First thing's first, and that's to thank Manley and Jones for running such a great forum ... donno where I'd be without it ...

The last sketchbook was so damn fun that I'm starting another! WOOOOOO! These things are great for motivation.

Also great to send to future clients ;)

So I'm back to join in the fun :chug:

I'll start off with a spread I did for my 'folio ... I'd forgotten how much damn drawing I do... I'm pretty proud of the fact that all these were done since late summer.

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/sammy_spread.jpg

This is a quick marker sketch I did for a demo here at school, it's quite the challeng to have a room of people and professors waching you draw and listening to your techniques.

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/demo1.jpg

And I can't forget the doghouses ... these are the first round of concept sketches, I'll keep posting more as I define a design...

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/doghouses.jpg

I got a chance to sit in on the Fashion Sketching classes... I felt pretty comfortable, I really wanted to at least minor in Fashion... but oh well... I plan to sit in on more classes since they are so fun :)

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/fashionsketches1.jpg

Got inspired by DUNE and did some Fremen sketches :D

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/fremensketches1.jpg

And here's what we did real quck at my digital paint workshop.. painting these ref landscapes are great for exercising your color, pluss it gets ppl comfortable with the basics of using a tablet...

ok... time to get back to sketching.... :chug:

its really nice to see everything together like this

some pieces have a rushed multiply layer paintjob, while a few have more air and atmosphere in them (tdome pic for instance)

i would suggest spending more time on your painting skills
(BTW--when i think how far your painting skills have come in teh last 6 months...whoa!)

your design sensibilities are super duper

THANX DUDES! WOW One post and already 5 stars, you guys make me feel awesome! Hopefully one day future employers will feel the same way! *crosses fangers*

gasmask: Thanx man, you've always been there to coach me on and give advice, I really wish you'd start a sketchbook here with all of us.

Killer Napkins: I'm glad you liked that robot, I was worried that it might come off as 'clichet'.. but it was pure fun to just doodle away and not care about design.

MIKECORRIERO: I suggest to do a spread, it's a great way to step back from all your work, squint your eyes, and swee what you need to work on. And you nailed it... I have NO creatures!! I donno what's wrong with me.. I used to do creatures CONSTANTLY ... I need to start..

treeboy: Dude you'll enjoy SCAD ... keep workin' and learning.. and in your freetime apply what you've learned - fall in love with your art process.

bRyaN: Thanx man, but sometimes it's good for me to not think at all and let my hand do the thinkin' ... really really helps sometimes.

Famboozled: You'd really like Industrial Design ... so so flexible ... so many things to design and invent!!

-The Swift-: Thanx! Want a napkin'!?

ShawnYe: Thank you shawn. You're such a great artist, it always makes me happy that I'm able to inspire you.

spok: I was wonderin' where you was! :D I'm always glad you drop buy, I love your humor, never lose that humor!! You'll be supprised how far it will get you.

Josef K.: Thanx, we all should draw more! Practice Practice Practice!!!

Cocofuppa: Thanx, glad you like the Golems, I need to do more :chug:

bonedog: Thank you, I try and make a good effort to get at least an hour of drawing in a day.

tyboogie: Yes, I'm still trying to get a hold of painting ... trying to find myself in it ... land a nice medium between fast and tight work.

Did this to start off the new Coloring Book Thread... ARRRGGG the PERSPECTIVE ... oh well .. it's just a sketch - gotta try and do better next time...
http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/spiceharvester.jpg

And I got a chance to sit in on more Fashion Classes... it's so helpfull with linework - great to have fun exadurating figures with no influence from Anime exadurations..

February 6th, 2004, 06:15 PM
Sammy I know you are getting alot of comments about how great you are. That you are better than this or that. Let me humble you --you still can't draw leather with markers.

Thats right, I am that guy in Liberty Street Deli that erases your drawing as you draw. Since I don't have a kneadable eraser that stretches across states...

http://www.dylan-snow.com/temp/cropper02b.jpg

...here is a line thru your drawing. Make this spice harvester work now.
(I think The Coloring Book was the wrong place to post it, I am going there next to delete my message.)

February 6th, 2004, 06:47 PM
great start to a new thread! with what you have so far amassed I have no doubts to you getting a job! hopefully you'll hear from lucas soon? your figures are great, I would say that you still need to work on faces though, maybe sit in on a portrait drawing class? oh yeah and the industrial designs are fantastic, I can't believe you're teaching your classmates and teachers how to draw, lol!

Sammy
February 6th, 2004, 11:56 PM
MIKECORRIERO: Sure no prob, next one I do I'll try and scann as I go. I often use reference whenever I'm at home, but most of my vehicles are done while I'm out... there I get to look at cars, buildings, and scaffolding :D

Edwin: Thanx, always glad to inspire peeps to practice. I'm off to go see what you're workin' up in your thread :chug:

K-Nap: Shizzle-Manizzle-Bizzle

dylan: a kneedable eraser that stretches across states... that's actually inspiring.... I can see it floating with tiny baloons supporting it at points... how 'bout a kneedable eraser that has length but no width :hmm: .... I'm confused as to what you want me to do with ... hmm.. you want me to redesign it? I actually liked that you posted it in the color-book... I'd like to see more peeps crop images and experement. I'm gonna have to ask you to not post images here tho, I don't post other peeps lines that I color for the other thread in here... mainly 'cause lots of peeps browse and assume that every image is mine ... you should post a link :bash:

JackalAnubis: Yes, I need very much to step away from machinery and work on my faces ... but nobody actually crits with advice ... ShawnYe tole me I have a habit of elongating noses, so I keep an eye out for that every time... but any advice would be appreciated ... everything else is just my trial and error with reference.

A fun page of thumbs for a rainy day :chug:
http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/stylethumbs.jpg

and I got a little color practice worked up in a speedpaint today...

Just adding how much I've enjoyed all yer threads around here.

That being said, I noticed several of your figurative quickies for the fashion sketches are a wee bit off, you might wanna take a look at those. Bad posing, and in one or two some stretched anatomy.

Sammy
February 8th, 2004, 05:26 AM
I should explain my "Fashion Sketches" ... I'm so bad at explaining...

Fashion Sketches are really quick/gestural and drawn 9 heads tall ... so if they look exadurated/streached.. well that's because they are, the figure is an extra head tall. It's a style I'd like to incorporate in my future costume designs... Like the style Dermot Power had on Episode II costumes. It's a great way to direct focus to the clothing, and it has that 'romantic' 'traditional' touch to it ... for when you aren't designing a character, but rather an outfit.

gasmask: Oh man.. hehe, I've totally forgotten about the 'Finished' section.. I never really felt welcome there since all my work is sketches.

black_lotus: Thanx :chug:

Devilock138: Are you at school here? You should come draw with us on Fridays and Sundays.

rothgar: I guess I get around with those coloring-book threads :D

HugeHarHar: Thanx, markers seem to be my 'glittler"

MrMojo: Thanx :)

Ok another doodle page of thumbs... for no particular purpose.. just to get some styles down..
http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/sketchbook2/stylethumbs2.jpg

I did a design of the 'thopters from DUNE ... love that book... I'm reading it for the first time. Feels really good to do some markers on CANSON paper again, I feel like a true-blue deisnger when I do.

love that nu design you did on the canson paper. as far as faces go here's an ok site with some tips for proportions on heads.
head stoof (http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm)

looking at that last sketch page you did it looks like that nose is a bit too long (elongated =\) and the area between the eyebrows at the top of the nose should be shaded a bit. also I think its cool to elongatet the figures for those fashion sketches, they look gud to me.

Nah Sammy height-wise I agree on making the fashion stuff bigger than life, it's some of the bends at joints the I noticed. Yours is one of the names I look for when I check the site out so it's easy to see how I found the sketchbook. Keep up the great work, and get back to making some of those "generic" flying machines that caught my attention.

Xpressions: Look around online and find a school that offers a good ID program ... ID is very interesting to study ... very hard to describe, very flexible ... Here I go from working on theme-park navigators, to golf-cart, to vending machines, to dog habittats, to organizations, to city planning ... so on and so on ...
Basically it's business for artists. Reserching to find out what people don't know they want yet and developing/inventing it for them. Check it out, it's always inspiring to study.

Hey Sammy,

Love the fremen. I've been kicking around the idea of doing some concept sketches from Dune myself (before I saw your stuff).

Dude, the guy on the lower left... I thought he was seriously hung until I realized it was the padding on the still suit. Gotta watch those angles...

Great work all the way around. Your style rocks and I love your dog houses. You gonna be selling them anytime soon?

Davidskiwan: Most of my work is actually marker and ink... I'd say about 70% of my work is traditionally... mainly 'cause I can do it while walkin' around town.... now if I had a portable lap-top .. the proverbial shit would hit tha fan!

treeboy: And we do so love the wacky hairdoos!

sammy i was curious about what kinds of markers you use. I love the way you employ them so simply but effectively

Sammy
February 21st, 2004, 05:57 AM
Killer Napkins: Thanx dude : )

gasmask: Thanx, the fashion classes really helped me to losen up and focus on the flow of the body, I seem best at gestures 'cause I do it quick and don't focus on the details... I trust my hand and eyes more.

treeboy: I use Prismacolors and Trias. Trias are good for sketching/blocking in a design before you ink, and prismas are good when it comes to shading. I use laserprint paper for drawings other than mechanical and I marker the shade on the opposite side of the page so it pools up.

sorry dudes  more thumbs... just one of those busy weeks you only manage drawing on a napkin or two.

obid619: I came outa the womb drawing it seems... of course I've gotten more seriouse about it in the last years ... but I've always had a pencil/pen in hand. My mom actually likes to tell the story of when I was 4 she took me to the doctor for a checkup. She was curiouse of why I drew so much... she handed me a pencil and all I drew for the doctor was a stupid little stick figure (I wouldn't stop flopping and bouncing off the walls). Then when she was paying at the front desk and I had nothing to do, she says I drew a shark lunging towards the camera in perspective ... she says the doctor was impressed and took the drawing.

Got it, thanks. I may have to try and play with that method a bit myself.

Incidentally Sammy, regarding these thumbs that you've been doing here and in the 'Creative Process' thread, are they still okay for everyone else to play with, or would that be infringing on the project that you, Mike and Ty are working on?

Just wondering because the thread really appeals to me...

treeboy: When you get here take some of John Morris' ID rendering classes, the dude tough me everything I know 'bout markers. He's a nice guy, so if you can't get the class in for another year or two (fundamentals first, hehe) he'll welcome you to sit in on some of his classes for sure.

spok: That Delorian's gonna get worked up soon I feel, I'd like to do some Syd Mead type angles on the mo-fo. Were you born in France? You seem to know english pretty damn well.

Beatnik: Thumbnails are the trick, when you get goin' on them they can be very relaxing. And there's no commitment or dedication with them, just throwin' lines around and working from little mistakes.

Groover McNab: Wow, thanx : ) I'll keep on-a-churnin' so the emails keep-a-commin'

Guges: I just walked in and sat down on some of the classes here at SCAD. The Fashion department over here is very good, but it seems that some of the kids lack inspiration... or they just plain don't try very hard ... The teacher was showing my stuff around to them when we were done ... I was really expecting for the other students to show me up and offer tips. If she's good, and can bust out some gestural drawings she'll blow the competition away.

Ant4d: Thanx :chug:

-The Swift-: Thank you dude : D ... nothing beats an online sketchbook for workin' on your skills.

treeboy: Bob with red hair? Kinda nasaly voice? ... Me thinks't me knows whoom you're talkin' about.

bonedog: I usually research a lot of cattarpillars and other construction equipment to get a feel of what is capable in a large articulation. Go to the bookstore and grab the "Catarpillar Chronicles" book, it helps me a TON. Also look into the engeneering behind hellicopter rotaries... it's amazing that that little joint that you can put your arms around holds up, spins around, and rolls 4 tons of hellicopter. It puts into perspective what our materials are capable of nowdays.

The snowboard robot is awesome, but i like the cropped version more, it feels a bit more more dangerous and claustrophobic. Seeing the mountains and all in the full version gives the impression that theres plenty of room for everybody and that skiing next to a 100 ton robot is quite safe. Itīs still awesome though. I'm amazed how fast you can bust out 10 different versions of a design in a matter of minutes, besides making a trove of ass-kicking artwork I predict a healthy dose of coin in your post-SCAD future. Do they have good game/film industry hook-ups down there?
Once I gradeeate i'm gonna do some bots but I think you have your creatures more than down to say the least.

Thank you for the warm welcome guys :D
you're all such amazing motivation.

steak-tron: The placement office is pretty damn good here, unfortunately most students graduate without taking advantage of it ... and yes they walk away going "It's so HARD to find a job!" .. but they never went down to the placement office and signed in for updates ... they send out a good 4 post a week of internships/jobs/what-not (granted they aren't always games). Schools want to get you hired so they can brag, it's always best to pay a visit to placement offices and let them know you are motivated.
Churning out multiple designs is a good trait I got from ID, my professor John (who taught me all I know about markers) always said "They're not going to hire you to do ONE sketch in the time it takes another artist to do 20."

Thumbnailing's hard to get into but it's worth it, asside from the creative aspects and losening up it's just a good thing to sit down in front of someone and draw 10 designs of their vision.

now that my comps up I got to color :D

metalwinds: I use painter mostly and PS for editing and whatnot. The linework for something tight like that takes about an hour or two (depending on complication) .. and the coloring took about 2 hours.

spok: I'm takin' my delorian reference on vacation with me to work up some thumbs ;)

I love the colors on those. Very, very spiffy work, my friend.

Here's a multi-part question I've been meaning to ask you about your thumbnails: the work we see here, the page compilation of your thumbnails, that's all in ink, right? You might've already answered this, but what kind of pen do you use? Also, do you do any sort of underlying marks or construction lines or anything, or do you just start doodling with your pen until the thumbnail is finished?

Your thumbs look..spotless. Doesn't look like there's a single wasted line. You could take any one of those and color it, no cleanup whatsoever.

Very awesome work. Looking forward to more =D

Rimshot: Grab some markers, ya might as well try. Get a 30% it's prety universal when it comes to sketching.

TheBlasianOne: Perspective can be tough, but it gets very easy and makes a lot of sence once you get used to it. Pour some time into it and see how it comes out. If you can draw a cube you can do perspective : )

spok: Thanx for bin' an awsome fan :chug: I'll make that Delorian damn nice for ya

tyboogie: Thanx :D the background eh? hehe that's called "Sammy learned how to edit his brushes" ... hope it's not to distracting, I tired to at least work in some nice colors.

FuT: Thanx man, I gotta gragidate school and get a job before I can even think about adoption :D

xia: Thanx, but you're really getting good yourself, I like that you've started to experement more with textures. Keep goin' in that direction.

Inpired by Mikes creatures, thanx dude : )

Good news, My friend and I have officially started our "Dune Thesis" so I hope to get some great stuff cranked out for it.

So post will be slim since I don't wanna post my project 'till it's completed. But I'll manage to post what practice I do in my spare time.

MIKECORRIERO: I have you to thank for that concept, I'm happy you like it. It had been a while since I'd done any mammals or 4-chaimbers. It would be great to have a weekend of creature sketchin' with you. 'could get some great ideas pumped out.

kaeruchan: Naw, I haven't graduated yet, but I dropped my minor and I'm taking my last 4 classes this quarter so I can get out in may, then I'll be here in summer. I had to stop the sketch-group, but I plan to get it cranked up in summer, and I try and make it to Norris on sundays when I can.

spok: Damn, I'm jelouse. You're gonna have a freakin' blast, you'd better bring back some damn good sketches!

Icey, LaVeau: Thanx :chug:

tyboogie, MIKECORRIERO: Thanx for the support dudes, both you have helped me on AIM a lot ... I'll be updating you guys on what I'm doin and getting your input.

Xia, Treeboy, 2kre8, killing.people, Kambei: Thanx :chug:

dakoscwash: If you practice you will be good, draw draw draw ... I use a Steadtler Architect pencil for my sketches... around an H2 and I often go over it with a thinner mechanical pencil for darker parts... but in sketches I don't wory too bad 'cause once scanned in you can mess with the values enough to make it look like you've used more than 2 pencils ; P

spok: HEHE, that's awesome good luck up on stage ... don't say 'Macbeth' up there... the theatre kids will drink the blood of your firstborn..

....hmmm... seems that this is my first reply ever without any artwork, guess I'm hardcorin' it into my "Uber - Secret - If I Told You I'd Have To Kill You - If You Have to Ask You'll Never Know - NDA - Thesis' thing... Actually.. It's not that secret.. just wanna show it all in one shabang.
I've never actually focussed so hard on concept-art like this... my artwork here in my sketchbook is just what I get done in my spare time.. but now I actually get to hardcore research into everything! YAY!

wish me luck dudes

dingoegret: A little of both, hell sometimes I donno what the hell I'm doin... just draw random shapes and then see what I'm gonna do, other times I draw basically a projection of what's in my head.... just go to town on paper, designing and drawing in general are a lot like attracting girls - a lot of confidence in what you're doing goes a long way whether or not you have the clearest game-plan.

Thanx for all the luck guys, I'm gonna need it! So much stuff to do!

mostly notes on mechanical aesthetic, creative development, and how we should embrace ADHD in children. Thumbnailing and in general chasing after my creativity is very relaxing.
