Olsen you must really love Franquin´s "Black thoughts" or whatever it is called in english ... here are some pics of it - unfortunately in german: http://www.cafe-boelen.de/dinge/bilder/franquin/franquin.htm
Great piece!

just a Ryan Church-inspired study today, this pic's not really about the chariot. :(

Oh man, I gotta follow up OLSEN?!
awesome funny man XD I wish I could use silouette like that!
edit: made some changes and upped the contrast as per some of the comments made here

slientbrain:
very convincing motion in that scene!
little too bright, though. looks, as if u put a 50% gray transparent layer above all, did you?
so here`s mine for today.

edit: made some improvements: removed a few strokes, and made the colors more harmonic

I'm going to bite the bullett and have a go at those inks today. But first I gotta go do some work. :(
Olsen - That is really sweet. Nice design, style, and plenty of motion.
Silentbrain - Love the perspective on that and sence of motion. I'm not too hot on the box look of the chariots though. Maybe more rounded ones at the front would really add to the sweeping round the corner effect? Hope you come back to it and add more detail. the horses look promising.
CybotFloor - Wow... two of those big brutes to pull such a light chariot? :D The dappled effect looks good on their skin though. Reptilius Imperialis?
Cybot Floor

hey, thats a stonewood chariot an the reptileman wears golden panties!
;)
Also they look like brutes, but you should see them run... *ggg*

cybot floor- I didn't lower the contrast, but it's just my bad habit of not putting enough contrast in my pics. (I tend to have to up the contrast after finishing pics, in the past...musta forgotten) Upped the contrast on mine though, it looks much better I thinks! Thanks!
I dig the textures on your beasts also. And if those wheel spikes do anything like they did in Ben Hur...brrrr! I'm guessing you did that one in painter, so it's probably more difficult to do this, but I'd like to see some of those construction lines erased. Imo, while they add some interesting texture to the beasts' helmets, they kind of clutter their bodies maybe.
Gumdrop- made a few changes like you said. Yeah, I wasn't too hot about the box-shape either, but after spending the 1.5 hour on it, I was ready to call it quits. :D
If you are saying that I BS'd those horses...you are absolutely right. (hiding the horses legs with dust clouds :D )

Well, i had a lot of fun, this is where i was when my markers ran out of ammo. Maybe i'll do more later with my Mr. Standard Boring Pen.

Olsen, man that is psycho.
Iotrez if you read this, thanks for the crit yesterday, you're right about that. Only i realized to late… Thanks for pointing it out, i'd have forgotten about that until now. I think drawing is all about working out those minor flaws.

kaptah: IMHO, the chariot looks as if its going really fast, but your horses look like they are walking / stand still. Here is a picture of some running horses, to give you a better idea of their leg movement.

It does look awsome btw, kudos

Thanks for the kind words and comments. I had fun making it and i´m really glad you liked it. :)
Fipse, i have seen that guys strips before and i can definitly relate to his style. Thanks for the link. (I know enough german to undestand half of it, but a lot was lost in translation.)
Silentbrain and kaptah, there is much good in both your pictures, but what strikes me most is your camera angles, very nice.
Good job all :)

First poster, few day lurker.
Just wanted to say a few things, being my first post on these forms, I'm so happy my friend told me about this site. I'm a graphic designer and spend to much time drawing on the computer and not enough time with a pencil. It's nice to see others work on a daily basic it's really inspiring.
PS feed back is welcome.

Olsen: I diggit.
Silentbrain: I love the lighting and motion. Very well done.
Kapath: I really like yours as well, though the chariot looks a *little* close, like the horses would be clipping their heels on the thing.
Decided I needed to lighten the hell up and go in a different direction for a while.

thx so far, you were right - i made some little improvements... (i hated especially that green)
some crits:
carnifex: cool idea, but theres something wrong with the perspektive. try to draw some 3d-grid and youll see yourself. (i'm no perspektive-champ either, but... you know ;) )
oregano:
wow. its... bright! really like it!
ancient kitten: well... what do we see? two horselike things and a spear? sorry - i'll wait for the colors :)
graphic master: i guess, that eggform in the wheel is why he`s loosing earthcontact? ;)
give us some colors or more shading at least. (the chariot should have an other shade than the bg for example). that picture is worth some more time!
btw - add an axle...

Ok I gave those inks a shot, but had a real hard time with 'em (particularly doing circles) due to a slight lag even on small tips! I have this problem with large oil brushes etc... but tiny ink brushes too?! It would have been easier to stick to oils in the end, but it did bring the problem to light.
Anyway... went for the ceramic pottery style.

I decided to go with a 3D sketch - so here's a showroom shot of the WarChariot 200, preferred by gladiators everywhere. ;)

SilentBrain - Glad you went back to it. Looks very convincing from a distance. The extra colour and detail really brings out the sweet lighting.
Cybot Floor - Gold pants?! They must chaff! :D The background at the top might look better with a bit of colour variation IMHO.
Ancient Kitten - Nice sweeping horses. Interesting style too.
kaptah - Love it. Really dramatic!
Carnifex - What are the blue things? Tubes? Maybe a bit more definition to bring the design out more.
GraphicMaster - I like the angle of the guy on the floor.
Oregano - I like the ornage colour, but I don't think it goes well with the yellow... or maybe that orb thing is throwing me? It's more defined so I seem drawn to it. Nice design though.
young paddy1 - Hehe... I like the bikes.
sparky | emily - Nice to see variation here. The harness looks sweet.

hey all. first post in here. I used a reference, but it was poor (which might account for me giving up on any kind of detail).

Damn! Back to it after 3 days of snowboarding with no net connexion. Very beat up and tired...
Small thumbnail of The Hover Chariot 5000 with Robotic Gladiator Rider — not to get confused with DSG 334: Robot: The Dark Knight.
I think that the frontal view is a little off.
30 Minute HB Pencil sketch, altered hue in Photoshop.

meDrawUC - I love the horse's pose. One thing I don't get is where is the harness connecting to the man? It looks like it's going up his ass. No offense.
moops - That rocks! Love the colors and perspective.
eyebooger - Great concept.
silentbrain - Yeah, definitely a movie still. The sparks and fuzziness of the horse just gives so much emphasis on the gladiators and chariots.
Olsen - Twisted!!
Iotrez - Oh my. This proves the point that a quick sketch can have more dramatics than a 4 hour painting!
sparky | emily - Good lighting and modeling. I have been planning on using 3DSMax to do a DSG before, but haven't yet. You inspire me. One pointer though: the flag looks a tad bit odd. If it were cloth, it would be almost straight down and very droopy. It looks as if it had a wire frame — no pun intended — in it.
Grimlohk - Cool. I love the bunny thing. His left hand looks a little full though. Which resort you work at? Just spent 3 days at Timberline, WV.
Til tomorrow...

HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA, you have no idea how much that made me laugh.
No i just forgot to add another guy. Usually the harness is connected between two horses, in this case it would be between 2 people. However as you can see there is only one. :p

Thanks! Yeah, I know that flag is kinda weird. I didn't feel like working out cloth dynamics on it (hurry up, Lightwave 8 with easy dynamics), and so I just dragged it down a bit by hand. Just imagine there is a slight wind in the showroom. ;)
