still kind of like these.

She's (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=886472&d=1264219774) quite nice, I think. :lifedrawing:

Hehe, thanks a lot AmontilladoAg!
My roommate scolded me for not posting up new things since I'm here to improve, and I totally agree with her! So here's something I've been randomly working on and off for a few days. Nothing special, just something random to work on faces since I've been having lots of difficulty with them lately =(

Wanted to try and make it look more painty~
I think I will attempt doing a bunch of these with different colors whenever I don't know what else to do! :D

You have very strong compositional, color-theory, and painting skills! It would be helpful to know what artists you admire and aspire towards. :) I don't know what direction you want to go in. All I can say right now is that whatever direction you've got in mind, it's fabulous.

Ill respond to comments next time when im not so exhausted!
last night i decided to paint myself a self portrait. I did but it came out really horrible, partially because i used painttool sai which I haven't used in a really long time. I also havent done a portrait in a really long time! So! I challenged myself to do atleast one self portrait a night for a week. Im too ashamed of the one from last night but here are the sketches I did tonight :)

I really like the sketches, especially the middle. The composition of middle portrait, the noise is nice ^^
I really wait for more updates and understand your question. Really drawing the realism is a headcache

Excellent start to your sketchbook, sir. Regardless of your feelings on them, I really like your life drawings. I can't pick out anything to suggest improvement on from my experience level, so I'll leave it here.

I adore the middle sketch. I can see wher eyou adjusted things a bit, but we all go back and do that. :P It, though, looks very nice. I'd love to see some fast color or values underneath it....!

Wow you make such great use of colour! I love that you're very bold with shape and colour, this is something I really struggle with. All your coloured pieces have this lovely glow and radiance to them, even the darker pieces, it's really beautiful.
Your sketches are really nice too actually, now that I'm looking at them, I like that all the forms and expressions are really obvious yet you haven't had to shade them or do much cross-hatching to achieve that result.
Will definately be watching this thread more :)

Gisaiagami: Hehe thank you! Yes realism is quite a difficult thing to get down...:(
Hannah.McGill: Thanks a lot! Hmm...there are so many artists that I admire, thats a tough question! Haha. Though I have to say the direction I'd like to go in right now is just get better with realism so that way when I try to do more free-flow work I can bend it as I wish and still have it look right hehe. I would also like to work on lighting and backgrounds which I don't have much courage for...I need to force myself to work on those next!
Traveler: Oh yes! She is a wonderful artist. That's quite a compliment haha thank you! :)
Inle: Thank you so much! That's nice to hear from someone who is much more talented with color~
Kitten Poker: Thanks! :>
MrParker: Thank you! I appreciate anyone's input :D
Iiridellia: Haha thanks! Yeah I was too lazy to touch it up...I just kept finding more and more wrong while working on it...which is usually what happens when I work on portraits. Especially self-portraits! And just for you I colored the middle sketch real quick! :>
OmertA: Thanks a lot!!
zepheenia: Aww thank you so much! :'> That's so nice. I really enjoy coloring and working with expressions especially, so it's nice to hear that they make their way across. I try really hard to bring them out.
mollymillions: Yay! That's good to know, thank you!
FightingSeraph: Thanks! :D Yes, practice practice practice:heart:
Wow that was a lot of comments! ;w; Thanks everyone~
My self portrait for tonight came out horrible again...blah...but I'm posting because I'm trying to keep myself motivated to post everything here, even the crap 8> Its so hard to draw myself...mostly because of my big crooked nose making everything all confusing 8[
903303
And as I said I colored a sketch from last night really quick since Iiridellia was interested~It was fun practice. used a picture i took last night of myself with my webcam for color and shading reference.

Hi dear
I like the color, and ilumination.
I just got a little confused with the shadow in the neck, you may lose that impression so the colors merge. I do not know whether to terminate or merging will leave only strokes
But is a beatifull selfportrait =]

Thanks guyssss~
ugh alright so i very much suck. I totally didn't keep up with that self portrait thing for long. The past couple days have been both rough and busy, thus the lack of updates. So I started over yesterday considering it was monday and figured I'd try again! :D Started another portrait last night but i was having so much fun with it i decided to paint it up a bit and finished it tonight :> Also fixed up the quick color job i did in the last post because I didn't see how sharp the shadows were under the neck. I work on a laptop so the tones are much more subtle then when I look at my pictures from my phone =( so thank you Gisaiagami for pointing that out for me! also changed the lips a bit because it was looking too monkeyish to me.

Great sketchbook! I love your life studies and the colours you use (I specially like the 4th work in your first post :) ). You've got a great grasp on anatomy, composition and you clearly draw a lot. The only thing I'd point out is the lines. Try to have a more confident line and solve things with single strokes, instead of... "petting" the lines, if you know what I mean. It's not really a serious problem of barbed wire line in your case, but I think your sketches could go from very good to very very good if you tackled this. :P Oh, and your self-portraits are great. I never seem to be able to do a decent one. Keep it up!

Ugh...I really just haven't had the time to update here....that and I keep forgetting to @@
I've been really trying to get my portfolio finished so that I can submit it and the deadline is coming up quick. I've been so stressed out lately about it. So I need some quick advice. Is this looking okay? Is there something that needs to be fixed badly or something that clashes? I'm not yet finished with the dandilion but everything else is pretty much as much as I want to work on it.
I have different versions too!
932412
No leaves?
932413
Leaves?
932416
Freckles??
which/what do you like better? im hoping this is an improvement from the last version i posted forever ago :<
also thank you everyone for the comments!! youre all so kind ;; i will respond when i get the time<3

I like the freckles, the leaves in the foreground hide alot of the work on the leaf head, which looks really nice so I don't know if you want to cover it up that much. Is she supposed to be blowing on the dandilion? I'm not sure the lip shape is quite right for that.
On the other hand it's all much better than I can do ^_^

March 17th, 2010, 02:43 AM
love your sketchbooks, great studies and color!
for your image, i like the freckles but that's more of an opinion. i would however, lower the value/contrast for the background, it is a little too bright. making it different value might push ur character off the background.
Kyendo
March 23rd, 2010, 11:33 AM
Personally, I prefer the last version (freckles and leaves). The leaves make it more... involving? I'm not sure this is the word I'm looking for, but... Yeah.

Really like the color and light in this piece and like all your characters...she feels warm and bright!
It seems like her eyes are focussing in front of the dandelion though...giving her just a little cross-eyed look.
Otherwise the one with the freckles works best for me. :)

ariel_medel: Thank you! :> these are some of my favourite colors<3
Jasper Flick: Thank you! I definitely tried that. I might have to play with it more, but thank you for that suggestion~that was a great idea :> Would have never thought of it on my own. And I would love to grasp that as well! I need to work on landscapes moreeee haha.
Jephyr X : Thank you so much! Thats what I was hoping to go for character-wise. Arghh Ive been trying to get her stupid eyes to work but I just cant seem to get them to focus on that dumb dandalion. I'll keep on them though >:\
Hehe I like the freckles the best too! thanks~
Kyendo : Yay! that's the version I liked most as well. I agree with what you say about the lieaves being more involving~That's how I feel about them too. I think they help bring everything together.
phantasy: Thank you! And thank you for pointing that out @_@. I work on a laptop so its difficult for me to know when some of my pictures are too bright or saturated on regular monitors D: So i really appreciate it!
Kitten Poker: Thanks! Yeah i've been trying to work on her lips still :< such a hard position to get right. But I'll keep trying!
PHEW OKAY. I ended up closing this window earlier so I had to retype all those responses again XD. That and the internet kept dying. Life didn't want me to upload these pictures haha. Anyways! I worked a lot more on the previous picture I posted, so hopefull it looks better. I took into account all of the suggestions everyone gave me:heart: Thank you all again for that! Its still not done yet but hopefully its getting better. I also decided I'd post some of the pictures that I'm working on to maybe put into my portfolio, not sure about all of them but yeah! I'd like to know what you all think of them and where I could improve. I'm running out of time ahhh!
942333
Okay worked on the colors a bit, hopefully the greens arent too green, but I'm not sure since I work with a laptop how it might look for you all. Let me know! Didn't get to work on her eyes so they probably still look cross-eyed :\
942349
This is a more recent picture I started. Not really sure where to go with it but I'm looking forward to working with the colors and lighting, not to mention the background! Please give me your opinionsss:heart:
942319
This was actually a VERY old picture that I found and really liked the colors, but god the face was awful! I've been working on trying to fix it up and make it better now that I know what I'm doing...a little more at least XD but the face/ jaw/ chin area is giving me problems especially. I hate the way I used to paint chins! Bleh I dont know...My friend always told me you can't polish a turd :\ I think that may be what I'm trying to do. But we'll see! Here you can look at the old one for lulz and comparison.
942312Guy? Girl? Actually I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be a very feminine guy...thus the adam's apple...>>; guh XD But I turned him into a her :D
942332
Pretty old too~ There was a girl sitting on the rock but she was so ugly! so now I'm just working on the background. I need to work on more landscapes.
942339
942340
I want to add more of a background color to these, but I also want to do something to make them more different from each other...Hmmm.
942334
I painted this lady at work the other day on my lunch break in secret >v>
I'd like to add to it somehow without altering the life drawing too much...
942335
This is my friends dog :> he's a crazy piggy:heart:

Yay another update! I'm trying so hard to get this dumb portfolio finished by this weekend. I'm leaving tuesday to visit my family for a week so I'd like to have this out of the way so I can stop stressing about it @_@
Sooo ive been workin on these pieces and I dont know what I like. Though I finally checked on my other monitor and edited the colors for some pictures, so hopefully theyre not too blinding anymore. I really hate that about laptops. I like my colors better then everyone elses computers! D8
Worked on my self portrait a bit to try and clean it up nicer. Ive been playing with textures a lot the past few days and I like them because they kind of liven the picture up but I dont know if it looks better with or without them. I might have overdone it....lol
952437952438
These are my laptop color versions.
952439952440
These are the other monitor versions.
What looks better?
Also have been working a lot on this picture. I think im getting close to being done just because im getting so tired of looking at it and i dont want to just keep polishing something I don't...really know what I'm polishing at lol. Again though! Textures or no textures?
952441952442
And finally just edited the colors and a few tiny things on this one! Man were the colors REALLY off on this picture. I tried to get them as close to the colors they were on my laptop.
952445
Hopefully it looks a little better? :< sorry guys i didnt realize it was so very GREEN.

I think the other monitors look better, it's less yellow-ish and feels moe pleasant to watch than the laptop ones :)
Jasper Flick
April 11th, 2010, 03:53 AM
The laptop versions are highly saturated. The adjusted ones are a lot better.
See if you can calibrate your displays. It would pay off big time if you can find a Spyder or similar calibration device. Not only can you get your own devices to display things nearly identical, you'll know that other people with well-calibrated devices will see virtually the same image.
It is also important to set the ColorSync profile for all your images (you currently do not for all of them), especially when using a custom color profile for your monitor. For Internet display, always convert the image to the sRGB profile.

Wow! I just kind of disappeared there for some months didn't I? Oh my poor neglected sketchbook...
Well my internet *coughcoughmyneighborsinternetcough* stopped working for a while, but luckily I have sense moved to a much nicer apartment area! And with luck I have found a...connection...to use in the meantime :) During my absence I submitted my portfolio and in fact got accepted to college! I'm so excited, I get to start in a few weeks. In the mean time I've been working on my summer assignment. I have to fill a 100 page sketchbook front and back pages with 2-4 drawings on each page, so I have been to work on that! Haha. For the first half of the sketchbook I'm working from an awesome workbook while the rest of it has to be life drawing. So I figured I could upload some of my favorites from that as well as some personal things I've been working on. Must get back into the habit of uploading everything here! I'm just so lazy with scanning...Bahhh.
Thanks by the way to everyone who commented last! I really appreciate your support~
1041493
Just a concept based off my cat~ (Though she has not the armor, of course :) )
1041497
This was done just as a random experiment. Basically drew one side of a really random design, just whatever came to mind, and then flipped it over to see what it would look like symmetrical. Obviously they got better as I went along and got the hang of it lol. Afterward I then filled them in to see what the silhouettes would look like and then tweaked them from there :> The last one I actually did the silhouette first though and then the design up top.
10415031041508
Was really in the mood to draw something completely different from what I normally draw. Thus this appeared! (on the left) It was fun :) despite how old it is. though I wish I could make the lighting more dynamic. I'd love any pointers!
The one on the right is something i'm working on for my grandma~:)
10415131041531
(Top) Something also for experimentation. just playing with colors and trying to get better at backgrounds, though this is far from being finished. I need to learn how to paint water first...lol.
The one on the bottom is old, but i still like it.
10415161041518
These are pretty old too... The picture on the top anyway. I was just trying to find a style that I feel comfortable with. Still havent found it yet though lol, so more experimenting!
The picture underneath that however is from yesterday and today! I learned a method on how to draw profiles yesterday and I have not been this happy in MONTHS<3 drawing wise anywho. I've been drawing profiles nonstop as a result. Haha. I think they got better the more I got the hang of it. The girl was the first and it went in order to the guy with red hair on the bottom right. (I think the first girl and guy's eyes are too close to their forehead/nose and i just noticed the brown haired guy's ear is GINORMOUS XD)

This was imagined from a very amusing situation I was in...
Critiques on all of these would be greatly appreciated! :'>
I'm just going to go ahead and upload things from my sketchbook in another post for fear of losing all of this in an attempt to add all those pictures too @_@;;

Your colors are fantastic! Good luck in college. The only crit I have is that blonde guy's jacket, shirt, and sleeve make a tangent.

I love your colour work, they're bright but not in a terrible blinding way, you clearly know how to make them work! Good to see all the progress work too, it's always interesting to see how a piece grows and changes, and how the artist get ever more skilled because of it. I'd be curious to see more traditional artwork, but your digital stuff is very strong for sure.
Keep it up!

really nice start of a CA sketchbook and especially nice sketches. Your colour use is pretty awesome too (as many others have said on here). Don't be disheartened at your works so far to do with portraits, I think you have to have that confidence to enjoy posting things on here!

And now for life drawings and lessons! I tried uploading this last night but CA was being retarded and wasn't showing any of my pictures :( Been working out of a workbook for the first half of my sketchbook.

Wow so many ;v; I'm sorry that I don't have the time to thank each and every one of you, but I definitely read them all and I greatly appreciate the time you all put in to view my artwork and to comment. I'm loving all your works, realistic or not.
They have this defined character, and your color work is...perfect.
You inspire me to work harder. :)

chuck18mp: Thank you so much! That's a really nice compliment to hear~I see all these other artists with distinct styles no matter what they're drawing and I've been hoping that one will emerge in my art eventually:heart:
keigo: Thanksss!
Okay so not much to update today. Just some more exercises from my sketchbook. Trying to keep this thing updated more often!

First one was self portraits I did when I first began my sketchbook, second one was portraits I did yesterday :) I still think my self portraits are one of my weakest points right now...as they really don't look anything like me still. The last one is the closest I think, but still not very accurate. One thing that I noticed was different though was it was much easier to do this time around, even if it didn't come out much better. Getting there, just need to practice practice practice!

Had to copy a self portrait Picasso did of himself. Was my first time really using charcoal to finish a piece and despite it being frustrating, it was also a fun learning experience :)
10456961045694
Practice with using different mediums to crosshatch and then a copy of a life drawing picture in the workbook using red pastel.

Just some practice studies I did from photos last night and tonight. Really fun, I want to keep doing these because they taught me a lot.

Love your drawing style. You're really good with the erased highlights. Gives a nice, classical feel to the drawings.

Absolutely loving your use of color. I'd really like to be able to bring that kind of vibrancy into my own art. Your pencil studies are great, too--you could probably punch up the range of values on the Gamecube controllers, but the hand studies and the portraits are superb. Great sketchbook!
