View Full Version : February Self-Portrait Thread
February 1st, 2004, 08:24 AM
Not sure if I can start this post or not, but hey, worth a try. Second month already into the new year. Great work so far, everyone.
Here's my contribution.
February 1st, 2004, 11:22 PM
had to go to work - unfinished
February 2nd, 2004, 06:21 AM
Nice way to start the month...
I like how simple and energetic that is Silvrain.
Killing: That top one was looking like it was going to be badass.. I like the background.
trying out more color combos...
good ole' black and white.
February 2nd, 2004, 04:24 PM
Excellent work, people.
This is my first submission to the self-portrait threads. I insisted on stopping once I spent a full hour on it, so I did. I started off with the left eye, and expanded the portrait around that. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep a consistent pose, so I had to do a bit of guesswork once I had the direction of the drawing set down.
February 2nd, 2004, 06:26 PM
i definitely need to do more of these...
February 2nd, 2004, 09:38 PM
and i'm back in business! stupid free web hosting...
here's a sunburned fat version of me to start february :-/
as you can see i'm still a bit poo at this, but practice is fun so i plod onward...
silvrain, i like the comic book style
killing.people- those are great, you use photoshop?
jook- good structure in those ones again, not sure about the green though. but you are improving alot.
jack in box- interresting technique, how did you get that? just a high texture brush?
sone one- thats very nice, really confident looking and i like your use of layering to suggest the hair texture.
February 2nd, 2004, 10:30 PM
Actually, I was using entirely the "dissolve" effect for airbrush in Photoshop 6.0.
What the hell, I figured.
February 2nd, 2004, 11:39 PM
All right i am ready to kick ass this month!!! well here is an ok start for me.... oh and i would appreciate any crits or comments! :D
Ni* - not shabby, the placement of the features are good! keep it up :D
sone_one - i like the way your sp looks it has a interesting style.
JaCkinbOx - not bad. at first i thought you just did a bad scan of your sp....:p
jook - much better looking sp's! you are improving it is great to see you progress. just keep it up!
killing.people - oohh i like the first one alot, to bad you didn't finish it.
Silvrain - your style has a nice flow to it :D
great work everyone this is just the begining.... lets kick the crap out of last month :rambo: :electric:
p.s. apparently some people can't see the images i post from fortunecity so i will add a link. hopefully that helps....
p.p.s if it still is being dumb try refresh a couple of times, and if that still doesn't i dunno all i can say is :wtf:
p.p.p.s -i just moved my stuff to a different host it should work just fine now.... i hope :(
February 2nd, 2004, 11:52 PM
J.Mac - The eyes appear a little far apart, and the neck looks to be a tad too broad.
Your highlighting looks good.
My only other significant suggestion that hits me would be to loosen up on your linework a little. Strong, but a little too controlled, if you take my meaning.
February 3rd, 2004, 12:39 AM
JaCkinbOx - thanks for the comments, you know what i seem to always make that space too big in alot of my sp's. for some reason i never catch it but than again i never really noticed it before.... oh and the reason my lines seem to be that way is b/c i am very analytical when it comes to finding form, but then again i should learn to loosen up :D
February 3rd, 2004, 03:47 AM
I had issues with the colors.. Oh well, at least it's a move out of black and white (or that blue scheme) no matter how wierd it turned out.
February 3rd, 2004, 05:10 AM
Haven't been around for a while...something from open canvas with a mirror. X_X
Silvrain :: Both beautiful -- but i think I like the 2nd more than the first. Maybe it's my love of color <3 The eyes draw me in.
killing.people :: The first one blows me away -- the bg, everything. I'm amazed that it has detail without being -really- detailed.
jook:: Nice play with colors on the first one.
JaCkinbOx :: Great texture, the eyes just pop out.
sone_one :: Love the texture and depth in the face; I'm jealous of the depth -- I feel like I rammed my face into a wall.
Ni* :: Again with the color! I like the little hints of blue/green that hide in there.
J.Mac :: Your sp reminds me of geometry...or that art exercise where they make you pay attention to geometric surfaces on organic items...looks good.
February 3rd, 2004, 09:30 AM
Jmac- i can finally see your image!! nice image, it looks like you started on (your) right eye because that is the most detailed and confident area. other people have mentioned the slight proportion issues, but i think its the viewer's right earphone, it is sitting too high so makes your ear look a bit high. nice to finally get to see your work though ;-)
silvrain- you look drunk or ill :-p maybe drop a bit more of those warm colours into the cheeks to improve your well being..
asbestos- ooo.. a pouty one, nice expression, and you've really got the hang of smooth shading. to give it a bit more depth you could really darken all the shadows, try increasing the contrast in photoshop or painter.
and i am a glutton for punishment, i'll keep at this colour thing untill it works, or at least looks ok
February 3rd, 2004, 11:49 AM
20 minutes... it only took 20 minutes for me to warp my face.... :bash: this became to frustrating for me. some where along the line i start to miss information or distort what i see. the worst part is i don't realize i am doing it at the time becuase i get so into the drawing..... i am not sure what to do about this :xx:
Ni* - thanks and you right so today i worked on the other side more.....
asbestoshazard - you are right about the geometric look :) i do that sometimes by accident b/c i get so into finding the planes. nice sp i like the look of it. th only thing i notice i sthat your eyes seem to be a bit to far apart.
Silvrain - i like that alot it looks very playful. the colours are good, your nose looks like a ball or somehting....or maybe you are secretly a clown
February 3rd, 2004, 01:41 PM
i stubbed my freaking toe on the cinder blocks that support my bed .. pinkie toe got fucked up and bled like a little bitch all teh way home!
February 3rd, 2004, 07:33 PM
LOL, try try again I say. Another failed color.
February 4th, 2004, 12:50 AM
Ballpoint doodle from work...just a -really- quick doodle from work. *emphasizes*
J.Mac :: For sure! Makes me want to try and play with your style.
killing.people :: Interesting medium, did it darken? I'd love to see it again after a little time has passed.
Blackhawk :: Stunning, as per usual -- I wouldn't say failed at all! I love the smeary quality.
February 4th, 2004, 12:55 AM
Hey, three for three. And today was a shitty day too. Only took me about 40 minutes of sketching and mucking around with browns.
blackhawk: man, how you get those colors is beyond me. When you do them, they look natural and realistic.
killing.people: god, that's creepy. But it's a great effect, really makes the picture.
j.mac: I can see improvement in your s/ps. Maybe you could save a copy halfway through the completion progress, and compare it to a finished piece, see the point where you drift. You put in a lot of hard angles with that pencil, maybe try some curves.
azzy: you know I love it. All your work :9
Ni*: Man, that's great. The coloring is awesome.
February 4th, 2004, 04:57 AM
Silvrain: I really like your style. All three of them are cool, but that second one is ultra cool. The red nose just kicked me in the face with its coolness...
asbestoshazard : That first one is really pretty, good job. I like that sketch on the second one, it is kinda funny. I wish I had a job where I could doodle...
Blackhawk: I'd bet it would have turned out well if you went with the flow and just kinda finished it, I thought it was turning out nice... oh well.
killing.people: sorry to hear about your toe.. Way to take one for the team, or something...
J.Mac: I like how you measure everything out and seem pretty precise with things.. It would be cool to see some more finished pieces but I am glad to see you doing them period.. something is better than nothing...
Ni*: I like the colors on that one, orange is actually my fav. Anyways, mabey you should try out a brush with a harder edge.... just a suggestion.
sone_one: I like that one. It is like half stylized, half realistic... I think its the eyes...
THis time I just wanted to have fun with it, not worrying about all the technical stuff like anatomy measurements, value, and perspective.. sometimes you just gotta have fun...
February 4th, 2004, 11:07 AM
this was just me playing around, i got pissed off at painter which keeps crashing with no warning at all... anyone else using painter classic?
not alot to say about this one... not alot to it either
killing.people- wait a few days untill that scabs over and then pick it off, i'm betting there will be a nice new drawing of skin underneath ;-)
BH- the only bad thing about that one is the remaining blocks of white, although it does creat a kind of surreal feeling.
Asbestos- that sketch is great! nice somposition too, i love confident pen work.
Silvrain- thanks for the compliment, nice SP too, you really know the shape of your face and that lets you do nice confident shading. the colour one was better i think, because it was so different. good work.
Jook- thanks for the advice about the hard brush, i conciously try to keep to hard edged brushes but a lack of confidence in my drawing tends to push me towards the forgiving tools like the chalk and charcoal. Also, i cant seem to get rid of the textures on painter classic, very annoying.
oh and i fully agree that this is all about enjoying the process. have fun :-)
February 4th, 2004, 11:15 AM
Felt being alittle more dynamic with this sp, and intern i made myself abreaviate the information on my face which help me out some... any who you know i welcome anythoughts there might be about this.
Ni* - sorry to hear painter crashing onyou like that. the program is known for that though so eh. that looks cool almost like you had stencil and used some spray paint.
jook - thanks :D i was thinking about doing alonger sp. you know like 3 - 6 hour one on toned paper. i figured if i spend that much time on it i am bound to figure soemhtingnew out :D you sp's are so fun you definatelty have the right mind set for these.
silvrain - thank you too. i feel that would be a good idea for me to do. variety is the spice of life :D. i like the colours you used it really gives a mood and ambients to it.
asbestoshazard - yeah :) i like playing with BPP too. i feel more free and less critical of what i am doing. keep them coming!
killing.people - haha that is great!! not the stubbed toae part :p but the blolod usage. reminds me of when Android did somehting like that....... speaking of Andriod where is he.......
BH - i like you colour sp's the have there own appeal that is nice :D just keep pumping them out!
great work everybody this a great way start the month!!!!
p.s. - now that i look at it again i made my body alittle bigger (wider) than it is argh! and i felt pretty good about this one too.
February 4th, 2004, 07:28 PM
hey guys cool stufff
been missing you :)
good to see some familiar faces!
BH- colour is tricky! you are handling it nicely though, keep going!
February 4th, 2004, 08:08 PM
welcome to the blood portrait cult Killing
February 4th, 2004, 08:58 PM
i dont think there are enough swear words in existance to allow me to curse painter classic enough... it just keeps switching off, no warning, no system crash or hanging, it just goes away. Quite often taking alot of work with it, and it often dies as i'm about to click 'save as'.
does anyone else have this problem with painter classic?
I'll do another SP tomorrow, i think in photoshop this time..
February 5th, 2004, 12:30 AM
Ni* i have had that problem with painter before and sometimes. i am not sure how to fix the issue though. i just know that it is not as stable as photoshop.... sorry i couldn't anymore help, but i know your pain.
welcome to the blood portrait cult Killing
lol, he comes running when the scent of blood is in the air....
February 5th, 2004, 06:42 AM
Did this in OpenCanvas between rounds of frag-style fun with some of my best friends. Proportionately off...but I like it or maybe it's just the girly pink talking.
Silvrain :: Love the neutrals <3 And you do the solid shading so well. I love your art, too. :)
jook :: Angle, colors and crazy hair -- all wonderful but I think my favorite part about that one is the mouth: the expression, the sculpt!
J.Mac :: Strange as it seems, i hear a lot of people claim the opposite of BPP...I know I used to have such a latch on my eraser -- now I find pencil almost more difficult to work with.
endregan :: I like the way your neck looks in that pic, particularly the left side -- it'd be great to see more contrast (I'm one to talk >_<) Do you use several pencils or just one?
February 5th, 2004, 07:18 AM
Couldn't let you get one up on me azzy :3 You're my inspiration here.
Didn't feel like anything too serious, so I did an 18-minute caricature. In red. And damn, I don't like red. If it wasn't 3:18 in the morning, I'd do comments. But... yeah. Half asleep.
February 5th, 2004, 07:36 AM
February 5th, 2004, 11:52 AM
Ok so i have a new host for my images yay! hopefully that won't be an issue any more. Ok so today wheni got up i really wanted to a sp even though i was grogy and half asleep for the first attempt. then alittle later i started another one which failed also. the i was think about where i was going wrong with my sps. so i was being very critical and observant on the third sp. and not to much into it i realize what starts to mak ethe picture look off... it isn't the fact that i make the eyes to far apart it is the fact that i make the eys a little less then a quarter smaller than they should be.... ah haaaa!
killing - ooohhhh i like that one it is nice you have nice forms in that sp :D
Silvrain - lol that is a funny caricature :)
asbestoshazard - yes i agree sometimes i am the same way. nice sp it has a mood to it, good work.
endregan - nice to see you around here!! so what have you been up to lately... besides not being here posting your sp's. anywho that is your best yet "imo" ok crit time for you b/c it hink you are ready to move to the next level. ok so you seem to have a pretty good handle on shapes and alittle bit on form, but i feel though that you are not really understanding what you see (i don't really either so this is just somehting i was told :p) keep going with finding the shapes but ithink you should start to look at form and try to investigate why it looks they way it does and how they light falls on your face.... does that make sense or did i just waiste alot of pixels :D
February 5th, 2004, 10:05 PM
February 5th, 2004, 10:20 PM
no time to speak..... sorry...
February 6th, 2004, 12:59 AM
killing.people - how the hell do you do it?? those are awesome.
ni - from what i can tell, you're really improving.. keep it up.. oh, and if painter treats you bad, try photoshop, its working great for me.
jook - you're pretty brave with those colors man. you should branch out and try some different styles, even brush sizes... don't let yourself get bogged down, you know..
here's mine.. just kind of experimenting with different styles and different ways to use color. at first i hated this one, but after looking at it for a while, i like it a lot.
February 6th, 2004, 07:29 AM
I'm not really a fan of this one, I churned it out in Open Canvas while buddy went on a run. I should try...color >_<...
I'll probably fiddle with this more...it's just late and I'd rather frag something.
Silvrain :: I'm going to try to keep up with you this month, I'm going to try. Even if they're just ball point doodles or creepy red cartoons ^^ You're my muse.
killing.people :: Ho-lay. Stunning, just absolutely stunning *__*
J.Mac :: I know it's maybe not as complete as the other two but I love the one on the right.
m0rph :: Expression!
jook :: Nice contrast, I'm enjoying the play of lighting.
elevenrequiem :: Bold shades...is your lip pierced?
February 6th, 2004, 12:18 PM
ok so here is todays which i kind of like. trying to fix my proprtion issues....
asbestoshazard - Thanks :) when you do quick sp's like yours there is alot of energy to them. which is fun.
elevenrequiem - i like how you blocked in the shapes of colour ro give form.
jook - interesting as usual except this time you didn't use any colour, not shabby.
m0rph - welcome, intersting interpitation. also let us now if you want constructive crticism.....
great work people lets keep going strong :D
February 6th, 2004, 02:19 PM
Great job so far this month guys, comments in a bit.
February 6th, 2004, 04:15 PM
J-Mac, your new SP is much better than the ones you were doing, a few days ago.
It's very inspiring to see that much improvement within a short period of time.
Keep it up.
February 6th, 2004, 05:40 PM
JaCkinbOx - thank you for your comment. i appreciate it very much :D
February 6th, 2004, 06:44 PM
i haven't posted in a while, but i've been doing daily sp's. here's feb batch so far.
everyone's doing great. i love your sp killingpeople.
February 6th, 2004, 09:44 PM
*edit* utter shite! any advice is much appreciated, i just looked at this again and it's even worse than i thought....*edit*
i give up!
not entirely but with this one.. i've had enough. i dont like the layering of the photoshop brushes, it takes some getting used to, i think painter can be much more forgiving.
i seem to have little or no patience for these recently, i know more work means better results but when you can see the mistakes repeated, then it is disheartening. Also, i am getting no better at figures so i should practice those too.
anyway here is one for friday night after a few beers;
stormeffex- those are nice again, the one as a clown is really cool, it has alot of character, what is your process for those? ink wash over pencil?
BH- you growing a quiff there? :-p and get back to the colour you big wimp! (but seriously, the concistency of your work here is an inspiration and it would be great to see you push the colour stuff some more)
J.mac- that one is really good, you need to darken the outer planes of the face to push the shape back a bit i think. it would really give form to the portraits. i mean the cheeks and jaw line.
asbestos- the line work around the eyaes is really nice, but watch how far apart your eyes are, maybe just a little suggested detail on the inside edge of each eye would pull them in a little, they look the correct size but just a bit cut of to the inside.
elven- nice colours there, a fer highlights in the eyes and that would really come alive.
jook- your structure has improved a huge amount in the last few months, great progress, watch the nose though, i can't give advice on that because i'm no good at noses, but i think yours shows too much nostril.
February 7th, 2004, 04:10 AM
for some reason I do not like this one at all.. oh well...
Ni: I like how bright your past ones have been...
stormeffex: those are cool.. I really like the clown and the one with the hat bill pointing right at me with your eyes partially covered.. nice colorage.
Blackhawk: cool. for some reason it reminds me of the 50's.
j.Mac: I like seeing pencil on this thread. looking good.. keep em up.
asbestoshazard: I like your style a lot. looking good again.
elevenrequiem: I like it all except for the eyes. I dont know if it a style thing, but I dont see a reason for the pupils to be a different size than each other.. the rest was looking slick though...
February 7th, 2004, 07:40 AM
February 7th, 2004, 02:10 PM
i did what was probably one of my best SPs to date earlier today only to have painter crash and eat it all.... please, no on mention saving regularly, i know i should, but it was enjoy it too much. stupid me!
anyway, here's a quicky for tonight, i really enjoyed this one, i feel much better now:)
February 7th, 2004, 08:29 PM
Ni*: Sucks to hear about your version of painter. I use painter 8 and it works perfect for me... That one is really gritty and cool though. you have a small mouth.
I looked at my last one and hate it even more than before. I tried to exxaggerate the angle and perspective, but it looks stupid. anyways, I did another one to try to redeem myself to myself. I really like this one.
and this I did quickly during class. I did this by memory alone, just to see if I could. As ugly as it is, it kinda looks like me.
February 7th, 2004, 11:11 PM
First time playing with a wacom. C+C are kewl as I obviously suck at this.
All done today O.o
February 8th, 2004, 04:41 AM
Simple...but I like it. I makes up for my last one...I guess it's time to stop using OpenCanvas so much. This one was out of Painter.
J.Mac :: Thanks! This one was a quickie, too. The eyes in your latest are just gorgeous, I like the detail in them.
Blackhawk :: It just floors me how you get so much depth out of so little detail.
stormeffex :: I like the last two in that batch, especially. Is that just water color or ink, too in 020504?
Ni* :: Thanks for the advice. When I stare at my face too long I feel like there's a mile between my eyes. Grr. The color one of yours is nice, there's definition in it but I really like that b/w one, it feels more loose.
jook :: Thank you :) -- Your style is definetly neat, too -- the quick lines, the scribbling. That green one is especially successful.
Silv :: <3
RefriferatorCo :: I remember first playing with my Wacom -- and I wasn't anywhere near as successful as those. :D The second one is great. I love the scribbles, it just makes me want to pull on a line and untangle the whole thing.
February 8th, 2004, 05:23 AM
Azzy reminded me to draw, sooo I did one, even though I just got off work and sat here in my uniform drawing with annoyance. Speaking of which, asbestoshazard, I like the last one you did best out of all the ones I've seen so far. Gorgeous.
Refrigerater: Your style is very, very cool. I like the loose, scribbly style you've got going on. It still gets the point across.
jook: the one of you in green.. I'd have to say that's your best so far. Man, you improved fast. I really like the lighting on that one. Ever consider touching it up to be a real finished piece? I think it'd look awesome.
Ni*: Very awesome style change. I think that worked great.
stormeffex: Dude, that's just fantastic, all the ways you drew yourself. It's a change to see more than just a headshot. They have so much feeling to them.
Blackhawk: Darn you and your near-perfect lighting.
February 8th, 2004, 12:55 PM
another born of a bored skribble, i started with the outline of my head and it didnt work too well untill i started hinting at some details, hence the slightly pissed off expression :-p
the other one is a colour experiment, but the eyes are way too high and i got confused with the colours, as i normally do..
comments later, i'm starving here...
February 8th, 2004, 06:08 PM
Playing more with this style...I like using solids, and I'm loving Painter.
Silv :: Love the earbuds and your hair (as always) but it's really all about your nose in that one :)
Ni* :: I'd say your color experiment went rather well despite any confusion you may have had -- Nice shaping with your jaw and cheek.
February 8th, 2004, 08:14 PM
February 8th, 2004, 08:32 PM
Just a quicky today, but hey I did it. Didn't really think about rules or anything when I did it, just tried to relax and pump it out.
I don't really like the colors, and as usual, my face is lopsided (beginning to think it's simply lopsided in real life... )
February 8th, 2004, 09:42 PM
It's not a -self- portrait...but...
Silvrain <3 You're wonderful, luv.
I'll probably do another soon.
February 9th, 2004, 02:17 AM
hey guys, havent done one of these ina while.
February 9th, 2004, 02:43 AM
this is what copius amounts of caffine and no sleep because of working on my TDome entry have reduced me to...
February 9th, 2004, 06:33 AM
I was really happy with tonights...
Skank: I totally understand. my thunderdome is kicking my ass too. along with school and a job. damn... cool little sketch though. really gives off a tired feeling.
LadyLioness: welcome back. everything seems in close to the right place. looking good there, improvement is always good to see. One thing that LungBug said once (though many others have as well, I just remember him saying it) is to remember to construct what you are drawing. think of it as converting a 3d image into a 2d picture, not as outlining features... great jorb so far though.
asbestoshazard: :D. that one of Silvrain is really cool. you managed to put in the action that he does in his portraits of himself.
Kanimator: it is a bit lopsided... haha, still looks good. your style is unmistakable.
Ni: that color one could have turned out cool had you ran with it. dont give up so easily..
Silvrain: love that one. it is cool how you draw these things...
RefrigeratorCo: That big one is pretty slick. I like where you sere heading with the colors. Be really careful of the neck. you are drawing it way too thin on most of those, especially on the ones with the harder to draw angles...
February 9th, 2004, 07:26 AM
God, I am incredibly tired, it feels like I have mono again.
February 9th, 2004, 02:33 PM
Heh, that's quite a jump start of the month!
Lots of funny SPs :) expressionists on the go!
Ni* - you have some interesting stuff going on there!
asbestoshazard - wouldn't it be fun to try yourself in other styles and images? say, a holliwood star type portret ;)
RefrigeratorCo - fun colors!
be back with more comments soon ;)
February 9th, 2004, 02:45 PM
A rather frustrating attempt today, somehting is quite off. i just can't see it yet....:o
great job everyone! i will comment later tonight.
February 9th, 2004, 09:42 PM
I think i only doo stuff that i find interresting when i don't give a shit about it... meaning i stress too much over it.
just a quick sketch for tonight, i am soooo going to run out of bandwidth before the end of the month...
comments later ( jmac, the distance between the nose and mouth... thats what is wrong...)
February 10th, 2004, 03:33 AM
pencil today... monday, you know.
February 10th, 2004, 04:16 AM
todays is a quick one... had to finish my thunderdome....
February 10th, 2004, 10:09 AM
ok, some comments....
refrigerator- you certainly have the confidence to make the marks... try a bigger brush, getting smaller as you add detail, very lively SPs though.
Asbestos- I think if you can put the tonal contrast of the silvrain portrait into your SPs then you've cracked the B+W ones. but i do like your looser ones, the last couple have been really nice, where you can see the lines around the eyes.
Klev- missed your pic last time, sorry. its cool, though it does look like a bad webcam pic :p but when i saw that it was guache... good work.
kanimator- i think the thing creating the squint looks is that you put (your) left eye too high. nice work though.
ladylioness- get a big bit of soft charcoal and try to really block in the tones. I've found that the bigger the brush or tool i use, the more i can relax and the easier i find it to block in the shapes. I like your confessional notes on your drawings :-)
skank- that one smells of coffee :-p it reminds me of trying to put presentation work together after way too much horribly strong university coffee.
BH- very nice, as ever, it really reeks of tiredness, i like the little stray construction lines too.
Jmac- some really nice higlights on that, but it is the distance between nose and mouth that makes it look odd, if the nose was a little longer it'd be great.
Jook- the colour one is a huge improvement, take care of the highlight running around your jaw.. it kind of flattens that side of the face, maybe darken that down a little, i like the two tone one too (are you wearing eyeliner? after the crossdressing one i'm not sure what to expect from you :-p )
its great to see the improvement in everyone's work, even in the short time i've been taking part in this, well done
February 10th, 2004, 12:12 PM
Crits and anything you notice is always welcomed and appreciated!
jook - the full coloured one that you did is very nice! you should do more of those when you have time :D
Kanimator - cool sp it looks good, the only thing that bothers me alittle is your eyes. to big maybe? good work though
Ni* - thanks for you crits :D i really appreciate it. you just should relax with your sps and have fun with them like jook does. i have a hard time relaxing too, when it comes to colouring anything on the comp i get so bent out of shape. that is why i do pencil sp's on newsprint. none the less you are improving. keep it up!
BH - i don't think i am ever going to get over how simple you can make your lines and yet accomplish so much in a sp :D
asbestoshazard - like the burnt sienna looking sp. it is good i like the warm colours alot :D
skank - you look like a raisin lol... i hope to see you around here again soon!
LadyLioness - not bad at all :) it looks like you are starting to understand proportion, i think you should start to try and understand the forms on your face and study how the light falls on it. good work keep it up!
klev - guache.... i give you props for that, i really don't like guache to much unless it is watered down. which your sp doesn't appear to be. good work, neat colours.
Silvrain - i really like your last one the best so far! great work :D
February 10th, 2004, 02:43 PM
Hmm, eyes too big? I think I just have big eyes. I was trying to do a make a wide eyed expression, kind of got lost halfway throught the drawing.
Blackhawk: I like how you try to optimize your strokes with your work, something I'm always struggling to do.
J.Mak: I like the work you've been doing, but I think you are misplacing the nose. you should make sure everything is lined up, before you refine them (not that I'm the best at that...)
Ni*: I really like the values and colors on that last one. I think it would be better if you filled out the resto of the head.
Jook: that last SP is very creative and interesting. don't know about the pink, though.
February 11th, 2004, 03:55 AM
I'm adicted to these things! It's great practice.
February 11th, 2004, 04:25 AM
Hey guys, thanks fo rhte info, i will write it down and review it tomorrow when i do my portrait. thanks for the tip Ni, i totally forgot i had charcoal and newsprint! ahh duhhh stupid me! i ll get to work on it tomorrow, hoping that i will have time.
btw if you couldnt see the entire note it said "here i think i did all that i was told not to do" meaning i practically ignored or did not read back to the comments of what i was supposed ot be looking for when doing a SP.
February 11th, 2004, 05:10 AM
kanimator: these are addictive, aren't they? I find these as a good way to just experiment, explore, and have a ton fun since they arent for clients, school, or really to impress anybody. your latest isnt lopsided. good job man.
J.Mac: I like how consistant you are with these. you are just imporving at a steady rate. I think that is a good thing. I tomorrow nights should be another full color one I spend a great deal of time on. Thanks for the compliment.
Ni*: haha. thanks for the compliments. no eyeliner. just playing around...
jook: that latest 2 tone one is nifty and all, but the pink under the eyes is stupid looking. knock that off.
tonights is playing around with the seurat brush in Painter.
February 11th, 2004, 09:14 AM
Thanks for the comments guys.
Kanimator - Be careful with your symmetry. No, it isn't that your naturally lopsided, although it is a good copout :D Observe your features more closely, set up some kind of construction form for you to follow as well. A trick I do now to combat the lopsideness is to quickly establish where my eyes, nose, and mouth will be. Nothing extravagant, just dots and lines, but it's done miracles for my symmetry. I've been doing these SP's for over a year and if you go back to when I first started, my eyes and everything were all out of whack. It was very frustrating times.
J. Mac - Thanks, I'm always, struggling with these. I'm trying to keep it simple now to see how well I can do without drawing like a monkey on crack and redrawing areas 50 times over. Now onto yours. Your SP's seem so angular and hard. It's good that your working curved surfaces in straight lines, that's definitely where you start, but soften it up in spots. Basically experiment a bit, you'd be surprised how much you'd learn if you tackled your SP's from another angle.
Ni - I find for myself that drawing pissed off didn't get anything accomplished. I almost broke my tablet a few times by doing that. Keep establishing a solid form, maybe sharpen up the features a bit. Good going so far though, take it a step further though.
AbestosHazard - Thank you. Welcome to the world of Painter, it's a beautiful program. I dig your style.
Silvrain - Great work. Your last one was well done, try hatching everything in the same direction next time and see what kind of effect it gives you.
Jook - Good stuff, nice to see you experimenting a bit, try different angles, poses, and lighting as well. Watch your values as well. Nailing good values will let your SP's sing.
More comments later, it's 7am here and I've been up since 9am yesterday... blech.
February 11th, 2004, 09:32 AM
BH - you got it i will try another angle :D and about that monkey on crack... i think i have that monkey :p
February 11th, 2004, 10:17 AM
BH-- thanks for the feedback, i'm always scared of over working a drawing and i'd like to have a nice spontanious style, but i do agree that i'm being a chicken and not working into these enough.
BTW, that last one is superb, don't touch it. I wish i could do work like that, if i did, it would be on my wall.... some day :-p
Jmac-- changing the angle of view is essential i think, for me it prevents me from making the same mistakes habitually.
stuff to do but i should have something to post tonight...
February 11th, 2004, 11:24 AM
i hope this is a good change in view.... i was having trouble finding the angle of the zygomatic arch on the out side of my face. In one of my classes my teacher offered to make a casting ofour faces... what doyou guys/gals htink of that? should i do it so i can draw it and practice... i am think about it...
Thanks every one for your feed back i really appreciate it :D
BH - that is kind of wierd looking... i like wierd so it looks good to me. good colours :D
Ni* - true true, thanks :D
jook - thanks man! i like how loose and free you are with your sp's. can't wait for your next coloured one :D
Kanimator - aren't we all :D atleast you don't have that damn monkey on your back poking at you  your stuff looks good keep them coming!
February 11th, 2004, 09:16 PM
see, this is what happens when i try to finish something... take a look at my big square head!!
i have real trouble with the farthest side of my face, i never know how to deal with the tones or colours of it compared to the planes that are facing the viewer...
need help here... this one is pish!
comments later, my eyes are too dry now..
February 12th, 2004, 01:37 AM
Ni*: I thought that that one was turning really swell. I wish I had better advise for you. I dont think that there is much of a difference on the far side of the face. It is hard because it all depends on the lighting. Just draw what you see in the mirror I guess, that is what I do.. I hope someone gives you the correct advise because mine is lame.. sorry bud.
J.Mac: I like this one a lot. you handled the forshortning of the eyes very well. I like the side angle approach, you should do more of them...
BH: it is a start...:D Thanks for the comments man.
I was regretably in a hurry, so I couldnt fully finish this the way I wanted, but I still think it is one of my better ones...
February 12th, 2004, 03:11 AM
Playing with chalk in Painter...I need to play with angles more, too. >_<
klev :: Love the solids and contrast.
Kanimator :: That earlier colored one is fabulous, especially the funny smirk on the mouth (reminds me of a PeterChung mouth). I like the tones on the skin.
LadyLioness :: Nice job on the shape of the eyes, it'd be great to see you bring out more contrast and tone in your work -- bringing out the shape of your face and such.
Skank :: Looking good and rough and tired! It screams :D
jook :: It's great to see the experiments, man! The pointlism (?) looks like it was so much fun.
Blackhawk :: Thanks for the kind words -- your stuff is completely inspirational, always looks so good. I'd love to see you finish some color work. Color is beyond me.
J.Mac :: I like the angle, I think it looks good -- and I look forward to seeing more of your playing around with it. Probably one of my favorites of yours so far.
Ni* :: These last two of yours are awesome -- the blue!! The large brushstrokes give a nice effect and the orange highlights on the other one bring a neat look into it.
Phew! I am caught up. XD
February 12th, 2004, 03:47 AM
Spent too much time tonight, but it was worth it, I think.
February 12th, 2004, 06:04 AM
February 12th, 2004, 12:42 PM
killing this was inspired by your last sp :D... i decided to brakeout of my comfort zone :p on this one. it was nerve raking at first but it was enjoyable, i really got into it. sorry about some of my features being off. i kind of lost sight of the big picture, i didn't step back so much.
conte on just 2 pieces of cut up construction paper i found downstairs in the lounge.... :D
killing - awesome sp i like that one alot!!!!
Kanimator - nice colour job! looks soft, your face looks alittle skinny.
asbestoshazard - that one is captivating. your eyes are good. actually the whole thing is good :D
jook - that is good work keep it up!!!
Ni* - you seem to be down lately.... yes i agree with you about that side of the face it is a pain for me aswell. i think youwould really benifit if you did a traditional sp once in awhile. it is easier to observe and investigate what is going on. just keep at it!!!
great work everyone i like what is going on here!!! this is just a thought, but i think everyone here should do a sp in a way that they would not normally do it. you know thinking out side of the box i.e. androids and killings blood sp's. just a thought.......
February 12th, 2004, 01:08 PM
Jmac- ..ach, i'm not really down as such, i'm just at a bit of a flat spot again. and i seem to keep making things quite flat, especially on the far side of my face...
thats a good idea though, about doing an unusual style of portrait, but most people on here try various styles so it may be up to one person to delegate, a bit like homework :-p
anyone want to suggest these?
February 12th, 2004, 08:23 PM
February 12th, 2004, 09:46 PM
and yet another stab at colour... turned out a bit better than my other attempts but still very palid and a bit bland really...
felt better about it though
comments later, good work though
February 13th, 2004, 12:33 AM
asbestoshazard: I like that one. for some reason I imagine that one to look most like you of all of yours, even though I have never seen you.. wierd.
Kanimator: After you posted your picture, I think this one resembles you most. your head is long like that. or it looks like that in the pic at least.
killing: Love the rendering in those...
J.Mac. I like it. would have been cool to see you bring in more of those highlights in there...
Ni: I really like the eyes in that one...
February 13th, 2004, 09:30 PM
Stayed home today, sick as a dog. Was going to go to a party tonight, too...
Something different today.
February 13th, 2004, 11:09 PM
im grey today...
February 14th, 2004, 02:11 PM
He he, with the glasses and the pose, you look like the guy from Half-Life
February 14th, 2004, 05:48 PM
i do dont i....
its a gift....
February 15th, 2004, 06:38 PM
I'll do some comments later, have to head to work.
February 15th, 2004, 07:07 PM
Hmm... ball point pen+illustration pen+white out+ charcoal.
I hate WACOM!!!
February 15th, 2004, 10:44 PM
one of my favorites from you blackhawk.
February 15th, 2004, 10:45 PM
If I wasn't convinced I'd be laughed out of the neighborhood or fired from my jobs, I'd definitely do the Guile hair thing. Haven't done any SP's as of late. I figured workin' on a picture of myself around Valentine's day might've put me in the doghouse.
Refrigerator: Holy, nice job. And... very unique medium. White-Out for highlights. Turned out fantastic, added some great texture!
Blackhawk: I like how you use big chunks of color, especially in this piece. Y'know, you're pretty much perfect at 3/4 views. Ever think of doing a profile shot?
Skank: Very nice, it's all about the small touch of red to the B/W.
Kanimator: You've got a fantastic style. Vaguely cartoon, but with awesome detail and use of color.
jook: Speaking of color, *wow* Painter watercolor, if I'm not mistaken? It looks absolutely fantastic .
Ni*: I'd have to say the one you did in blue is the best one I've seen so far. The sharp dark areas and color usage really work nicely. Your latest one is a good start to realistic color.
killing.people: Just plain amazing.
j.mac: you keep improving. It's really cool to see how you've come along.
Azzy: It's really cool how you keep up the initiative to try new things in your SPs. The last one's different, but still well executed.
Keep up the awesome work everyone!
February 16th, 2004, 03:44 AM
Did this while waiting for <3 to come back from a run again...I felt kinda "pretty" today but meh, this SP doesn't translate that well. XD I like this brush though, I'll have to play with it more.
Kanimator :: Great colors in that second to last -- and it's nice to see some full body portraits come through instead of the usual "shoulders-up" stuff.
killing.people :: Wow...just WOW.
J.Mac :: Construction paper and conte! That sounds like so much fun. Conte used to be my favorite medium until the computer became my cruel mistress.
Ni* :: Lookin' good -- Skin tones will continue to boggle my mind.
jook :: That color is awesome! It looks like someone attacked a box of crayolas and went nuts. :D
Skank :: You look like you're about to kick someone's ass. I like the lighting/shading on your brow.
Blackhawk :: Stunning once again -- I'm inlove with the bold blackand red.
RefrigeratorCo :: More solid mixed media! And again, it looks like so much fun -- especially the white-out.
Silv :: SONIC BOOM! XD
February 16th, 2004, 07:32 AM
other than android's, and im not sure how many of you have been lurking for very long before you started creating your self portraits, but i will ask anyway.
who's self portraits do you miss the most?
i miss daarken's. loved his. i really enjoyed the king of beebop's as well. are you guys out there? any new piercings? any new headphones?
February 16th, 2004, 11:33 AM
i know this one doesn't quite look like me big time :p i woke up this morning and was like i want to do a sp with pen and only makining circular shapes.... so i did htis like 10 minutes after i woke up for about 25 minutes. was fun but i wish i measured more well actually i wished i measured period :D i just dove in and was involved for the rest of the time i spent on it.
killing -your sp's are damn good :D i miss daarkens! wes900! and keyth has been mia for awhile too....
asbestoshazard - looks good i like that sp. it has different feeling than the rest of your other ones :D conte is fun i do agree with you :D
Silvrain - thanks man :D you are ready to mess some one up :p Fight!
RefrigeratorCo - interesting i must say. keep them coming
BH - nice me like the colours!
Skank - are you back? nice sp :D
Kanimator - cool full body included, i like that it is different. keep them coming
It looks like someone attacked a box of crayolas and went nuts. couldn't say it any different than how asbestoshazard did :D
Ni* - that one is good you are starting to put things together nicely keep it up!
p.s. - this one looks really funny to me now that i take a second look at it :fruit: :fruit: :fruit:
p.p.s - i am doing another today but it will be much better i promise...
i broke my promise :o i can't draw the other side of my face to well. i am not sure what it is but when i try it comes out like i haven't been doing sp's for to long. which bothers me b/c i know i can draw some what.....

im really not....
February 16th, 2004, 02:25 PM
here is another attempt... i am determined to figure out this side of my face  now i have to go to a philosophy class thinking about what i not doing correctly in my sp's..... it is like i am doing a self portrait for the first time :o
p.s. - does anyone else have one-side that is easier to draw then the other?
February 16th, 2004, 05:19 PM
i wish things were always this simple :D
February 16th, 2004, 06:26 PM
I think this is the best likeness of me I've done, expecially the sarcastic expression.
Great work everyone. And, Skank... amazing detail! ;)

so thanks....i think... ;)
February 16th, 2004, 08:27 PM
just a messy one in trail version of painter8
I dont know all the brushes so i was kinf of playing, but i dont like how the markers become the darkest colour they touch and eventually become black, no matter what the initial colour is... wierd
anyway, just a skribble, poorly measured.
February 16th, 2004, 10:50 PM
sorry for posting so often...ive been rather uninspired (t dome burnout!)
oh and asbestoshazard , i just noticed in one of your earlier sp's, you have an industrial. you have those in both ears?
my gf's got those..i love em! :chug:
February 16th, 2004, 11:25 PM
Skank :: Nah, just one ear -- but in my most humble opinion, it's got to be one of the most attractive piercings. I know I love mine. :D
February 16th, 2004, 11:28 PM
Wizard of KOZ
February 17th, 2004, 12:30 AM
Two new ones, it's funny how much your life can change in the span of a week. From euphoric bliss, to heart wrenching depression.
February 17th, 2004, 03:48 AM
Haven't done this in a while. Trying for a more loose style. Comments later, gotta go to bed.
February 17th, 2004, 05:38 AM
Groover: I really like those colors. glad to see your face again.
Wizard of KOZ: I like the moods you set in your stuff...
skank: you look like a tough dude. Nicely done.
Ni*: I really like the colors you chose on that last one...
Kanimator: I like it. you should try and experiment a bitmore with color... I'll bet you find some neat things out if you do....
J.Mac: I dont think any side is harder than the other but my toughest area I'd say is the placement, shape, and size of the eyes. Seems easy but they are the toughest to draw for me.
Silvrain: haha. guile is teh shit. I like this one, as I do all of em.
RefrigeratorCo: dont be hatin the wacoms. interesting stylization.
Blackhawk: that is looking nice man.... goodwork...

i kinda janked my tats a bit..but oh well..i had fun.
great job peoples..too tired to comment on em all, but great job
February 17th, 2004, 09:25 AM
Yes thanks, I am allergic to color. See me sneeze onto the canvas when I use it.
Comments when it's not 5:30 am.
February 17th, 2004, 11:51 AM
a little better i guess... still of though.... i will figure it out
Silvrain - i like the colours :D wow you have blue snot  hmmm :D
skank - nice glad to see you are posting once again. your last sp could make a cool poster if it was cleaned up and played with a little.
jook - eyes yes that could be my issue to aswell... how do you start out your sp's? maybe there could be somehting different that youcould do to help? i don't know just thinking... anyways that is a good sp i like when youdo those they come out very nice. the lips seem to not be in perspective with the rest of the head. keep it up
Groover McNab - hello my friend glad to see your face around here :D good start with being loose, keep them coming!
Wizard of KOZ - you style is so interesting too. i just like the look that you work has... i can't explain it but they have an appeal that attracts me like a mosquito to a bug zapper :electric:
Ni* - interesting colours very warm looking, just play with it and you will have fun with all the brushes and features :D
Kanimator - i like the expression on that one it looks good :) i am going to start making expressions to once i figure out the other side of my face :p if i figure it out... kepp it up!
nice work everyone! the improvement of everyone is just great youcan see the progress already :D
February 17th, 2004, 03:09 PM
EDIT: meant to say J.Mac is steadily improving, not me :P
Comment time. Had to get caught up with viewing all the work. Pretty good stuff all.
J.Mac - Thanks. You are steadily improving as always. I think you might be getting caught up in the small details and sometimes the alignment gets a little off. Just some friendly advice, I have the same problem when I do mine.
Killing - Those last two are badass. I've been too much of a wuss to try out textures.
BH - Great stuff as always
Asbestos - I really like the reddish monotone one. Great style.
Ni* - That blue one looks very cool. Is that pastel/sponges?
Everyone else, good job, everyone seems to be updating regularly. Damn, I need to get my act together...
February 18th, 2004, 11:34 AM
was a quick characature type thing. Suprisingly it actually looks a bit like me.
um.. i was in a funny mood...
February 18th, 2004, 11:54 AM
the first attempt kind of bombed... and i am happier with the second one i used the sargent method for portrait drawing/painting
Elmo Lester - nice sp's i like the newest one it looks fun :D keep them coming!
Groover Mcnab - Thanks :D what yous ay would be true. i forget to step back and see the image as whole sometimes  we all know what happens when you neglect to step back and see your work as whole and how things relate to each other... well i do atleast :p
February 18th, 2004, 12:34 PM
Just thought I'd join in on the fun. Did this last night. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.
February 18th, 2004, 12:56 PM
punched out another one...now i seriously have to run to class
samwell - that looks really cool what did youuse to create it it?
February 18th, 2004, 01:45 PM
just a quick one today, after a few failed attempts.. this one is a little different, but i still cant quite... get it!
using big brushes is a great help though.
i have to rush off now so comments will have to wait, sorry
February 18th, 2004, 06:13 PM
samwell - great self portrait. i especially like the lighting and perspective. nice impasto too. how large is the original?
February 19th, 2004, 01:57 AM
going for something a bit different tonight...
Ni... that most recent one is one of my favs from you. I really like the colors...
J.Mac. THat most recent one is looking nice, though the mouth is a bit off centered or something... that one with crap written on the forhead was turning out nice as well what was wrong with it? and I will show a step-by-step on how I do those color sp's soon, mabey to learn from advise.. mabey to teach.. probably a bit of both..
samwell... I like that very much so. love the rendering and colors. do more... just for me...
elmo... that bottom one is really nice. the designs are cool looking...
Silvrain... uber style!! I love it!
skank... with tattoos as well? man you are hardcore... ;) I like that one a lot..
February 19th, 2004, 03:20 AM
Woot, back to monotone/antirealism happiness. :dork:
jook: That is.. very different from what you usually do. Sometimes it's easy to break things down into planar symmetry to see how shapes work together. It certainly turned out interestingly enough.
Ni*: really good lighting on that one!
j.mac: You know, I think you've got something by working on focus areas of the face, like just the nose and eyes. Maybe try *just* your lips and chinline, and see if that helps out your overall portraits.
samwell: Good lord man, that's well done. Lighting, perspective, texture, color... damn.
Elmo Lester: The full-on facial view turned out really well. Color and texture, fantastic.
Skank: that blue and white one is rocking! It's all about the lighting and colors. Awesome work dude. Good to see you drawing these more often.
Azzy: Draw..! :D
February 19th, 2004, 03:32 AM
Thank you much for the kind words. The original is 16 by 20. My painting teacher is a madwoman when it comes to color. I am greatful for finding her. I'll keep posting as they come. Until Then,
February 19th, 2004, 04:37 AM
I am in a weird/bad mood today, so just a couple quick sketches from some digi photos.
Silvrain: Very cool SP, oozes with personality. Your second to last one's colors are ultra cool, too.
Jook: Crazy man, really interesting, and cool.
Ni*: Looking good. Colors are getting a bit muddy, may look better if the shadows had more cool colors.
Samwell: Gorgeous work. How dare you put all us lowly digi artests to shame like that. ;)
J.Mak: That last one is great! Best one you've done, IMHO.
Elmo: Real, real cool. I love the colors in the second one.
February 19th, 2004, 06:28 AM
Great work guys, sorry I've been so tight lipped my last few postings, lots going on recently with me.
February 19th, 2004, 09:43 AM
as funny as the back of my head looks i think that is reall how it looks when i wear head_phones  my teacher told me to do this stuff every so often , b/c if i can get the shape of the hair and head that willhelp put everything else into perspective and placement will easier... i thought i would try it....
Silvrain - good idea! i showed one of my instructors my newsprint pad that is full of these and he said soemthing similar to what you are saying :D Thanks
i will comment later for everyone else :D
February 19th, 2004, 03:41 PM
a doodle from a paintchat...angles are all off but I want to draw with that 1pixel pencil again.
As you can see, i've had some major issues drawing as of late : / That...and color is the devil.
J.Mac :: The unfinished one with just your eyes and nose is very attractive to me...I should probably figure out the planes and dimensions of my face.
Skank :: I want to copy the one you did that just included your eyes, nose and mouth.
Kanimator :: The sarcastic expression looks good, especially the lighting.
Ni* :: It seems to get better and better the more you play with color. I am envious.
jook :: Once again, great experiments! The planar value looks like it was fun.
Wizard of KOZ :: The second one is especially gorgeous. I like the expression and colors.
Groover McNab :: The purple shadows are great, I'd say you accomplished that loose feel.
Elmo Lester :: Was the "funny mood" one fun to draw? Because it sure looks like it. I'm a big fan of the swirls.
samwell :: Wow! Painting? I love the angle, the shadows fall well. It looks great!
Silv :: I tried! I'll try again tonight.
Your colored one looks great, reminds me of the parking lot at CT when the oil swirls into the water. I love your "whoosh"!!! It's got to be the expression. It makes me smile. :D
February 19th, 2004, 07:59 PM
hit a bit of a dead spot, I seem to have done a million embarrasingly bad SPs which i dont dare show to anyone.. this one i enjoyed, I'm digging the oil pastels in painter 8!
Asbestos- Thanks for the compliment, I still find colour really frustrating like i am not getting something vital. Yours look good, just keep trying to push the contrast up..
Jmac- how the hell do you manage so many of these in pencil? :p nice work, the head outline one is cool, and your structure practice is paying off
BH- very nice as always, lots of mood in that last one
kanimator- i envy your pencil skill, i always have to block in the shapes then push them about whereas you seem to be able to just drop in the features, and your colour ones are cool, try a dark moody one :-)
Silvrain- that is more enhanced realism, it doesnt look to bad at all, it has loads of cheeky character to it, its cool
jook- looks like you're a robot in that one :-p
samwell- damn, thats really nice, the composition and colours are great.
elmo- the toon one is cool, and the second one is really interresting, technically good, and i like the colours and patterns too, does steam always shoot out of your headphones? :-p
ok, sorry if i missed anyone, there are so many people posting here now, which is a good thing!
February 19th, 2004, 10:30 PM
hot hot hot
Ni. that is cool, though be wary of the values in certain areas, such as under the chi/jaw. that splotch is taking my focus away from the rest of the face.
asbestoshazard: I like the swirly black glasses. :D :p that paintchat is lookin snazzy.
J.Mac. Jesus Christ you have no face!;) (the wink is a "just kidding wink)looks like a clean shaped head... good to see the effort you are putting into this...
Kanimator: neat sketches. are all your SP's from photos? just curious...
Silvrain: If you look at all my past posts, I keep saying how much I love your style. I envy how you can make something so simple look good. envy dammit, envy.
February 20th, 2004, 02:25 AM
tried some experimenting on this one, proportions are a little off but I like the way the colors turned out.
February 20th, 2004, 02:59 AM
Here's another SP. Did this back during Thanksgiving time. Thank you all for the warm reception. Pastels on Canson, Rough side.
February 20th, 2004, 04:41 AM
Bah, back to monotones.
Ni* :: Thanks for the advice and encouragement -- finding contrast in color is somthing I gotta learn. I should just let go, be messy and experiment. That SP is lookin' good -- what brushes do you favor?
jook :: Creepy! Maybe it's just the red eyes...but whoah. It reminds me of a superhero -- or villain. Protex of the Hyperclan...something or other. I like it.
Groover McNab :: I love the colors, too, the shadows are great!
samwell :: Very nice! nice to see the detail close on the canvas. Lips and eyes are especially well done.
February 20th, 2004, 07:19 AM
I was determined to do one that I actually liked and I came out with this...and I do like this.
February 20th, 2004, 08:36 AM
God, I don't know where to begin.
Samwell - Very nice SP's, welcome.
Groover - Good to see you back. A loose style doesn't necessarily mean you lose focus of the form and value of your drawing. I think looseness is more of a product of mastery of control than an actual style, but that's the way I've always heard and looked at it. Great work.
Jook - Your getting better, I like the experimentation and you had the beginnings of some solid ones a few SP's back. Even when inventing keep a focus on the structure, I think you lost it a bit in the last one, but the ones before you were gaining it very well.
Ni - I've always said show the good with the bad when it comes to this section. I can point you to some embarassingly bad ones I've posted, but they all fit the mood or style I was going for in the end. This section was more about growth to me than actually trying to impress anyone. If someone liked my work, it only reinforced my labor of love :D When your doing color, try to mass large shapes of color before getting into smaller and smaller shapes. If you try to do small color shapes from the start, it looks messy and confused from the start and it's hard to fix it, atleast for me. One other thing, try to incorporate the shoulders into SP's. It'll help ground the head and get rid of that floating head feeling, unless that's what your going for :D Nice work, keep it up my friend.
Abestos - Nice group you have there. Something feels off about the proportions though. It's either the eye positioning or the chin/mouth area.
J. Mac - I don't know what it is, but that last one is solid. The features aren't there, but the silhouette is solid and I'm sure if you filled that sucker in, I'd recognize you right off the bat. Your displaying quite a bit of growth.
Kanimator - Be careful of your facial axis. The first SP on the top is out of alignment. The head wants to go at one angle, and the features look like they want to go another. The bottom one is much more solid though. Keep it up bud.
Silvrain - Nice work. Don't be like me and be afraid of color. From the trend I've been noticing on this forum lately, everyone is jumping into the color action. Misery loves company, so you may as well bite the bullet and join us ;)
It is 5:45 AM here, I'll hit the rest of the comments tomorrow before my head hits the keyboard right now. Night guys.
February 20th, 2004, 04:29 PM
just a quickie before i go to the pub, i liked this one, still do a little bit :-p
no time for comments right now... only to say, BH, thanks for the comments, and you are right about this being a progress thread not a 'look how good this is!!' thread. I should have posted the failed attempts but i wasn't enjoying doing them and that meant I couldn't finish them or correct the mistakes i saw. thats my excuse... :-p
my aim for this one was to try and show my mood, which was pretty down, i think it maybe worked. let me know what you think

Experiment with color, eh? Think I went a bit overboard, but it was fun.
Skank: Whoa! Very, very cool. Love the colors.
nova: I've always loved your b&w "ink" work. The top one is very "distinguished". Though, be nice to see a smile, I know you have a very pretty one. :)
LadyLioness: Looks good, you're getting better. You may benifit from spending more time maping out where all the parts will go, before you start finalising them.
davi: Great colors! Various parts seem to be out of place, though. The great brushwork more than compensates, though.
Jason Manley: Awesome brush strokes, and I love the subdued colors and lighting.
Ni*: Pretty cool SP, it's very Impressionistic. I like your color choices. By the way, all of my sps are done with a mirror. Only those two sketches were from photos.
Blackhawk: This one is nice, as usual, could probably use more reds in the skintone. I love the red and black, by the way.
asbestoshazard: Very pretty SP. You look... happy :crosseyed ;) I like the yellow one, too. You have a slick style.
samwell: As before, very awesome. Like I said, stop showing us up! ;)
GrooverMcNab: Very smooth, I like the blues. Some of the purples may be a bit out of place, though.
jook: Super cool! One of my favorites of yours. (PS: did you see, I used some crazy colors too, this time ! :D )
February 22nd, 2004, 01:27 AM
Heya everyone! My second post here, ever! First time i did a portrait of myself; liked the sketch better then the painting. I need a LOT more practice. Going to try and do more.
looks sort of like a "sears pose" hehe
Kanimator - LOVED your portrait man. What an awesome use of colours. Wicked!!
Asbestoshazard--your potraits are consistant; i have a good idea of what you really look like; nice technique, and great consistancy!
February 22nd, 2004, 05:47 AM
Kanimator: jason manley didn't post a portrait he was quoting a piece that killing.people did. which is fantastic.
February 22nd, 2004, 06:29 AM
using the chalk tool in painter.
I still have a lot of problem with the eyes. I can get them to look good individually when I cover half the face but both eyes together just doesnt look right. I am working on it...
groover: I like teh colors...
samwell. I like that one even better than the last. good job man.
asbestoshazard: I like them as usual. I would like to see a different style just for fun... eh?
Blackhawk: I love the way you create your eyes...
Ni*: I think your face shows the feeling you were going for, not sure if the colors do though. I like the brush strokes.
Davi: I like your style, tell you so all teh time. something about your brush strokes and blendingg. its cool.
LadyLioness: glad to see you are back. I like it, shows much improvement. have you though about trying a 3/4th perspective one? I'd be interested how that would turn out...
nova: !!!! I love that first one. looking good and moody...
skank. very cool and evil and....... doooooom.
Kanimator: I really like the way teh color turned out. I think the yellow lines actually help to build depth. I am extremely glad to see you had fun with it. thats what its all about man...
sheldon: hey, hows it going? I like it, a lot of neato details. hope to see more from ya...
February 22nd, 2004, 09:05 AM
I haven't posted at all this month, which I had intended to do a bit as I did toward the end of last month. Having just checked out Androids update I feel a little more inspired to get back in and have a bit more of a go but I've got a problem...I get bored drawing my own face over and over again...any tips to get over that?
I'd like to try working straight into PS but I don't have a handy mirror that I can use for reference.
February 22nd, 2004, 06:48 PM
Bleh, another color attempt -- and I still need to work on not being afraid of throwing the really vibrant colors out there. Not satisfied, will play more.
Blackhawk :: Thank you -- I'll try to keep that in mind. I should work on some proportion-focused sketches. In the meantime, love yours once again. Very bold.
Ni* :: The colors! Again and again, your beautiful colors. They look so wet.
Davi :: I like the lighting, the reflection on the glasses and hair looks good. Nice SP.
LadyLioness :: The charcoal seems to bring out more smears and blends, good for shadows and texture. Have you tried playing with stomps and kneadable erasers? You can gain some neat effects with them.
nova :: Nice style -- I've always been a fan of b/w and monochormes and you make it look almost like ink. Just lovely. Do you work with ink?
Skank :: Just...creepy, dude. Really, really creepy. :D
Kanimator :: Thank you for the compliments. The blue and yellow reminds me again of Peter Chung a la The Animatrix(Matriculated).
Sheldon :: Thanks for the comment. Heehee, "sears pose" -- nice, I like that. Very controlled shading.
jook :: Eeee, new styles...I have this tendency to stick inside my comfort zone -- unlike yours, which always show some play. I'll have to try. I like the perspective in yours, chin and mouth especially.
February 22nd, 2004, 06:48 PM
I present today...
(davi, Killing.people: oopsie... heh, I think I even commented on Killing's SP before.... )
February 22nd, 2004, 07:07 PM
Haha its been a while. Awesome to see your guys faces.
I attempted a traditional painting on masonite. My first on this, it was cool but the paint chips easily.
I still have to figure out my face... :)
Davi- great self portrait, would like to see you on here more! :)
BH- been watching your colours- they are doing awesome,
jook, skank, lioness, hazard- good to see you guys around. so much improvement!!
ni- sweet...good colours!
February 23rd, 2004, 02:22 PM
God, I struggled with this one.
February 23rd, 2004, 03:21 PM
todays is a study for a assigment i have to do later this week guess what period i am from? ok i will comment later sorry for not right now. i could use your crits on this one if you don't mind...:D
February 23rd, 2004, 05:13 PM
a page of a few studies when no cpu with a wacom was around..
J.Mac... I really like the shading in that one there.
BlackHawk... It happens to the best of em. turned out nice in the end.
endregan... I really like how you handled the purple..
Kanimator... looking nice. the colors remind me of a dead person. the eyes bring it back alive though..
asbestoshazard... I like how consistant you are with yours. A lot of mine look like different people. Yours all look like the same person. Great likeness...
February 23rd, 2004, 05:17 PM
I draw and paint extremly slow it takes me 3 to 4 hours do do a good portrait. Hence Iīm going to do sp:s that I put in about 30 to maximum 60 minutes once weekly and post them here and hopefully get som crits from you.
Itīs been a while since I drew so this one is the first with a beard. Iīm looking up a just little does it show?
Used one of those pen with a nib (donīt know the english word)
Iīve been looking trough the whole tread so many sp:s that I almost got "tunnelvision", but I try to comment at least some of you and the rest of you Iīm sorry
Silvrain: liked your first one and the one fromfeb 8 the best
Killing.people : great sp:s
Jook : Liked your "hot hot hot"a lot
Ni* liked your blue and green one
J.Mac: Nice sp:s. It seems like youīre put most time on your eyes then nose then mouth. It would be really great to see one were the same attention to every little aspect to the face.
asbestoshazard really liked your portrait of silvrain and the one were you used i think a blue ballpen.
ladylioness Itīs seems like your improving at least what I can see comparing your two sp:s
nova You get a lot in very little
Blackhawk : nice sp:s
kanimator: like your style
February 23rd, 2004, 05:47 PM
a race against light
February 24th, 2004, 09:54 AM
Lots of great SP's lately
killing.people- this latest one has a bit of a cinematic feel in the lighting and colour. Kinda creepy...
So I decided to put in some effort and do another SP. To make it interesting I decided to tackle it in colour and using my tablet- two fairly decent hurdles for me.
It turned out better than I expected, except for the likeness, which is a little off...but you can't have everything.
Oh yeah...I've got a pretty stupid expression too...
February 24th, 2004, 12:12 PM
another study for this assignment i thinki am going to go with the other pose. it is more fun "imo" both of htese were done with vine charcoal so i couldbe loose and quick. i wish it looked mor elike me though :o
expat - not shabby i like the colours you used
killing - looking good :D do you use painter for these sp's?
Mindflaw - welcome! thanks for the comments yes i do tend to work in that order. it is a habit that is hard to break i must say...
jook - pencils! cool looking good. and thanks!
BH - that sp is really great i like the textures and how there are so many of them :D
endregan - nice to see you dropping by again. cool i like the colours used. you should try to see the different values and intensities that are in your skin. good work keep it up!
Kanimator - nice, it kind of looks like colour pencils.
asbestoshazard - cool you are getting more into colour that is nice to see. keep going with it! :D
skank - you are one crazy mother fauckner :D
nova - the first one is really nice i like the way you handle the black :D
February 24th, 2004, 01:33 PM
for these last few, i have used painter7. i switch around from painter to photoshop.
February 24th, 2004, 02:00 PM
J.Mac: Heh, some of it is colored pencil. I used a #2 pencil, 6B pencil, brush marker, red and blue colored pencil, and photoshop.
February 24th, 2004, 03:39 PM
J.Mac: I like the perspective you put into the eyes...
expat. looking good. not sure about the bright eyes though... just me I guess...
Mindflaw: thanks and welcome to the sp section. looking forward to more...
February 24th, 2004, 07:40 PM
Thanks J.Mac and Jook,
I know the eyes are probably a bit too much...the thing is I was trying to experiment with using colour and blending nicely because I'm a major novice at using colour well in photoshop. I'm a bit better at it in traditional media.
I also tried to experiment with specular lighting and the easiest place to do that was the eyes...plus I thought the green would help create the focal point in the eyes...
it's all experimentation...
February 25th, 2004, 03:28 AM
blearg... dunno if I like mine today. and this is the second one. you don't get to see the first.
February 25th, 2004, 07:09 AM
Painter sucks. Especially Painter watercolors. I've half a mind to move that little purple paint bucket straight to the Recycle Bin. Bah.
February 25th, 2004, 10:57 AM
OK so somehting is off i think it might be that eye is to far from the bridge of the nose... i would really appreciate it if everyone ripped this apart. if you have the time could you guys/gals just point out anyhting and everything that doesn't look right. htis is my final piece that i just started only about 1.5 hours into it so i am more than willing to erase the whole face and try it again :D
silvrain - it doesn't suck it is just another creature all together give it a chance it will grow on you :D
Kanimator - seems to me that one side of your face is higher than the other.
jook - cool playing around i like that you have all those brush strokes in there :D
February 25th, 2004, 11:49 AM
had a idea of what to do becaus ethis was really bothering me and i am not going to accept anything less then the best i can do and that is by far not the best.
what i should look like
what i need to move and correct
_ the eyes are to low plus the shape of the m is completelty off, the nose needs to come over more... :o so much i see is wrong after doing this, i am losing confidence in myself quickly :(
Jens - that is very nice i like your confidence in your strokes :D looks good
February 25th, 2004, 11:08 PM
first digital sp, this was fun. about 30 min
February 26th, 2004, 01:52 AM
more work to do....
February 26th, 2004, 03:20 AM
Man, to make up for my last SP, I made a huge effort to focus on proportions... and just making it look like me.
And here's my attempt to do a "darker" SP. Ooooh, don't I look all brooding and stuff?
Silvrain: Sorry you hate Painter (I do too...), but you're SP is pretty nice. Strange color combo, though.
J.Mac: Looking waaaaaay better than before. Really looks like you now. Keep going, can't wait to see it finished.
Jens: Your pencils rock! Somewhere between the two SPs lies the real size of your eyes. :D Both of your SPs look like two different people. Keep doing these, I'm curious to see what you really look like.
bhuddistmonk: Good first SP. It's a bit scribbly, maybe if you slowed down and focused on the quality of the lines more. Keep em coming.
February 26th, 2004, 03:48 AM
feeling goofy tonight...
kanimator... I like the "brooding" one. Its tough to get that angle to look like that angle, but you did it..
J.Mac. That is looking good. and it is looking like you. I like the outfit man....
bhuddistmonk... cool. glad to see your face. be wary of your proportions though. I doubt your nose is wider than the mouth... keep at it buddy...
Jens... I am really liking these. really simple and confident...
Silvrain... sorry to hear about your distaste for painter. I adore the program.. but hey, to each their own... Interesting color choices.. like it...
February 26th, 2004, 06:59 AM
February 26th, 2004, 09:21 AM
hey guys, thanks for replies, this is a Super Quickie before school
February 26th, 2004, 11:05 AM
Unfortunatly i have run out of time to work on this one anymore. i have to pass it in at 12:30 today :( i think this has come along way... the lips are kicking my ass though :bash: my brain is starting to smoke...
bhuddistmonk - welcome to the family :) even though you might be working quickly don't forget to
be wary of your proportions though
also your should try to include you neck, unless you are going for the floating head bit :D
skank - splarf :D
jook - you really remind me of earth worm jim in this one lol to funny :D oh and thanks
Kanimator - thanks much :D your sps are good ilike t he brooding one i have been wanting to do one like that for awhile.
Jens - just keep at it you will find the size :D
February 26th, 2004, 03:55 PM
i need to learn how to paint..
February 26th, 2004, 04:23 PM
LEARN to paint?? You need to teach me!! Das is good!
February 26th, 2004, 04:59 PM
This is my first post on these boards. There seems to be an incredible amount of talent here! Here's a self-portrait I tossed off last night.
February 26th, 2004, 05:26 PM
Ho hey! Lots of good stuff in here.
Heh, I`m not blonde either, just lazy...
February 26th, 2004, 07:42 PM
j.mac, your piece came out very nice.
pib991, nice use of hues. what did you use for this portrait? a wacom. photoshop, smudge tool..
February 26th, 2004, 09:20 PM
J.mac- DUDE thats wicked. good that u used photo ref to see. i havent done that yet..but it works really well i see! That SP turned out really well. so good...
good to see you going strong. where is that outfit from? you actually wear it?!
nofish- awesome :)
jens- nice and clean
kanimator - so crisp i like it
jook - you crazy man :). keep it up
pibb- sweet painting.
skank - mysterious :P
monk- good to see some sketchers. is it digital? try some pencil its more fun!
keep it up guys, its a good month!
February 26th, 2004, 09:22 PM
texture and then colour experiment, bleuch!
loads of great work in my few days of slacking off, i feel bad now. i just didnt seem to be able to progress with anything.
asbestos- this will demnstrate that any success i've had with colour was just a fluke :-p
February 26th, 2004, 11:33 PM
hey guys, too tired to finish this one, i think im getting sick......
February 26th, 2004, 11:36 PM
killing- wacom, painter 8, airbrush, soft blender stump
February 27th, 2004, 01:16 AM
i'm still trying to get a handle for this...bare with me
February 27th, 2004, 05:51 AM
ok this one came out alright
February 27th, 2004, 08:22 AM
Probably one of my favorites thus far...Painter, mostly watercolors.
Comments...later...when I'm not about to fall over in a sleepy haze. XD
February 27th, 2004, 09:03 AM
February 27th, 2004, 09:51 AM
Hereīs one more
Pen, ink splatter, 40 min. Deformed my head a lot in this one :(
J.mac: Thanks for welcoming me :)
Jook Thanks for welcoming me too:)
skank : that "blarga" sp would look pretty cool in poison green too you now quite bright and intense enoying intense he he
davi : Your sp:s imo are looking good
imo means in my opionion, does it? or else I got that wrong
February 27th, 2004, 09:58 AM
I don't really have an excuse/explanation -- This was just loads of fun to do. It's important to play now and again?
Again...comments...later.... >_< forgive me.
February 27th, 2004, 10:37 AM
damn davi. you are so ... opaque? your paintings have a unique brush signature, that i will discover to put to my own use :p oh yes.
thanks for the rapid onslaught of portraits.
February 27th, 2004, 10:52 AM
doesnt look anything like me....
February 27th, 2004, 01:12 PM
My expression is a bit more manical than it usually is...
February 27th, 2004, 02:12 PM
Hi, i'm just another newbie... Those four are my attempts on self portraits from the last few days:
aaargh - deformed
First try on charocals, they're fun
All of them resemble me a bit, but don't capture me truly... Have to do more.
mindflaw: May be deformed, but the inksplatter looks cool
asbestoshazard: I really like this one, being very experimental it still resembles your other sp's
Roxell: So much texture in here - cool
February 27th, 2004, 05:13 PM
I think it was J.Mac that asked me how I start my SP's out, not sure though... anyways, I decided to just show you instead of try and explain it...
Hopefully someone gets something out of this.. mabey I will even get advise on a step I do wrong or could be done easier...
the final image:
Kathy: Welcome! I really like the first one.. keep at it...
Roxell: looking cool there.. like the style. I think the background is a bit too busy though... just me mabey?
asbestoshazard: Hell yeah! that is what I am talking about... love the fun!
mindflaw: looks better I think. Still a few proportional problems. Just keep comparing the position of your features to each other. For instance: The corners of the mouth are USUALLY right about in the middle of the eyes... just observe...
davi: you are a madman. I really like the second one of the post with 2 in it.. turned out really nice.
bhuddistmonk: sorry to hear about the sickness thing. I am totally sick right now too.. BUT I DONT HAVE TO WORK BECAUSE OF IT! YES! nice start. lets see another...
J.Mac: That turned out REALLY nice. I love it man.. bravo!
Skank: I like it... emerging from the darkness...:evilbat:
February 27th, 2004, 11:26 PM
hey guys, i contracted idontgiveadamnififinishthisornot-itis
this one is bad
February 28th, 2004, 03:03 AM
February 28th, 2004, 05:05 AM
killing.people, jook: thanks :}
i've never done these before and i realized how much more experience i need with them...so i'm working on my ass off on them...
i honestly have the worst light set up for these though, and my mirror is so scratched up it's blurry...so hopefully i can get a new mirror and a light that is easy to move around soon.
keep it up guys and gals.
February 28th, 2004, 09:10 AM
Didnīt really have any time oto post comments yesterday. But today I have some spare minutes...
expat: nice colours. Maybe if you made "softer transitions" your face would be more smoother.
silvrain: give it some time before deciding whether to like the program or not always takes some tome to learn a new medium...and the sp did turn out good...didnīt it
Jens: But the eraser is your best friend and not just to erase errors but to make highlights and stuff...anyway without an eraser you could draw very light and then fill in the lines that turned out good, sometimes keeping the a lot of light lines make the drawing very expressive.
Bhuddistmonk: keep it up, you could do one where you really spend time finishing maybe even several sessions, it cereates different problems to slove like shading and stuff
J.Mac I was looking at your progression with the sp (the one with the hat) and the improvements really shows and it turned out good too.
Roxell: I liked in your last sp how it seemed to be drawn with white instead of black.
n0fish: good shading
endregan: I was looking at your eyes and I think that if you start drawing the "tearchannels" too your eyes will improve.
Ni*: Keep going, I always seems to improve a lot when I kept going through a "downperiod"
asbestoshazars: your last one makes me think of the Borg in Star Trek:D
Kathy: Yeah a toothbrush saves more than the teeth, anyway without correct proportions no matter what effects one uses it will still be lame. But to quote you "Have to do more". All of your sp:s looks like the same person, looking forward to more of your sp:s, the true capture is out there.
Jook: always fun to see a sp progression :D. I like your last sp and somehow I like the feeling in the second last image in your progression.
My proportions are off but Iīm trying to draw three times as fast than Iīm used to in order to force my self to be more efficent and find faster ways to position features where they should be. In that sp I only gave (actually) the mouth compared to eyes and the ears compared to the eyebrows some time, hence making everything else a bit off thus making the mouth seem totally wrong. I was looking just a little down and slightly to my right. Thanks for your help I appreciate it.
hope my comments make some sense

poor composition, lacks contrast... but i think i got the angle right and i've never tried sponges in painter before so it was an experiment again, i might try to adjust the contrast in painter, is that cheating? :-p

Soooo busy here lately....
I decided to try doing a portrait directly in Photoshop from memory. Yeah.... not sure it looks like me as much as I would like. Maybe it's a deeper look into my subconcious, or something.
Man, I've got a busy, busy week ahead of me.

Davi: Is interesting to see your realistic self-portraits. Although my impression was probably influenced by your avatar, I always pictured you to have sharper features.
