when i read about holding the pencil like a toothbrush here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=125489)
I couldnt really imagine, how that should work (im not very exakt in my shoulder...).
So i gave it a try and here`s what came out. (no reference, no erasing).

Please say, what u think. You cant "hurt" me, for this isnt my usual style...

Went a little over my 1h30 mark, but I was really having fun with Tuco. His belly came out looking fat though. Reference used.

cybot floor- your character seems kinda stiff, try to loosen up his stance. its a good thing your trying new styles, keep it up.

tenelaus-love it, especially the eyes, how their a slight different color really brings them out.

detonum- thats a huge hat! the shading along the bottom of it looks a little off. lookin good.

gumdrop- no crit, awsome!!

Blah, still couldn't force myself to work on this for more than 40 minutes. Invariably, I lose interest and stop caring, leading to the crudeness seen in the hands, feet, belt and lasso. Hat too to some degree. I wonder why it even took me 40 minutes? I think it was because I was cruising the internet in between. I hate myself.

sorry if its OT.

@dingoergret
Didnt i mention, he`s riding his invisible mexican horse? ;) But your right. I have to do something about that...

@mike
thx - did you look a the uncolored pencilsktech? i think, i shouldnt have colored....

(@others
Thx for the incredible amount of feedback so far...)

crits:

detontum, i like that style - but the hat is really weird. i also don`t get his form completly...

gumdrop, excellent quality, but not very imaginative. a movieshot + some PSFilter should do the same.

tenelaus, nice style, konseqent lightning. like it a lot. but isnt very mexican, is it? and did u realize, that theres a cowboy-formed shadow in the bg ? ^^

defunct, if he would see this, he would kill u *g* nice picture, but he looks fat and totally baffled...

dfacto: LOL. I wonder, what happens, if i`d pull... will he explode? ;) no need to hate yourself btw

merd: shame on me, i dont know django (heard the name but...) You should work with harder contrasts. the same picture in hard black&white would be much better!

mike: its cowboy, its mexican, its a sketch. nice. id like to see the colored version.

and here`s one more from me. same technique. (wasnt really satisfied with no 1...)

well you got your point what concerns the anatomy i really was to bound to the ref. my normal style of fading ain' t like this, it was only a experiment.
but you've got to watch these movies (django & django strikes again).Django is a cowboy from texas but always hangs around in mexico with his mexican friends. his gun is the latest in the west and he drags it around in a coffin. its a kind of methaphor for his demons. be sure to get the movies with franco nero, these are the originals. the movies mostly play in mexico so i thought django is a kind of charro even if he doesn't dress like one.

Excellent stuff from all of you! Dfacto's is hilarious! =)

The initial sketch to this actually looked promising. Now, the only thing I'm halfway content with is the trousers. But I don't have time to start over, so here goes.

I wished I could draw and participate here more often. =(

Thanks all for the comments.

MikeCorriero - Thanks. I'm starting to use multiple references for my pic's but as Cybot Floor pointed out, it lacks originality.

Cybot Floor - I guess it isn't very imaginative, but I haven't done many people so I was a little apprehensive. Maybe a futuristic version would have been better.

Crits:

Cybot Floor - Interesting experiment. I like the patterns on the trousers in the first pic, but like MC said I would like to see the detail picked out more. Love the darkness of the second pic.

detonum - Nice face. I'm scared as hell to tackle inks. I hope you keep at them.

Tenelaus - Love the face... real mean looking and great character. My, what a big cigar you have. ;)

Defunct - Again a nice face. Love the leg stance but shame it isn't bigger.

dfacto - LOL! I thaught someone would take this route. :)

merd - I've seen a few Django films. Something about a valley of death? You should try varying your pencil strokes for the shading... would help give it more definition.

Mike - Nice details on the gun and spurs, and the best moustache (sp?) I've seen so far in this thread. I would love to see you colour this... Your beasties and undead have great skin detail.

beetlebum - Nice character. I like the cigar and the poncho.

Agrajag - Great detail. The stance is nice and the colours.

Cybot: Criticism - the perspective makes him look like a giant. Also, body proportions are off.

BTW, for the record, I've been dying for some more crits of my work. The next time you see one of my posts, don't be gentle.

thx, for the points, but how to make it better? I cant see any giant-effekt and in my opinion the proportions are ok, too. so, what`s wrong, exactly?

I'm not formally trained in perspective so I might have this wrong, but I think the problem comes from differing horizon lines. When the two match up, he looks less like a giant:
http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/crit1.jpg
http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/crit2.jpg
Proportions are off mostly around the waist, and the head's a little big. This still isn't perfect but it's a bit closer:

BTW, if you don't like me messing with your work let me know & I won't do it again.

No, thank you very much - thats really worthfull. I was totally unaware of that horizon-thing. But how do i find the horizon of front-objects? Is it just the middle? (My arts-teacher in school didnt do his job...)

Cybot - I don't really know. :) Can someone recommend a good perspective tutorial? I could use one myself.

I think I like this one better.

2:30 hours in Painter and Photoshop. about 30 minutes went to actually figuring out what the heck was up with Painter. Man it looks so similar to Photoshop, but its different enough to totally throw you, though I must say that it is really easy to get texture with Painter. Aside from that I also had problems with my pressure sensitivity disappearing wen I switched from Painter to Photoshop. In fact, Painter's oils don't seem to have any pressure sensitivity. Is this a default or is there a setting irregularity on my comp?

very fine picture, railboy.

the out-of-focus effect is i little bit irritating though, because the white stones, which are farest away, are sharper then the middle field.

You got it all wrong. A charro is nothing but a mix between a treasure hunting archaeologist and a plant hopping plumber. Well. You know.

Just gona crit the three before me:

@Wednesday - cant say jack, that is really nicely done!! Is that sand flying up from a bullet shot next to his feet? really cool effect...

@Ancient Kitten - LOL ... at least you explained why he looks like Mario ... :)

@eobet - that's a really stylish Charro! I like how he's holding up his hat with his finger... is his shirt ripping at the buttons?? nice preliminary sketch!

Okay onto mine:

"Many years ago, they say, there wandered the most skilled Charro to ever roam the deserts of Southern California. Unmatched in skill, Don Rojo and his steed Caliente roamed the land, challenging every man they met, searching for a suitable opponent. Together they wandered for countless years and bested every person they came across and eventually amassed a massive fortune. However, Don Rojo's thirst went unquenched, and it is told that a suitable opponent was never found...

Now, they say, if you ever venture into the desert during a dust storm at dusk, you will find Don Rojo and Caliente waiting, ready to test your skill. Should you brave the challenge and defeat the Don, you will break his curse and gain the key to El Dorado, his hidden stash of fortune..."

http://filebox.vt.edu/users/uarshad/art/conceptart/charro.jpg

3hrs / Photoshop 7
(I spent a lot of time on the horse and rider, and was too tired to properly work on the dust and the sunset...)

Couple of crits that caught my eye:

Ancient Kitten : The shadow under the hat looks great contrasting with the strong light on the face. Maybe it would be good if there was some more of this on the body.

Wednesday : Great image with loads of movement in the brush stokes, but the head struck me as being a bit small compared to the shoulders.

damn - i though "hey, no horses so far, time to make one..." and what happens?
;)
No, Your Horse is quit cute - too cute perhaps. You should make its head longer - it looks like some toy.
But very cool muskles!

so, heres my third for today... again same technique. toothbrush-hold, no references. I urgently advice everyone to try that out - its an amazing experience!

Cybot Floor- That last one is nice. Usually it takes awhile warming up to pull off a decent sketch, at least for me. Holding the pencil like a toothbrush is a great way to get solid gestures!

lots of good work today! keep drawing!

Cybot........usually that technique for drawing with your shoulder is maintained for larger scale drawing, like 20+/_ inches. its so you keep a view of the image as a whole and can stand back further. If you're using a little 8.5X12 in sketchbook or a wacom, it may not be the best idea. So try it on a large scale and see what you think. For smaller sizes, you usually need more control. Hope this may have helped some.

i'm not completely sure, but i'd say it's not really important to "find the horizon of any objects", but rather to align your objects to the horizon line. i'm sure you know how to construct cubes with one or more vanishing points on the horizon - now just think of the different body parts of your cowboy as cubes (let's say head - chest - pelvis - legs, to keep it simple) and construct them according to the horizon line. if you have a very low horizon, one should be able to see the underside of the head, if your horizon lies above the head, one should be able to see the upper side of the head aswell as his shoulders...and so on.
of course this changes if he tilts his bodyparts, but i think you wanted to have him stand straight, didn't you? ;)

pol: lovely. how long did it take you to do that?
hunger_artist: your pictures always look different...but this one does even look very cool ;)

There`s a "IMG" tag - just click the IMG-Button above the textbox and enter the pictures url (rightclick on your picture at devianart and copy adress to clipboard)
To your pic itself:
try some shading or even colors. givs much more mood to a picture when there a lighsource.

antilight: cool char, but i never understood, why so many conceptartist give there creations those oversized feet... can you explain me?

pol:
great - i think his hands are in his pockets...?

hunger_artist: nothing to say... every single picture of you is... well... an hunger_artist. I hope you don`t mind, that i`ve got a directory with your name ? ;)

wednesday: i looks so easy, but i cant even copy it... :( brillinat pic once more - i only dont like the hat. the pattern, the color - something is wrong abbout it.
