Nicky: Thanks! Sometimes I'll try and beef up some of my loose sketches if the shape is interesting enough. There are a few that I'd like to push - like the chick with two swords and the wolf-man-thing, haha. I checked out your SB - niiiiiice comics and lines, really cool Logan!

I really like the second image in post 1, it looks great. Overall you have really nice stuff here, but I think you need to crisp up your cg'd works. The fox head has great eyes and edges but everything inside it looks blurry. Try doing a few details with a hard edged brush over top of it to make it looks more in focus.
I really like that last painting. I hope your planning to color it!
Can't wait to see more.

Abrodos: Thank you for the comments and visit! You're right, I do struggle with stroke and line confidence - always something to work on!
Mokhi: Really nice of you to stop by, thank you. I've always had problems focusing on detail, I seem to go into overwork overdrive often and muddy up my flats real quick like. I'll try and work on crisping up! I checked out your SB and DA page - awesome work!
Well, I couldnt seem to produce anything last night after watching Inglourious Basterds (great flick), so I got some sleep and tried a self portrait early this afternoon. I need to do more studies.

Nicky: Thanks a million!
Hey y'all! Sketched these out on an A4 sized document in Photoshop. Trying to use fewer strokes to define the forms in my head. Some light refference was used for the hands. Moved onto a little comic - I'll work on pushing that to incorporate more of a story (was really diggin' how it was goin').

Here're those crap sketches from yestreday (doodles and studies from ref.) in one post along with a gloomy self portrait for a gloomy me today - some attempt at color again to brighten things up in here.
I love digital painting so much more as Photoshop can be very forgiving and then some, but I've always fought with the fact that it can become such a crutch if I neglect traditional stuffs - got to keep at it! :)

I had a little scribble of a mermaid from a month or so ago that I revisited last night with some amount of vigor. She was too Disney'ish originally, so I deicided to forgo the coconut bra and flowing hair for something... a little different.
Now if only I could swim down there and say hello to these people - I cant swim for shit though. :(

So last night I was thinking about subject matter I used to enjoy drawing when I was a kid in an attempt to spur some creative energy. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came to mind in a jiffy, so I decided to make a visit to the ol' friends - Leo was my favorite.
And what do I do for the poor guy? Place him in the middle of a pack of Foot soldiers! :)
It's trying to be a study in composition right now, but I'd really like the finish it when I can, so any advice would be awesome.
BTW - picked up a copy of Figure Drawing for Dummies, lol, maybe it'll have some good pointers for me (looked interesting enough anyway).
Peace!

nice work on the ninja turtles piece! i think your getting good at the looser sketches, and comps., but i think you should try to push one of your favorite sketches into a finished painting. doing this every once in a while is good, every time i force myself to work on a painting longer than i normally would, i learn tons of new things. then these new techniques can be incorporated into your sketches, and youll be improving steadily.
youve got a good eye for design and are getting better at light and shadow, so just keep pushing yourself, and see where it takes you. keep it up man,

Thx for visiting my sketchbook floyd:) I like whats going on in here dude. Nice studies in value and color. Your proportions are a little off from time to time, but you are steadily improving from the looks of it. Keep up with your normal studies, but throw in some anatomy studies as well. Cranked out a few more pages of studies last night - mostly using Figure Drawing for Dummies as a refference point as I work along with the exercises. Getting some real help with these studies, and I enjoy seeing the knew knowledge rear it's head in my imagination doodles from time to time, but at times I feel a little frustrated - my line confidence is.... ehhh... it just needs serious work and it bugs me. :(
Using a 6B on these if you're wondering...
Need to be patient and just keep going (still trying to stave off using digital tools for a bit - really want to improve my traditional ability and I think it's slowly paying off).

Broke out the 18x24 inch pad today for these photo studies via charcol pencil. Set up a little corner gig by my desk so I can do large studies like these with more ease - not to mention it saves some room in my regular sketchbook. :)

I'd watch out for your rendering.
That said, you're making improvements.
RickyS
January 23rd, 2010, 08:02 PM
I think your doodles are really expressive! However I've noticed you are inconsistent with the placement of facial features. While most of your faces are fine, some are way off. You should watch out for the placement and use guidlines, plus it doesn't hurt to erase. :)
Otherwise my fav is that owl illustration from post #2. Good job!
floydshayvious
January 24th, 2010, 11:01 AM
Ninja: Thank you for another visit. Rendering is one of my (many) problems. Would you mind being more specific as to what you mean?
Ricky: My Aunt would be thrilled that you liked the OwlMonk so much, hehe. Thank you for the crit as well - I need to stop being lazy and think a little more before I place my marks. Sometimes I feel like I've done something wrong if I erase lol - trying to learn more from my glaring mistakes I suppose. Thanks so much for stopping by. :)
___
Doodles and a character attempt. Why did I get stuck on him, where should I go next? :\
RickyS
January 24th, 2010, 02:34 PM
These faces are better. To be honest you shouldn't worry about erasing because you will probably learn more by doing so since you are fixing your mistakes instead of leaving them. Plus if you just leave the mistakes in the preliminary sketches they will multiple as you add more detail, so it's a good idea to eliminate them before they get out of control. Anyway if you watch videos of professional comic artists draw, a lot of them erase entire drawings because they are bothered by a tiny mistake that an avergae person wouldn't be able to spot, but their newer version always turns out better! So use the eraser to your advantage!
With that said if you want a challenge where you don't erase at all I would recommend sketching entirely in pen for a change. I personally enjoy using liquid gel pens, but you can use regular ballpoint pens too. I'm not sure if you heard of it before, but there is a type of drawing called industrial design and those artists use lots of good pen techniques. While it's really difficult to sketch with pen you would probably benefit a lot because you HAVE TO make clean lines and mistakes will become even more obvious. However in the end it's up to you to decide what to do, but hopefully this gives you some ideas.

Ricky: Nice to see ya again! I havnt tried sketching with pen in some time - no doubt I'd be nervous about it, but maybe I should give it a go. One thing's for sure, I hate my lines as they are, so I think sketching in pen would pretty much be a big mess lol. Thanks again. :)
Zhou: Great to have you here, thank you for the encouragement and tips! That advice sounded really Zen! :D I think you're seeing something I'm not, though - I can hardly tell what my aim is half the time. :( Thank you very much - I'll work on those lines as best I can!

Nice updates, the portraits are great, and the environments are even more so:) Try to draw out the structure of the face a little more before going into great detail. Think about how the head is constructed, the best way to figure this out is study your face for a while, looking at what protrudes or dips in. Then try to sketch some heads and remember what you saw. And if it doesn't look quite right, erase and redraw, and repeat when necessary:D Hope it helps. I don't know if it made any sense or not. So call me out if it doesn't lol:)
