Hi,
Whenever you post a question about Painter, be sure to include the following, along with enough other detail to let us know what you want:
Painter version (include patch/update number too, if you've installed one),
your OS (Windows or Mac), and version, and
your complete system specs.
First, read your Painter User Guide. Look in the Table of Contents to get an idea of where to find things. If that doesn't tell you enough, and since you're a beginner it often won't, open each chapter and read the section and sub-section titles.
Now you'll have a general idea of where ot find things.
Then beginning at the first chapter and read each chapter thoroughly. Take time to get a general understanding of what it says, and add a Post-it note to any pages you know you'll want to return to later, or use a notebook just for this purpose and write down page numbers.
When you find something that's not clear even after you've read it a second time, post a question here if you need to and explain exactly what it is you don't understand. Also include the chapter name and page number.
Once you do all this, you'll be in much better shape to begin painting.
By all means, play around with Painter's brushes in the meantime. It's not only fun, it's also a good way to learn. Just open a large white Canvas and start at the top of the brush category list, testing each brush variant. Then move to the next brush category and test all of its brush variants. As with reading the User Guide, keep notes when you find a brush variant you liked. You'll be glad you did,
Don't cheat yourself by skipping the step of reading the User Guide! It's a great resource, even if some of it is either difficult to understand or contains errors (there are some errors). You can always ask about those things when you find them.
Always keep the User Guide nearby and refer to it frequently. Even people who've used Painter for many years do this.
I have the Painter 4, Painter 5, Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8 User Guides within arms reach and open them daily when I need to check something... even after using Painter on a daily basis since 1995.
Have fun, and don't push yourself too hard. Painter is a complex program and it takes a long while to learn it well.
Play! :)
