Rendering/Shading Portrait-Skin Tutorials?

hello all, I've been looking everywhere for rendering techniques to help with the fact. A huge problem I have with rendering, especially for the face, is that it has a wooden appearance. While my books guide me in proportions, gesture and such, nothing is ever seen for rendering, so does anybody know any techniques on rendering the face? Thanks.

I'm having problems when it comes to skin too. Hope anyone can help. I'm just doing practice paintings from copying nude photos. Hope that can help you too.
