Not sure if I can start this post or not, but hey, worth a try. Second month already into the new year. Great work so far, everyone.

Here's my contribution.

Nice way to start the month...

I like how simple and energetic that is Silvrain.

Killing: That top one was looking like it was going to be badass.. I like the background.

cool..

trying out more color combos...

Excellent work, people.

This is my first submission to the self-portrait threads. I insisted on stopping once I spent a full hour on it, so I did. I started off with the left eye, and expanded the portrait around that. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep a consistent pose, so I had to do a bit of guesswork once I had the direction of the drawing set down.

silvrain, i like the comic book style

killing.people- those are great, you use photoshop?

jook- good structure in those ones again, not sure about the green though. but you are improving alot.

jack in box- interresting technique, how did you get that? just a high texture brush?

sone one- thats very nice, really confident looking and i like your use of layering to suggest the hair texture.

cheers

Actually, I was using entirely the "dissolve" effect for airbrush in Photoshop 6.0.

What the hell, I figured.

All right i am ready to kick ass this month!!! well here is an ok start for me.... oh and i would appreciate any crits or comments! :D
http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/sp70.jpg

Ni* - not shabby, the placement of the features are good! keep it up :D

sone_one - i like the way your sp looks it has a interesting style.

JaCkinbOx - not bad. at first i thought you just did a bad scan of your sp....:p

jook - much better looking sp's! you are improving it is great to see you progress. just keep it up!

killing.people - oohh i like the first one alot, to bad you didn't finish it.

Silvrain - your style has a nice flow to it :D

great work everyone this is just the begining.... lets kick the crap out of last month :rambo: :electric:

-Jesse

p.s. apparently some people can't see the images i post from fortunecity so i will add a link. hopefully that helps....

p.p.s if it still is being dumb try refresh a couple of times, and if that still doesn't i dunno all i can say is :wtf:

p.p.p.s -i just moved my stuff to a different host it should work just fine now.... i hope :(

J.Mac - The eyes appear a little far apart, and the neck looks to be a tad too broad.

Your highlighting looks good.

My only other significant suggestion that hits me would be to loosen up on your linework a little. Strong, but a little too controlled, if you take my meaning.

J.Mac
February 2nd, 2004, 11:39 PM
JaCkinbOx - thanks for the comments, you know what i seem to always make that space too big in alot of my sp's. for some reason i never catch it but than again i never really noticed it before.... oh and the reason my lines seem to be that way is b/c i am very analytical when it comes to finding form, but then again i should learn to loosen up :D

I had issues with the colors.. Oh well, at least it's a move out of black and white (or that blue scheme) no matter how wierd it turned out.

Haven't been around for a while...something from open canvas with a mirror. X_X

Silvrain :: Both beautiful -- but i think I like the 2nd more than the first. Maybe it's my love of color <3 The eyes draw me in.
killing.people :: The first one blows me away -- the bg, everything. I'm amazed that it has detail without being -really- detailed.
jook:: Nice play with colors on the first one.
JaCkinbOx :: Great texture, the eyes just pop out.
sone_one :: Love the texture and depth in the face; I'm jealous of the depth -- I feel like I rammed my face into a wall.
Ni* :: Again with the color! I like the little hints of blue/green that hide in there.
J.Mac :: Your sp reminds me of geometry...or that art exercise where they make you pay attention to geometric surfaces on organic items...looks good.

Ni*
February 3rd, 2004, 08:30 AM
Jmac- i can finally see your image!! nice image, it looks like you started on (your) right eye because that is the most detailed and confident area. other people have mentioned the slight proportion issues, but i think its the viewer's right earphone, it is sitting too high so makes your ear look a bit high. nice to finally get to see your work though ;-)

silvrain- you look drunk or ill :-p maybe drop a bit more of those warm colours into the cheeks to improve your well being..

asbestos- ooo.. a pouty one, nice expression, and you've really got the hang of smooth shading. to give it a bit more depth you could really darken all the shadows, try increasing the contrast in photoshop or painter.
and i am a glutton for punishment, i'll keep at this colour thing untill it works, or at least looks ok

cheers

20 minutes... it only took 20 minutes for me to warp my face.... :bash: this became to frustrating for me. some where along the line i start to miss information or distort what i see. the worst part is i don't realize i am doing it at the time becuase i get so into the drawing..... i am not sure what to do about this :xx:

Ni* - thanks and you right so today i worked on the other side more.....

asbestoshazard - you are right about the geometric look :) i do that sometimes by accident b/c i get so into finding the planes. nice sp i like the look of it. th only thing i notice i sthat your eyes seem to be a bit to far apart.

Silvrain - i like that alot it looks very playful. the colours are good, your nose looks like a ball or somehting....or maybe you are secretly a clown

J.Mac :: For sure! Makes me want to try and play with your style.
killing.people :: Interesting medium, did it darken? I'd love to see it again after a little time has passed.
Blackhawk :: Stunning, as per usual -- I wouldn't say failed at all! I love the smeary quality.

Hey, three for three. And today was a shitty day too. Only took me about 40 minutes of sketching and mucking around with browns.

http://silvrain.com/DSP/shittyday.jpg

blackhawk: man, how you get those colors is beyond me. When you do them, they look natural and realistic.

killing.people: god, that's creepy. But it's a great effect, really makes the picture.

j.mac: I can see improvement in your s/ps. Maybe you could save a copy halfway through the completion progress, and compare it to a finished piece, see the point where you drift. You put in a lot of hard angles with that pencil, maybe try some curves.

azzy: you know I love it. All your work :9

Ni*: Man, that's great. The coloring is awesome.

jook
February 4th, 2004, 03:57 AM
Silvrain: I really like your style. All three of them are cool, but that second one is ultra cool. The red nose just kicked me in the face with its coolness...

asbestoshazard : That first one is really pretty, good job. I like that sketch on the second one, it is kinda funny. I wish I had a job where I could doodle...

Blackhawk: I'd bet it would have turned out well if you went with the flow and just kinda finished it, I thought it was turning out nice... oh well.

killing.people: sorry to hear about your toe.. Way to take one for the team, or something...

J.Mac: I like how you measure everything out and seem pretty precise with things.. It would be cool to see some more finished pieces but I am glad to see you doing them period.. something is better than nothing...

Ni*: I like the colors on that one, orange is actually my fav. Anyways, mabey you should try out a brush with a harder edge.... just a suggestion.

sone_one: I like that one. It is like half stylized, half realistic... I think its the eyes...

THis time I just wanted to have fun with it, not worrying about all the technical stuff like anatomy measurements, value, and perspective.. sometimes you just gotta have fun...

this was just me playing around, i got pissed off at painter which keeps crashing with no warning at all... anyone else using painter classic?

not alot to say about this one... not alot to it either

http://nirvine.250free.com/febsp3.JPG

killing.people- wait a few days untill that scabs over and then pick it off, i'm betting there will be a nice new drawing of skin underneath ;-)

BH- the only bad thing about that one is the remaining blocks of white, although it does creat a kind of surreal feeling.

Asbestos- that sketch is great! nice somposition too, i love confident pen work.

Silvrain- thanks for the compliment, nice SP too, you really know the shape of your face and that lets you do nice confident shading. the colour one was better i think, because it was so different. good work.

Jook- thanks for the advice about the hard brush, i conciously try to keep to hard edged brushes but a lack of confidence in my drawing tends to push me towards the forgiving tools like the chalk and charcoal. Also, i cant seem to get rid of the textures on painter classic, very annoying.
oh and i fully agree that this is all about enjoying the process. have fun :-)

cheers

Felt being alittle more dynamic with this sp, and intern i made myself abreaviate the information on my face which help me out some... any who you know i welcome anythoughts there might be about this.
http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/sp72.jpg

Ni* - sorry to hear painter crashing onyou like that. the program is known for that though so eh. that looks cool almost like you had stencil and used some spray paint.

jook - thanks :D i was thinking about doing alonger sp. you know like 3 - 6 hour one on toned paper. i figured if i spend that much time on it i am bound to figure soemhtingnew out :D you sp's are so fun you definatelty have the right mind set for these.

silvrain - thank you too. i feel that would be a good idea for me to do. variety is the spice of life :D. i like the colours you used it really gives a mood and ambients to it.

asbestoshazard - yeah :) i like playing with BPP too. i feel more free and less critical of what i am doing. keep them coming!

killing.people - haha that is great!! not the stubbed toae part :p but the blolod usage. reminds me of when Android did somehting like that....... speaking of Andriod where is he.......

BH - i like you colour sp's the have there own appeal that is nice :D just keep pumping them out!

great work everybody this a great way start the month!!!!

p.s. - now that i look at it again i made my body alittle bigger (wider) than it is argh! and i felt pretty good about this one too.

i dont think there are enough swear words in existance to allow me to curse painter classic enough... it just keeps switching off, no warning, no system crash or hanging, it just goes away. Quite often taking alot of work with it, and it often dies as i'm about to click 'save as'.

*deep breaths*

does anyone else have this problem with painter classic?

I'll do another SP tomorrow, i think in photoshop this time..

Did this in OpenCanvas between rounds of frag-style fun with some of my best friends. Proportionately off...but I like it or maybe it's just the girly pink talking.

Silvrain :: Love the neutrals <3 And you do the solid shading so well. I love your art, too. :)
jook :: Angle, colors and crazy hair -- all wonderful but I think my favorite part about that one is the mouth: the expression, the sculpt!
J.Mac :: Strange as it seems, i hear a lot of people claim the opposite of BPP...I know I used to have such a latch on my eraser -- now I find pencil almost more difficult to work with.
endregan :: I like the way your neck looks in that pic, particularly the left side -- it'd be great to see more contrast (I'm one to talk >_<) Do you use several pencils or just one?

Ok so i have a new host for my images yay! hopefully that won't be an issue any more. Ok so today wheni got up i really wanted to a sp even though i was grogy and half asleep for the first attempt. then alittle later i started another one which failed also. the i was think about where i was going wrong with my sps. so i was being very critical and observant on the third sp. and not to much into it i realize what starts to mak ethe picture look off... it isn't the fact that i make the eyes to far apart it is the fact that i make the eys a little less then a quarter smaller than they should be.... ah haaaa!

http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/sp73.jpg

killing - ooohhhh i like that one it is nice you have nice forms in that sp :D

Silvrain - lol that is a funny caricature :)

asbestoshazard - yes i agree sometimes i am the same way. nice sp it has a mood to it, good work.

endregan - nice to see you around here!! so what have you been up to lately... besides not being here posting your sp's. anywho that is your best yet "imo" ok crit time for you b/c it hink you are ready to move to the next level. ok so you seem to have a pretty good handle on shapes and alittle bit on form, but i feel though that you are not really understanding what you see (i don't really either so this is just somehting i was told :p) keep going with finding the shapes but ithink you should start to look at form and try to investigate why it looks they way it does and how they light falls on your face.... does that make sense or did i just waiste alot of pixels :D

ni - from what i can tell, you're really improving.. keep it up.. oh, and if painter treats you bad, try photoshop, its working great for me.

jook - you're pretty brave with those colors man. you should branch out and try some different styles, even brush sizes... don't let yourself get bogged down, you know..

here's mine.. just kind of experimenting with different styles and different ways to use color. at first i hated this one, but after looking at it for a while, i like it a lot.

*edit* utter shite! any advice is much appreciated, i just looked at this again and it's even worse than i thought....*edit*

i give up!

not entirely but with this one.. i've had enough. i dont like the layering of the photoshop brushes, it takes some getting used to, i think painter can be much more forgiving.

i seem to have little or no patience for these recently, i know more work means better results but when you can see the mistakes repeated, then it is disheartening. Also, i am getting no better at figures so i should practice those too.

anyway here is one for friday night after a few beers;

http://nirvine.250free.com/feb4.jpg

stormeffex- those are nice again, the one as a clown is really cool, it has alot of character, what is your process for those? ink wash over pencil?

BH- you growing a quiff there? :-p and get back to the colour you big wimp! (but seriously, the concistency of your work here is an inspiration and it would be great to see you push the colour stuff some more)

J.mac- that one is really good, you need to darken the outer planes of the face to push the shape back a bit i think. it would really give form to the portraits. i mean the cheeks and jaw line.

asbestos- the line work around the eyaes is really nice, but watch how far apart your eyes are, maybe just a little suggested detail on the inside edge of each eye would pull them in a little, they look the correct size but just a bit cut of to the inside.

elven- nice colours there, a fer highlights in the eyes and that would really come alive.

jook- your structure has improved a huge amount in the last few months, great progress, watch the nose though, i can't give advice on that because i'm no good at noses, but i think yours shows too much nostril.

cheers all

Ni: I like how bright your past ones have been...

stormeffex: those are cool.. I really like the clown and the one with the hat bill pointing right at me with your eyes partially covered.. nice colorage.

Blackhawk: cool. for some reason it reminds me of the 50's.

j.Mac: I like seeing pencil on this thread. looking good.. keep em up.

asbestoshazard: I like your style a lot. looking good again.

elevenrequiem: I like it all except for the eyes. I dont know if it a style thing, but I dont see a reason for the pupils to be a different size than each other.. the rest was looking slick though...

Ni*: Sucks to hear about your version of painter. I use painter 8 and it works perfect for me... That one is really gritty and cool though. you have a small mouth.

I looked at my last one and hate it even more than before. I tried to exxaggerate the angle and perspective, but it looks stupid. anyways, I did another one to try to redeem myself to myself. I really like this one.

Simple...but I like it. I makes up for my last one...I guess it's time to stop using OpenCanvas so much. This one was out of Painter.

J.Mac :: Thanks! This one was a quickie, too. The eyes in your latest are just gorgeous, I like the detail in them.
Blackhawk :: It just floors me how you get so much depth out of so little detail.
stormeffex :: I like the last two in that batch, especially. Is that just water color or ink, too in 020504?
Ni* :: Thanks for the advice. When I stare at my face too long I feel like there's a mile between my eyes. Grr. The color one of yours is nice, there's definition in it but I really like that b/w one, it feels more loose.
jook :: Thank you :) -- Your style is definetly neat, too -- the quick lines, the scribbling. That green one is especially successful.
Silv :: <3
RefriferatorCo :: I remember first playing with my Wacom -- and I wasn't anywhere near as successful as those. :D The second one is great. I love the scribbles, it just makes me want to pull on a line and untangle the whole thing.

Azzy reminded me to draw, sooo I did one, even though I just got off work and sat here in my uniform drawing with annoyance. Speaking of which, asbestoshazard, I like the last one you did best out of all the ones I've seen so far. Gorgeous.

Refrigerater: Your style is very, very cool. I like the loose, scribbly style you've got going on. It still gets the point across.

jook: the one of you in green.. I'd have to say that's your best so far. Man, you improved fast. I really like the lighting on that one. Ever consider touching it up to be a real finished piece? I think it'd look awesome.

Ni*: Very awesome style change. I think that worked great.

stormeffex: Dude, that's just fantastic, all the ways you drew yourself. It's a change to see more than just a headshot. They have so much feeling to them.

Blackhawk: Darn you and your near-perfect lighting.

another born of a bored skribble, i started with the outline of my head and it didnt work too well untill i started hinting at some details, hence the slightly pissed off expression :-p

Silv :: Love the earbuds and your hair (as always) but it's really all about your nose in that one :)
Ni* :: I'd say your color experiment went rather well despite any confusion you may have had -- Nice shaping with your jaw and cheek.

I was really happy with tonights...

Skank: I totally understand. my thunderdome is kicking my ass too. along with school and a job. damn... cool little sketch though. really gives off a tired feeling.

LadyLioness: welcome back. everything seems in close to the right place. looking good there, improvement is always good to see. One thing that LungBug said once (though many others have as well, I just remember him saying it) is to remember to construct what you are drawing. think of it as converting a 3d image into a 2d picture, not as outlining features... great jorb so far though.

asbestoshazard: :D. that one of Silvrain is really cool. you managed to put in the action that he does in his portraits of himself.

Kanimator: it is a bit lopsided... haha, still looks good. your style is unmistakable.

Ni: that color one could have turned out cool had you ran with it. dont give up so easily..

Silvrain: love that one. it is cool how you draw these things...

RefrigeratorCo: That big one is pretty slick. I like where you sere heading with the colors. Be really careful of the neck. you are drawing it way too thin on most of those, especially on the ones with the harder to draw angles...

ok, some comments....

refrigerator- you certainly have the confidence to make the marks... try a bigger brush, getting smaller as you add detail, very lively SPs though.

Asbestos- I think if you can put the tonal contrast of the silvrain portrait into your SPs then you've cracked the B+W ones. but i do like your looser ones, the last couple have been really nice, where you can see the lines around the eyes.

Klev- missed your pic last time, sorry. its cool, though it does look like a bad webcam pic :p but when i saw that it was guache... good work.

kanimator- i think the thing creating the squint looks is that you put (your) left eye too high. nice work though.

ladylioness- get a big bit of soft charcoal and try to really block in the tones. I've found that the bigger the brush or tool i use, the more i can relax and the easier i find it to block in the shapes. I like your confessional notes on your drawings :-)

skank- that one smells of coffee :-p it reminds me of trying to put presentation work together after way too much horribly strong university coffee.

BH- very nice, as ever, it really reeks of tiredness, i like the little stray construction lines too.

Jmac- some really nice higlights on that, but it is the distance between nose and mouth that makes it look odd, if the nose was a little longer it'd be great.

Jook- the colour one is a huge improvement, take care of the highlight running around your jaw.. it kind of flattens that side of the face, maybe darken that down a little, i like the two tone one too (are you wearing eyeliner? after the crossdressing one i'm not sure what to expect from you :-p )

its great to see the improvement in everyone's work, even in the short time i've been taking part in this, well done

cheers

Crits and anything you notice is always welcomed and appreciated!

http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/sp76.jpg

jook - the full coloured one that you did is very nice! you should do more of those when you have time :D

Kanimator - cool sp it looks good, the only thing that bothers me alittle is your eyes. to big maybe? good work though

Ni* - thanks for you crits :D i really appreciate it. you just should relax with your sps and have fun with them like jook does. i have a hard time relaxing too, when it comes to colouring anything on the comp i get so bent out of shape. that is why i do pencil sp's on newsprint. none the less you are improving. keep it up!

BH - i don't think i am ever going to get over how simple you can make your lines and yet accomplish so much in a sp :D

asbestoshazard - like the burnt sienna looking sp. it is good i like the warm colours alot :D

skank - you look like a raisin lol... i hope to see you around here again soon!

LadyLioness - not bad at all :) it looks like you are starting to understand proportion, i think you should start to try and understand the forms on your face and study how the light falls on it. good work keep it up!

klev - guache.... i give you props for that, i really don't like guache to much unless it is watered down. which your sp doesn't appear to be. good work, neat colours.

Silvrain - i really like your last one the best so far! great work :D

http://www.studiodimensions.com/kelsey/tempandpost/kelsey2.jpg (http://studiodimensions.com/kelsey/tempandpost/kelsey2.jpg)

Blackhawk: I like how you try to optimize your strokes with your work, something I'm always struggling to do.

J.Mak: I like the work you've been doing, but I think you are misplacing the nose. you should make sure everything is lined up, before you refine them (not that I'm the best at that...)

Ni*: I really like the values and colors on that last one. I think it would be better if you filled out the resto of the head.

Jook: that last SP is very creative and interesting. don't know about the pink, though.

kanimator: these are addictive, aren't they? I find these as a good way to just experiment, explore, and have a ton fun since they arent for clients, school, or really to impress anybody. your latest isnt lopsided. good job man.

J.Mac: I like how consistant you are with these. you are just imporving at a steady rate. I think that is a good thing. I tomorrow nights should be another full color one I spend a great deal of time on. Thanks for the compliment.

Ni*: haha. thanks for the compliments. no eyeliner. just playing around...

Kanimator - Be careful with your symmetry. No, it isn't that your naturally lopsided, although it is a good copout :D Observe your features more closely, set up some kind of construction form for you to follow as well. A trick I do now to combat the lopsideness is to quickly establish where my eyes, nose, and mouth will be. Nothing extravagant, just dots and lines, but it's done miracles for my symmetry. I've been doing these SP's for over a year and if you go back to when I first started, my eyes and everything were all out of whack. It was very frustrating times.

J. Mac - Thanks, I'm always, struggling with these. I'm trying to keep it simple now to see how well I can do without drawing like a monkey on crack and redrawing areas 50 times over. Now onto yours. Your SP's seem so angular and hard. It's good that your working curved surfaces in straight lines, that's definitely where you start, but soften it up in spots. Basically experiment a bit, you'd be surprised how much you'd learn if you tackled your SP's from another angle.

Ni - I find for myself that drawing pissed off didn't get anything accomplished. I almost broke my tablet a few times by doing that. Keep establishing a solid form, maybe sharpen up the features a bit. Good going so far though, take it a step further though.

AbestosHazard - Thank you. Welcome to the world of Painter, it's a beautiful program. I dig your style.

Silvrain - Great work. Your last one was well done, try hatching everything in the same direction next time and see what kind of effect it gives you.

Jook - Good stuff, nice to see you experimenting a bit, try different angles, poses, and lighting as well. Watch your values as well. Nailing good values will let your SP's sing.

More comments later, it's 7am here and I've been up since 9am yesterday... blech.

It is hard because it all depends on the lighting. Just draw what you see in the mirror I guess, that is what I do.. I hope someone gives you the correct advise because mine is lame.. sorry bud.

klev :: Love the solids and contrast.
Kanimator :: That earlier colored one is fabulous, especially the funny smirk on the mouth (reminds me of a PeterChung mouth). I like the tones on the skin.
LadyLioness :: Nice job on the shape of the eyes, it'd be great to see you bring out more contrast and tone in your work -- bringing out the shape of your face and such.
Skank :: Looking good and rough and tired! It screams :D
jook :: It's great to see the experiments, man! The pointlism (?) looks like it was so much fun.
Blackhawk :: Thanks for the kind words -- your stuff is completely inspirational, always looks so good. I'd love to see you finish some color work. Color is beyond me.
J.Mac :: I like the angle, I think it looks good -- and I look forward to seeing more of your playing around with it. Probably one of my favorites of yours so far.
Ni* :: These last two of yours are awesome -- the blue!! The large brushstrokes give a nice effect and the orange highlights on the other one bring a neat look into it.

If I wasn't convinced I'd be laughed out of the neighborhood or fired from my jobs, I'd definitely do the Guile hair thing. Haven't done any SP's as of late. I figured workin' on a picture of myself around Valentine's day might've put me in the doghouse.

Refrigerator: Holy, nice job. And... very unique medium. White-Out for highlights. Turned out fantastic, added some great texture!

Blackhawk: I like how you use big chunks of color, especially in this piece. Y'know, you're pretty much perfect at 3/4 views. Ever think of doing a profile shot?

Skank: Very nice, it's all about the small touch of red to the B/W.

Kanimator: You've got a fantastic style. Vaguely cartoon, but with awesome detail and use of color.

jook: Speaking of color, *wow* Painter watercolor, if I'm not mistaken? It looks absolutely fantastic .

Ni*: I'd have to say the one you did in blue is the best one I've seen so far. The sharp dark areas and color usage really work nicely. Your latest one is a good start to realistic color.

killing.people: Just plain amazing.

j.mac: you keep improving. It's really cool to see how you've come along.

Kanimator :: Great colors in that second to last -- and it's nice to see some full body portraits come through instead of the usual "shoulders-up" stuff.
killing.people :: Wow...just WOW.
J.Mac :: Construction paper and conte! That sounds like so much fun. Conte used to be my favorite medium until the computer became my cruel mistress.
Ni* :: Lookin' good -- Skin tones will continue to boggle my mind.
jook :: That color is awesome! It looks like someone attacked a box of crayolas and went nuts. :D
Skank :: You look like you're about to kick someone's ass. I like the lighting/shading on your brow.
Blackhawk :: Stunning once again -- I'm inlove with the bold blackand red.
RefrigeratorCo :: More solid mixed media! And again, it looks like so much fun -- especially the white-out.

Groover: I really like those colors. glad to see your face again.

Wizard of KOZ: I like the moods you set in your stuff...

skank: you look like a tough dude. Nicely done.

Ni*: I really like the colors you chose on that last one...

Kanimator: I like it. you should try and experiment a bitmore with color... I'll bet you find some neat things out if you do....

J.Mac: I dont think any side is harder than the other but my toughest area I'd say is the placement, shape, and size of the eyes. Seems easy but they are the toughest to draw for me.

asbestoshazard: Lovely!

Silvrain: haha. guile is teh shit. I like this one, as I do all of em.

RefrigeratorCo: dont be hatin the wacoms. interesting stylization.

Silvrain - i like the colours :D wow you have blue snot  hmmm :D

skank - nice glad to see you are posting once again. your last sp could make a cool poster if it was cleaned up and played with a little.

jook - eyes yes that could be my issue to aswell... how do you start out your sp's? maybe there could be somehting different that youcould do to help? i don't know just thinking... anyways that is a good sp i like when youdo those they come out very nice. the lips seem to not be in perspective with the rest of the head. keep it up

Groover McNab - hello my friend glad to see your face around here :D good start with being loose, keep them coming!

Wizard of KOZ - you style is so interesting too. i just like the look that you work has... i can't explain it but they have an appeal that attracts me like a mosquito to a bug zapper :electric:

Ni* - interesting colours very warm looking, just play with it and you will have fun with all the brushes and features :D

Kanimator - i like the expression on that one it looks good :) i am going to start making expressions to once i figure out the other side of my face :p if i figure it out... kepp it up!

EDIT: meant to say J.Mac is steadily improving, not me :P

Comment time. Had to get caught up with viewing all the work. Pretty good stuff all.

J.Mac - Thanks. You are steadily improving as always. I think you might be getting caught up in the small details and sometimes the alignment gets a little off. Just some friendly advice, I have the same problem when I do mine.

Killing - Those last two are badass. I've been too much of a wuss to try out textures.

BH - Great stuff as always

Asbestos - I really like the reddish monotone one. Great style.

Ni* - That blue one looks very cool. Is that pastel/sponges?

Everyone else, good job, everyone seems to be updating regularly. Damn, I need to get my act together...

J.Mac. samwell... I like that very much so. love the rendering and colors. do more... just for me...

Woot, back to monotone/antirealism happiness. :dork:

jook: That is.. very different from what you usually do. Sometimes it's easy to break things down into planar symmetry to see how shapes work together. It certainly turned out interestingly enough.

Ni*: really good lighting on that one!

j.mac: You know, I think you've got something by working on focus areas of the face, like just the nose and eyes. Maybe try *just* your lips and chinline, and see if that helps out your overall portraits.

samwell: Good lord man, that's well done. Lighting, perspective, texture, color... damn.

Elmo Lester: The full-on facial view turned out really well. Color and texture, fantastic.

Skank: that blue and white one is rocking! It's all about the lighting and colors. Awesome work dude. Good to see you drawing these more often.

Azzy: Draw..! :D

a doodle from a paintchat...angles are all off but I want to draw with that 1pixel pencil again.

http://asbestoshazard.com/art/040219%20selfissues.jpg

As you can see, i've had some major issues drawing as of late : / That...and color is the devil.

J.Mac :: The unfinished one with just your eyes and nose is very attractive to me...I should probably figure out the planes and dimensions of my face.
Skank :: I want to copy the one you did that just included your eyes, nose and mouth.
Kanimator :: The sarcastic expression looks good, especially the lighting.
Ni* :: It seems to get better and better the more you play with color. I am envious.
jook :: Once again, great experiments! The planar value looks like it was fun.
Wizard of KOZ :: The second one is especially gorgeous. I like the expression and colors.
Groover McNab :: The purple shadows are great, I'd say you accomplished that loose feel.
Elmo Lester :: Was the "funny mood" one fun to draw? Because it sure looks like it. I'm a big fan of the swirls.
samwell :: Wow! Painting? I love the angle, the shadows fall well. It looks great!

Silv :: I tried! I'll try again tonight.
Your colored one looks great, reminds me of the parking lot at CT when the oil swirls into the water. I love your "whoosh"!!! It's got to be the expression. It makes me smile. :D

Asbestos- Thanks for the compliment, I still find colour really frustrating like i am not getting something vital. Yours look good, just keep trying to push the contrast up..

Jmac- how the hell do you manage so many of these in pencil? :p nice work, the head outline one is cool, and your structure practice is paying off

BH- very nice as always, lots of mood in that last one

kanimator- i envy your pencil skill, i always have to block in the shapes then push them about whereas you seem to be able to just drop in the features, and your colour ones are cool, try a dark moody one :-)

Silvrain- that is more enhanced realism, it doesnt look to bad at all, it has loads of cheeky character to it, its cool

jook- looks like you're a robot in that one :-p

samwell- damn, thats really nice, the composition and colours are great.

elmo- the toon one is cool, and the second one is really interresting, technically good, and i like the colours and patterns too, does steam always shoot out of your headphones? :-p

ok, sorry if i missed anyone, there are so many people posting here now, which is a good thing!

J.Mac. Jesus Christ you have no face!;) (the wink is a "just kidding wink)looks like a clean shaped head... good to see the effort you are putting into this...

Kanimator: neat sketches. are all your SP's from photos? just curious...

Ni* :: Thanks for the advice and encouragement -- finding contrast in color is somthing I gotta learn. I should just let go, be messy and experiment. That SP is lookin' good -- what brushes do you favor?
jook :: Creepy! Maybe it's just the red eyes...but whoah. It reminds me of a superhero -- or villain. Protex of the Hyperclan...something or other. I like it.
Groover McNab :: I love the colors, too, the shadows are great!
samwell :: Very nice! nice to see the detail close on the canvas. Lips and eyes are especially well done.

Blackhawk

http://images.snitzerart.com/spod/spod249.jpg

God, I don't know where to begin.

Samwell - Very nice SP's, welcome.

Groover - Good to see you back. A loose style doesn't necessarily mean you lose focus of the form and value of your drawing. I think looseness is more of a product of mastery of control than an actual style, but that's the way I've always heard and looked at it. Great work.

Jook - Your getting better, I like the experimentation and you had the beginnings of some solid ones a few SP's back. Even when inventing keep a focus on the structure, I think you lost it a bit in the last one, but the ones before you were gaining it very well.

Ni - I've always said show the good with the bad when it comes to this section. I can point you to some embarassingly bad ones I've posted, but they all fit the mood or style I was going for in the end. This section was more about growth to me than actually trying to impress anyone. If someone liked my work, it only reinforced my labor of love :D When your doing color, try to mass large shapes of color before getting into smaller and smaller shapes. If you try to do small color shapes from the start, it looks messy and confused from the start and it's hard to fix it, atleast for me. One other thing, try to incorporate the shoulders into SP's. It'll help ground the head and get rid of that floating head feeling, unless that's what your going for :D Nice work, keep it up my friend.

Abestos - Nice group you have there. Something feels off about the proportions though. It's either the eye positioning or the chin/mouth area.

J. Mac - I don't know what it is, but that last one is solid. The features aren't there, but the silhouette is solid and I'm sure if you filled that sucker in, I'd recognize you right off the bat. Your displaying quite a bit of growth.

Kanimator - Be careful of your facial axis. The first SP on the top is out of alignment. The head wants to go at one angle, and the features look like they want to go another. The bottom one is much more solid though. Keep it up bud.

Silvrain - Nice work. Don't be like me and be afraid of color. From the trend I've been noticing on this forum lately, everyone is jumping into the color action. Misery loves company, so you may as well bite the bullet and join us ;)

It is 5:45 AM here, I'll hit the rest of the comments tomorrow before my head hits the keyboard right now. Night guys.

no time for comments right now... only to say, BH, thanks for the comments, and you are right about this being a progress thread not a 'look how good this is!!' thread. I should have posted the failed attempts but i wasn't enjoying doing them and that meant I couldn't finish them or correct the mistakes i saw. thats my excuse... :-p

my aim for this one was to try and show my mood, which was pretty down, i think it maybe worked. let me know what you think

Skank: Whoa! Very, very cool. Love the colors.
nova: I've always loved your b&w "ink" work. The top one is very "distinguished". Though, be nice to see a smile, I know you have a very pretty one. :)
LadyLioness: Looks good, you're getting better. You may benifit from spending more time maping out where all the parts will go, before you start finalising them.
davi: Great colors! Various parts seem to be out of place, though. The great brushwork more than compensates, though.
Jason Manley: Awesome brush strokes, and I love the subdued colors and lighting.
Ni*: Pretty cool SP, it's very Impressionistic. I like your color choices. By the way, all of my sps are done with a mirror. Only those two sketches were from photos.
Blackhawk: This one is nice, as usual, could probably use more reds in the skintone. I love the red and black, by the way.
asbestoshazard: Very pretty SP. You look... happy :crosseyed ;) I like the yellow one, too. You have a slick style.
samwell: As before, very awesome. Like I said, stop showing us up! ;)
GrooverMcNab: Very smooth, I like the blues. Some of the purples may be a bit out of place, though.
jook: Super cool! One of my favorites of yours. (PS: did you see, I used some crazy colors too, this time ! :D )

Blackhawk: I love the way you create your eyes...

Ni*: I think your face shows the feeling you were going for, not sure if the colors do though. I like the brush strokes.

Davi: I like your style, tell you so all teh time. something about your brush strokes and blendingg. its cool.

LadyLioness: glad to see you are back. I like it, shows much improvement. have you though about trying a 3/4th perspective one? I'd be interested how that would turn out...

nova: !!!! I love that first one. looking good and moody...

skank. very cool and evil and....... doooooom.

Kanimator: I really like the way teh color turned out. I think the yellow lines actually help to build depth. I am extremely glad to see you had fun with it. thats what its all about man...

Bleh, another color attempt -- and I still need to work on not being afraid of throwing the really vibrant colors out there. Not satisfied, will play more.

Blackhawk :: Thank you -- I'll try to keep that in mind. I should work on some proportion-focused sketches. In the meantime, love yours once again. Very bold.
Ni* :: The colors! Again and again, your beautiful colors. They look so wet.
Davi :: I like the lighting, the reflection on the glasses and hair looks good. Nice SP.
LadyLioness :: The charcoal seems to bring out more smears and blends, good for shadows and texture. Have you tried playing with stomps and kneadable erasers? You can gain some neat effects with them.
nova :: Nice style -- I've always been a fan of b/w and monochormes and you make it look almost like ink. Just lovely. Do you work with ink?
Skank :: Just...creepy, dude. Really, really creepy. :D
Kanimator :: Thank you for the compliments. The blue and yellow reminds me again of Peter Chung a la The Animatrix(Matriculated).
Sheldon :: Thanks for the comment. Heehee, "sears pose" -- nice, I like that. Very controlled shading.
jook :: Eeee, new styles...I have this tendency to stick inside my comfort zone -- unlike yours, which always show some play. I'll have to try. I like the perspective in yours, chin and mouth especially.

I draw and paint extremly slow it takes me 3 to 4 hours do do a good portrait. Hence Iīm going to do sp:s that I put in about 30 to maximum 60 minutes once weekly and post them here and hopefully get som crits from you.

Itīs been a while since I drew so this one is the first with a beard. Iīm looking up a just little does it show?
Used one of those pen with a nib (donīt know the english word)
http://hem.bredband.net/b257354/quicksp01.jpg
Iīve been looking trough the whole tread so many sp:s that I almost got "tunnelvision", but I try to comment at least some of you and the rest of you Iīm sorry

Silvrain: liked your first one and the one fromfeb 8 the best
Killing.people : great sp:s
Jook : Liked your "hot hot hot"a lot
Ni* liked your blue and green one
J.Mac: Nice sp:s. It seems like youīre put most time on your eyes then nose then mouth. It would be really great to see one were the same attention to every little aspect to the face.
asbestoshazard really liked your portrait of silvrain and the one were you used i think a blue ballpen.
ladylioness Itīs seems like your improving at least what I can see comparing your two sp:s
nova You get a lot in very little
Blackhawk : nice sp:s
kanimator: like your style

Hey everyone,
Lots of great SP's lately
killing.people- this latest one has a bit of a cinematic feel in the lighting and colour. Kinda creepy...

So I decided to put in some effort and do another SP. To make it interesting I decided to tackle it in colour and using my tablet- two fairly decent hurdles for me.

It turned out better than I expected, except for the likeness, which is a little off...but you can't have everything.

Oh yeah...I've got a pretty stupid expression too...

expat - not shabby i like the colours you used

killing - looking good :D do you use painter for these sp's?

Mindflaw - welcome! thanks for the comments yes i do tend to work in that order. it is a habit that is hard to break i must say...

jook - pencils! cool looking good. and thanks!

BH - that sp is really great i like the textures and how there are so many of them :D

endregan - nice to see you dropping by again. cool i like the colours used. you should try to see the different values and intensities that are in your skin. good work keep it up!

Kanimator - nice, it kind of looks like colour pencils.

asbestoshazard - cool you are getting more into colour that is nice to see. keep going with it! :D

skank - you are one crazy mother fauckner :D

nova - the first one is really nice i like the way you handle the black :D

Thanks J.Mac and Jook,
I know the eyes are probably a bit too much...the thing is I was trying to experiment with using colour and blending nicely because I'm a major novice at using colour well in photoshop. I'm a bit better at it in traditional media.

I also tried to experiment with specular lighting and the easiest place to do that was the eyes...plus I thought the green would help create the focal point in the eyes...

it's all experimentation...

OK so somehting is off i think it might be that eye is to far from the bridge of the nose... i would really appreciate it if everyone ripped this apart. if you have the time could you guys/gals just point out anyhting and everything that doesn't look right. htis is my final piece that i just started only about 1.5 hours into it so i am more than willing to erase the whole face and try it again :D

http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/sp89.jpg

silvrain - it doesn't suck it is just another creature all together give it a chance it will grow on you :D

Kanimator - seems to me that one side of your face is higher than the other.

jook - cool playing around i like that you have all those brush strokes in there :D

Man, to make up for my last SP, I made a huge effort to focus on proportions... and just making it look like me.
http://studiodimensions.com/kelsey/SelfPortraits/SP2-25-04a.jpg

And here's my attempt to do a "darker" SP. Ooooh, don't I look all brooding and stuff?
http://studiodimensions.com/kelsey/SelfPortraits/SP2-25-04b.jpg

Silvrain: Sorry you hate Painter (I do too...), but you're SP is pretty nice. Strange color combo, though.

J.Mac: Looking waaaaaay better than before. Really looks like you now. Keep going, can't wait to see it finished.

Jens: Your pencils rock! Somewhere between the two SPs lies the real size of your eyes. :D Both of your SPs look like two different people. Keep doing these, I'm curious to see what you really look like.

bhuddistmonk: Good first SP. It's a bit scribbly, maybe if you slowed down and focused on the quality of the lines more. Keep em coming.

bhuddistmonk... cool. glad to see your face. be wary of your proportions though. I doubt your nose is wider than the mouth... keep at it buddy...

Jens... I am really liking these. really simple and confident...

Hi

Didnīt really have any time oto post comments yesterday. But today I have some spare minutes...

expat: nice colours. Maybe if you made "softer transitions" your face would be more smoother.

silvrain: give it some time before deciding whether to like the program or not always takes some tome to learn a new medium...and the sp did turn out good...didnīt it

Jens: But the eraser is your best friend and not just to erase errors but to make highlights and stuff...anyway without an eraser you could draw very light and then fill in the lines that turned out good, sometimes keeping the a lot of light lines make the drawing very expressive.

Bhuddistmonk: keep it up, you could do one where you really spend time finishing maybe even several sessions, it cereates different problems to slove like shading and stuff

J.Mac I was looking at your progression with the sp (the one with the hat) and the improvements really shows and it turned out good too.

Roxell: I liked in your last sp how it seemed to be drawn with white instead of black.

n0fish: good shading

endregan: I was looking at your eyes and I think that if you start drawing the "tearchannels" too your eyes will improve.

Ni*: Keep going, I always seems to improve a lot when I kept going through a "downperiod"

asbestoshazars: your last one makes me think of the Borg in Star Trek:D

Kathy: Yeah a toothbrush saves more than the teeth, anyway without correct proportions no matter what effects one uses it will still be lame. But to quote you "Have to do more". All of your sp:s looks like the same person, looking forward to more of your sp:s, the true capture is out there.

Jook: always fun to see a sp progression :D. I like your last sp and somehow I like the feeling in the second last image in your progression.
My proportions are off but Iīm trying to draw three times as fast than Iīm used to in order to force my self to be more efficent and find faster ways to position features where they should be. In that sp I only gave (actually) the mouth compared to eyes and the ears compared to the eyebrows some time, hence making everything else a bit off thus making the mouth seem totally wrong. I was looking just a little down and slightly to my right. Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

hope my comments make some sense
