Forge I don't think it's confusing at all. I think he just chose to convey a different style which I think is great. Keep em` comin`.

thank you for your replies... by levels do you mean i should contrast the parts that the eye should focus and have the other parts softened?

His Avatar is Christian Bale in Equilibrium.
As for the soldier up top I think its great. Not confusing to me at all. I like the dark shades, and the dark atmosphere. Very cool.

Very sweet style of sketching. I love the headgear, but it takes a while to figure out the lower half of the pic. Lets see some more.

that's fucking sweet
only gripe: face mask seems a bit out of perspective or something, the guards on the left and the right seem to be in the wrong places ... i dunno, kinda nitpicky, i really like the pic, very well done pencil rendering, you're a more patient man than i.

where's the light coming from?
the reason why it's not working is because the basic shapes are all messed up. there are good ideas, but it's loose. keep it simple. did a few quick ps blobs:

it's basics. no matter painting or drawing. i did it in a painterly way for eventual tips if you were to paint it.

anyways, keep the basic shapes in mind and make them apparent. this is where your shading style came short .it's not working with the shapes. there are numerous ways of shading but generally the best would be if the shading went along or perpendicular to the shape (might've seen that if you read lemen's tutorials here -look them up)

you probably just wanted the texture, but didn't keep the values separated enough. i'm writing this for other people who require similar crits and hope they'll see too. sorry if i bored you with the smartass reply, i'm tired and cranky from browsing the forum
cheers

I envy you. Wow great piece. I agree with some on the values a bit, but it morely looks like a suit thats been through some battles which you pulled of quite well. Maybe if you work your shading around that, it will look kick arse.
Im really impressed by your level of craft! keep up the great work.
