Have any freelance artists crossed over the boarder?

My friends from canada say that they need proof that they currently have a job or they are turned back.

Is this the same for americans? How do you proove you do freelance work?

I've never done freelance, or sold anything becuase i"m a student. But wouldn't a written contract like a email prove it? If you had portraits of other people that you've done. Maybe show them those? Or go get a job at some crappy place, cross the boarder, then quit.

I'm a Canuck freelancer and have never had a problem at the border. Of course these days Canadians get everything short of a body cavity search, but that's got nothing to do with my employment status (and God forbid you're a landed immigrant).
