View Full Version : Need help to interpret this

I know this isn't a homework forum but I need some views to re-confirm my guess. This post isn't homework, but a question that needs solving in order to complete the homework. :D
1) Go to Swatch.com
2) When the page loads, you should see a Flash animation of a whitish Swatch watch, blowing out fumes from it's right side. At the other end of the ad is a white ring.
What is this ad supposed to mean? I can't quite understand the relationship between the watch, the fumes and the ring.
Is it trying to say that the sleekness and sexiness of the watch just blows the ring away, and that the ring pales in comparison to the awesomeness of the watch?
That's my guess, but what's everyone's interpretation?
Here's the static ad in case you're lazy to see the animated version:

Thanks! :)

Am I the only one who sees an attempt at eroticism in this ad? Swatch is so sexy it orgasms diamonds...

There's definitely a reference to male orgasm in there... like Tas said. I don't know what exactly they're trying to do with it, but I mean the white clouds look a lot like sperm and if you look closely you can even see a phallic shape in the smoke. Here's a screenshot.

There's a long history of subtle to not so subtle erotic and sexual imagery in advertisement.

I'd too go for a sexy interpretation. The metaphor is quite simply really:
Swatch = status symbol / penis
blowing out white fumes = potency/power/ ejaculation
diamond ring = female accessory / vulva
Freudian conclusion: You buy swatch, you kill your father and get all the pussy.
To distract people from this "dirty mind" interpretation, they put it all in this white/ sterile design - the only thing that could more clean and sterile than this is an iPhone inside a condom.

Whatever the idea was, it does not work for me.
I don't see how some penis shape and ejaculation resemblance makes it erotic or genius
That flash anim looks like a fart cloud.
For me it looks like the designer tried to apply a cool, icy snow theme with some random fume fx effect that supposed to look like a human breath cloud but instead ended up looking like a bukkake wallpaper.

The animation suck but the static picture you took kinda works.
Having seen the animation spoils the static though.
Not having seen the animation at first judging the static picture, the squirty stuff looks more like stylized smoke that fit's the silver/diamond/white theme and it simply ties the style of the whatch to the ring wich it incidently matches somewhat.
But the clip looks amateur, having stuff squirt out of the side dial of a whach like that. What the hell were they thinking? Maybe it's the new Deo Swatch that releases perfume or something, and that thing dangling from the side dial permanently not moving, wtf?

Orgasm? Lol, that's the funkies orgasm I've ever seen then.
It's obviously a criticism to 'black gold' aka oil, bieng one of the major causes for western capitalism and global warming. Therefore the goodwilling WHITE SILVER aka mothers milk is injected. This is actually a parody on the very first advertisment campaign, where a diary farmer 'shat silver', which he fed to his cows every day, causing them to give silver milk.
Unfortunatly the farmer went out of business because this milk was poisunous, causing the death of 90% of the dinosaur population (yes they did have dinosaurs in 923!).
This offcourse caused the kleenex sales to go trough the roof. And the rest is history, like they say.
For me it looks like the designer tried to apply a cool, icy snow theme with some random fume fx effect that supposed to look like a human breath cloud but instead ended up looking like a bukkake wallpaper.
I'm with Randis.

Pieter's never orgasmed under water.
Nice interpretation, though. There needs to be a special level of hell for the people who make advertisements for watches, especially Seiko:
"It's not your hair.
It's not your clothes.
It's not your lipstick.
It's your watch that tells most about who you are.
It's not your shoes.
It's not your car.
It's not your music.
It's your watch that tells most about who you are.
It's not your handbag.
It's not your neighborhood.
It's not your boyfriend.
It's your watch that tells most about who you are."
