lovely idea... I never read the literature but the title alone is very poetic

Cool and interesting topic! Yup, indeed pretty poetic.
Although i would prefered a topic with "new year" or something but anyways , i still like the idea of water of life. Time to start imagining the composition. hmmm

I have an idea... but I need to ask. Is it ok to have a single person in the scene as part of the environment? They're important to my idea.

chaosrocks
December 22nd, 2009, 10:06 PM
as stated inth elast challenge. people are ok as long as the person isn't the central feature.
they are useful for a sense of scale

but as a narrative element they should be avoided

End of the world huh..
I am pretty sure most of us are imagining the end of sea and falls, or the end of a huge cliff and fog...hmmmm.../

chaosrocks
December 23rd, 2009, 10:07 AM
literarily there have been hundreds of literary and artistic depictions of the end of the world. doesn't have to be This world... doesn't even have geographical "end" of the world could be the end of time..... apocalypse... although thats not what the literary reference is. But the inherent dilemma is that the world is round. and therefor world without end. and if you want a world that has an end, you either have to adopt a medieval world view, or take it else where (ie discworld) ... Of course these are the paths my brain takes when I am tacklling something like this.... you can in a sense concider this a WIP :P
It's the holidays, and Im bored.... might even do this one myself

I would urge you to Parse the menaing of the word end, as well as the word "Well" because a well can be a hole with a rim and a bucket etc.. liek a wishig well or it can be a cavernous sink hole, or a glimmering pool.

Hi
Interesting topic. I haven't red the books. But it starts the imagination.
I just had to sit down and draw.

I did some homework and found the original text and where the well is described:

----------------------------------

"So he sprang up and strove with the slumber that still hung about him, and as his eyes cleared he looked down, and saw that the sea, which last night had washed the face of the cliff, had now ebbed far out, and left bare betwixt the billows and the cliff some half mile of black sand, with rocks of the like hue rising out of it here and there. But just below the place where they stood, right up against the cliff, was builded by man's hand of huge stones a garth of pound, the wall whereof was some seven feet high, and the pound within the wall of forty feet space endlong and overthwart; and the said pound was filled with the waters of a spring that came forth from the face of the cliff as they deemed, though from above they might not see the issue thereof; but the water ran seaward from the pound by some way unseen, and made a wide stream through the black sand of the foreshore: but ever the great basin filled somewhat faster than it voided, so that it ran over the lip on all sides, making a thin veil over the huge ashlar-stones of the garth. The day was bright and fair with no wind, save light airs playing about from the westward ort, and all things gleamed and glittered in the sun.

-----

But when they were somewhat calmed of their ecstasy of joy, they made ready to go down by that rocky stair. And first they did off their armour and other gear, and when they were naked they did on the hallowed raiment which they had out of the ark in the House of the Sorceress; and so clad gat them down the rock-hewn stair, Ralph going first, lest there should be any broken place; but naught was amiss with those hard black stones, and they came safely to a level place of the rock, whence they could see the face of the cliff, and how the waters of the Well came gushing forth from a hollow therein in a great swelling wave as clear as glass; and the sun glistened in it and made a foam-bow about its edges. But above the issue of the waters the black rock had been smoothed by man's art, and thereon was graven the Sword and the Bough, and above it these words, to wit:

YE WHO HAVE COME A LONG WAY TO LOOK UPON ME, DRINK OF ME, IF YE DEEM THAT YE BE STRONG
ENOUGH IN DESIRE TO BEAR LENGTH OF DAYS: OR ELSE DRINK NOT; BUT TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND
THE KINDREDS OF THE EARTH HOW YE HAVE SEEN A GREAT MARVEL."

----------------------------------

I hope I can take some creative license on thie, though. I was kinda hoping to make multiple wells, perhaps the water has to be drank in a certain order, or the drinker won't get the benefit of eternal life... kind of like a puzzle.

And yeah, I was gonna go the route of falls, though perhaps if I tried really hard to make them darn cool-looking it'll make up for taking a route people might expect...

I didn't print the text for a reason.
I want people to make their own pictures based on the topic alone.
I was trying not to be too specific

Aaah, thanks Zirngibism. I'd gotten the text from Gutenberg, but hadn't found the description yet, appreciate it =) Might not stick to it's description, but still good to know.

And thanks to chaosrocks for another nifty topic and for the quickness of things being done.

Good luck all.

*edit* And ah, a response in before I even got mine, noted.

Sorry. Chaos-- didn't mean to suppress anyone's creativity!

Just thought it might be a good jumping-off point; just like how people look at photo ref in order to help seed an idea for imaginative stuff.

Okay, here's my first really rough wip... The idea is of having the Well in this isolated place of life, while a barren desert surrounds it and begins to overtake it.

wip - my concept involves a massive well house with the idea of pulling water from the abyss above and the abyss below, hence the two well arms. I find the idea of immortality being the result of "knowing good and evil".

This my first ever attempt at any "[blank] of the week" assignments so be harsh!

After I read the topic, I sat down with the old tablet and sketched. I'll be sure to reference later but I wanted this WIP up for general comments.

watch the perspective on you ellipses. they are tough I usually get them wrong too, helps to build your perspective and then place the ellipse in it.

would love some suggestions on the light play here, I want a real sense of depth of field as well as light contrast. Dark sky, light emitting from water below, and this aged looking mossy walkway... any ref would be very appreciated.

Thanks

misled- i like your first comp. better. for me atleast i get a bit more of a epic feel to it.

any particular reason? the mountains reaching up? yellow sky? bigger tree? less lake/well showing?
all of the above? none of the above. size of the jpeg?
i'll play around with it, see if i can get an epic feel back. still got a ways to go with enviros. thanks for the feedback.

thescala - love the concept, makes me think of the story of Dhul-Qarnayn in the Quran. Some Muslim scholars attribute this name to Alexander the Great, with reference to finding the place where the sun set into a murky bog. That said, love the gear structure.

AndrewLey - beautiful!

yes in fact it does, compositionally if you are gonna use a monochromatic palette you need to be sure that your value composition is working especially well.

i adjusted almost everything, it looks great on my screen, but on my ither monitor it still looks blah. the blue on the right is very bright almost glowing and the tree on the left is detailed. is this coming through to you guys.

this is my first time trying one of these contests, but ill give it a shot. My idea is very early in development, but i wanted to post an early WIP to get everyones input. Ok, heres what i was thinking:

since it pertains to the water of LIFE, i thought africa, where supposedly life originated...then because of africa, i thought of the great pyramids of giza, and what if they were built to hide something? this 'well' perhaps?

i want to stick with my idea but i dont know how to execute it.

any critiques, comments, and questions are greatly appreciated.

When I saw the precis for this week I immediately thought of the old Ballantine Adult Fantasy series covers and decided to do a half-@ssed tribute to the guy who did the ones I loved the most, Gervasio Gallardo. His stuff has been an inspiration to me since (hate to say it... really hate to say it!) before most of you guys were born.

Still needs a load of work, hope I have time to finish this one.
