I really like your style ...dont know what it is, but good work
His left hand and elbow seems a bit wierd cant really explain how to fix it cause im not sure.
The muscle (or what it is) that runs from the ear to the middle of his neck (dont know what its called) is too thik at the bottom i think.
Hope it helps..:D

Cybot Floor
February 3rd, 2004, 08:12 AM
mmmhh - tentacles? though that are flowting energies/water or somethin.
Nice sketch - now gimme colors! ;)
@topic: i have absolutly no idea of atlantean things...
historically its just an old civilisation like the etrusker oder the greeks... until their island sunk into some ocean. now they are all dead...
then theres the disney-version... under-the-sea-hightech-people and that stuff... nothing for me...
btw: a witch doctor is some kind of medicine (wo)man, isnt it?
Gumdrop
February 3rd, 2004, 08:43 AM
Yes, a Witch Doctor is a medicine (wo)man... usually associated with tribes. Their healing powers are more bent towards the spiritual side of things... oh and lots of herbal remedies.
The use of Atlantians makes this a good topic. You can do just about anything... fantasy... sci-fi... historical fantasy. A good topic I hope to tackle later if I have the time.

cybot floor - he's gotta dolphin on his head?
here's mine. his shoulder is kinda disconnected lookin' and the feet/hands....yeah, they stink. practice, practice.
Things I'd change already if there wasn't ink on it. I'd make the snail shell bigger and figure out more detailed streamers. I dunno. Am I the only one that finds this hard? Fun, but hard.

carnifex:
thats funny - my only objection is, that her legs are wrong... ^^
she has extrem knock-knees (x-beine) and she has no stabil stand. take those legs some degress apart - that should solve both problems.
kaptah:
...and it was worth it. brilliant surface effekt.... is that squid there stationary?
edit:
kaptah, if that picture is digital, try adding some more dark water beneath the witchdoctor... could look even better

Cybot Floor- nice hat!
stormy- the hardest thing about doing a concept should be the idea! Drawing hands and feet can be difficult ( I cheated on mine). It helps to develop a simplification of the anatomy though (i.e. triangle = foot) and save the heavy detail for anatomy studies.
Carnifex

update-now she looks as if tripping over the next moment, but what the hell.atleast she's not standing like an anime character anymore(x-form);)

hunger-good one,but i'd leave out the face beside the figure, dimishes the value somehow.

when i said "legs" i ment also her feet *g*
somethin like this... the blue line is her z-axis. as you can see, your lady would just tip over to her left side...
btw: cover her nipples... a lot of amis around... . perhaps some sort of metal stars ;)

I used a limited color pallette on this one and I think it helped me keep everything nice and unified. About 45 min in PS 6.
Excellent water, Kaptah.
Cybot floor - more toothbrush technique?
Clarification: That little circle in the middle of his head is an eye-hole in the mask, not a mouth.

My, it has been a long time since I've posted here... Great work everyone!
My image is more, "ATLantean" than lost city of Atlantean. Being from the southeastern united states, my witch doctor is more of an apothecary, complete with vials of organs, skulls, and ancient books. cobwebs, candles. And it's all over in buckhead georgia, right beside the infamous clubbing scene. Stop by and pick up a soul, mortal.
Character is one part vampire, one part streetwise shaman, one part nosferatu a' la MAX SHREK.

It's coming out of his head/back. I just scribbled it there and it looked neat so I went with it... no real reason. :)
Guggenmaneuver, your stuff sometimes reminds me of a more controlled Quentin Blake (Roald Dahl illustrator).

I had a couple of questions, do most of you use reference for your sketches in this forum? Some of the work I see is sooo good I wonder if it's just pulled from your head.
PS No reference for me... like you couldn't tell:(
Edit: Cybot Floor, thanks for the input, good feed back! I've follow a little of your advice. I hope to get around to coloring this. I'm tempted to pull this into illustrator and kick it's a** but the reason I joined these forums was to take a step back from the computer.

think, its most about creativity.
your creature is fine; poor squiddy ;) - but work out some details on the feet an knees (and genitals) - and u should try to play with the contast in PS after you scanned it. could make a difference.
whats the witch-doctor-aspect in your creation though?

Nice medicine men around here. I´d have two pics matching the masked maniac around the fire and one karibean seawitch, but they´re not from today. Did not peak at others work before starting.
Kaptah: I really dig that pic. That´s one fishhead. Cool
I did this entirely in PS in about 1 1/2 hrs. Yiy, yis I know watch´a gonna say, Zoidberg, but my first image was the famous Gaggle-Leach from Snarf-Quest. Absolutely hilarious roleplay influenced comic from Larry Elmore for dragon magazin. Anyone remember that?? http://www.highlight-comic.de/conceptart/dsg01/dsg_witchdoc1.jpg

GraphicMaster - I didn't use one this time, but most times I use a reference for poses. I'm not very good at drawing the human form yet and it's good practice. I also use reference for textures a lot, like bark or cloth.

Ended up going more with a Shaman type character as opposed to a witch docter.
A lot of good ones today, so I'll just note a few that stand out:
bwolf, I really like your cephlapod character.
Olsen, as always, you rock.
Railboy & Cjay, I like both of yours, but they remind me right off of Atlantis the movie.
Kaptah - I love your character. Good colors.
Silentbrain, I love the colors, but I can't tell what's going on.
Good works all around peoples!

No time for me today, but a real nice turnout.
eyebooger - Welcome. Great first post. I like your style.
silentbrain - Intersting idea. Now what does it do? Fire thunder bolts?
Cybot Floor - I like the pose and the flabby stomach on that. Makes a refreshing change from uber defined six packs. Suits the character.
stormy - Those arms look strange, but I like the details such as the starfish and staff.
Carnifex - Nice mask design.
kaptah - The sunlight effect is awesome. I also like the colour transition on the legs. Sweet design.
Hunger_Artist - Of your different styles, I like this the best. The colours and variation in the gown are great.
cjay - Haha... reminds me of the vegetarian cannables (sp?) from Monkey Island.
Railboy - Really nice design. Love the mask.
Klymestar - Very soft and tranquil looking. Nice pastal colours.
moops - Another pic full of energy from moops.
buz - Hehe... I like that. Real nice pose.
Hesse - Would have liked to see a more original pose, but the colours are nice.
guggenmaneuver - Nice style. Reminds me of one of the artists that used to do those old Fighting Fantasy books. Love the line work on the face.
GraphicMaster - Looks promising. I'd like to see more definition.
OLSEN - Sweet design. I love the detal of the drape (?) around the shoulders and the glasses. His right arm would seem to reach beyond his knees when straight. Intentional?
young paddy1 - Love that fish helmet.
johanson - Nice character and pose. Would like to see it taken further.
Prometheus|ANJ - great pose and muscle brush work as usual. Is that a manta ray on his back? I wanted to do a manta man.
bbwolf - Cute. Very nice effect on the cloak.
Oregano - Man I love that pose. Real great.

bbwolf and johansan - both your pieces are very friendly. made me crack a smile.
oregano - i really like that sketch. thanks for posting the before and after. the pic could've worked for me without the floating geometry and i lose the witch doctor a little bit in the lake. but hey, it's 100x better than i could do. again, i really like her pose.

I went with a more shamanistic design, too. This is the bare ink outline, and I was going to try doing a watercolor wash over it and colored pencils, but I'm really nervous about ruining it so first I'm posting the outline.
Used my new 46-joint spiderman toy for posing reference. Seriously, it's better than a wooden posing doll...

johanson: I love the concept of a wise, learned frog...very cool.
Oregano: The pose is nice, and I like the limited color scheme as well as the fact that he's not in water.

I did another. looking at it on the computer, the arms are too long and the collar bone is too long. I'm just having basic male anatomy problems. I haven't had time to finish it, and there's alot of shading to do yet. I'd also like the effect of light coming down through water.

Ugh. Been way too long since I've even had time to sketch one of these in class... I'll have to try to get back into the rhythm.
She's a bit too cute for a witch doctor, but oh well. I was going for more of an Atlantis before it sunk kind of thing than Atlantis after it sunk. 35 minute pencil sketch during a lecture class.

---------------------------------------------
Iotrez - I love your work man. The lighting is really good, but it is not cast onto the character. It doesn't have the warm light on the creature or it's staff.
SABRE - Jellyfish, the only way to travel. Nice.
Sapphire - Very nice ink work. Clean. Now I have an excuse to buy my son a new Spiderman toy.
Oregano - That light is so dramatic not to mention the pose. My fav.
OLSEN - That is so crazy!
kaptah - I love the shadows.
Railboy - The colors are great. I like the limited color palette. Does the doc's hands look flat? It just looks a bit off.
Silentbrain - I don't know exactly what is going on in this picture. There is not enough contrast to make the character pop.
Eyebooger - I love your sketch work. It's very stylized.

No time to Sketch for this one, but a good topic and very well implimented by most.
OLSEN: Great work again, I like the concept of this piece it has a myterious (planescapelike) feel to it. Which is very Atlantean in my books. The blurring of the background gives the figureand image a good feel of depth too.
eyebooger: It's a good start to DSG, Welcome. My advice in this instance (and not only to you but to all) would be to flip the image in photoshop (horizontally) and then study the form again. It's amazing how viewing your own work while reversed can clearly illustrated your mistakes.
