The third leg and axis principle

Alright, if anything gives me more trouble than anything else when drawing characters it is the legs. I realaize that if you draw a straight line fromt he center of the head down to the floor that means SOMETHING. What I am not exactly sure. Is it where one leg should be to have a balanced character or what? If someone could explain that or direct me to a sight that explains it I would appreciate it and owe a debt of gratitude to that person.
