Hi everyone

I'm new to this site.......... I was going through some of the artworks and they are really inspiring........... cant wait to be that good....... my field of intrest is character and creature designing............. it has only been a year since I started drawing seriously and only been 4-5 months since I started digital painting so they might look kind of childish..... I'd be really gratefull if you guys could give me some suggestions to improve my artworks..........

Good start :)
Do human anatomy studies and lots of them. Go look at sketchbooks where people do tons of poses and focus on the figure. It will help tremendously.

I second what UmpaArt said. What resources have you been using to practice anatomy? I'd suggest getting your hands on some decent anatomy books (popular authors include Bridgman and Loomis -- you can use the "search" function to look for threads that suggest others) and going through them. In addition to that, try sketching people you see whenever you have time to and/or search for photo references on the internet (deviantart is a good place) and sketch them. This is what I've been doing thus far to improve my anatomy skills (you can check out my sketchbook by clicking the link in my signature if you'd like to see some examples of Bridgman and photo ref studies). Good luck and keep practicing!

Drawing and Kochi you say? Great! Saw that from Milad's profile page.. Should start a weekly sketch club or something :D heh.. Good to see you've re-started uploading.. The eyes look great, where are you taking classes in anatomy? You're latest updates have improved since when you've started the sketchbook.. Keep going! :)

p.s. the alien skull in the third page looks cool.. since the skin's been drawn over the skull, I got wondering about the creature's eyelids, didn't leave space for those? :P

Thank you Sharon......... I was brought up in Kochi but now I'm doing B.Sc. in animation in Banglore............. so I guess I wont be able to make it to the weekly Sketch club=[
........ as for the skull in 3rd page, I was trying to figure out the skull for a creature with 2 pairs of eyes...........

Hey thanks for the comment on my SB.
You off with some great start here. Good amount of studies, keep doing them. From the last post, I think you should try a full figure gestural studies. As in gesture I mean a quick loose drawing, don't get distracted by the details yet, but try to see the relation between shapes. In my opinion it's a more exciting process than detailed anatomy studies, but still, they both are necessary ;) Go loose and expressive. Don't be scared. Mistakes are experience, they will only make you better. Unfortunately I am not familiar with books concerning that. All i know about gesture drawing is from a book titled "DRAWING: A Contemporary Approach by Teel Sale and Claudia Betti", I don't think it's very popular (a very texty and bulky book :teeth) and i'm sure there are better resources, but I just don't know them. Search gesture drawings in google image, there's tons of example there (I just did that :D).

Keep posting. I'm keeping eyes on this one :)

Hey Gautham thanks so much for visiting my SB. I've enjoyed looking at yours. Looks like you are doing lots of studies which is good. I know when I first started I just copied them without really understanding what I was looking at. Now I spend as much time as it takes to try to understand the shapes and forms I'm drawing comparing it to spheres, cubes and cylinders. This may help you as you progress. I love your imagination for your creatures and characters so you just need to keep at it now. I shall enjoy watching your progress.

@ Ltplissken & Witckrack: I've got 2 months worth gesture drawings but have to sort them out before I can Upload them........... been trying out the 30 second gesture drawing........ and thanks for the comments.=]

@ Marian Rowling & andres333 : thanks for the advice, I usually draw the basic shapes like an oval for torso and cylinders for limbs before I go into details.....

LtPlissken

You are definitely doing the right things,
you just need to do much more out of them.
The proportions and limb size will come to
its right measure after some experience.

This is some Awesome stuff coming along here. i have to say, I admire the effort your putting into learning better anatomy, it's something that everyone has to go through and it can take a long time to become an "expert." Liking the creature designs and the lighting and shdows used in the digital painting of the apple near the top. I also like the torso studies, you can see a lot of thinking behind your drawing. My only suggestion would to do what i'm sure others have said, go outside and draw or just draw from real life reference a little more. Even though eventually you may draw something entirely fictional, you'd be suprised how much of each design is taken from the real word and modified with our imagination. Keep going mate, i'll keep an eye on your sketchbook! :]

BAMeyer
December 23rd, 2010, 11:36 AM
yesssssss, you're working on the right things here just do more of it. Also you've been doing a lot of single body parts but try to combine them all into a "long" figure drawing maybe it doesnt have to be too long just trying getting the forms down with some basic shading. Keep chugging along.

Hey Gautham :) Good to have you back!
The face studies you've done were coming out real well, especially #42.. Your gesture drawings are improving with each post too, these have more volume than the previous ones.. O and here's one more gesture drawing tool, unlike posemaniacs, this uses photos instead of a 3d model..

Keep drawing! You're being watched :oneye:

Great work! I see you're now in Bangalore- why don't you try and join the dudes at PencilJam (http://penciljam.com/blog/) and meetup with them every week if possible for the jam sessions? They're loads of fun, and you get to talk to people who're actually interested in drawing. Used to enjoy going for the sessions when I was at Bangalore, it actually encouraged me to go out and draw. And it was a big break from office work. ;)

hey i like the gestures. some of the gestures have a lot of sense of movement while some are a little stiff.some are a little scribbly. i think you should take a little more time with the gestures rather than rushing it. i think catching forms in less times comes with practice. you are slowly getting there. keep working.. moarrr!

Tried to replicate one of Raphael's paintings. Turned out to be an EPIC FAIL!!!!! The worst work ever. As for the second one, thats Alice Cullen from Twilight series. Did you paint those from real objects or a picture?
Try and get those still life drawings as accurate as you can before you paint them..

Work on more still life paintings buddy, can't tell you enough of how useful they are for later.. With time you'll find that apples have a lot more colours than red.. Like you'll find that they have yellows and greens in them (and watch out for the light/colours reflected off the table or the wall or the bowl or, you get the gist).. Getting good results in traditional painting would take awhile! But its worth it.. Will help you with digi painting.

Oh and for painting, I always painted a thin layer of yellow (most organic substances have yellow, even people :P n leave the white space) on the drawing before applying the other colours over it.. :)

You're doing well, keep up the constant updates!

The iceberg painting looks really good. Just spend a little more time on refining . Drapery are good start, do more. And use more hues and variations of color even though it appears a single color. Do spend time on these, you dont have to hurry. Keep them coming. Water color paintings are coming along nicely ,although its time for you to use all you have learned from anatomy studies on these. That will make them look solid.

Your digitals are getting much better
than your pencil drawings, that is just way too awesome.
Cool direction is where you are heading,
just do more drawings, draw everyday,
and improvement and success is guaranteed.
