Edwin: Heh.. yah... I noticed the Wolverine resemblance, too. I just didn't want to use metallic wings or something... make it more realistic.
Thanks Inferno... I use fashion mags to help, and I've got a drawing book by Barbara Bradley that has some clothing tips, too.
Anyway... here's tonight's work.

February 9th, 2004, 05:53 PM
what do you think about these drawings bone? are they just some doodles or have you really spent some time on them, are they kinda cartoons for paintings (the one with the girl in the box) or studies?
the pencil work is really nice, you've got a nice approach to the figure, the last one with the blue chick, the purple really doesn't do it for me, are you using chalks? if so i'd spray fix what you've got down, then go back into it with another layer of chalks, repeat the process until done..
but yeah man the stuffs really lookin good, hope to see more outta you
bonedog
February 9th, 2004, 10:51 PM
mephisto, fozzy: thanks :)
siskol: the full body ones are simply, "ok... my goal tonight is to come up with one drawing of one character."
If I don't set up limits like then it's hard to accomplish anything. I kinda liked the girl with the twigs/balls in her hair, but I thought it wasn't a very interesting drawing, so I did the thumbnail of the girl in the box to make her more interesting. I think it's got potential so I'm attempting to do a finished portfolio piece, which is the blue one. There will be more colors eventually I think, but not much.
anyway, been busy... works been slow coming :(

i have the budget skull with the vertebrae and i like it, but the vertebrae don't sit right like in the pictured. i would suggest saving 60$ and just getting the budget skull. i think it's good enough. i don't think you'd notice a large difference between that and the "classic" one.

thanks mephisto. it's nice to know that i don't suck as much as i think :) i tried to do a paintover over your demonguy with a stronger lighting pattern. i didn't know if it looked any better than the original, which was dope, so i tossed it. i probably should've posted it anyway.

Wish I coulda seen that paintover. I've been trying to look for ways to improve it, but I'm not quite sure how yet. Im sort of thinking just spending more time on it, more sharp details might help, but I dont know.

mephisto: gdc was alright. i was looking for a job... trying to meet folks, etc. so far no luck, though. for the paintover, i just tried to add more natural lighting... you shaded the forms to give them volume... but i tried to add shadows and directional lighting. came out junky, though :)

Finally. thought you fell off the planet. These hands are freakin nice. You seen bridgemans 100 hands book? The first image reminds of him/Hess. Im gonna pump out 100 hands as soon as I get my hundred heads done. at 230 am (today)I got to number 50. WOOOOT. I think for my hands im gonna get that bridgeman book and copy quite a few of them. I saw some early Frazetta work from when he was a kid and he copied straight from Bridgeman's book too, so I imagine it prolly wont hurt.
I know some kids at 5000ft.com(reno based game developer). I used to work there. They are looking for contract character modelers right now for a new secret project. I will be doing some of this work in the next few weeks. I dont know if you are into it, but send me your samples and I can pass them along with a good word. If you got 3d max 5 or 6 at home, you can work from there.

mephisto: I've got the Bridgman hands book (and all his books)... It's great stuff. I've been studying Hogarth beacuase it's easier to read, though.
I think you've got the right approach, anyway. If you draw 100 of anything you'll get some skills. I've probably done about 40 hands in the past couple weeks and I already see improvement.
Thank you so much for thinking of me for the character modeller :chug:
I've never used max, and I'm not much of a modeller, anyway. I did some hard surface stuff back in college and my skills have trailed off a bit since then.

Dam fine bach of updates! the use of withe hight lights on that
blue markes is really REALLY NICE, I specially like the guy streching on
the fourth page, the stance looks very natural, and the anatomy looks
spot on, your fabric stuidies are very nice as well keep it UP! =)
nickpicks: the feet on fella jumping of the middle of the page
looks flat on the lower body try doing more stuides of feets
and foreshoting on legs form behind.

hey man
long time no post.
your stuff is REALLY really improved and headed in a new direction. i love those watercolor flying environment sketches. they make me smile :bashful:
your figure is still kinda skaky, but its definately better than last i saw. i liked the cat sketch, but i liked the first few drawings because it looked like abstract shapes. that blue girl sketch is really cool too.
good job bone

I like your sketches verry much! One small thing - you sometimes make the legs too smal, and the lower part of the legs even smaller...
About the same problem apears with the arms in some of your sketches..
but.. damm... i do like your stuff!! :bashful:

Maxetormer: Thanks for reply. Glad you liked the sketches. You should try the blue marker sketch... it's just a simplified version of El Coro's technique, and the result looks even better than the scan. I'm definitely weak on both hands and feet but I try and practice everyday to get better.
BlueMech: Heh... I know what you mean. I learned something everyday in the process of making that piece so by the time I was finished I knew 10 times as much as when I started. It's not nearly as bad as trying to learn a program like Maya, though, believe it or not.
Imglue: Hey it's great to hear you see progress :) :) Thanks :)
Icey: Awesome... glad you my sketches. Maxetormer said the same thing about the legs being off... I'll definitely try and watch for it.

whatup Aaron,
Not quite sure what to say man. These pages all look really good. Your figures, I think, are just as strong as mine. You've got the whole thing in, movement and structure is in em' all - I assume you work from models on some of these. That last page with the blue wash was a good one, tho the white light-tones could have been bumped up more. When I do values I usually work all over the range. Build up a mid tone then darken from there, find the whitest point then compensate. Bounce around the scale.
The same can be said about the figure. The way to get proportions right (for me at least) is to never stay in the same place for too long - thats a fig sculpting technique that I try to use in the drawings. Makes you constantly evaluate the sum of the parts and easily change things before they get too built up. Trial and error, correction and compromise, and finding a middle-ground are all things that come to mind. Sounds like weak ideas that artists should never entertain but when you just drew the most awesome elbow and it's 5x bigger than the head something has to be compromised. Which will probably be the well-drawn elbow if it's out of sinc with the rest of the figure. Also- set a standard for the outcome. If the movement of your figure looks weak think hard about why and don't be afraid to erase it and re-draw. The only way to get past existing skill levels is to build on the ones already established. It's not always a bad idea to work something to death in the pursuit of improvement. Usually after allot of hair pulling and eye-gouging over a specific problem you can solve it [whatever it is that gives you difficulty]. Then you understand the mistake you were making previously and hopefully wont make it again.
Well, I typed way too much. I hope it makes sense :)
These are just ideas that go through my head when I think about ways to improve. Translating it to [hopefully helpful] words is a great exercise too, makes you think about exactly what you doing and trying to do.
looking forward to seeing some drawings in person.

Your rendering work is very nice. I loved the batch of studies you posted.
Only suggestion I can make is *not* about drawing more than it is imagination. Try setting around some time in your day to just sit and imagine stuff in your head. Get a *clear* picture and try to hold it there.
As artists I dont think we spend enough time just cultivating the pictures in our mind. If we did, then we wouldnt need reference that much.

I agree with van (man good to see you around btw!) about the bit about imagination, that's a good tip.

Hey Kemp,
Thanks for the reply. I think it's great advice, and I did go back and bump up the value on a few of my drawings and tried to fix a few things here and there. In fact, I don't have that much new stuff because I've spent a lot of time revising older stuff. I've only done life drawing a handful of times in the past couple years, but I used to do a lot back in school. The ironic thing is that I didn't know nearly as much anatomy and construction at the time, but that's life.
Van,
I totally agree... and I'm working on it. In the past I didn't have enough confidence to work from my imagination cuz it always turned out like crap. Now I think my drawings are less crappy and also I'm a bit less critical of myself which helps as well.
Groover,
Glad you see improvement :) I'll work on the imagination stuff.

Hey man, I just got internet today in my new place, so I just got your PM.
You've got a good sense of form, which is always fun to see. The single biggest thing I'd suggest over all else, given your skill level, is to draw more from real life than workshops. Draw people that are moving, not just people that are sitting down or posing. This will give you a sense of reality, and it will help you to draw faster, which is always a plus. I find workshops to be a little overrated after a while in terms of daily use. They're great for touching up your knowledge of anatomy and whatnot, but in terms of really capturing a believable feeling, you can't beat going out to a coffee shop, or the mall, or a bar/club etc.
Great work though, seriously. Peace
-Daniel

cburt: yo cburt. Glad you liked em. Yup, you got the technique correct, except there's no bleed through. I sometimes use a brush and marker dye and put color pencil on top. It also works pretty good to just use a marker and color pencil on top. I guess it depends on how loose or tight you want the finished product to be.

hey bonedog, I wish you'd update more often than you do, I can dig not having time to draw. these compositions are great, you've created a strong dynamic by cropping the face and hands in the first one, really emphasizing the fabric that way. The second one sets a good mood with the glass and her back at the same relative tilt.
Once again, I hope you find time to lay down some lines, you've got some great shit going in here and more people need to see it! Five stars.
