So all my custom brushes, color sets (for my comic which I KNEW I should've saved but stupidly didn't) are gone, because my workspace corrupt. At first it was popping up an error message, then closing, searched the internet and found out I had to clear my settings. I didn't want to, and then I opened Painter again, praying that it wouldn't give me the error message. Instead, it asked me if I wanted to clear my current workspace, or all. I clicked on current. Everything was gone and set to default.

I blame myself for stupidly not backing up my brushes, color sets, etc. But this is the first time it has happened to me... In like, EVER since I bought the program years ago! :( WTF?

First off, how the hell do workspaces become corrupt? Is there a limit to custom stuff you can make? How can I prevent something like this happening again, if that's possible? Is it? o_o

First, learn how Painter X manages files, in two locations:

The Painter X application/program folder, and

The Painter X User folder

As far as Painter X is concerned, the application/program folder where the program is installed, is read only.

All custom preferences, custom brushes and custom art materials and any other custom items are automatically written by Painter X to the User folder, specifically. into the current Workspace.

Painter X reads from the application/program folder for the default Painter X brush library content but only as it was installed, and reads from the User folder > [Workspace Name] > Brushes folder for any user changes to the default Painter X brush library and for any changes to other brush libraries added by the user.

Take a look at the User folder > [Workspace Name] content and folder and file structure, located here:

Mac - Users > [User Name] > Library > Application Support > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name] > Brushes

Windows - Documents and Settings > [User Name] > Application Data > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name] > Brushes

Windows Vista - Users > [User Name] > AppData > Roaming > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name] > Brushes

Then, when you have your Workspace(s) set up again, create a new folder somewhere outside of the Painter X application/program folder and outside of the Painter X User folder and name it something like Painter X Workspaces Backup.

Inside of Painter X, go to Window > Workspace > Customize Workspace. In the Customize Workspace dialog box, in the upper left corner below the word Workspace, you'll see a drop down list of all of your Workspaces. Choose the one you want to back up, then at the bottom of the dialog box, click Export Workspace, navigate to your new Painter X Workspaces Backup folder, check to make sure the Workspace name is correct, then click the Save button.

Repeat for any other Workspaces you want to back up.

Periodically, back up your Workspaces again, when you've made changes you don't want to lose.

Now, no matter what happens with Painter X, if you need to uninstall and reinstall the program, or just restore the program to its installed state, you'll be able to restore your Workspace(s) by going to the Customize Workspace dialog box, clicking the Import Workspace button, navigating to your Painter X Workspaces Backup folder, highlighting the Workspace, and clicking the Open button.

Take time to learn how to manage Painter X and you'll save yourself a lot of grief.

Exactly like jin mention, search for a carpet that names the same as your work space in the directions he points aout and grab the brushes, save them if you want an extra back up, create a new workspace in painter with a diferent name, search the new carpet and place the brushes on the new brush carpet, then open painter again and save the new workspace.

So Painter X is a guy?

Having one is not the same as being called one XD

It's an insult usually pertaining to males.

It's threads like this one that make me wonder more and more why I bother to take the time to help people in this forum.

Grow up!

Sincerely,

Come on now,

You can't get angry at a topic that had an immature title to begin with. We're just being good natured about it rather than censoring it out. If the person didn't thank you for the help then that is an issue you should take up in private or if you want to state it here directly at that person I suppose you can.

It's hard to honestly look at the topic title and think one would want to look at it as a 'helpful one'

I'm not about to tread ground censoring or editing someone's post at this time with current issues at hand. I mean from all the other non descript postings for Painter issues, I am not about to be an "asshole" (even though I still think it's an insult more relative to males) to someone having a bad Painter day and posted a title that might have been better to have some more thought to it.

Nice try at a lecture, Arshes. Unfortunately, you picked the wrong person to practice on.

Simple good manners and respect won't hurt anyone, including you.

Fortunately, most in the Painter community do have those skills, except for a few spoiled, arrogant and immature children who gather in clumps in a couple of forums and spend their time in useless chatter.

Fed up with this clump,

Erm... I don't know what just happened. I think you're good though.

Don't stress over it. I'm not exactly sure what happened myself. Everyone has their days, I suppose.

I'm gonna close the topic for now though, since your question has been answered.
